Editor’s Note AWR’s Group message is to ‘Enrich Lives’ and this season the Group have filled their diaries with projects and activities focused on this core ambition. From boundless events during the holy month of Ramadan to the relaunch of the Group’s CSR programme, Enriching Communities, (p.12) AWR has immersed themselves in the spirit of generosity and compassion. At the start of this year, Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared 2018 as the ‘Year of Zayed’, to commemorate 100 years since the birth of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE. The values of the Year of Zayed are wisdom, respect, sustainability and human development. As you browse the glossy pages of our summer issue you will find endless activities surrounding the key values of the late Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan which celebrate his teachings. In light of AWR’s humanitarian efforts, HR was honoured with the prestigious Dubai Human Development Award at the Business Excellence Awards by the Dubai Economy in April (p.102) for their contribution to the development of people and resources. During the same proud occasion, our Arabian Automobiles Company, Nissan, received the DSES Award for the Best Service Performance Brand (p.103). To continue the theme of giving, this issue includes a What Inspires You page (p.56), in hope that we can help share motivational stimuli directly from employees. Alongside our lifestyle pages, two new pages have

been added, one titled AWR Cooks (p.80), sharing multiple special recipes from AWR team members, and the other is an industry knowledge page, which this season highlights current digital marketing trends (p.42).

Leading CSR Through Reform: The Launch of AWR Enriching Communities Today’s modern world is changing at a rapid rate. Norms that we have come to know have changed drastically as people’s expectations have changed as well. The true measure of success for an organization no longer lies in their wealth, but their people and their impact on the rest of society. Organizations that integrate business and employees’ personal values become the benchmark to follow for the future. This ability to fully implement Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, in turn, increase the credibility of the organization, as giving back no longer becomes a duty, but a way of life. This special edition of Life Enriched explores just that, in celebration of AW Rostamani’s dedicated CSR Department, AWR Enriching Communities, in line with the Year of Zayed, and the vision of the nation. The launch of “AWR Enriching Communities” is extra special for us because for many years AW Rostamani has been part of successful CSR activations in which we have given our all in giving back to the community, enriching the lives of those we’ve been so lucky to meet in the process. Our new CSR program falls in line with government policies that have helped set up plans like Dubai Vision 2021 which in turn have helped guide the group set strategic CSR objectives, charters and roadmaps. It helps define AWR’s

organizational and operational vision, direction as well as setting the correct CSR pillars for the group to follow. These pillars include: •

Stakeholders- Instilling green supplier policies, anti-corruption, increased stakeholder engagement, and ensuring stakeholder satisfaction.

With 2018 announced as the Year of Zayed, AW Rostamani has a sound duty to invest in creating CSR initiatives, events and awards across the UAE that promote values of tolerance, progression, environmentalism and leadership, as well as charity. The late Sheikh Zayed established a global school of tolerance and coexistence because he knew that from the Union’s humble beginnings, the UAE’s uniqueness lay in its ability to welcome different races, religions, and cultures without abandoning its social and cultural identity.

Through this unique project, AW Rostamani will take its employees on a “trip” to the world of volunteerism! All AWR employees will be gifted with an ‘AWR Enriching Communities’ passport as an onboarding gift. The volunteerism project will be executed as a trip with several phases to cover along the way, similar to the concept of citizenship. Employees have to complete several initiatives in phases and receive stamps in their passports on completing a CSR activity. Once successfully registered, volunteers must complete three volunteerism initiatives within 12 months, volunteers are entitled to receive great rewards and a grand sense of achievement and satisfaction. By making the concept of volunteering fun and interactive, AW Rostamani hopes to encourage its community to continuously

participate in future activities. The group understands that CSR should be based and rooted in the organizational culture as well as its DNA. CSR must also make itself explicit in a series of promises and public commitments, which must be upheld at all times. These are the values that Abdul Wahid Al Rostamani, AW Rostamani’s Late Chairman helped install in the organisation. He was not only a prosperous businessman but also a true, inspirational leader who cared about his employees and the community. Without his leadership, AW Rostamani wouldn’t be where it is today. Abdul Wahid’s ideals and attributes can be felt embedded in the core values of the Group and his passions and lessons remain. The Board of Directors have continued the Late Chairman’s ideologies and they collectively reflect his qualities of integrity, commitment, passion and never being satisfied.

