Part of the announcement was to encourage anyone thinking of advertising to do so by next week’s issue (5th July) so they could take advantage of our old prices should they wish to renew after the price increase. To qualify for this offer, an advertiser must have booked and paid for an advert in at least thirteen consecutive issues prior to October 1st, hence the need to start advertising in next week’s issue. We will be making our new prices available from the date of this issue to enable advertisers to calculate their potential savings, but as stated above they do not come into effect until 1st October. Anyone who books and pays for an advert after the 5th July issue and before 1st October will be charged the current prices, but any renewal after 1st October would be at the new, higher price. Any current advertiser who has negotiated a special deal or has a non-standard sized advert will be contacted regarding their pricing beyond 1st October. The price changes coincide with the 250th issue and five years of AWOL; in that time we have had one major pricing overhaul, in October 2011, where a few prices went up but the majority went down. Due to increased costs of printing and distribution, and an increase in the number of advertisers failing to pay their bill, this year’s price rise must happen for AWOL to be able to continue, and we hope that our current and future advertisers understand this. stories in the red By Roger Norwood Is it me or does it seem that debt is everywhere in the world now? A story this week in the Thai national newspapers tells us that Thai household debt rose to a record five year high at 64 per cent – a 12 per cent increase from last year. The global news is full of similar stories from all over the world, and even in the strong growing ecomomies of China and India there is continuing terrible poverty. To contrast this we also see images of Thai Buddhist monks living the high life, and here in Hua Hin plans for new luxury homes starting at 35 million baht, complete with an inland lagoon and beach. Very few foreigners living in Thailand, let alone the indigenous population,

could ever aspire to spending such an amount of money on a home but no doubt the project in question will sell. Hua Hin is, after all, increasingly seen as a playground for the rich, and at some point could rival Phuket in that regard. The Royal connection is obviously a big part of that, but I am concerned that the opulence being displayed could lead to the debt laden ordinary folk to revolt rather than give them aspirations. In other Thai tourist destinations the locals tend to be a little less tolerant of rich outsiders, and crime rates creep up steadily, with foreigners often targeted. While Hua Hin does not yet fall into this trap, there are signs that it is heading that way, and the bad behaviour of a growing number of
foreigners, both resident expats and tourists, does nothing to help the situation. Many become overly aggressive when dealing with small issues, partly through frustration at not being able to make themselves understood but more often because of alcohol, and almost all foreigners are guilty of making wild gesticulations with their hands and arms, which Thais normally find unnerving. My suggestion is that all of us should try to calm down, count to ten and engage our brains before speaking or acting; as Mark Twain memorably said, “It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.”

manchester, uk Ancient Egyptian statue appears to move on its own at Manchester Museum Eerie footage of an ancient Egyptian statuette slowly turning without any apparent help at Manchester Museum has emerged. The 25cm (10ins) relic of Neb-Senu - an offering to the god of the dead, Osiris, which dates back to 1800 BC was found in a mummy’s tomb and has been in its glass display case for 80 years. But in recent weeks it has been repeatedly found facing the wrong way, prompting staff to install a video camera to investigate. To their shock, the time-lapse footage clearly shows the statue doing a slow 180-degrees turn – so slow in fact, it is invisible to the naked eye. Even more mysteriously, it does not appear to rotate any more than 180 degrees and only spins in daylight hours when visitors are passing. Writing on the Manchester Museum blog, curator Campbell Price said: ‘The cause may be subtle vibrations from football or traffic outside, but the statuette has been on a glass shelf in about the same place in the gallery for decades and has never moved before – and none of the other objects in the case move in any way. A mystery? See for yourself.’
He hints the museum may have been struck by the infamous ‘curse of the pharaohs’, which is said to affect anyone who disturbs a mummy or pharaoh’s tomb. ‘I noticed one day that it had turned around,’ he told the Manchester Evening News. ‘I thought it was strange because it is in a case and I am the only one who has a key. ‘I put it back but then the next day it had moved again. We set up a time-lapse video and, although the naked eye can’t see it, you can clearly see it rotate on the film. The statuette is something that used to go in the tomb along with the mummy. ‘Mourners would lay offerings at its feet. The hieroglyphics on the back ask for bread, beer and beef. ‘In ancient Egypt, they believed that if the mummy is destroyed then the statuette can act as an alternative vessel for the spirit. Maybe that is what is causing the movement.’ Others believe footsteps of passing visitors makes the statuette turn on its glass shelf. Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas
gripping stuff At one time while living in Hua Hin it was very easy to miss those small items of news from back home. The things which maybe wouldn’t interest anyone else, and which friends forget to mention in their emails. But which as individuals we would really love to know, if only for future reference. There was one incident, about two years after I had returned to the UK, which illustrates this point. Having booked my seat for a Hollies gig (and for those who are already scratching their heads the word ‘seat’ there gives a clue to the age of the band and its’ followers) I arrived at the venue and settled down for an evening of 60’s nostalgia. Only to find that, to my horror and dismay, the lead singer had retired some time before. Now of course there is little in the way of news which escapes expats. So you have probably all heard of Nigella Lawson. I am not suggesting that any of you would some day want to pay to watch Nigella rustle up a few cupcakes, although for some reason she has attracted quite a large following of male admirers. Unfortunately she also attracted the kind of husband who wouldn’t look out of place prowling down Walking Street on a dark and stormy night. Aside from his multi millions, there must have been some mutual attraction in the first place for Nigella to fall for the wrinkly old Charles Saatchi, and in the days since he very publicly grabbed his wife by the throat I have tried to understand what that may have been. I really have. Surely not his wealth? Nigella has (or perhaps that should now be ‘had’) a lucrative career in her own right as a celebrity cook. Although I suppose a few millions more never goes amiss. His status? Nigellas’ father is a quite famous ex UK government Cabinet Minister. No lack of status there.

A Father figure who could outrank even the natural father? Perhaps. No doubt psycho-analyists, social psychologists and the like are reaching their expert conclusions as we speak. Meanwhile Nigella, to her credit, is reported to have left the matrimonial home and ditched her wedding ring. What she didn’t do in the first few days following the incident was to make a public statement, both for the benefit of her legions of followers, and for the sake of her career. While male celebrities faced with a crisis, domestic or otherwise, would speak out quickly, if only by issuing a press release, Nigella seems to have missed a golden opportunity to make a stand for female victims of abuse. Hopefully, given time, she will begin to recover and get her life back together. Maybe she will yet decide to speak out. But that small golden window of opportunity is disappearing fast, and I can’t help feeling that Nigella has already, to the dismay of many women, missed it.

newcastle, england NEWCASTLE United’s Director of Football plans to have the team all chasing after the ball at once. The comet formation – so-called because players form a long tail behind the ball – was developed by Kinnear while coaching his grandson’s under-six team. It abandons 4-4-2, wing-backs and offside traps in favour of running, shouting, and team-mates fighting to get a toe to the ball. Kinnear said: “As a proper football man, I know that players are motivated by goals, goal celebrations, and pretending to be Lionel Messi. This formation gives everyone a shot at all three. “Imagine being on the opposing team and seeing not one but nine or ten players coming at you, all shouting ‘Mine! Mine! Mine!’ Whoever we face will be terrified.”
