The Mayfair Fashion Magazine has finally launched, and has caused great excitement in the area. Readers, contributors, and clients alike have shown great enthusiasm from the start, and it gives me great pleasure to release this exclusive publication. The MFM team is small and launching a new periodical is a difficult task at the best of times, so please excuse any errors while we iron everything out. Each issue of MFM will offer readers interesting news and reports from the fashion and entertainment industries, as well as showcasing exclusive photography through shoots with current celebrities and aspiring models. For the launch issue we are proud to present Hollyoaks’ finest; Emma Rigby and James Sutton. Through huge and shocking storylines Emma won ‘actress of the year’ at the recent television awards and is a huge inspiration to every young woman out there. James has just completed a recent storyline exit on Hollyoaks, and by demonstrating his huge acting abilities the showbiz circles are expecting big things for James in the very near future. The main focus of the magazine is to offer the people of Mayfair and the surrounding areas a free publication whose focus is on modern fashion, while keeping readers up to date on local news and goings-on. By including premier luxury brands, the best Mayfair businesses, and a connection to current need-to-know topics and individuals; MFM will satisfy a community’s desire for information. Please feel free to check out the website, and sign up for email updates regarding the latest MFM news. The website offers readers the opportunity to view the latest issue online, which is worth bearing in mind if you’re out of the neighbourhood when the latest issue is released. THE HOUSE OF YESLAM

THE DEMANDS OF TODAY'S WORLD Yeslam, The Man, The Brand

Artist, designer and businessman, Yeslam, is from a traditional oriental culture, in which fragrances have always occupied an important place since his childhood in Saudi Arabia and his student years in the Lebanon. It was, in fact, during these early years that he promised himself he would one day create perfumes and other luxury merchandise in honour of the influences of his formative years.

Page 9

In order to create exclusive timekeeping instruments, the pre-eminence of which meets the demands of its prestigious clientele, Yeslam inaugurated a workshop dedicated to luxury watch making in the summer of 2006. Located in the heart of Geneva, it houses a team of expert watchmakers who apply the same traditional and rigorous standards of excellence as those which made Geneva world-famous for fine, innovative and precise timepieces. Thus, every exceptional watch, including those with multiple complications signed by Yeslam is subject to the greatest attention, each of its components being meticulously worked and decorated before it is finally assembled. With this new workshop, Yeslam writes the first pages of a long history that will assuredly be illustrated by many masterpieces of ingenuity and

creativity. Recently, Yeslam’s passion for flying and aircraft has seen him put together a first of its kind and very rare timepiece named the Aviator. It is the first and only timepiece that gives the ability to read True Air Speed on the bezel of the time piece. This is something that has been seen as a marvel among the fine luxury watch industry.

You can enter the world of Yeslam via his boutique stores in Geneva, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Mekkah and Kula Lumpar. Yeslam is now setting foot into London and some of the Yeslam collection can be found on display exclusively at the Sheraton Park Tower in Knightsbridge. For a look into the full product range please visit www.yeslam.ch. Inquiries into purchasing or finding out more can be made through these outlets.

His long exposure to the cultures of the Middle East gave Yeslam a philosophical and aesthetic instinct. Then, having developed an ongoing appreciation of Occidental science and technology from an early age, this unusual artist successfully wanted to unite the age-old refinement of the Orient with modern European state-of-the-art expertise.

Yeslam started by launching his first fragrances «Yeslam» For Him and For Her in 2005. This early success was swiftly followed by the opening of five «Yeslam» brand boutiques stocked with the finest leather goods, luxurious accessories such as sunglasses, cufflinks, silk scarf and other precious items that are hard to resist for the cognoscenti who appreciate the very best and understand the value of true luxury.

The finest and most singular materials are used in the creation of all of the hand-crafted Yeslam branded products including leather goods, fragrances and accessories, which convey that instant feel and appearance of a product of the very highest quality. The same fundamental desire to achieve the highest standards and attention to detail are applied to all of Yeslam’s luxurious merchandise.

