hua hin, THAILAND As one door closes, another opens, it is often said, and this week that seems to be the case with the transport infrastructure in and out of Hua Hin. Today (Friday 21st March) sees the start of the new Thai Lion Air service between Hat Yai and Hua Hin, scheduled to run 5 times a week, on Fridays, Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. However, yesterday Thailand’s Constitutional Court ruled as unconstitutional the legislation that sought huge financial support for the Yingluck government’s ambitious rail and logistics development plan, including the proposed high speed rail link between Bangkok and Hua Hin. Many believed from the very start that this project would not go ahead, but one analyst connected with the transport sector said that the project still exists and is bound to be carried out by a future government in the years ahead. However the project might be downsized to cut costs if the much- heralded scheme of modernizing Thailand’s land-based transportation system would be implemented, he said. Acting Transport Minister Chatchart Sitthipun said that the high- speed train project might be indefinitely suspended, despite its potentials in boosting cross-border transport of cargoes and tourists. As far as AWOL is aware, this will not impact on the building of a dual standard track between Bangkok and Hua Hin, which we believe has already had its funding approved, so there should still be improved journey times by rail in the future. Hopefully the growth of Hua Hin as an international tourist destination will also lead to further international and domestic flights using the vastly under utilised airport.

weird NEWS Fujian province, China Man survives despite hammering three 10cm nails into own head A man has miraculously survived after apparently hammering three 10cm (4in) nails into his own head. X-rays revealed that the nails had been hammered through the man’s skull and into his brain – but he made a full recovery following surgery. The unnamed 69-year-old was discharged on Thursday after spending three months in a hospital in Haifeng County, Fujian province in China, to be treated for what he claims were self-inflicted injuries. However, despite maintaining that he hammered the nails in himself, hospital staff believe the injuries must have been inflicted by someone else because of their severity. The very lucky man insisted police should not be called, and no one has yet been arrested in connection with the incident. Medics eventually discovered she had a five centimetre worm in her windpipe and removed it. ‘We thought she might have caught a cold, but never thought it was a leech or that it could stay there so long,’ the unnamed girl’s mother said. Doctors added the worm had probably grown in size while it was in the youngster’s throat after sucking on her blood. Although sharks are common off Australia’s coast, the country averages fewer than two fatal attacks per year.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Not a dicky-bird Not a sound; not an utterance. A ‘dicky-bird’ might be of uncertain spelling - it is variously spelled ‘dicky-bird’, ‘dickey-bird’, ‘dickybird’, ‘dickeybird’ and, when referring to the retired English cricket umpire, ‘Dickie Bird’. The country of origin isn’t at all uncertain; ‘dicky-birds’ are unequivocally English. The term dates from at least the 18th century, when it appeared in the London Evening News, May 1766, as the title of a story they intended shortly to publish: “The Swan and the Dickey-bird: A fable - shall be inserted in our next” At that time ‘dickey-bird’ was a generic nursery term for the small, chirruping birds often found in the English countryside and features in the well-known nursery rhyme Two Little Dicky Birds. The rhyme is usually accompanied by wiggling index-finger gestures, to represent the birds: Two little dicky birds, Sitting on a wall; One named Peter, One named Paul.
The rhyme was adapted from the earlier ‘Two Little Blackbirds’, which was first published in London in the first book of nursery rhymes, Mother Goose’s Melody, circa 1765: There were two blackbirds Sat upon a hill, The one was nam’d Jack, The other nam’d Gill. The ‘not a dicky-bird’ phrase indirectly derives from the tweeting sounds made by the birds. ‘Dicky-birds’ became established as a Cockney Rhyming Slang term for ‘words’, in the mid 20th century. The first record of it in print is in the 1932 ‘P. P.’ Rhyming Slang: “ Word... Dicky bird.” So, ‘not a dicky-bird’ means ‘not a word’, that is, silence, especially in the context where a spoken or written word might have been expected - for example, ‘Jack said he would write, but I haven’t heard a dicky-bird from him for weeks’. superstitious minds (Part 2) And so enters the class divide, with higher classes now looking down on people like the construction workers whose tattoos advertise to all what they do for a living. But there can be problems with the potency of even the one tattoo. If the tattooist doesn’t believe that his customer is worthy, he may introduce a slight error or variation in the design, which, unknown to its’ wearer, will destroy the tattoos’ power. Whether insurance companies in Thailand check for fraudulent accident claims on the grounds of insufficient tattoo protection isn’t clear. Traditional superstitions and talismans also suffer from increasing westernisation. Those figures of the beckoning lady - or ‘nang kwak’ - usually placed on or near shop counters are one of the devices used by businesses to encourage customers to spend. Not to be confused with the larger figures of ladies ‘wai-ing’ by the entrances to shops etc, the nang kwak beckons with one hand held out in the polite palm down gesture. Which is fine in places like HuaHin, where tourists expect to see quaint old fashioned things. But in some of the trendier shops, particularly in Bangkok, modern versions of the ‘Maneki Neko’ talisman are used instead. This cat with the waving paw is a common sight in Chinese restaurants and shops all over the place, but is believed to have been introduced to Thailand from Japan when they became trading buddies. The cat also has the advantage of being lower maintenance than the beckoning lady, requiring fewer offerings, because just like the shrines in bars and other businesses and homes, all talismans must have regular offerings to maintain their potency. While the shrines, beckoning ladies and cats are easy to spot, small traditional businesses, especially shops, may contain a host of other artifacts. All intended to bring prosperity and good fortune. They include portraits of monks, bottle gourds, plaques bearing auspicious words, amulets and charms. Another - quite easy to find along the Chomsin and SraSong Roads area of HuaHins’ market - is the stylised fish trap. These objects are made from an open patterned bamboo weave, and resemble a long narrow fish shape. They can be around a metre long, and hang from the ceiling towards the front of a shop to ‘trap’ the shopper. But as with tattoos, non of these talismans will work unless they are first blessed by a monk or Shaman. Many of you will have noticed a different kind of blessing which is made by the shop owner when the first sale of the day is made. Seen usually at stalls or in small ‘Mom and Pop’ shops, the vendor will waft your payment over their stock, almost as though they are dusting with baht.

They are simply spreading the good fortune of the first sale in the belief that many other sales will follow. In the West prices tend to end with 99 - whether it be euro, dollars or pounds, a 99 cents or pence at the end can make the item look like a bargain. In Thailand the reason for the 99 baht is simply that the number 9 is considered lucky. Like dusting with baht notes, lucky numbers are also easy to use - needing no blessings or offerings. They are inherently lucky and much sought after. Rather than try to enter the realms of how numerology works, it is probably best just to accept that 9 is the luckiest of the lot., and that a string of 9’s is even better. That’s my excuse anyway! You have to be pretty quick off the mark twice a month to find a lottery ticket with plenty of 9’s in the number, and if you want a vehicle registration plate with 9’s, or numbers which add up to 9, you would certainly need to win that lottery first.

They are in the Thailand Division 2 Central West Region and play their home matches at the Kai Tanarat Stadium in Pranburi, a little way south of Hua Hin, although there are rumours that a purpose built stadium is going to be constructed in Hua Hin itself.