Iconic Nissan 370Z NISMO • The Nissan 370Z NISMO is the third offering from Nissan’s in-house performance division to be introduced to the region • Nissan 370Z NISMO marked by distinctive exterior appearance and unique interior features The 2018 Nissan 370Z NISMO has launched in UAE for the first time, as part of the global automaker’s continued drive to bring tuned, highperformance NISMO models to the market. With a 3.7-liter V6 engine and 350 brake horsepower, the powerful 370Z NISMO is an iconic car that is set to be another favourite choice among enthusiasts throughout the UAE. NISMO, which is Nissan’s motorsport and road car performance range, was introduced regionally in 2015 with the launch of the Nissan Patrol NISMO – an instant fan favourite has seen wide success throughout the region. Following that, the legendary Nissan GT-R NISMO was rolled out in the Middle East the following year. The 2018 370Z NISMO is powered by a 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL). The advanced powerplant is

rated at 350 bhp at 7,400 rpm and 276 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The VVEL system optimizes intake valve open/close movements, ensuring that airflow to the combustion chamber is both efficient and precise. The 370Z NISMO’s enhanced engine power and acceleration applies an exclusive H-configured exhaust system design and muffler tuning, along with optimized ECM (Engine Control Module) calibration. The 370Z NISMO boasts a true motorsport look and feel throughout the driver-centric two-seat cabin, complete with black and red Recaro® leather-appointed seats with Alcantara® accents that ensure the NISMO theme throughout. Designed with Recaro® specifically for the 370Z NISMO, the seats provide a more uniform body pressure and better all-direction holding during spirited acceleration, braking and cornering.

NISMO-styled Interior: The interior features red seat trim and stitching with NISMO logo, an Alcantara®-appointed leatherwrapped steering wheel and NISMO red tachometer. The tachometer and speedometer include an “initial sweep” function, coming alive when the 370Z NISMO is first started. Like all Nissan 370Z interiors, the layout is built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger’s seat. In the rear is an open cargo area with easy accessibility. The instrument panel includes a 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock,

power windows with one-touch auto up/down function, power door locks with auto-lock feature and automatic climate control. Other interior details include a smooth leather-wrapped shift knob and aluminum-trimmed pedals. Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Start, Bose® in-dash AM/FM/CD/ AUX 8-speaker audio system, two subwoofers with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls, USB/iPod® interface and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System.


Advanced Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Active Sound Enhancement (ASE) systems are standard on the 370Z NISMO. The ANC system generates cancelling sound to remove undesirable low frequency engine noise while preserving invigorating sounds of engine performance, providing a more “pure” sound. The system is also utilized on the Nissan GT-R. The ASE enhances natural engine sounds to help bolster the driver’s acceleration experience.

ThAdvanced 350-Horsepower VVEL V6 and NISMO-Tuned Suspension The 370Z NISMO is fitted with a refined 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM), Adaptive Shift Control and manual shift mode with paddle shifters. The standard 370Z Coupe doublewishbone front/4-link rear suspension design suspension is specially tuned for the 370Z NISMO, offering exceptional handling – including higher spring and stabilizer bar rates and increased roll stiffness and front and rear damping factors, as well as a 0.6-inch wider track width (compared to non-NISMO models). The 2018 370Z NISMO also features a tight, rigid body structure with a strut tower bar brace and a pair of performance dampers, which quickly and efficiently react to help control body vibrations from road input via the tires, contributing to the 370Z NISMO model’s outstanding handling and performance feel. From The Expo to the Digital Era: Executive Interview with AWR’s Head of Leasing of Al Rostamani Real Estate, Mohamed Alblooshi about the New Trends in the Market

The Real Estate industry of Dubai has seen many changes in the last decade, from the announcement of the Expo 2020 to the development of a more intelligent tenant who has access to information regarding tenancy agreements, rental comparisons and regional residency laws. It is an interesting industry to watch change and develop. We sat with the Head of Leasing of AWR’s Real Estate arm, Al Rostamani Real Estate to find out what he has experienced over the last 10 years and what we can expect from his portfolio of commercial and residential builds. What changes have you seen in the Dubai Real Estate market industry since you started your career? Since the announcement of the Expo in 2013, we saw the market change overnight. As we know, the hot topic of real estate conversation has been ‘yearon-year rental prices are dropping’, yet in reality this is not the case. The prices stormed up in just a matter of hours and we have been seeing the steady decline of that unsustainable leap since. The introduction of 2020 changed the needs of the market, today we are now entering a time where we are experiencing a correction of this jump and stabilisation of the market. The prices are mediating back to the normal market rate of the region prior to the excitement of the Expo announcement. It has also been interesting to see the development of our customer’s knowledge of the market. As many industries are experiencing during the digital era, the growth of the internet has allowed customers to gain a lot more information than they have ever had access to before. With this knowledge of the market, tenants are well-informed and they often know what they want before they even enter our apartments. In this case, we have catered to this change and developed our properties to meet the needs of the modern tenant. We have also seen tenant’s tastes towards more luxurious interior offerings. With