EMMA RIGBY Emma Rigby is a young fledgling actress, currently occupying the role of Hannah Ashworth on Channel 4's teen soap Hollyoaks. At only 19, she has already won the British Soap Awards 'Actress of the year' award. Supported by shocking storylines, Emma has generated great national press and positive reactions from people within the show business industry. There is no doubt that we can expect great things from Emma in the near future as she builds on her success. From 15, Emma auditioned for the role of Hannah in Hollyoaks. It only took the production team a single audition to recognise her talent and signed her up for the role there and then. Today, Emma enjoys driving to work and relaxing at home afterwards with her boyfriend, rather than attending the numerous showbiz parties she's invited to. Next year Emma plans to leave the Hollyoaks cast. Despite this being disappointing news for all her Hollyoaks admirers, Emma plans to stay away from other soaps and aspires to work in theatre or British film. Here, we chat exclusively to Emma, she shares her views on this year’s X Factor, and she tells us why we’ll never see her on Celebrity Big Brother! Mayfair Fashion Magazine: Hi Emma! Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, what do you think of the photos? Emma Rigby: Hey! Yeah I think they’re really fab! My pleasure.

MFM: So. Who is your early favourite on this year’s X Factor? ER: Diana; she is so unique in her voice and very unusual. To my taste. I would buy her music. MFM: Do you think she can go all the way? ER: Maybe! However, I see the final being between Laura and Alexandra.

mayfairfashion 14

Laura is so professional in what she's doing and has a great effect, and Alexandra has an amazing voice. MFM: Do you watch any other reality TV? ER: Well I slightly follow Strictly Come Dancing and keep up to date with that. Although I love watching Super Nanny and seeing all the kids playing riot! MFM: Which TV programmes did you grow up watching? ER: Brookside & Coronation Street! MFM: Do you like to eat healthily? Do you cook yourself? ER: Yeah I like to cook and concentrate on my diet. I live at home with my mum and she cooks me fish and vegetables which keeps me going! MFM: After a long day’s filming, is it hard to switch off from your character Hannah? ER: Not at the moment, I don't find it hard at all. However, when I was filming the anorexia storyline and crying all day; that became quite draining when I would finally get home. MFM: How would you say you’re different from Hannah? ER: Well actually we are quite similar. Although I’d say I’m a lot more mature myself, and confident. Saying that, I think we have similar personalities; friendly and chatty and quite geeky! MFM: Who’s the most talented actor or actress you’ve worked alongside? ER: Well I haven't really worked with many people as of yet. To date Jamie Rigby (not a relation). Jamie is currently in the play ‘Eric’s at The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool and is a really talented actor. MFM: What would your typical weekend consist of? ER: On a normal Friday night I will just be relaxing from filming during the week, a night catching up on the TV and chilling. On Saturday if my boyfriend is playing at home or nearby, I will go and support him and maybe go out for a meal in the evening. On a Sunday morning, I have a singing

lesson and then I’ll just relax in the afternoon, whilst also learning my lines ready for the week ahead. MFM: So you’re not out clubbing each weekend? ER: Haha! Not at all! I like to go out to a special event such as a friend’s birthday or an awards do! But generally I’ll go out once every other month - if that! Whereas my friends are mainly single and are students, I have work in the week and a boyfriend. MFM: What’s the most expensive thing you've bought lately? ER: I went to The Trafford Centre today and nearly spent £900 on a bag I’ve been looking at! However, I decided to keep the money in the bank! MFM: Do you go shopping much? ER: Yeah I like to go shopping. However, I’m very careful about my money because it won’t last forever. It would be lovely to have lots of amazing bags and shoes but when I’m out of work I’d just look at them and think that was the train fare to London for an audition. MFM: What are you planning after Hollyoaks? ER: Well I leave Hollyoaks next year and as of yet I’ve not got any other commitments. I’m looking into a British film or maybe a stint in musical theatre. I really want to build my experience up when I leave Hollyoaks, and I’m not looking towards another soap although one-off drama pieces interest me a lot. MFM: Finally, let’s say you have been out of work for a while and it’s approaching Christmas, would you appear on a show like Celebrity Big Brother or I'm A Celebrity to make some quick cash? ER: No! Although I can see there is big money in that sort of stuff, I wouldn’t do it myself it’s just not what I want to do. If I was in that situation I’d just get a normal job in a bar or something, in fact! MFM: Ha! Well thanks very much. Good luck. ER: No problem, thank you!

