hotter than july extreme heat suspected of claiming life of hua hin resident hua hin, THAILAND With temperatures continuing to soar all over Thailand, Hua Hin is not alone in suffering desert-like heat and drought, with two people this week dying in Thailand, with one in Hua Hin, due to what is thought to be the extreme heat. The local victim was Pol Senior Sgt-Maj Amnart Ditsorn, who lived in Samorphrong with his wife, who told police that Amnart had just returned from visiting a friend. She said he was sitting on a chair to take a rest and suddenly collapsed, unconscious. The other victim was a farmer in Phrae, which is in northern Thailand, and his body was found in a dried rice field. In both cases the police stated that they suspected the deaths were due to the extreme hot weather. Actual measured temperatures in the Hua Hin area have been hovering around the 35° C (95° F) mark, but the ‘real feel’ temperature, which takes into account other heat factors such as humidity, wind, sun intensity and cloud cover as well, has been registering at around 45° C (113° F). The forecast is for even hotter temperatures through the weekend and into next week. The standard advice in conditions such as this is to stay out of the sun, which is currently at the closest point it can be to our area, and thus there is a much greater chance of sunburn and heatstroke, drink plenty of water, even if you don’t actually feel thirsty, and try to avoid alcohol and hot or sugary drinks as these can make dehydration worse. Keep an eye on children, older friends and relatives, as they are the most vulnerable groups in these conditions, and make sure pets also have access to plenty of clean cool water and shade. In other words, be cool!

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is..... The bitter end To the limit of one’s efforts - to the last extremity. Bitter has been an adjective meaning acrid or sour tasting since the year 725 AD at least. The word was in common use in the Middle Ages and Shakespeare uses it numerous times in his plays and poems, as do many other dramatists. The phrase ‘the bitter end’ would seem, fairly obviously, to come directly from that meaning. But not so fast. Enter, stage left, Captain Smith. Here’s what he has to say, in his publication Seaman’s Grammar, 1627, which is the earliest citation of the phrase in print:
So, is this one from CANOE or not? We like to be definitive and, although the naval origin does seem to have a good case, it isn’t conclusive. This time we’ll sit on the fence and let you decide.

When a rope is played out to the bitter end, it means there is no more rope to be used. But again, not so fast. Folk etymologists are those who say something is true with no more justification than that they would like it to be true. They are thickest on the ground in the area of military and especially naval attributions. People seem to love a sailor’s yarn, and anything with a whiff of the sea is seized on with enthusiasm. So much so that more thoughtful etymologists have dreamed up the inventive acronym CANOE - the Committee to Ascribe a Naval Origin to Everything.