many new units in the market, tenants expect nothing less than modern facilities and interior finishes. This year alone, we have refurbished multiple of our buildings to ensure that we continue to meet these needs. We pride ourselves on our quality facilities and sourced materials. Marble, for instance, is in huge demand, yet unfortunately, you can see a lot of bad marble in the region, and we ensure all the materials we use in our builds are of the highest quality throughout. Tenants are also more health conscious than ever seen before and thus all our residential builds provide gym facilities and many include modern pools. Several of our builds with pools offer both female only pools and mixed. We give tenants the opportunity to use the pool for private events after pool hours, which has been highly appreciated by our tenants. Yoga facilities will be added to many of our builds this year. Similarly, our new buildings also offer family areas and activity spaces for children to play. What kind of properties do you lease? Which of your buildings are the most successful, and why do you think that is? We currently have 293 commercial units and over 2,356 residential units, reaching across Dubai and the Northern Emirates. Many of our units are in prime locations, for instance, we have three locations on Sheikh Zayed, DXB Towers, Twin Tower B and the 21st Century Building. Relating back to your previous question, we have seen changes in transportation trends. Before, our tenants were predominantly vehicle owners, however now we are seeing a lot of our ex-patriate tenants opting for a vehicle-free lifestyle who rely on public transport. The metro and the tram has encouraged us to choose locations close to these modes of transport. Another very popular buildings with fantastic locations are The Trio, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Mall of Emirates, Al Jaddaf situated in the heart of Bur Dubai and Al Mankhool. We have witnessed a very impressive tenancy of our Trio building. Since we launched the building in August, we have achieved high occupancy. The building is

in a prime location as mentioned before, and is high quality, luxurious and prices are very competitive. The rooms are very large, very modern and include beautiful finishes. When we launched the space, we experienced many direct walk-ins as the building is very attractive and so we found many people were intrigued by the building before we even marketed the rooms. The 21st Century building is also one of our very top properties. One because it is on Sheikh Zayed Road and has all the facilities anyone needs. Second, because it has one of the best views on the higher floors that reach the sea, city walk and Box Park. And lastly, because we have recently finished a grand refurb of the units which are being very well-received. Al Jaddaf is a new building we have just begun leasing and is already in good demand so far. We believe this to be due to us hitting the market with great prices without reducing on the quality. It is a very luxurious building. When people visit this building they are instantly impressed by the price and quality. The modern customer is looking for convenience, what new trends which enable the convenience of the customer are you experiencing? The convenience of our customers is our top priority and we aspire for a seamless experience for our tenants. As mentioned previously, we like to place ourselves in the shoes of our customers and have studied each step of the tenancy agreement cycle to find any moments we can adapt to make it easier and painfree. First of all, everyone is going online. And therefore the trend now is to focus on online transactions with no physical documents. This way our tenants no longer need to take long journeys to our offices, taking time and effort out of their busy schedules. The easier the payment cycle, the more attraction we are gaining from customers. We have also added customer service reception desks to our new buildings, which cannot be found in any of our competitor residences. This is purely unique in the market, which allows customers direct access to a member of

our staff for any needs or requirements they may have. This is a similar experience you would expect from a hotel and enables the tenant to have access to communicate with the landlord and the tenant at any given time. In addition, we have integrated the processes of applications for ejari, purchased advanced operations software and modernized our FSI systems. In the near future, we will also be adding a chatbot to our website for 24/7 service support. It is great to see how you are differentiating yourselves from other properties in the market – Do you think this is the recipe behind your success? We would have to say it is a combination of always placing the customer first, offering unique, never seen before services such as our customer service points and personalized welcome gift packs for our tenants, the high quality facilities and interiors and the overall appreciation we hold for our customers. For us, by applying these deliverables we have been fortunate to experience a stable position within the market and haven’t experienced the many challenges that we have witnessed around us. At Al Rostamani Real Estate, we have ensured that we place the tenant’s needs at the heart of every business decision and thus have adapted our services to cater to their needs in a demanding and competitive market, which has kept customers and welcomed new tenants. Our objective is to not only meet tenant’s needs, but to over exceed what is expected and deliver the unexpected.

100 Years of a Timeless Design Collaboration with a Sculptor, Painter and Silver Artist: Henning Koppel Henning Koppel 1918-1981 Henning Koppel was born in Copenhagen in 1918. The father, Valdemar Koppel was a journalist for the daily newspaper Poltiken and was always working, so it was mainly the mother, Elise, who took care of Henning and his older brother Nils. While the boys were still small, she took them on a grand tour of Italy and filled the boys with enthusiasm for art and culture, an interest which continued their entire life. Koppel’s passion led to him leaving school when he was 15 to pursue becoming an artist and in 1937 he was accepted into the Danish Academy of fine arts where he was educated as a sculptor, like Georg Jensen. Koppel was pleasant, funny, charming and open. Koppel married his wife Jytte Koppel and produced two daughters, Hannah and Nina. Nina Koppel is the master mind behind Georg Jensen’s renowned Fusion Jewellery. Henning Koppel passed away 27 June 1981 and since then Georg Jensen have continued a close collaboration with his family, ensuring Koppel lives on in all his beautiful designs.

When Georg Jensen started the company in 1904, he begun a tradition of inviting other designers and artists to collectively design and develop new products.

The collaboration was established in 1946 and over the years Koppel has created a range of designs within homeware, cutlery, watches, home décor and jewellery.

This is a tradition that Georg Jensen has continued today, and this year the brand celebrates one of the most important design collaborations with the Danish sculptor, painter and silver artist Henning Koppel, who in May of this year would have turned 100 years old.

This season, Georg Jensen will be extending the Koppel range with designs in sterling silver, stainless steel, glass crystal, stoneware and black PVD, representing the colour universe (white, blue and black) often found in his characteristic drawings.

