hua hin, THAILAND Reports have been coming in that at least one customer at an ATM in central Hua Hin has been the victim of a crime known as card cloning - basically the details of a credit or debit card inserted into the machine get copied along with the Personal Identification Number (PIN) when it is input. There are several methods employed by the thieves to do this, including a fake keypad placed over the original, or a completely false front to the machine, but it is also possible that some form of ‘hack’ has been employed on the machine that allows the data to be collected remotely. The details obtained are then used to either make a copy of the card to use on ATM’s elsewhere, or sold on to other criminals to do the same or similar. While this has been commonly reported happening in Thailand generally, this is a rare occurrence in Hua Hin, and hopefully will remain so, but anyone who has used any ATMs in the area is advised to check their accounts immediately to make sure all transactions recorded are theirs, and if not to immediately report suspected fraudulent use of their card to the card issuer. We would also advise everybody, but particularly those using debit or credit cards from banks outside Thailand, to avoid using ATMs and instead go inside the bank to use their card, although this will normally also require your passport. This normally also has the added bonus of avoiding the local fee charged at the ATM, although does not avoid any other fees normally charged by your bank for overseas cash withdrawals. We would further advise everyone to tell the banks they use why they feel it necessary to do this, as it may persuade them to improve the security and checks on their ATM machines. Many exchange booths will also issue cash against overseas credit and debit cards with a passport, and sometimes at better rates, so please check. They also tend to open longer hours than the banks.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... Tawdry Showy, but of poor quality. Why should the derivation of a single word like ‘tawdry’ be included in a section that specialises in the etymology of phrases? Two reasons: one, it is short for the phrase ‘tawdry lace’ (of which more later) and another, it has an interesting derivation worth reading. For the explanation of the word tawdry we have to go back to 7th century England and the story of Etheldrida, the daughter of the king of East Anglia, who was otherwise known as Saint Audrey. Audrey died in 679 AD of a tumour of the throat. It was recorded by the Venerable Bede in Ecclesiasticall History, 731 AD, that her fate was considered just retribution as she had “for vain show adorned her neck with manifold splendid necklaces” (something that has been revived with it’s very own word in more modern times, in the form of ‘bling’). In the 16th century Nicholas Harpsfield, the Archdeacon of Canterbury, published his own ecclesiastical history Historia Anglicana Ecclesiastica and commented that: “Our women of England are wont to wear about the neck a certain necklace, formed of thin and fine silk.”
And gird in your waste, For more finesse with a tawdrie lace. ‘Tawdry’ hadn’t by that date developed the ‘showy/ poor quality’ meaning that we now use but had started on its route there. What began as a name for fine lace ribbon became a disparaging term for the poor quality lace bought by country wenches at rural fairs. When Shakespeare wanted to establish Mopsa, the country bumpkin girlfriend of the Clown in A Winter’s Tale, as less than sophisticated, he portrayed her as interested in frivolous showy dress and gave her this line: Come, you promised me a tawdry-lace and a pair of sweet gloves. ‘Tawdry’ has long departed from any association with saints or expensive necklaces and is now entirely a negative description. To all the Audrey’s out there, sorry but, as they would say around here, you’re just t’Audrey. Is there an English phrase or saying that you would like to know more about? These silks were known as Saint Audrey’s laces. As time went by, ‘St. Audrey’s lace’ became shortened to ‘taudrey lace’. That comes as little surprise to those who live in Yorkshire, where expressions like ‘the other’ and ‘down the hole’ have long been replaced by ‘t’other’ and ‘down t’ole’. In his 1579 poem The Shepheardes Calendar, Edmund Spenser referred to ‘tawdrie lace’, in a warning to shepherd’s daughters: See, that your rudenesse doe not you disgrace: Binde your fillets faste,

and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas angels with dirty faces You have to hand it to the Chinese - despite a bit of a slump they still know how to appeal to their export markets. Not satisfied with almost destroying the UK steel industry, they are now causing concern in Thailands’ temples with those ‘child angel’ dolls. I’m sure you will have seen them. The Luk Thep dolls which are adopted by Thais, and which have an alarmingly high incidence of pale skin and blond hair. Rather like the Cabbage Patch dolls in the UK at one time, except that Child Angels need to be blessed in order to do whatever it is they are meant to do. So far so good. We accept that Buddhist blessings aren’t confined to living things. It is way of life which expats quickly come to respect and even take part in. The new home/car/shrine/business must be blessed, so it comes as no surprise that Child Angels are being taken to temples to receive ritual blessings as well. Except that for some reason, in the case of the dolls, questions have been raised about the ethics of blessing them. In particular the suspicion that some temples may try to turn Child Angel blessings into a commercial venture by charging a fee for the service, something which is strictly against Buddhist rules. Because unlike churches in the UK which charge for weddings, christenings and funerals - extra for the organ and bells of course - the temples are supposed to rely on voluntary donations. Being a monk clearly isn’t as easy as it looks, and they have really been having a tough time of late. For as well as close scrutiny of their dealings with Child Angels, some have even had a bit of a telling off for taking a day trip. For most of us a day trip can be a pleasant change from the daily grind. A change of scenery. Whether it’s just a breath of sea air and an ice cream on the beach, or sheltering from the rain in an amusement arcade, it’s

respite. Not so for monks though, and in particular a boat load of them spotted off Trak a couple of weeks ago who were about to take a dip in the sea. The obvious question of whether or not they planned to swim in their robes is irrelevant, because according to the Office of National Buddhism (I know - a new one on me as well) monks are not allowed to enjoy any recreational activities at all. But what if it was just a Team Building exercise? Or any sort of exercise for that matter - surely monks need a day off like everyone else? Not apparently if it involves any kind of sannuk. Which brings us very tenuously to February 1st 1960, when Yorkshire’s own countryside mag the Dalesman attempted to explain an old Hull saying which you may have heard. Known as the Beggar’s Litany, ‘from Hell, Hull and Halifax, Good Lord deliver us’ dates back to the 1600’s. It is said to be a thief’s plea to be spared the harsh punishments handed out in those three places, where Sannuk was in very short supply in those days. Not that we can verify the first one, but in Hull criminals were hanged for a while, then tied to gallows in the river estuary at low tide. The rest was left to nature. Criminals in Halifax didn’t fare any better, with that town having a device to behead anyone who stole goods to the value of 13 pence or more - about 6 baht in todays money. Enjoy your day!

They have one big advantage over thier rivals, in that they only have the one competition to focus on, while their opponents in this match, for example, are still competing in the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League. The Citizens must not lose this if they are to win the league, and really need to win, if only to dent Leicester’s hopes. The away side will go for this one, as a win puts them in a very strong position, while a loss still sees them in the top three. We think they will stay top with a draw though.

england John Terry has announced that he will spend the remainder of his career playing entirely away from home.
