hua hin, THAILAND One thing that has been missing from the Hua Hin area for a few years has been a local radio station playing western music interspersed with news broadcasts and local advertising. Surf 102.5 FM actually carried out this function several years ago but for a variety of reasons both it’s output and popularity dwindled; however Surf is now back with a bang, broadcasting 24 hours a day, with a stronger signal and a huge variety of music, enabling listeners all along this stretch of the Sunrise Coast, from Cha Am, through Hua Hin to Kao Tao to listen and enjoy. The radio station not only broadcasts on the 102.5 FM frequency, it is also available online, via the radio station’s website, huahinsurffm.com, as well as the AWOL website, awolonline.net, and the TuneIn radio app for most mobile devices. The revival of Surf FM began in November, when Richard Buckle, a radio professional for more than twenty years, was brought in as an advisor by station owner, Khun Pongsawatch Charoennithithat (Khun Ju), to update the systems, music programming content and advertising, while the transmitter and other hardware was also updated and replaced. The result is a much improved and contemporary output designed to appeal to the vast majority of the area’s listeners - expats, families, retirees and Thais with a taste for the west, with further improvements planned over the next year. Surf 102.5 FM will be sponsoring a regular weekly section in AWOL as a counterpart to their regular shows, bringing AWOL readers news and information on events in and around the area, while we will also be combining to offer unbeatable advertising opportunities to local businesses. Please contact either sales@awolonline.net or surf102.5fm@ gmail.com for information on the packages that will be available.

Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 Lately it seems as though you’re running out of steam. Shovel more coal into your firebox to rotate the paddle wheel. Pisces Feb 19 – Mar 20 When given a choice between tuna salad or egg salad this week, go with the egg salad. Just trust the stars on this one. ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20 Running away from your problems will fail this week, as will climbing out of your problems’ reach and playing dead in hopes that your problems go away.
Taurus Apr 21 – May 21 The stars indicate that you’ve really done it this time. I mean, just look around, for God’s sake. How did this even happen? Gemini May 22 – June 21 Your passionate lovemaking will wake up the neighbors this week, making it a lot harder for you to have sex with them. Cancer Jun 22 – Jul 22 All you wanted for Christmas were your two front teeth, but in the end you also needed your four bottom incisors, the six molars at the back of your mouth, and whatever other bicuspids were missing. SERVED UP BY...
A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Clog up To become obstructed. Examples: The leaves clogged up the drain. The extra traffic made the roads clog up. People often send suggestions of the origins of phrases to add here. These range from the interesting and erudite to the frankly bonkers. A recent proposition was ‘clog up the works’, which was said could have derived from Luddite Dutch workers throwing their clogs into machinery to wreck it. That sounded like classic folketymology but I decided to look closer when I read that the French for clog is ‘sabot’ and that was how ‘saboteur’ derived. That was certainly at the interesting end of the scale and worth investigating. The above story circulates in various forms; the workers are either Dutch or French and the sabotage is said to have taken place in either the 16th or the 17th century. As it turns out, ‘sabotage’ is a 20th century invention. The earliest known example of the word in print is in a Reuters’ report of a labour dispute in Paris in June, 1907, published in the UK in the Manchester Courier: M[onsieur] Bousquet solemnly declared on oath that he had never recommended sabotage or pillage. The French word ‘saboter’ is a verb meaning ‘make a noise with sabots’ and was generally applied to anyone who clattered around like a bull in a china shop and generally fouled things up. The original saboteurs were French dissidents, but they wore clogs rather than threw them. The ‘damaging machinery with footwear’ source of the idiom ‘clog up’ gets a close but no cigar award. So, how did ‘clog up’ originate? To 14th century English peasants a clog was a heavy block of wood. Oxen were ‘clogged up’ by fixing the blocks to their feet to stop them straying. When shoemakers
See our exclusive interview with Chantal Jauvin, author of ‘The Boy With A Bamboo Heart’ on pages 9 and 11 of this issue of AWOL
first hollowed out blocks of wood to make footwear, ‘clog’ was the obvious name to go for. John Trevisa’s translation of de Glanville’s Latin text De Proprietatibus Rerum, 1398, includes: He feedeth and nourisheth oxen and bindeth their feet ... and cloggeth them while they be in pasture and leas. That form of clogging developed into our current use of the verb ‘to clog’ via several words of similar sound and meaning. In the early 16th century ‘clogged up’ meant to be stuck in sticky clay, literally ‘clayed up’. This was a muddling of ‘clog’, ‘clay’ and ‘clag’. In Yorkshire, and in other parts too, sticky clay soil is called ‘claggy’. Later in the 16th century, ‘clog up’ was used as we now use it, as a general term for ‘impede/choke up’. This came about by means of other muddlings, of ‘clogging’, ‘clotting’ and ‘cloying’. We might have opted for any of ‘clay up’, ‘clag up’, ‘clot up’ or ‘cloy up’ but ‘clog up’ got the nod. Going back to the oxen, it’s clear that a ‘clog’ and a ‘log’ was the same thing, so the beasts might just as well have been said to be ‘logged up’. The change of language didn’t happen in the fields but it did inside the house. At Christmas we now burn (or more often these days, eat) yule logs. When the first reveller decided to give a name to the large block of wood burned at Christmas, it was a clog not a log. Henry Bourne recorded this in The Antiquities of the Common People, 1725: Our Fore-Fathers were wont to lay a Log of Wood upon the Fire, whlch they termed a Yule-Clog, or Christmas-Block. Hereabouts we have ‘clog dancing’. That might easily have turned into ‘log dancing’, which sounds much more fun. ‘The Boy With A Bamboo Heart’ by Chantal Jauvin “A riveting, wrenching and inspiring account of a life’s journey. Dr. Amporn’s remarkable story is not about childhood survival or war-time battles, rather a life-long struggle to defeat his demons and transform his fate.” Nelson Rand, author and journalist. Paperback available at Asia Books E-book available on all platforms. Outside Thailand, paperback available at www.chantaljauvin.com facebook.com/chantal.jauvin1