The Italian Design Group has recently opened an office in Mayfair, exciting a lot of residents and potential clients in the area. The Verona-based company offer customers a premium interior design service while also offering great discounts on products compared to their competitors’ rates. The group’s main showroom and design studio is located in Verona, Italy. The new Mayfair office, after a consultation with clients, will order furnishings and fittings directly from the Verona headquarters which can save clients up to 30% compared to the process of sourcing required items separately. Past clients of The Italian Design Group are found all over Europe, working wherever their clients need them. The group offers over 1,000 unique pieces of furniture, modular kitchen and bathroom designs, as well as furnishings and fittings of the highest quality. The group is capable of handling an entire redecoration project with dedicated teams and partnerships in the following areas; project

Page 19

management, building work, architectural services, and furniture brokerage. The group was founded by architect and interior designer Michela Auert, who thanks to referrals from satisfied and grateful clients has built up an impressive client base. Michela studied architecture for four years and then spent a further two years studying interior design. After achieving her qualifications she gained her first job in the industry, and shortly afterwards established The Italian Design Group. Michela says that behind the business she finds real personal passion in her work, which clearly shows in the projects she has worked on. The man in charge of the new Mayfair office is Elliot Farrow-Shaw. Elliot joined the group after six months working locally within the Mayfair property sector, where Michela spotted his professional approach to business. Elliot studied interior design in Milan for three years before moving to Mayfair. The Italian Design Group’s clients will

benefit from its ability to keep everything under one roof. Where other interior design businesses might outsource construction work or redecoration jobs, the group will source all the materials required itself, and supervise all aspects of the project, which will be divided among it’s particular departments. This retention of control can be found right down to the transport level, as the group even has its own haulage infrastructure to ensure quick deliveries and punctual completion dates. The Mayfair community has already been great to the Italian Design Group, which has already managed numerous projects here remotely from Verona, demonstrating the need for an office here. One past project in the area was a penthouse behind the Ritz Hotel, which incorporated a lot of material from the group’s Lago collection. The client wanted the entire apartment refurbished and redecorated, and the group were more than happy and more than capable to oblige.

I might just be a big kid, but in my humble opinion gifts of great value such as jewellery, hand-crafted watches, and rare items of sentimental value are always better reserved for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, retirements, and other special personal occasions. Christmas is about having fun and enjoying time with family and friends more than anything else, so here are some suggestions that are guaranteed to put smiles on people’s faces.

What’s Hot For Him 1) Remote Control R2D2 Projector: Just like in A New Hope, R2 could be in your living room projecting your brand new film or online gaming session up to an equivalent screen size of 80 inches. This R2 comes with a built in DVD player, has USB connectivity, a memory card reader, an iPod dock, and appropriate video connections for the latest gaming consoles and home cinema audio systems. This model is a fully-functional remote-controlled moving replica that runs on a rechargeable battery pack (although it’s recommended to leave him plugged in while watching or gaming), and he makes all the noises he did in the films. And as if that wasn’t enough, his accompanying remote is a scale model of the Millennium Falcon. £1,899 www.r2d2-projector.co.uk

2) Time Crisis 2 Arcade Machine: The best instalment of the classic arcade game that every guy in the world has

mayfairfashion

Page 20

played and loved can be in your living by Christmas. It might not fit under the tree but it will provide hours of juvenile enjoyment. Ideal for your bachelor pad or games room. £3,347 www.libertygames.co.uk

3) Mightymast Six-in-one Mahogany Home Casino and Bar: If you feel like having a go at being Danny Ocean without the risk of ending up trapped in a seedy back-room in Vegas, this will be your item. The smartly presented standalone unit include a wine rack and shelves underneath, while the tabletop can be configured to play Craps, Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, and Texas Hold ‘Em. The night in with the guys just got interesting again. £500, available online.

