hua hin, THAILAND The likelihood of high speed trains running to Hua Hin moved a step closer this week as Chula Sukmanop, director of the Thai Transport Ministry’s Transport and Traffic Policy & Planning Office, announced a 2-trillionbaht borrowing plan to fund a variety of infrastructure projects, which is scheduled to be submitted by the Yingluck Cabinet next week to the Parliament for approval. The lion’s share of this funding, 1.65 trillion baht, will be spent on railway development, 30.7 billion baht on water transport system development, 243 billion baht on road development, and 12.19 billion baht on road checkpoint development. Four high speed routes have been announced, linking Bangkok to Pattaya (expected in 2018), Phitsanulok, Nakhon Ratchasima and Hua Hin (all expected in 2019). Thai Transport Minister Chatchart Sitthipun said that at the final stages of the projects, the northeastern route will be expanded to reach Nong Khai province, across the international Mekong River from the Lao capital of Vientiane; the eastern route will be expanded to Trat and the southern route will be stretched down to Songkla province. The project also calls for the construction of a dozen elevated rail and subway systems to link Bangkok with outlying provinces such as Nontaburi, Samut Prakarn, Nakorn Patom and Patum Thani. Other key projects to be financed with borrowing under the bill include dual track railways and road projects which have undergone environmental impact analyses. There are still a lot of questions that haven’t yet been answered on this project, such as ticket pricing and schedules, but if these are dealt with well, then this is another huge boost for the local economy and also makes Bangkok and other parts of Thailand much more accessible.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is.... A woman’s place is in the home, and Great minds think alike Old proverbs with literal meaning. The first notion has been expressed in a variety of forms by numerous people over the ages, all of them men of course. The proper proverbial place for a woman is usually expressed as ‘the home’ but is and has been also said to be ‘the family’ and ‘the kitchen’. The ancient Greeks got in there first. The playright Aeschylus, in Seven Against Thebes, 467 B.C., wrote: Let women stay at home and hold their peace. Of course, Aeschylus wrote in Greek and the above is a much later translation. The unambiguous nature of the thought being expressed doesn’t leave much room for interpretation and we can be assured that the English version says pretty much what the Greek dramatist originally said. Moving into sources written in English, we find Thomas Fuller’s Gnomologia: Adagies and Proverbs, 1732: A Woman is to be from her House three times: when she is Christened, Married and Buried. Again, rather an unequivocal view of where women should spend their time. It isn’t until the 19th century that we begin to see examples of the form ‘A woman’s place...’. The Edinburgh Magazine and Literary Miscellany, Volume 97, 1825 had a ‘family’ version: A woman’s place is in the bosom of her family; her thoughts ought seldom to emerge from it. In 1832, The New Sporting Magazine, Volume 3, included the earliest example of ‘a woman’s place is in the home’ that is found in print: A woman’s place is her own home, and not her husband’s countinghouse. A ‘kitchen’ variant is found in Hetty Morrison’s early feminist tract My Summer in the Kitchen, 1878: Accepting ourselves at the valuation of such men as these, that woman’s place is in the kitchen, or, to word

it more ambitiously, that “woman is the queen of the home,” the right I ask for is that we be allowed to reign undisputed there. Times change and with them our proverbs. In November 1970, Time magazine printed a piece titled Newcomers in the House. Bella Abzug campaigned for office in the US Congress using the slogan “This woman’s place is in the House... the House of Representatives.” ‘Great minds think alike’ isn’t especially old as proverbs go, but the thought behind it dates from at least the early 17th century. The impressively named Dabridgcourt Belchier wrote this in Hans Beer-Pot, 1618: Though he made that verse, Those words were made before. Good wits doe jumpe. That citation uses ‘jump’ with a meaning long since abandoned in everyday speech, that is ‘agree with; completely coincide’. Laurence Sterne repeated that usage in Tristram Shandy, 1761: Great wits jump: for the moment Dr. Slop cast his eyes upon his bag the very same thought occurred. The ‘think alike’ version wasn’t found in print until some time after that. The earliest example found is in Carl Theodor von Unlanski’s biography The woful history of the unfortunate Eudoxia, 1816: It may occur that an editor has already printed something on the identical subject - great minds think alike, you know. Thomas Paine, the English-born revolutionary who became one of the founding fathers of the USA, like many today, had a different response to the idea that ‘great minds think alike’, i.e. “No, they don’t”. He expressed that opinion in the 1792 political pamphlet The Rights of Man, edition 2: I do not believe that any two men, on what are called doctrinal points, think alike who think at all. It is only those who have not thought that appear to agree. 7

