hua hin, THAILAND Another boost to Hua Hin’s tourist sector was announced late last week as Malaysia’s Berjaya Air released the information that they will be commencing a three times a week service between Subang Airport (Kuala Lumpur) and Hua Hin from Thursday 8th November. It will be the first regional airline service to fly direct to Hua Hin and requires immigration and customs services that will have to be assigned from Bangkok and paid for by the airline. Berjaya Air will operate three weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays using a 70-seat ATR72 aircraft. A timetable is available via their website, which indicates that the flights will depart Hua Hin at 2pm, arriving in Kuala Lumpur ar 5.40pm, and departing Kuala Lumpur at 10.40am arriving in Hua Hin at 12.20pm (local times). Fares on the website state that a one way adult ticket from Hua Hin will be US$201.60 including taxes (approximately 6,200 baht) and a return ticket US$358.20 (approximately 11,000 baht). Baggage allowance will be 15kg, but there will be an extra sports equipment allowance of 25kg available for a 1,500 baht fee. The airline previously operated flights to Koh Samui, but halted the service last March. Current destinations are Tioman Island, Redang Island, Pangkor, Langawi in Malaysia and Singapore from its base in Subang. It will also commence a new service to Kota Bharu, near the Thai-Malaysia border on 28th October. bedford, england Elderly couple unwittingly buy giant cannabis plant from car boot sale An elderly couple have had a huge cannabis plant seized by police after purchasing it at a car boot sale. Police said the plant, which they seized from the couple’s Bedford home, was the biggest they had seen. The couple, who were simply looking for a pot plant at the boot sale, were shocked to find that the shrub they had been cultivating was in fact a giant cannabis plant, which had taken over a large area of the suburban garden. Following the raid on the elderly couple’s home, Bedfordshire Police took to Twitter to comment on their find and posted a photo of the bush growing in what looks like an ordinary suburban garden. ‘Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully-biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!’ it read. A spokesman for the police said the couple had requested the image be removed from the social networking site. It is unclear whether or not the pair will be charged over the cannabis plant.
Itacoatiara, brazil Brazil council candidate ‘handed out cocaine in exchange for votes’ Carme Cristina Lima, 32, was campaigning to become councillor of Itacoatiara, in Brazil’s northern state of Amazonas, when police became suspicious at the crowds reportedly gathering around her car. On Sunday, during the morning of the election day, officers spotted a group of people huddled around Ms Lima’s vehicle and searched the car, allegedly finding hundreds of packets of cocaine attached to her candidate leaflets, which included instructions on how to vote for her. Police chief Daniel Ottoni confirmed the news to Brazil’s TNONline website, saying: ‘There was a large gathering of people around Ms Lima, but when they saw the police they all ran away. The candidate and another man also fled by car but officers caught up with them. According to locals, she had been distributing the drugs since early in the morning, on condition that people vote for her.’ Following the incident, Ms Lima was arrested for electoral corruption and drug dealing.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is... . Worse for wear Shabby or worn through use; drunk. The expression ‘worse for wear’ is something of a linguistic oddity in that it has endured a variety of different meanings, versions and spellings during its lifetime. Let’s start with the spelling indignities. ‘Worse for wear’ or ‘worst for wear’? Both of these are found in print but, of course, the phrase is ‘worse for wear’, the alternative being a simple but sadly commonplace muddling of ‘worse’ and ‘worst’. ‘Worse for ware’ and ‘worse for where’ are also sometimes seen, again occasionally using ‘worst’ rather than ‘worse’, and there’s little better explanation for them other than that some people can’t spell ‘wear’. Anyone familiar with etymology will have come across the redoubtable John Heywood’s glossary A Dialogue Conteinyng the Nomber in Effect of all the Prouerbes in the Englishe Tongue. ‘Worse for wear’ is one of the older phrases in the language and Heywood included it in the book’s first edition in 1546:

Al thyng is the wors for the wearyng. The meaning there is clear - ‘as things are used they deteriorate’. As it became established in the language ‘worse for wear’ developed into a synonym for ‘worn out’. At this stage the variant ‘none the worse for wear’ was coined, meaning ‘used but not worn out’ and also dragging along its misspelled ‘worst/ware/where’ versions. The English poet Charles Churchill used that expression, in a rather backhand compliment to his wife, in the poem The Ghost, 1794: Some, in my place, to gain their ends, Would give relations up and friends; Would lend a wife, who, they might swear Safely, was none the worse for wear. Into the 20th century and the phrase took on another meaning, that is, ‘drunk’. This was taken up by the UK tabloid press in the 1960s and has now superseded ‘tired and emotional’ as the euphemism of choice when describing some celebrity falling out of a taxi at 3am.

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has called on the FA to punish Liverpool’s Luis Suarez after the striker threw himself on the floor before a Stoke player had a chance to recklessly lunge in two-footed, or elbow him in the face. The Potters’ manager has branded Suarez’s behaviour “an embarrassment” and appealed for the FA to ban him and others who act in the same manner.