The new launches also represent Koppel’s rare talent for translating his unique, simple design language into any material. We sat with the Georg Jensen team in Dubai to learn more about some of the products which will be revealed during the launch of Henning Koppel 100, as well as some of the Koppel iconic pieces.


Wave Bowl The wave bowl design was first created in 1948 in sterling silver. The iconic design is still available in silver today. In addition, the masterpiece is available in stainless steel. Koppel has drawn the bowl a thousand times and could reproduce the form in one long stroke without lifting the brush from the paper. From the side, it looks like a horizontal number eight that loops infinitely back on itself. The wave bowls add a dramatic sense of elegance to any dining room table or coffee table as a statement table piece. Whether you keep decorative florals or fruits inside, this piece cannot go unnoticed in your home.

Koppel Vases The shape of the vases originates from Koppel’s initial vase drawings and design, today the design is kept alive by his daughter Hannah. Koppel kept a small blue stoneware version of the vase on this work table. The vase was made at a little, local ceramic workshop. The vase would often hold a New Dawn rose, which he would pick from his garden. This piece is subtle and elegant. With room for only single flowers or a very small brunch, the vase encompasses simplicity and beauty.

Caravel In 1963, Koppel won Der goldene Loffel (The Golden Spoon) for the Caravel cutlery due to its refined way of combining functionalism, idiom and material. The cutlery creates a bold statement in a table-setting and brings contrast and focus. The design has a modern expression, making it highly relevant today.

Koppel Pitchers Some of Koppel’s most renowned designs are a series of pitches based on his inspirations from form and movement. The pitchers include proud, erect necks and enormous handles with swing up over the sprout of the pitcher as an organic part of the form. The pitchers have a playfulness to them and the silver versions have been named the Pregnant Duck, the Swan and the African lady.

One day, Koppel was teaching at the Goldsmith College and was asked why he made such huge handles, his answer was: “It is like when a small child looks out between his father’s legs and discovers the world outside, you can experience that kind of a fairy tale by looking through my handles.”

Koppel Watches When the Koppel watch was launched in 1978, it broke with tradition and introduced a daring simplicity by substituting the numbers with dots, which was unseen at the time. The simple, understated, timeless watches are as relevant today as they were when they were first designed and are appealing to all age groups. The design idiom also ensures that the time pieces are cherished for a lifetime.

Koppel Hurricanes This design stems back from its original design made in Pewter in the 70s. The smaller size hurricanes are designed to host tea lights and the two larger pieces can contain a low candle. The air holes at the bottom ensure that the candle melts evenly. The Hurricanes bring a cosy atmosphere and light to any outside setting such as a balcony, terrace, and garden or by the pool. Hurricanes in many cultures, are used for celebrations, symbolising the wish for a bright future.

Building Industries have dedicated departments for both engineering drawings and authority approvals in order to speed the process and ensure that staged handovers can be made with the requisite approvals in place. The strategy is also mindful of the technical aspects of the hospital infrastructure to ensure the service isolation is considered, without causing disruption to the hospital operation during any following phased works. During construction, progress and programming are carefully monitored to foresee any potential delay, shortfall or conflicts that will affect the overall outcome. The system takes a view across procurement, manpower, materials, design changes, production rates and budget, where shortfalls in any one area may

compromise the project outcome. Graduated handover enables the operator to spend more time on understanding interfaces and systems before occupation. AW Rostamani Building Industries employ a ‘Countdown to Completion’ process that drives the focus and activities required for the close out and testing and commissioning activities, to ensure the facility can be occupied as early as possible in a defect free state. The system revisits the outputs from earlier reality-checking decisions and ensures the suggested actions are in place for commissioning and end-user training. The integration of consultant inspections, sign off and authority approvals further ensures the timely handover of the asset. Post-completion, and during the initial aftercare phase, the Building Industries project team remain resident on-site for a defined period to assist and close out any latent or emerging problems and issues. This process involves regular dialogue with the hospital’s technical services team, to find out how the installation and systems are performing and operating, and whether they meet the operators, and ultimately the

