pollution free, car free hua hin envisaged in new plan
•An• ambitious plan to reduce the number of private vehicles travelling into Hua Hin by improving public hua hin
transport and creating parking areas north and south of the town has been announced by the Mayor, Nopporn Vuttikul. Currently the Mayor said that the parking areas he is looking at are at Naresuan Camp on Phetkasem Road north of Hua Hin, and the Army’s Non Commissioned Officer’s School in the south. The idea is that visitors to Hua Hin would park their cars there, and take shuttle buses into the town, although this is only being presented as an option at present. Given the general predisposition of visitors to Hua Hin to park their vehicles as close to their destination as possible, AWOL feels that there would need to be additional measures to coerce drivers to abandon their cars and take shuttle buses, either in the form of some kind of bonus for doing so, or penalty for not; there would also need to be special dispensations for residents of the town, such as parking permits for the town centre and residents only parking spaces, but of course, these would also need proper enforcement to work. No detailed plans were announced regarding the improved public transportation, but we hope that consideration will be made to run both existing and new services later than they currently do, as visitors and residents alike are regularly fleeced by the current private transport operators, and in our opinion it is about time that proper metered vehicles were introduced, with fair rates to both passenger and operator applicable. This would not only give visitors a better impression of the town, but would also encourage residents to use these services more, and further reduce pollution and parking issues. It would also help to reduce the horrendous number of fatalities and injuries on the road here.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Egg on To egg someone on is to encourage them and urge them forward. This little term has nothing to do with bird’s eggs. Nor is it connected with the phrase that employs the other common usage of ‘egg’ as a verb, that is, ‘over-egg the pudding’. The ‘egg’ of ‘egg on’ is a straightforward variant of ‘edge’, so to ‘egg someone on’ is to edge, or urge, them forward. Egg and edge both have the look and feel of Viking words and this first impressions turns out to be correct, as they both derive from the Old Norse ‘eddja’. Egg has been used as a verb in English since around the 13th century and appears in print in the Trinity College Homer, in the form of ‘eggede’, circa 1200. To ‘egg on’ appears later. It is used in Thomas Drant’s translation of Horace - Horace his arte of poetrie, pistles and satyrs englished, 1566: “Ile egge them on to speake some thyng, whiche spoken may repent them.”

helicopter trip I decided to take a helicopter trip whilst on holiday in the USA. When in the air I asked the pilot, ‘Can you take me to that place around here that’s named after a shape, where airplanes disappear without a trace?’ The pilot replied, ‘Ahh, you mean the Bermuda triangle?’. I said, ‘No, the Pentagon’.

heaven and hell A man died and went to Heaven. After reaching the gates to Heaven the man was talking with Saint Peter and he asked, “I know I was good during my life, and I really appreciate being brought to Heaven, but I’m really curious... What does Hell look like?” So Saint Peter thought about it a moment and finally said, “I’ll tell you what, I’ll let you see what Hell looks like before you are officially entered into Heaven. Come with me.” And so he lead the man to an elevator and said, “Take this elevator to the very bottom floor. When the door opens you will see what Hell looks like, but whatever you do, do not get out of the elevator.” The man said “Thank you” and then climbed into the elevator and hit the button for the lowest floor. After nearly an hour waiting in the elevator the doors opened and the man peered out. Before him was a lifeless frozen wasteland. All the man could see were huge mountains of ice through blankets of snow. Remembering what Saint Peter said, the man quickly pushed the button for the top floor, the doors closed and he travelled back up to Heaven. After returning to Heaven the man approached Saint Peter and said, “I’m ready to enter into Heaven now, but before I do I have just one more question.” “Go ahead”, replied Saint Peter, and so the man asked, “I thought Hell would be fire and brimstone, but instead all I saw was snow and ice. Is that what it’s really like?” Saint Peter thought about this for a second and finally answered, “Snow and ice, huh. I guess England finally won a penalty shootout!!”