4) Airboard 130 Classic Sled: This winter take this inflatable supersled to the slopes with you. It fits nicely in your suitcase and when pumped up becomes a 50mph slopeslider. The best thing about it? No brakes. £179 www.iwantoneofthose.com

5) Clarkson Thriller DVD: He might not be the most attractive guy on TV but there are four-hundred-and-twelve thousand people on facebook who think he should be Prime Minister. In his latest solo automotive escapade Jeremy Clarkson rolls around Europe

in some of the most exotic cars in the world, and at one point takes a break to indulge in some gratuitous vehicular destruction with the Royal Marines. He also manages to find some time to tell us about his research and development programmes into anti-speed-camera technology. £19.99 www.bbcshop.com

STOCKING FILLERS: Crap Trumps: Crap Cars: Possibly the most innovative parody brand we’ve ever seen. Just like the games of Top Trumps you played with your friends as a child you shall square off against your opponent but this time comparing the real life old bangers we started off driving. See whose vehicle has more percentage surface area of rust, and find out which car has the fastest windscreen wiper speed of them all. Also in the series; ‘Crap Inventions’, and ‘Street Safari Banger Rally’. £8.00 per pack www.craptrumps.com

Prank Golf Balls: Is your best friend or one of your office mates taking his golfing just a tad too seriously? Get on the green with him and see his face when one of these mischievous deceptions gets the better of him. Upon being hit, one explodes into a cloud of smoke, one disappears into a cloud of thin mist, and another, when struck, emits a plume of stringy ribbon. Save the best one for last though, as the unputtaball is constructed to be unbalanced with one half heavier than the other; it will never go in a straight line, and your victim will never be able to sink it! £7.99 for a set of four www.iwantoneofthose.com

What’s Hot For Her 1) La Prairie Cellular Cream Platinum Rare: Swiss skincare experts La Prairie have just released a very limited edition skin cream that surpasses all previous benchmarks. Only a very limited number of The Platinum Rare cream will be released. It is the first skincare product to contain the rare metal Platinum, usually reserved for high-end jewellery. La Prairie claim the platinum actively enhances the creams effects. It comes with a gold and silver ‘applicator’ stick in which is set a Swarovski crystal. £500 for 50ml.

STOCKING FILLERS: Y-front Purse: Probably the epitomy of the giggly little girl inside, these little purses look like miniature novelty pairs of undies. Available in a few eye-catching colourful patterns, this is going to make the girls laugh at brunch. £6.95 www.iwantoneofthose.com

2) Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle ‘Alexandra’ Rosé 1997: This is widely regarded as the best vintage rosé in the world. In 2005 it won a trophy and in 2006 a gold medal, both from the International Wine Cellar. The IWC award it 94 points out of 100. The vintage was named Alexandra in commemoration of the wedding in 1987 of the daughter of Laurent-Perrier’s chief winemaker, Bernard de Nonancourt. £1,350 for a case of six bottles.

4) KitchenAid Pink Artisan Mixer: It is one of the most functional and reliable kitchen mixers on the market, and now it’s available in pink. Brilliant! What’s even more interesting though is that with every purchase of an artisan mixer unit, KitchenAid will send £50 of the profit to the charity Breast Cancer Haven. A feel-good gift then. £359.98 www.kitchenaid.co.uk

Scented Rose-petal Bath Soaps: Designed (very convincingly) to look like rose petals, these slivers of soap will melt in your bath releasing the calming scent of roses. Ten out of ten for romance. £4.99 per box www.iwantoneofthose.com

3) Voodoo Knife Block: Italian designer Raffaele Iannello came up with this stunning and humorous knife block. It comes with five knives including a carving knife, paring knife, bread knife, and large and small chopping knives. The knives, which appear to be stabbing the red stick figure, are held in place by magnets within the sculpture, and at the back all the sharp blades are shielded by clear plastic sheaths to prevent nasty accidents. £59.95 www.iwantoneofthose.com