patient’s, expectations. Adjustments can be made where necessary and reports are fed back. It is a measured and monitored process, with the advantage of being a pro-active approach, rather than re-active, which leads to a quicker resolution of issues. AW Rostamani Building Industries’ methodology is a strictly defined combination of logically related practices, methods and processes that determine how best to plan, develop, control and deliver a project throughout the continuous implementation process until successful completion and handover. Established by the Dubai Real Estate Corporation (DREC) to oversee the management of its assets and grow its real estate portfolio. Wasl’s operations span over various sectors; from residential and commercial properties, to industrial plots of land and from leisure and entertainment to hotels and serviced apartments. Expectation In light of Wasl’s philosophy to provide quality real estate solutions that surpasses the expectations of their customers while enabling them to meet their goals, Lumina and Smart AE committed themselves to the Wasl’s core objectives. In addition, the logistics for complete transition were complex as the buildings were populated during the transformation, which left no room for error. Solution Lumina began undertaking an energy audit in order to propose the energy saving solution. This was followed by Energy Saving LED Retrofit Proposal from GE Lighting. This was combined by a Stage 2 site survey by Smart AE. In order to enhance the energy savings and meet the project requirement, lower wattage downlights were implemented to match the existing onsite dimension. During this stage, Lumina were also able to create the correct colour temperatures on site in order to proceed into the next stage of the project. Stage 4- Material Submittal: After finalizing of existing BOQ, Lumina prepared Material Submittal. The physical sample of each product was provided for approvals along with Material Submittal. To conclude, Lumina and Smart AE performed a mock up. The performed mock up for proposed GE LED Lighting Solution as per the Material Submittal and performed Pre (Before Installation of LED Lights) and Post (After Installation of LED Lights) Lux Measurement fulfilling the requirement of Project. Installing over 46,212 light points into Wasl, Lumina’s lighting’s solution was based upon utmost efficiency, intelligent positioning, combined with high-quality products. The luminaire offers 80 CRI and delivers a class-leading efficacy of lumens per watt of 100-130 Im/W. Its unique modular design means Wasl residents can fine-tune the light output and the wattage

to suit each individual application – offering ultimate flexibility. Results and Benefits The LED transformation has resulted in Wasl properties benefiting from lighting quality solutions while reducing energy consumption and operational costs. Additionally, the project has resulted in a grand saving of service life of 65,000 hours and the new LED fittings resulted in a significant maintenance cost saving as well as a reduction in the disruption to day-to-day operation. A more ergonomic driving position:All of the vehicle’s functions from the various displays to the centre console are within arm’s reach, making for easier use during every day motoring. Everything is positioned around the driver in an enveloping L-shaped cockpit configuration. Moreover, shoulder width is amongst the best in

the segment (1,441mm in the front / 1,390mm in the rear). •

A focus on the comfort and support provided by the sculpted, enveloping seats, with particular emphasis on the use of dual-density foam.

Specific work on ensuring the suspension is both safe and effective: the dampers and bump stops have been revised for even greater comfort. Meanwhile, the steering is more precise and responsive through the fact that there are no rubber mountings between the sub-frame and body. The New Megane GT road holding remains outstanding, however, thanks to specific work on the front wishbone bushings.

The rear suspension joints have also been revised in order to improve the way irregularities in the road surface are absorbed. The beam has been modified to provide bigger micro-steering movements of the rear wheels when turning in to corners for a more reassuring ride at higher speeds.

Take the mix into a clean cloth and squeeze out all excess water to ensure it is dry. Add grated halloumi cheese, finely chopped onion to the mix along with finely chopped coriander and mint leaves in the same bowl. Whisk both eggs properly and add it to the mix along with bread crumbs and season it with salt and pepper. Add more bread crumbs if needed to bind the ingredients together.

Consistency of the mixture should allow it to shape them into 4 - 6 round and thick patties and then place them in the fridge for about 30 min. to keep them intact. Heat a frying pan with a splash of oil and fry the patties both sides till you see a crispy golden yellow texture and then ready to be plated. Best served with a sauce made of 1 tablespoon of curd mixed with lemon zest, coriander leaves and a sprinkle of olive oil.


When the time’s up, take the lid off and cook for a further 15 minutes or so until the sauce is lovely and thick. You can add extra spices here to adjust the flavor to your taste. Scatter with coriander leaves and serve with rice or quinoa, Indian breads and mango chutney on the side.

Pumpkin Chickpea and Coconut Curry Danielle Baileigh, Marketing Manager of Apartment 51’s Ingredients 1 pumpkin (roughly 900g), 4 shallots, 4 cloves of garlic, 1 fresh red chilli, 1 bunch fresh coriander, Coconut oil, 20 curry leaves, 1 teaspoon turmeric, 2 teaspoon of curry powder, 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder, 1 x 400 g tin of chopped tomatoes, 2 x 400 g tins of coconut milk, 2 x 400 g tins of chickpeas Method Chop the pumpkin into 3cm chunks and cut the ginger into matchsticks. Pick the coriander leaves and finely chop the stalks. Pour a good splash of coconut oil into a large saucepan and place on a high heat. Add the garlic, red chili and shallots, then reduce to a medium heat. Cook until golden, stirring occasionally, then add the mustard seeds, curry leaves, and coriander stalks and fry until the curry leaves go crispy. Add the dried spices and stir until the spices and oil mix to create a paste like consistency, then slowly add the tomatoes and coconut milk. Bring to the boil, then add the pumpkin and chickpeas. Reduce to a low heat, cover with a lid and simmer for 45 minutes. Check occasionally and add a splash of water if it looks a bit dry.

First prepare the batter: Put the wheat flour into a big bowl, add baking soda and sugar. Mix thoroughly. Grate the butter on a coarse grater into the bowl and mix with the flour and sugar using your hands, so that it turns into crumbs.

