third man finally arrested for murder of briton
hua hin, THAILAND Over three years have passed since we reported on the brutal murder in Hua Hin of Raymond John Hind (in Issue 92 on 30th July 2010), and we further reported in February last year when court dates were set for two of the alleged culprits, Hind’s wife and her lover, who had eventually confessed to the crime. On 9th October 2013 Tourist Police announced the arrest in Songkhla of 30-year-old Khomkrit Imnoey for his alleged role in the murder of English businessman Hind, 68. Khomkrit allegedly conspired with his older sister Bunnak Hind and her lover Thanakorn Budsaba to murder the Briton on July 26, 2010, disguising the crime as a robbery and break-in. Bunnak and Thanakorn were arrested shortly after the murder, but Khomkrit had been on the run until his arrest in Songkhla’s Chana district. Khomkrit maintained his innocence in the murder, claiming he was delivering milk on the day and only went to the scene after his sister called him about what had happened. After learning that the court had issued an arrest warrant for him, he said he decided to flee because he was already wanted for the rape of minor, under a warrant issued on February 20, 2006. He was arrested by police forces at his workplace, at an electricity power plant. Mr Hind had a daughter and granddaughter in the UK, and we hope that they, along with his friends both in the UK and Thailand, will now finally see his alleged murderers punished appropriately. As far as Khomkrit goes, we must also hope that his alleged previous rape victim and relatives will also see justice served after a nearly eight year wait.

stories silence is golden By Roger Norwood My apologies for this week once again returning to the issue of ‘face’ in Thailand, but it is to many expats a complete mystery, and for still more visiting foreigners something they are not even really aware of. I would compare ‘face’ to an omnipresent force that controls almost everything Thais do or say, but almost without anyone realising it. Only on the odd occasion do Thais have to consciously think about it, as it is so ingrained into the way they do and see things. It is hard to find a decent comparison in Western countries to help explain it, but I am going to try! The best I have been able to come up with is the British concept of ‘fairness’; given any situation that

involves a dispute between two or more parties, most British people of a certain age (I can’t speak for the youth!) will be able to determine almost instantly the rights and wrongs of what is fair or not. It is a very important part of British life - if someone pushes in to a queue, for example, this is the epitome of being ‘not fair’, and they might as well have raped and murdered someone in front of you! Thais will instinctively act in a way so as to both not lose face nor cause anyone else to, although I am still to work out what they would do if it is a one or the other type choice, but I suspect this depends on who the other party is - an older relative will likely have their face saved at the expense of the person having to
choose for example. Foreigners will often react in a way to cause a Thai to lose face without realising it, and once they do realise, saying sorry does not help and can actually make things worse sometimes. This is equally hard for foreigners to understand, as we are used to being able to apologise and make good for our mistakes, but in Thailand, to use an old English saying, they see you as trying to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. And in these situations, staying silent and letting time pass is often the best policy, which has undertones of another saying - “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

Connecticut, USA Shirtless man throws parrot at police officer to avoid capture Criminals have tried a lot of different things in order to avoid being caught but an incident in which an alleged crook threw a parrot at an officer to prevent himself being captured could be a first. Luis Santana, from Connecticut, USA, was so eager to escape the authorities he reportedly decided to use the squawking bird as a distraction when they were about to detain him. When officers arrived on the scene after reports of an altercation, instead of surrendering, a shirtless Mr Santana apparently threw a stolen white parrot at an attending officer. If that wasn’t enough, the bird was then said to have bit the policeman on the finger. Justice was served in the end though after the shirtless parrot thrower was located at a house nearby. He was duly arrested and has since been charged with several offences, including cruelty to animals and assaulting a police officer. The parrot has reportedly been returned to its rightful owner.

With World Cup qualification now confirmed, Hodgson said it was now the time to give a chance to other jokes on the periphery of his routine, to see if they could be relied upon in the heat of Brazil. He told reporters, “The jokes I’ve used in qualification have served me well, but there’s little more I can learn about them.” “Now is the time to experiment and try some younger jokes and find out if their ready.” “I’ve got a great joke about a penis transplant using a baby elephant’s trunk, and I’m excited to see what it can do.”