gin, ginger and presidents A Hull bar has banned the use of juniper berries in its’ gin and gin related cocktails. There is no shortage of juniper berries, and it is nothing to do with ‘Brexiflation’. So what’s the problem? Yes you guessed it - health and safety. Apparently there is a risk of death by juniper berry if a customer should accidentally inhale one through their straw and choke on it. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to ban the use of straws? In fact some purveyors of drinks are doing just that and going green by banning plastic straws altogether. If only the same could be said for my local supermarket. Despite going along with the policy to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags - which has been a big success across the UK - packaged root ginger has suddenly appeared on the shelves. Cut into neat same size chunks, with all the knobbly bits removed as well. Do they honestly believe that shoppers need that level of protection for something quite robust that needs to be peeled anyway? And what are they doing with the knobbly bits? Talking of ginger, one centuries old Hull street is called Land of Green Ginger. The exact reason for its’ name is uncertain, but thought to be linked to Hulls’ flourishing spice import trade in the middle ages. This curious name hasn’t escaped the attention of the City of Culture team who, several weeks ago, claimed to have unearthed some mysterious wooden crates during road works in the area. The crates were duly transported to a secret location for testing, where one was found to contain the Golden Nose of Green Ginger. Thought to be an ancient ceremonial item, the nose is now on display where children can go nose to nose with it, learn to play the nose comb, and make nose bags. That should keep them occupied during the summer holidays! On the subject of strange goings on, our regular reader may have noticed that the portion of patty and chips didn’t shoot off into space last Tuesday as planned. There must be a backlog of miscellaneous items waiting for blast off, because the patty and chips have been re-scheduled for July 3rd. It is now fifty years since one astronaut earned his place in the annals of ‘on this day in history’ by being named as the worlds’ first black astronaut on June 30th 1967. At a time when countless black GI’s had been lost in the Vietnam War, with no sign of which of them was the first to fall, it seems odd that astronaut Robert Lawrence Jnr should have been singled out as worthy of special note just because of his colour. That said, Obama will always be known as the first black US President, so
do we simply live in a world obsessed with ‘firsts’, or is colour more important than the job? If so there are no prizes for guessing what Trump will be known as in the future. That’s right - the Tweeter. Last week Trump was accused by the media of trying to pick a Twitter fight with Londons’ Lord Mayor, an allegation which one White House spokeswoman (or should that be ‘spokesperson’?) denied. Meanwhile a senior adviser in the White House condemned the media for its’ ‘obsession with covering everything he says on Twitter and very little of what he does as President’. Could it be that there is simply more on Twitter to cover? At least Trump can be certain that he won’t go down in history as the President who served the shortest term in office. In fact he now occupies third position after William Henry Harrison (31 days in 1841) and James Garfield (199 days in 1881). And finally - we all know that an awful lot of farang commit suicide in Thailand by jumping from high buildings. Or at least that’s what we are told. Now we also have a credible explanation for the high number of tourist deaths and injuries on Koh Samui, where several such incidents have occurred in the area of a remote waterfall. According to the locals a shrine near the waterfall has been insulted by tourists who urinate on it. You have been warned.....

match report IPE Samut Sakhon 1 – 2 Hua Hin City This game was overshadowed by a late change to kick off time. Everybody was travelling for an 18:00 start, but KO had been mysteriously brought forward to 16:00. Fortunately, the team arrived early enough, but the supporters and some officials missed the first half hour of the match. So this report is based on observations in the last 60 minutes only. There had clearly been a significant rainfall before we arrived as the pitch was waterlogged. Travelling support was prominent and very vociferous – there was only one team being cheered on at IPE Samut Sakhon Stadium. When we arrived, the score was still 0 – 0. Soon after taking our seats Hua Hin had taken the lead with a brilliant shot from the far corner of the penalty area by Anon, which gave the IPE keeper no chance. Anon seems to be enjoying his right wing experience. Almost immediately, IPE equalised. Nobody seems to have captured the goal on video, but from my recollection it was a comedy of errors (I’m not saying my recollection is entirely correct). Basically, I think Wichan came to gather the ball under no pressure at all, but maybe slipped on the mud, missing the ball completely. This left the way clear for an IPE striker to chase the ball into the net, 1 - 1. Before we had time to catch our breath, new striker, Amos Bruno Tchakounte (Amos) from Cameroon found himself unmarked on the edge of the penalty area, with the ball at his feet. He needed no invitation to fire the ball home for a beautiful debut goal – game over. As so often the way in Thai football, the second half became all about the match officials. They made some terrible decisions, which caused some tempers to fray. However, Hua Hin were able to hold on to the lead, and at the end of the day were comfortable winners. A special mention has to be made for Aphisit Thetthian, who successfully made his professional debut. At the end of the match, there was a real party atmosphere with both team and supporters. That party atmosphere continued on the supporter’s bus, with dancing in the aisle all of the way home. The early kick off was long forgotten. Onwards and upwards next week, when we’re away to promotion contenders, BTU – a tough test for the team. hash house harriers

english fa unilaterally pulls out of penalty shootouts
••

While few pundits believe that the proposal will be ratified by either FIFA or UEFA, reports are already emerging from Berlin that a Basil Fawlty training centre is going to be established at every Bundesliga club next season, on the off chance that penalty shootouts are outlawed. A Spanish spokesman said, “Que?”.