Allow the batter to rest for 10 minutes Heat a non-stick pan. Once the pan is hot, begin pouring the atayef and lower the heat to medium-low. For small sized atayef, pour 1 tablespoon or 2 teaspoons of the batter. The atayef should start to bubble around the edges. Wait until the atayef are done. When the atayef is no longer shiny, the atayef are done. Make sure to cook the atayef over medium-low heat. Take the atayef off the heat, place them on a clean kitchen towel and fold the towel over them to cover them. If you do not cover the atayef they will dry out. Once the Atayef have fully cooled, place about 1 tablespoon of filling on the pancake and pinch the sides together to close it ž of the way. Dip the open area into the crushed pistachios. Serve with simple syrup or as is and, enjoy!

Land freight is the only possibility for last-mile deliveries or for regional transportation like Intra-Europe or Intra-Gulf.

OCEAN-FREIGHT Tankers, bulk carriers, RO-RO carriers and container ships are the most important means of Ocean transportation of our time. Each year they carry billions of tonnes of goods along a few principal trade routes. Containerization has revolutionized global cargo shipping, bringing vast improvements in efficiency and flexibility. KARFF handle containerized, RO-RO and break-bulk movements. Freight rates have become deciding factors for traders to close their deals which is why forwarders now increasingly need to play the role of a rate negotiator with the shipping lines. “Our aim is to bring down the rates to our customers’ required levels and mind you, these rates could be way below the market levels. Besides rates, another challenge is to find suitable routes and sailing schedules for our customers, to ensure that they match the delivery date of their further customers. With KARFF’s expert team members who are constantly in touch with the carriers, they never offer just one option to their clients. KARFF provide multiple options to aid their customer’s choice to select the most suitable one for them. Alternatively, customers will inform KARFF of their target dates, whereby the KARFF team will respond with matching sail options to meet their criteria. In the automotive industry, RO-RO vessels are the most economical freight option but due to their in-frequent sailings and limited port calls, they are often found to be unsuitable per customer requirements. To counteract these problems, KARFF provides containerized movement of vehicles also, where multiple vehicles are loaded into each container which reduces the cost per vehicle. As container vessels have high service frequency (2-3 per week across carriers) and they have access to almost all the global ports thus the containerized option has become a preferred option for most of our

This prevents their customers going to their competition by offering them a complete, unparalleled service. These additional services are, container transport, export/ import customs documentation, bill of lading finalization, DO collection, customs inspection. Sandeep adds “We work as a single-window service provider to our customers, giving them peace of mind.” The market although fruitful is naturally undergoing consolidations. Larger shipping lines are buying out smaller companies which have led to fewer shipping lines operating in the last couple of years. This could post challenges upon rates, however, KARFF is confident of maintaining excellent rates and service levels for their customers and will retain their position as a major player in the ocean-freight movement. Kashida joined Apartment 51’s collection of unique, luxury homeware in January of last year and has gone from strength to strength. The brand fits perfectly into Apartment51’s pursuit, to bring truly unique pieces that would fit beautifully in their customer’s home which ooze refined, contemporary design. and the expatriate community who are looking to add the inspirations of their Arabian surroundings into their home in a very beautiful, unique and abstract way. Questioning the traditional visual manifestations of calligraphy on scrolls and architectural facades, the team sought to bring these beautiful letterforms to life. Their aim was to transcend the classic ornamental approach to calligraphy by creating functional design pieces that respond to people’s ergonomic and lifestyle needs.LE spoke with the creative designers behind Kashida to learn more about their success story and design inspirations.

Dubai and from our office I lead Kashida’s business development and operations, heading the company as CEO and Mirna is our Creative Director, handling design and marketing. What does ‘Kashida’ mean, and why did you choose it? A ‘kashida’ is actually a term in Arabic calligraphy denoting the glyph that extends between two Arabic letters, acting as a bridge. The name suited the brand perfectly, as Kashida bridges between Arabic calligraphy and product design.

Tell us about who is behind Kashida?

Where did you get your source of inspiration from behind Kashida?

Kashida was founded by myself, Elie Abou Jamra and my business partner Mirna Hamady. We are headquartered in

after graduation, we began experimenting with Arabic letterforms. The calligraphy around us was all two-dimensional, plastered on decorative scrolls, mosque facades, etc. Inspired to take this traditional art to new levels, Mirna and I began creating life-size letterforms, slowly extracting functionality from the shapes. We soon realized the beauty of bringing Arabic calligraphy into people’s homes through functional design pieces based on Arabic letters. There and then, Kashida was born.

a lot of leadership skills, as well as the know-how of dealing with different types of people. In the end, it is my job to focus everyone on a single goal. In my Graphic Design course at university, I was always fascinated with Arabic calligraphy and even wrote my thesis on the subject.

Have you always been creative? During your childhood, was owning a design brand something you aspired to?

We offer home accessories, furniture, corporate gifts and event souvenirs. Home accessories range from candleholders, photo frames, mirrors, trays, coasters to larger pieces such as floor accents, door handles and wall dĂŠcor. Our furniture pieces target the residential sector, ranging from coffee tables to armchairs and bookcases.