best bar in town Four old guys are walking down a street in Hua Hin... They turn a corner and see a sign that says, ‘OAPs Bar - ALL drinks 6 baht.’ They look at each other and then go in, thinking, this is too good to be true. The old bartender says in a voice that carries across the room, “Come on in and let me pour one for you! What’ll it be, gentlemen?” There’s a fully stocked bar, so each of the men orders a martini. In no time the bartender serves up four iced martinis shaken, not stirred and says, “That’ll be 6 baht each, please.” The four guys stare at the bartender for a moment, then at each other. They can’t believe their good luck. They pay the 24 baht, finish their martinis, and order another round. Again, four excellent martinis are produced, with the bartender again saying, “That’s 24 baht, please.” They pay the 24 baht, but their curiosity gets the better of them. They’ve each had two martinis and haven’t even spent 50 baht yet. Finally one of them says, “How can you afford to serve martinis as good as these for 6 baht a piece?” “I’m a retired tailor,” the bartender says, “and I always wanted to own a bar. Last year I hit the Lottery Jackpot for £25 million and decided to open this place. Every drink costs 6 baht. Wine, spirits, and beer it’s all the same.” “Wow! and back Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas a woman’s place is... It is 40 years since Barbara Walters became the very first US female network news anchor. A prestigious job in the States, and one which is now filled by women worldwide. But it seems strange now to look back and think ‘did that really only happen 40 years ago?’ We have become so used to seeing women in top jobs, and the not so top jobs as well - train drivers, pilots, engineers - it is easy to forget just how recently these achievements have come about. There are always the exceptions of course, notably the worlds’ first three women Prime Ministers - Bandaranaika, Ghandi and Meir - who all took up office during the 60’s. But even then when things were supposed to be swinging the vast majority of ordinary British girls were still brought up to accept that they would become typists, shop or factory workers, before marrying and starting a family. Then for many the first baby meant having to leave their job altogether, if in fact they had been allowed to continue working after marriage at all. Things didn’t improve much in the early 70’s either. I recall the excitement when, working in a public telephone exchange, the boss announced that we would now be allowed to go to work in trousers. We were of course all female workers during the day then - men did the job between 9 pm and 8 am. And although we never met the public the dress code was still strict, which meant the permitted trousers could not be jeans. The mid 70’s weren’t any better. At one job interview, when newly married, I was asked if I planned to start a family. A question which would now see women scurrying off to a lawyer without passing go, but which was then quite legal. Perversely there were also jobs which required women to be married, and the licensed trade was the main

But pub management was an option that me and him wanted to look into once we were married and eligible, so off we went to an interview with a major brewery chain which was building a reputation for providing food in their pubs. All went well until it came to the moment when the (male) interviewer got to the bit about salaries, and proudly announced that the landlady/wife could expect to receive 10 pounds a week all to herself, since they would of course be responsible for food preparation. Needless to say we didn’t give up our day jobs. In some ways Charlotte Bronte fared much better in her chosen career. Born on April 21st 1816, the Brontes home town of Haworth, in Yorkshire, celebrates Charlottes’ bicentennial this year. The creator of Jane Eyre grew up in what was then a thriving industrial town in the midst of the industrial revolution. Yorkshire was truly part of the ‘Northern Powerhouse’, while much of the south of England was still backward and rural. Charlotte and her sisters looked out from their home over smoking mills and moors covered with quarries, a far cry from the scenery which greets tourists to Haworth now. And unlike her predecessor Jane Austin, Charlotte produced less flowery, even gothic, writing. Quite an achievement considering that another well known author Mary Evans, born just three years after Charlotte, felt it necessary to use the pen name ‘George Eliot’ in order to have her work published. Finally another thought for the day. Age is only a number. Weight is only a number. I’ve decided that numbers are really starting to piss me off!

When you reach the entrance to Springfield Golf Course zero your Odometer to zero. Carry on for another 2.75km and Turn Right at the HHH sign. Follow this dirt track road for 1km until you reach a half dried up lake. Take a left and follow the single track road round the side of the lake for 600 m until you reach the car park next to a large blue and yellow water supply tank. Aston Villa release 19-second long season highlights DVD england Aston Villa have released an unexpectedly lengthy DVD of 2015-16 seasons highlights today. The film clocks in at an impressive 19 seconds, which about as long as Villa stayed in contention for the FA Cup. Villa fan Simon Williams bought the DVD on day of release and said he was ‘delighted’ with his purchase, as it contained far more material than he expected. “It opens with Chairman Steve Hollis saying ‘Welcome to the Aston Villa 2015-16 season highl-‘ before there’s a scraping noise like someone dragging a needle over a record and it cuts to static. “Fantastic. It really was all the best bits of our season. “The DVD extras included a ten minute shot of a Balti pie, who was the star performer this season, definitely.” Fans are encouraged to buy the DVD as when they’re done watching it can be used as a drinks coaster, which as Villa fans they’ll be needing quite a lot of. We approached one of the fans favourite players, Joleon Lescott, for his thoughts on the season but he has apparently been given instructions not to say anything more to the media following comments he made after their relegation was confirmed.
