booze free weekend adds to low season woes
•As•many readers will already be aware, the double Buddhist holidays of Asalha Puja Day (this year on hua hin
Saturday 8th July) and Wan Khao Phansa (Sunday 9th July, the start of Buddhist Lent), will mean that most establishments that normally sell alcohol will not be doing so on those days. Falling as they do this year on a weekend is not good news for an already depressed low season, and it begs the question as to why the authorities do not consider exemptions for popular tourist areas on these occasions, as it can only help to improve perceptions of Thailand as a destination. Hua Hin appears to be suffering more than many places, due to a combination of local events and policies carried out in recent months, as well as the problems affecting the whole nation. While the current government are not directly to blame for much of this, the very presence of a military government and delay of promised elections is cause for both foreign governments to disapprove, and their citizens to look elsewhere for holiday destinations, while the continued strength of the baht and ongoing price inflation make the country an increasingly expensive destination. The unique conditions in Hua Hin give the appearance that the intent is to destroy many of the town‘s features that made it such a loved destination, with the destruction of the line of restaurants in Poolsuk Road, the planned demolition of the establishments in Naresadamri Road, the rumoured flattening of the night bazaar area near the Hilton, and the mess that exists where the Pattaya ferry is meant to dock; combine these with the overpriced private transport, and the high profile negative events of last year, it is no surprise that Hua Hin is no longer viewed by many as ‘Paradise City’. We don’t like to criticise the powers that be, but many are now saying that enough is enough - the town needs a better plan.

A section for all you budding etymologists where each week the origin of a word or phrase is investigated. This week it is....Full to the gunwales Full to the brim; packed tight. ‘Gunwales’ is pronounced like ‘gunnels’ and it is often spelled that way too. That’s not surprising, as the word is no longer in everyday use - pretty much the only thing that most of us know about gunwales is that they can be full or packed. Consult any search engine and you’ll find plenty of examples of “full to the gunnels”. Nevertheless, ‘gunnels’ really is a misspelling. An early citation of the word comes from Manners and Household Expenses of England, 1466:
the Unitarian periodical, The Monthly Repository, 1834: This is the Island of the Golden Fruit. Look, yonder they come! boats - one, two, three, five, a dozen! all laden up to the gunwales with the juicy balls. The non-nautical use of the phrase didn’t come about until the 20th century. A semi-figurative use was made of the phrase in the advertising for the 1944 Dorothy Lamour film, The Fleet’s In: The Fleet’s In... and it’s loaded to the gunwales with the funniest, friskiest entertainment.
An example of a properly figurative use, that is, one set on land Item, the same day my mastyr paid to Roger Fuller, for tymbre rather than aboard ship, comes from The New York Magazine, for colers [collars] of the maste, and gonne walles... Here’s the definition of gunwales from the OED: Not much has changed in the banking world in forty years it Gunwales: The upper edge of a ship’s side; in large vessels, the seems, and it’s all a long way from gun walls. uppermost planking, which covers the timber-heads and reaches from the quarter-deck to the forecastle on either side; in small Is there an English phrase or saying that craft, a piece of timber extending round the top side of the hull. The expressions ‘full to the gunwales’ or ‘packed to the gunwales’ were first used as literal references to heavily loaded ships. ‘Gunwales’ may have been a 15th century word, but there’s no mention of the phrase until the 19th century, as in