Mirna: I have always loved arts and crafts ever since I was a toddler. While other kids would play with Barbie dolls, I would spend hours coloring, making beaded necklaces, building blocks, etc. In high-school, I knew I was going to study Graphic Design at university. I guess design has always been my passion, never a job! Elie: Owning a design brand is not something you expect, it sort of comes naturally. I have always loved to work with teams and develop ideas from scratch. As a child, I was a boy scout which gave me

Who is your customer? We target the design-savvy individual who appreciates high-quality finish along with the unique concept behind every piece. Our client is one who realizes it takes one or two bespoke pieces to transform a house into a home.

How do you keep striving for product innovation and how do you make sure your ideas are always fresh and relevant? We work in two ways: keeping an eye out for market need and gaps, as well as a more internal process of pushing the boundaries of Arabic calligraphy to create forms that people have not seen yet. 90% of what we sketch in-house is not released until the time is right, meaning, when we feel the audience is ready for cutting-edge, experimental design. The


beauty of Arabic calligraphy is that it has existed for centuries, and will continue to evolve as the years go by. It is an intrinsic component of the visual fabric of the Middle East. We are proud to work within this discipline, adding our own touch to such this beautiful art. Do you have any exciting plans for products coming up next season? We are working on a beautiful new serveware line, along with further experimental pieces. What are your favourite items and why? It’s hard to pick! We really work hard on each and every item that is released. How did you transform your concept into a reality? When we founded Kashida, both of us had full-time jobs in Beirut. We would spend our weekends at the wood-working workshops, testing our designs. Basically, we taught ourselves the basics of product design from trial and error. Our graphic design background emphasizes a more 2-dimensional approach, while handson experience formed our know-how of product design, the building block of Kashida. Did you experience any challenges along your journey, if so what were they and how did you overcome them? Yes. Many, many challenges. In the early days, it was about convincing producers to actually attempt to produce our designs in reality. Dozens said no and left us without confirmations. We started with 7 designs and now have over 70 unique designs! However, as the brand developed, the operations and distribution requirements became more challenging, along with the need for a strong online portal which could answer market need which came from across the world. We see challenges as ‘growing pains’, which must be looked at as a positive re-enforcement that the brand is growing. Challenges are addressed with great attention in order to reach our next milestone.

We understand that you are very proud of the beautiful woods you use for your furniture items, how do you source your materials?

Dunking Hoops and Scoring Baskets In light of AWR’s recent accomplishment of the prestigious Dubai Human Development Award, the Group has proven their ability to exceed efforts in the development of its people and resources, from the workplace to the overall wellbeing of their employees. AWR Group prides themselves in offering many self-development opportunities, both in the office and on the playing field. Amongst over 35 sporting activities, AWR provides gym memberships and competitions to keep AWR staff fulfilled in their efforts to remain active and healthy. For this issue of Life Enriched, we caught up with the speedy players of the AWR Basketball team to hear about their game and what makes them tick and shoot hoops. When was the AW Rostamani Basketball team established? We are one of the youngest sporting teams of the Group. Therefore, we are currently bringing plenty of

ambition and new energy onto the court. We had our very first game at the beginning of last year.

What tournaments have you competed in? We have already competed in many tournaments, to name a couple: Jazzville Corporate Tournament and Yalla Corporate Tournament. During the Yalla Corporate we came the 1st runner-up.

Our team leader and coach is Mije Carandang. He has been playing Basketball since he was a child and shares his passion for the game with high levels of excitement. What are your ambitions for the team?

What highlights and awards have there been and why were they great?

To be able to build our AWR team into the team to beat, in all tournaments!

Our players, Mike Carandang and Elmer Endozo have both seen some magical moments this season, winning 5 Awards between them! Both players have inspired the rest of the team and have shared their achievements and celebrations.

How often does the team train? We are currently training every Wednesday night at our Sonapur Staff Accommodation basketball court. It’s a great place to catch up with the team and train,

We would have to admit that we have accomplished a lot of trust and friendship amongst our players. We started as teammates but we are now truthfully all great friends.

Team spirit is essential. It creates a fruitful and harmonious work environment thus uplifting the company spirit.

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL BAJA GIVEN NEW DRIVE The Dubai International Baja powered by Nissan and AW Rostamani brought the World Cup cross country rallying back to the UAE, with a powerful assembly of top drivers and riders battling for honours across the spectacular Al Qudra desert terrain. Nissan Patrols were used by an experienced ATCUAE team to plot a new rally route through the Al Qudra desert. The rally was the first of two big World Cup dates for the ATCUAE in March. AWR Employees Receive General Health Checkup at Head Office On 28th March, AWR conducted our first General Health Check-up here in our Head Office followed by the same for our DIC Yard Management staff on 25th April 2018. Around 200 employees took advantage of the free check-up and consultation from AAC Yard Management, KART/KARFF, PDI-Service & Spare parts on which some of them got doctor’s advice/ prescription for having high blood pressure and sugar level which has been shared for monitoring.’