The Girl With The Hua Hin Heart An interview with Chantal Jauvin, author of ‘The Boy With A Bamboo Heart’ hua hin, THAILAND
We met with Chantal at the beginning of November, shortly before she was due to leave for the USA to promote her new book there.
AWOL: Welcome to the hub of our operation, Chantal; can you begin by explaining the title of your book to our readers? CJ: The Boy With A Bamboo Heart is what I believe reflects well the character of Dr. Amporn Wathanavongs, who the book is about; as you may know, in the Thai language the word heart (jai) is used often to describe someone’s mood, emotion or personality; bamboo is both strong and flexible; beautiful and practical, and it is hollow; the hollowness represents both the losses and pain he has suffered but also there remains room inside. In the case of Dr Amporn, he has needed and displayed all these qualities, and there is still room left in his heart for all the people he helps.
AWOL: This is your first book, but did you always want to write? CJ: When I was a student I really wanted to combine a love of writing with a love of for international affairs and relations, so my first career choice was to try and become a foreign correspondent for one of our Canadian newspapers, but that path was closed off to me because I was not yet sufficiently proficient in English , as I grew up speaking French; however once I realised this I worked at improving my English, but then took a different path and studied to become an attorney specialising in International Trade Law. My passion for international trade grew into one for international business and I became general counsel for a large global company that was my main career before I came to Thailand and met Dr Amporn, and he asked me write his story. AWOL: So what is your connection with Hua Hin and Thailand in general? CJ: I was first introduced to Thailand by my regular stops here on my travels elsewhere, but I didn’t really get to know the country until I met my husband (Bill) who had worked in Bangkok for a few years and continued to be a regular visitor here for years. We own a property in Hua Hin, so naturally we started coming here more frequently once we had more time. I love the place. AWOL: What do you particularly like about both Thailand and Hua Hin in particular? CJ: In general I find the Thai people so welcoming, open and gentle, and their culture is intriguing both in terms of their Buddhist influence and especially their historical and economic development. It makes it unique compared to the places I have lived such as Japan and