rome, italy Vatican purchases apartments above Europe’s largest gay sauna Vatican officials are sweating over claims it has splashed out £21million on a Rome apartment block above ‘Europe’s largest gay sauna’. The startling reports will be hugely embarrassing for the Catholic Church as its cardinals begin voting today for a new Pope to replace Benedict XVI following his surprise resignation. Cardinal Ivan Dias is likely to be redder than most as he prepares to cast his vote, with the 76-year-old currently residing in a plush 12-room first-floor apartment in the complex. A further 18 flats houses dozens of priests from the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples which is responsible for missionary activities. The Holy See reportedly purchased the luxury headquarters in 2008 seemingly unaware of the steamy activities going on underneath their feet. ‘Italy’s best known gay sauna in the premises is an embarrassment,’ noted La Repubblica newspaper who splashed the story across its front page on Monday. The popular Europa Multiclub Sauna and Gym is widely regarded as ‘the number one gay sauna in Italy’. Their website features a video promoting one of its special ‘bear nights’ in which a man strips down to a thong before changing into a priests outfit. The Vatican declined to comment on the reports.

kingswood, england Police retrieve unexploded World War II shell from garden – and then return it It was certainly an unusual approach to take when faced with a report of an unexploded bomb. A bumbling – or particularly courageous – bobbie responded to the report of a World War II shell in a garden by driving it to the police station in the boot of his car – only to be ordered to take it back again. He dutifully replaced the rogue ordnance in its original spot. But, an hour later, homes around it were evacuated when bomb disposal experts from the Royal Logistic Corps arrived to safely remove and destroy the device. The alarm was first raised by Karen Bailey, who was renovating the home in Kingswood village, Gloucestershire, and was not home when the officer returned. She had spotted the shell on the front doorstep five weeks previously after buying the house. A friend of hers who collects military shells said he believed it was safe so she kept it in the garden. However, a contractor helping her renovate the home last Thursday insisted she call police. She said: ‘I didn’t know they had closed the road until somebody told me about it the next day. They were willing to risk a young man’s life. They should have
redirected the bomb squad to the police station rather than take it back and evacuate everybody. ‘How ridiculous is that? It’s like a Carry On film.’ Six families in the area were moved to the town hall for an hour-and-a-half, including a 98-year-old woman in a wheelchair. Emma Butcher was taken away with her husband John and their three children Bethany, 12, Finley, nine, and Melody, two. She said: ‘I wish they hadn’t brought it back into the neighbourhood with my small children about. Undercover Thailand: Sex, Sin and Smiles
A NARROW VIEW REFLECTED By William Sparrow A writer for Business Insider this week called out a Thai ad campaign for Penguin Multi Surface Floor Cleaner, saying “it makes light of child prostitution in one of its print advertising campaigns”. The ad, which is titled “Soliciting,” shows a schoolgirl and a businessman’s legs standing next to a bed reflected by a gleaming clean floor. The author, one Ms Laura Stampler is quick to decry the ad as the reflection shows the man paying the young lady in what is obviously meant to be an act of prostitution. She is also made uncomfortable by the ad giving viewers a glimpse, which she characterizes as ‘disturbing’, up the uniformed high school girl’s skirt. However, the ad that is the work of Thai ad agency Hakuhodo, would hardly raise the brow of ratings censors in Ms Stampler’s home country in the US enough to deserve even a ‘PG’ rating. To be clear child prostitution is bad, despicable and should be dealt with the utmost fervor to stamp it out as Stampler calls for. She then goes on to cite UNICEF’s statistics on the child sex industry in Thailand. Indeed Thailand is among one of the many countries that struggle with the scourge of child prostitution. The main point here is that our western-based media pundit is chastising the ad agency and company while missing the point of the campaign and having no cultural sense of Thais and their country. The tagline for the ad campaign is, “Filth has nowhere to hide”, which should be a pretty simple indicator to help conclude that the ad agency and company intended to communicate it as ‘filthy’ behavior and that it would be considered filthy by most Thai people. Furthermore, Ms Stampler goes on to mention two other ads in the campaign only in passing and as ‘less offensive’; “Bribe” that shows two men in a business situation who are exchanging money under the table, and “Payoff” shows a man who has a gun taped under