Training session on Defensive Driving for Drivers at KART In all 76 drivers were attended the training in two sessions and the main purpose of the initiative was to increase awareness about the importance of safe driving, build on the best driving practices on the road and most importantly reduce accidents. Drivers were shown possible consequences of bad driving, with real examples of accidents that have occurred recently. Lot of emphasis was given to “Driver’s Responsibilities on Road”, Updates on RTA regulations, to maintain vehicle health and R&M expenses, Preventive measures need to be taken while driving on road on which the primarily obligation to ensure safety of self & other road users. In line with AWR Group’s focus on Corporate Social Responsibility (Road Safety) and Employee Development, there was a Refresher training session on “Defensive Driving” organized by KART

25% to 30%. It was also observed that 37% of the cars received were within the mileage of 80,000 kms, whereas around 60% of the cars ranged between 81,000 kms to 500,000 kms. The top most mileage car traded-in had clocked more than half a Million Kms on its odometer. The top 5 car booked during the period, were the Nissan Xtrail, Nissan Patrol, Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan Sentra and Nissan Altima, consisting of around 83% of the total volume booked during the Automania Exchange period. Georg Jensen hosted two opening events in the new boutique on the 1st floor of the Fashion Avenue at The Dubai Mall. In a bid to herald the occasion, a series of cocktail gatherings were held within the store; one in the morning for select VIP media, and one in the evening, an intimate affair for the brand’s VIP guests and celebrities. AUTOTRUST impressively and most successfully executed a first of its kind women-only road trip, named AUTOTRUST SHE DRIVES, in the UAE on Friday 23rd March. Continuing the spirit of the celebration of women during the month of March with International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, AUTOTRUST She Drives saw over 600 women drive from the Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre to the Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort, Fujairah where a host of activities awaited them. The event was free for the participants was publicized through 4 Radio Channels – Arabic, English, Hindi and Malayalam of Channel4 as well as through the AUTOTRUST Facebook and Websites.

This was followed by entertainment and lucky draws which included gold and pearl necklaces, hotel stays, dinner vouchers

and many more items. Shift Car Rentals offered ZOE the electrical vehicle for a weekend as a part of the lucky draw. Mr Sumod Balakrishnan GM AUTOTRUST thanked the participants, the volunteers from AUTOTRUST as well as other Departments and the sponsors for making the event a grand success. After a High Tea, the participants commenced their journey back home after what many of them said was a His(her)storic day. International Women’s Day March was a month immersed in celebrations around woman with Independent Women’s Day and Mother’s Day falling within weeks of one another. The women in the head office of AW Rostamani united for an International Women’s Day photo shoot, to represent some of the women at AWR to share on LinkedIn and Social Media. Over 60 women, including Ms Huda Al Rostamani, attended along with over 20 nationalities. The response on Social Media created over 200 engagements online on the day.

INFINITI of Arabian Automobiles invited all AWR team members to participate in a successful CSR Blood Donation campaign, in association with the Dubai Health Authority on the 18th March at the INFINITI Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road. 70 people attended and 50 were able to donate blood, saving the lives of 150 people in the UAE. Each donor gave 400ml of blood, donating a total of 20 Litres of blood.

Strategic Ventures Customer Meet Events with CEAT and AMARON

AWRT in association with AMARON Batteries conducted the Mini Customer Meets in Dubai, Ajman and Fujairah in February. The customer meet attended by the dealer sales counter staff is aimed at enhancing the technical and product knowledge of AMARON batteries.

This innovative initiative by AWRT was much appreciated by both AMARON and the dealers, as it has helped the dealers to get more insight about the product and thus educate the customers about the benefits of AMARON batteries. AMARON batteries have many unique features and AMARON is the only automotive battery in the world which has the highest cold cranking ability which can operate even from as low as -17 Degrees to +60 Degrees. The Product which uses the world-class Johnson Controls Technology is a ZERO maintenance battery AWRT has sold over 250000 batteries in the UAE Aftermarket since inception in 2012.

AWRT conducted the CEAT Mini CustomeMeet in Abu Dhabi on 15th March 2018 aiming to offer a refresher training about the product to the dealer salesmen. The event was attended by both CEAT and AWRT Team and over 50 customers. During the meet, Rajagopal BR, Head of Allied Products explained the features of CEAT and also introduced the forthcoming passenger car tyre range, CEAT Secura and CEAT EcoDrive. Both the products are an enriched and improvised version of the current passenger tyres CEAT Gripp LN Series. The tyres are tested in CEAT’s tyre testing facility in Spain.

On March 8th, AWR and Sharaf DG went head-to-head in a season 3 cricket match. AW Rostamani (AWR) beat Sharaf DG (SDG) by four wickets in a Rashid Alleem Premier League (RPL) Season 3 match.

A movie night was organized at the staff accommodation, located in Al Quoz on Friday 27 April. We saw many of the AWR

staff come together to enjoy the outside entertainment and the screening of Bahubali 2.

Chasing a total of 148, AWR reached the target for the loss of six wickets in the 20th over. Muhammad Kamran Abbasi (33), Balaji Jayaraman Iyer (48) and Mohammed Ashiq Narasimhan (44) were the main scorers for AWR.