Cambodia and for a shorter time Vietnam. I love the Thai food, rambuttans, mangosteens, morning glories and all the seafood! In Hua Hin I am drawn to the natural beauty here, with the contrast between the ocean and the mountains makes this city particularly appealing. I love cycling here for that reason, and the beauty of Hua Hin is that nature is all around us, even though it is becoming a bustling city; it also retains a unique sense of community and diversity. Unlike many of the other popular tourist places, there is a local community here that feels like a second home. And of course there is the beach, more the unspoilt northern part, and I frequently walk the ocean’s edge and gaze at the ocean. The power and the constant change brought about by the waves helps me think about my writing and challenges me to find that same strength. AWOL: We understand that as well as your book, you have a more local claim to fame? CJ: Hardly fame, but as I said, I love cycling, and on one trip here in 2009 it coincided with the King’s Cup and Queen’s Cup cycling competitions, so on a whim Bill and I went along and entered our relevant age sections. We just wanted to take part really, and when the race had finished we were all ready to slide off home as they got ready for the presentations when we were stopped by one of the organisers and told we couldn’t go now. When we asked why, he said ‘Because you won!’ AWOL: So is the cycling and nature part of your writing process, how you deal with the dreaded writer’s block? CJ: I actually have a very specific way to deal with writer’s block, as it can happen anywhere, anytime! I go into the kitchen and start cooking! I put together whatever I can from the ingredients available and get creative, sometimes with great results; Bill will say to me something I have made is wonderful, and I say ‘I’m happy you like it, you’ll never have it again!’ That’s because I don’t follow any recipes, I let my taste buds, my knowledge of ingredients from all the places I’ve lived around the world, the texture and my mood guide
my food preparation. I am constantly experimenting. Mostly, it allows me to overcome the linear thinking lawyer in me and allows the creative artist in me to surface. Then, I’m ready to write again. AWOL: Right now you are a little way into the promotion of your book; how has that gone and what has and will it entail? CJ: We have done seven events in Thailand, one in Hua Hin which went much better than anticipated, and six in Bangkok which have gone equally well. Our next stop on the promotion trail is the USA as the book is launched there on 18th November in Philadelphia. The book has also been published by Maverick House based in Ireland but the book is now in bookstores in Ireland and the UK as well as being distributed in Asia by Asia Books. There is a book signing planned in Denver, Colorado for late January 2016. A number of private book signings have been planned such as an evening talk co-sponsored by the Wharton and Boston College Club Alumni, a luncheon at the Acorn Club both in Philadelphia and a by invitation only book talk in Princeton, NJ. We are in the process of scheduling other events throughout the year as we are being approached to present the book. I will also do a book launch in Canada, in my hometown of Ottawa in the first quarter of 2016. In Thailand, we’ve had articles and reviews in The Nation, Bangkok101 and Hua Hin Today. I plan to be back in Thailand early May and will be planning further events. The most rewarding part of the book’s success are the donations that readers are making directly to FORDEC after reading the book and being inspired by Dr. Amporn’s story. I love receiving emails about this. As you know, all my author proceeds are being donated to FORDEC, so all of this support for FORDEC means more Thai children and families have hope of a better future.