dumb and dumber The sight of a Nok Air plane always makes me smile, it’s that face on the pointed end. They probably got the idea from the movie ‘’Airplane’. But the incident at Don Mueang airport last week involving a Nok Air plane and an airport shuttle bus was no laughing matter. Fortunately the plane was parked up when the bus hit it, which hopefully won’t provide an excuse for anything less than a thorough investigation into the incident, because all drivers of airport vehicles allowed on the tarmac are supposed to undergo thorough training and testing before being let loose. No excuses though from Thailands’ finest for their recent pledges to safeguard the public from ghosts and elephants. Is there nothing they can’t turn their hands to? First it was undertaking the protection of villagers in Amnat Charoen from a particularly nasty ghost. Then rampaging elephants which destroyed a Hua HIn police checkpoint prompted the local Police Chief to declare ‘we will step up surveillance to inspect elephants’ behaviour’. While protection from ghosts and elephants is admirable, shouldn’t the police be calling for back up from monks, and from specialists in animal behaviour? Or maybe I’ve just been in England too long... Talking of which we all know that the English language is a tricky one to learn, even for the English. It used to take us about 14 years before we were considered ready to tackle English at ‘0’ level. (An ancient type of final school exam.) Now it has become a language that can be manipulated to provide new ways of describing things which were once easily understood. But what began as ‘Corporate’ speak, and the amusing Ministerial language of ‘Yes Minister’, has now become a tool to fool people. Last week a Kensington Council official was faced with complaints from some former residents of Grenfell House that they were still paying rent on their burnt out flats. When interviewed about the complaints her reply was an indignant ‘now look here’ followed by an explanation that the 400 families affected by the fire had each been allocated a social worker. And, as if that weren’t enough value for money, that those affected were being ‘triaged into a wrap around service.’ So that’s OK then. Those made homeless should be grateful to still be paying rent for such a fancy sounding service which really means that the Council is carrying out its’ obligatory duty of care.
Other recent examples from Government level have tried to change the way we view child poverty in the UK, which is seen as a growing problem affecting working families as well as the unemployed. In fact around 67 per cent of children in poverty have at least one parent in work - a result of changes in the way some state benefits are calculated. But instead of ‘child poverty’ we now have ‘troubled families’, and instead of unemployment we have ‘worklessness’. It doesn’t take much of a leap to imagine that people will begin to think of themselves as troubled and worthless, rather than poor and unemployed.
On This Day As we reach the half way stage in this years Wimbledon tennis tournament it is 32 years since Boris Becker won the mens’ Wimbledon Championship title. On July 7th 1985, at the age of 17, Becker broke 3 world records to become the youngest ever to win that title, the first unseeded player to do so, as well as the first German to claim the title. Even Andy Murray can’t beat that.

match report BTU Utd FC 1 – 1 Hua Hin City FC Today was going to be the hardest test yet for our new-look side. These guys were put together in very fast time, and have hit the ground running. This was their 3rd match together - veterans. BTU are a good side, sitting just behind the leaders, whilst despite a run of good results, we are struggling to break away from the bottom pack. Some notable changes this week included Ratchapark back to captain the team, Dorian starting in midfield instead of Ali G and Ali Mohammedi sitting in the stand. The weather was perfect for a good game of football. The first half was very evenly matched, with both sides coming very close on several occasions. The tempo was fast, and the game itself was very physical, but Hua Hin were more than a match for this. The second half saw Katchatip make the vital breakthrough with a well-executed finish after a goal mouth scramble. BTU were clearly shocked by this, and really upped their game, creating assault after assault on the Hua Hin goal. Unfortunately, in the process, they started playing on the referee’s compassionate side, constantly complaining. The referee was giving them a sympathetic ear. It all came to a head in what most fans thought was a disgusting incident. You can always tell when a footballer is really hurt – he lays still (no dramatics). Anon was injured, and lay totally still, half on the field and half off it. When the referee eventually realised it was serious, and stopped play, 2 BTU players, including their goalkeeper ran half the length of the pitch and tried to roll the injured man off the field with absolutely no regard to the injury. These players were not even cautioned for such dangerous ungentlemanly conduct, and this was when the referee completely lost the plot – he was actually ranting at the injured player. From that point on, the referee was awful. Ali G was sent off for saying what he thought of him, and Petprasert was booked for not taking a free kick when he was closest to the ball. Despite this being another game which was all about the referee, both teams battled hard, and it was an exciting match to watch. A draw was probably the fairest result on the day. hash house harriers