the table in case things don’t go according to plan. She glossed over those quickly, but weighing her view thus far, don’t those ads make light of bribery and strong-arm, violent business tactics? Apparently they do not as Stampler only used the campaign as an unwarranted excuse to deride Thai’s on their views of child prostitution. Understanding the culture, jokes and parody can always be hard for outsiders. Journalists should tread carefully when trying to chastise from afar. Thais do recognize these ills of their society and notably, much better than you Ms Stampler. In the meantime, while considering your next article on social evils, why not stay closer to home and take a long look in your own backyard; I assure you that you’ll find plenty of cannon fodder there. The “Art of Salt” Thailand’s first salt sculpting display, “Art of Salt”, will be held in Phetchaburi province, from March 15 to 17, March 2013. The exhibition will take place at two different locations along the coastal route in Ban Laem district, at the 25 km and 41 km milestone. The district claims to be the largest producer of sea salt in Thailand. The “Art of Salt” is designed to give visitors the opportunity to learn about sea salt from a variety of activities and sightseeing, such as a test drive on a salt-grinding vehicle or a tour of the local salt museum. The event also aims to promote the Khlong Khon-Ban Laem - Cha-Am driving routes. The highlight of the event, as the name suggests, will be live

Advertise here from only 40 baht per week things to see CHA AM attractions near cha am KHAO NANG PHANTHURAT FOREST PARK Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park is a delightful playground for nature explorers. It covers an area featuring cave-ridden limestone hills and forested greenery. Inside the park, the 3km nature trail passes through a scenic landscape filled with natural rock formations, bird habitats and an array of flora and fauna. There are three possible ways to go to the park. 1. Take the “hospital road”, pass the bascule bridge then go straight (don’t turn right) for about 2 km. Turn left at the end of the road, then left again after 2 km. The entrance to the park will be on your right. 2. Take Phetkasem road in the direction of Bangkok, pass the flyover, pass the interchange as if you were going to Bangkok, then follow the road for 4 kilometers and make a U-turn. Turn left at Nikhom market (there is a sign in Thai indicating the park) then follow the signs. 3. Take Phetkasem road in the direction of Bangkok. Pass the flyover above the railway, then turn right at the entrance of Jalaprathan Cement Co. Ltd. Beware of the road, it is in bad condition. The forest park has two important mountains called Khao Chaolai and Khao Chomprasart, rising at about 60-372 metres above sea level from along the park’s north-south axis. Together, the two mountains look like a giant lying on her side (Nang Phanthurat is the name of a female giant in a Thai folklore). Surrounded by mixed deciduous forest and dry evergreen forest, the park enjoys a lush-green landscape all year round and is home to birds, plants and animals. There’s a lake that flows through the park, and a paved jogging trail running alongside it. Locals like to picnic or to enjoy the serenity of nature.

CHA-AM FOREST PARK If you fancy a relaxed day amid some pretty scenery then Cha-Am forest park is definitely a worthwhile choice. Situated on Phetkasem Road, it is easily reached by taking the Narathip junction when coming from the direction of the beach. The 665,600sqm park is part of Don Masang National Reserved Forest and sits on a lowland area covered in casuarina trees, cacti and a wide range of tropical plants. Crisscrossing the park, a large, freeform lake is home to several species of water fowl. If you are lucky, you might be able to spot a few peacocks, monkeys and palm civets. Due to its serene landscape, many come here to chill out and picnic. A paved trail, running throughout the park, is ideal for jogging and cycling. There’s also an area to set up overnight camps around the lake, as well as parkoperated bungalows and restaurant. So, it’s not a real campout in the jungle but rather a relaxing overnight excursion in beautiful natural surrounds.