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas as sober as a judge Yet another rail accident in Thailand last Friday will leave many of you despairing that nothing will ever change, and sadly you could be right. Despite the fact that the rail crossing in Petchaburi where the accident happened was reported to be manned, the driver of a cattle truck allegedly ignored red lights and drove across the line anyway. And despite calls to install mirrors and clear trees close to unmanned crossings - despite promises to install barriers - nothing has changed. Just as measures to reduce road deaths over New Year have failed. Maybe it’s time to face the fact that we farang are simply not on the same wave length as our Thai friends. Do you get those annoying e mails from Trip Advisor? No, they don’t warn you about Thailands’ railway crossings, but they do come up with some bizarre mixes of places that you should visit. My latest message from them declared ‘York, Bridlington or ChaAm - sky’s the limit!’ Being very familiar with all three places I am in no doubt at all which one is top of my list, and it isn’t the two which are just an hour or so bus ride away from Hull either. Not that there is anything wrong with York. It has a fine race course, the National Railway Museum, plenty of old city walls, and an impressive Minster. Even the Yorkshire coastal resort of Bridlington has it’s good points, including better fish and chip eateries than you will ever find in Thailand. But somehow neither of those places can compete with little old ChaAm, even in its very tidied up state. Even more bizarre though was the news that Hull has been included in the Rough Guides’ top 10 cities to visit this year. Amazed? So were over a quarter of a million locals over here. Maybe the title ‘Rough Guide’ should provide us with a clue, but no. Hull is ranked number 8 - one below Amsterdam and one above Vancouver.

Before you all rush to book flights to Manchester please be warned that Hull city centre still resembles a war zone as it prepares to become UK City of Culture 2017. January 15th 1943 was a momentous day for the USA, marking the completion of the Pentagon, home of the US Department of Defence, and still the largest office building in the world. The huge building was completed in just 16 months, with around 13,000 people working on it at any one time, including the 1,000 workers needed just to install the air conditioning. Even more remarkable is that the original plan for 3 floors had to be increased to 5 as the US prepared for its’ attack on Pearl Harbour. And that is not counting the two basement levels. There are reams of other statistics on the Pentagon, but one fact which puts it all into perspective for me is that at the time of its’ construction, the Pentagons’ 280 plus bathrooms were segregated between black and white.

Sunday 17th January 2016 PREMIER LEAGUE Soi 102, Hin (200m00:30 on right after railway) Aston Villa Hua v Leicester Depending on the midweek results, this match could see Leicester consolidate top position, and given how poor Villa have been this season, they must see this as a great opportunity to do so. However Villa’s win will have given them a boost, and the added edge of a Midlands derby could also play a part. We are going for a shock win for Villa. fantasy premier league

sturridge to play shock Promising Liverpool player’s injury career ruined by bouts of football
england Football bosses have said that they are saddened to learn that Daniel Sturridge has yet again regained fitness and will be able to turn out for Liverpool FC in their match next week. Sturridge has a promising career as a professional sick-note but unfortunately his progress has been stunted by an almost permanent state of fitness. Exasperated hysiotherapist Ben Crowley said about this latest bout of fitness: “l’It’s sickening to be honest. Not for the first time we had got Daniel into the position of taking up a permanent place on the treatment table. This unexpected fitness has set us back three months. I’m absolutely gutted for the lad.’ Sturridge has managed to stay injured for just half of Liverpool’s matches since he signed for them in 2011. With his ability to stay injured seemingly in terminal decline it is not clear
Above: Undisputed king of the sicknotes, Kieron Dyer how long the club management are prepared to tolerate his presence on the pitch. Daniel Sturridge issues a brief statement this afternoon, in which he said: ‘Listen, there is nobody gutted more than me. I didn’t sign for a team like Liverpool to be playing week in week out for £100,000 a week. The club and
the fans deserve better. Well, I do, anyway.’ Sturridge is believed to be trying to emulate the achievements of two luminaries in the world of sicknotes, namely Kieron Dyer and Darren Anderton. He said “It’s obviously every professional’s dream to get to the level of constant treatment these guys got to.” Sturridge faces stiff competition to reach such legendary status though, as Andy Carroll is hot on his heels cruciate ligaments in winning the coveted Plâtre D’or (Golden Plaster), awarded every season to the player who has missed the most games through injury. It is the lesser known cousin of the Ballon D’Or, which was this year won by Lionel Messi, and Sturridge in particular thinks that Messi doesn’t stand a chance of ever winning the Plâtre D’or.
