hua hin, THAILAND Most of our readers will know that today, 12th August, is a special day in Thailand, as it is firstly Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s birthday, and since 1976 it has also been designated as Mother’s Day in Thailand, with Her Majesty viewed as the Mother of all Thai people. The Queen turns 84 this year and you can be sure that there will be crowds of people all over Thailand celebrating, not least in Hua Hin, which houses the Royal Family’s palace, Klai Kang Won, which Their Majesties frequently visit. It is not known if they will be in Hua Hin on this occasion, but this will not matter to local Thais, who are likely to show their appreciation of Her Majesty outside the palace and elsewhere in the town. August 12th is a public holiday so all government offices, schools and most banks will be closed, and Hua Hin is likely to see heavier traffic than usual as Bangkokians and others head to the town for the long weekend. Prior to 1976 Mothers Day in Thailand was on 15th April, but the date was changed to reflect both the love of the people for Her Majesty and to fall into line with the most auspicious date of His Majesty the King’s birthday, 5th December, which is celebrated as Father’s Day. Whether you are a mother or not, we hope you have a happy day and that everyone honours their own mother in some way, whether it is a quiet moment of reflection and memories for those no longer with us, a long distance call or treating her to something special. Happy Birthday Her Majesty, and Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums!

Mags Meanderings: From Som Tam To Mushy Peas orange beasties Now that the Olympic Games is well under way let’s leave them to it, and take a look at a brand new spectator sport which is sweeping the planet. I call it ‘Zombie Invasion’, and it costs nothing to watch. You don’t even have to go far to see it. I discovered it by chance last week, while taking a ciggie break outside the Interchange on one of those concrete benches that are supposed to be vandal proof, and are only suitable for sitting on when they reach a certain temperature and it isn’t raining. A participant in the new sport began to walk around in a stilted manner in straight lines. Stopping every few paces to gaze down at his iPhone before making an abrupt change of direction. His route took him in and out of the Interchange, all the while clasping the iPhone steady in both hands without speaking to it. You too will now be able to watch these zombie like creatures in Thailand as they play Pokemon Go. But of course true to form Pokemon Go is already causing accidents near you, so go equipped with a first aid kit. While last weekends’ alcohol ‘ban’ might have reduced the potential for incidents of Pokemon inflicted injury, you can bet it won’t last. Unfortunately here in Hull at the moment there aren’t too many public spaces where a concrete bench on which to sit and zombie watch can be found. This is due to the ongoing city centre face lift in preparation for next years City of Culture status, which involves all those new paving slabs imported from China, and has now caused a national shortage of orange barriers. It seems that only the best re-enforced orange barriers are good enough to prevent the local population falling into holes in the roads, and with Hull currently deploying over 3,100 of them the orange barrier factory hasn’t been able to keep up with demand. It has been suggested that when all the work is finished the barriers should be used
to construct a giant orange Jenga as a lasting memorial to the great upheaval of the streets, but we have enough follies already. Putting them on E Bay instead would probably reduce our Council Tax bills for years to come. Or at least help pay for the proposed glass elevator on the north tower of the Humber Bridge, a project which is still at the arguments over car parking space stage. Perhaps a more realistic argument against the scenic elevator is that the Humber Bridge isn’t sufficiently well known to warrant the cost. On August 12th 1851 Isaac Merritt Singer was granted a patent that would change garment making forever the lockstitch sewing machine. His New York company sold the first machines for 100 dollars - 3,125 dollars in todays money - and within four years had expanded to Scotland, to become Americas’ very first international company. Last but not least we join together in wishing Her Majesty Queen Sirikit a very Happy Birthday, and don’t forget folks that August 12th is also Mothers Day in Thailand.

This means that anyone who was in previous AWOL Challenge leagues will not automatically be re-entered this season. We have sent invites to teams that were in last season and that we had email addresses for, but there are some teams that we do not have these details for, and it is impossible to search the Fantasy website to find them, so if you were in previously and have not received an invitation, please rejoin the AWOL Challenge league using the instructions below. These instructions also apply to anyone wishing to join the league. 1. Log in to https://fantasy.premierleague. com (Register first if you need to). 2. Set up your team if you have not already done so. 3. Click on the ‘Create and join leagues’ link on the right under ‘Global leagues’. brazil INTERNATIONAL table tennis players have confessed that there have been no balls involved at the sport’s top level for 30 years. With the Olympics underway in Rio, officials are holding emergency meetings to decide whether table tennis events can continue as planned now it is essentially fictional. Team GB table tennis competitor Mary Fisher said: “It was an accident at first. “The balls move so fast that they’re difficult to see, and when the final at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics concluded and both players realised the ball had been under the table for the final ten minutes, they were too embarrassed to say. “After that, we pretty much decided balls were an outmoded part of the sport we needed to leave behind in favour of an intricate choreography of bat-waving. “Really we’ve got more in common with

contemporary dance than sport, but sport gets slightly more funding.” Fan Norman Steele said: “If anything it actually increases my respect for the players due to their sublime artistry in weaving a decade-spanning web of deception. “Then I remember it’s ping-pong.” Meanwhile in Thailand, a group of exotic
dancers are petitioning the International Olympics Committee to allow their ‘sport’, which does involve balls, to be the replacement for table tennis. IOC members are expected to indulge in a fact finding mission to Bangkok to help them make their decision.