5) Sleeping Beauty 50th Anniversary DVD: Every single little girl over the past half a century grew up watching and loving this film, and now Disney are releasing an updated remastered version on DVD. This film is enjoyable for absolutely everybody to watch, thus releasing you from the boredom of having to watch another modern chick flick DVD with your girl this christmastime. £19.99 www.amazon.co.uk

BARCELONA

FEATURE Barcelona is a marvellous city which caters to your every need when looking for a break abroad. You can fly direct to Barcelona’s El Prat airport with several budget airlines. Once through customs, the city centre is barely 20 minutes away by road. When I say there is something for everyone in Barcelona, I’m not exaggerating. The city is a haven of inspirational architecture and historical buildings, as well as being full of fine restaurants and shops for those searching for a finer taste of life. Barcelona also boasts amazing nightlife within the Olympia district and reliable beautiful weather. As a result the resort has huge appeal to younger holidaymakers. One attraction I must recommend is the Nou Camp football stadium, home to the Barcelona football team. Even if football isn’t your thing, the Nou Camp will certainly appeal to you. Football is at the heart of Spanish culture, and the stadium’s architecture symbolizes the passion of the locals. Following the theme of culture, Barcelona’s cathedral should most certainly be on your to-do list. This amazing building can only be described as a triumph of art and engineering, and if you’re lucky enough to catch a communal mass then I guarantee you a humbling experience. Barcelona is filled with great hotels at competitive rates. For the best in service and opulent surroundings I recommend the Juan Carlos hotel. This fine institution maintains the highest of standards in every respect and is located just 10 minutes from the main attractions. Also, with the view of the Nou Camp stadium from your room this is the ideal place to stay should you be in Barcelona to watch the football. If, however, you’re on a budget, head towards Port Olympia. Not only can you find economical hotels but you will also reduce the number of taxi journeys required as most attractions are within walking distance. Port Olympia offers great traditional restaurants and bars which are well worth checking out and it’s where you will find most bars and clubs come evening time. For a great night out dancing I recommend the local incarnation of Ibiza nightclub chain Pacha. The club is located down the road from the Nou Camp stadium and offers great club nights throughout the week, especially on the weekend. You will find great dance music at Pacha, with the

mayfairfashion

DJs mixing out Funky House, Deep House, and the various genres of Electro. If dance music is not your thing then be sure to check out the casino. There is only one casino in the city and not only does it offer tourists the chance to flutter a few Euros around the tables, but also supplies great evening entertainment and food; be sure to have your passport with you for security reasons though. Barcelona benefits from a predictable warm climate so ensure you spend your early afternoons on the beach. The well maintained sandy beaches are a great way to relax during your break and a swim in the sea is always welcome to cool off. Those not accustomed to Spanish culture be warned; during the afternoons the shops and restaurants will close for an hour whilst locals leave for their siesta. La siesta is part of Spanish culture and is an age old tradition of napping in the early afternoon to escape the daytime heat. As a result, one notices evening entertainment and restaurants starting later into the night and lasting earlier into the morning. The shopping experience Barcelona offers doesn’t disappoint. You will find all the high end luxury brands in the city centre, as well as some amazing boutiques stocking some very unique designer brands. In addition, be sure to pop into the local shops where you will always find small but unique items for friends and family. Barcelona left a great impression on me. Should you get the opportunity to travel there in the near future you will not be left disappointed. If you’re planning a long weekend away, Barcelona is the perfect European coastal city, so make sure to pass by soon

Avista restaurant review Nestled in the heart of one of London's premier hotels, Avista offers fine dining at a price that won't break the bank. Opened on October 2nd of this year, it occupies the site that was formerly Brian Turner's restaurant at the Millennium Hotel, in Grosvenor Square. Head is Michele Granziera previously spent six years at the London Fine Dining Group's Zafferano under head chef Andy Needham. Having undergone a major refurbishment following the takeover, it now features its own street entrance on Grosvenor Square. We entered via the hotel and I was immediately impressed by the layout of the room and by its warm decor. The tables are designed with an original flair and the seats are very comfortable indeed. The room also boasts its own bar and one long table, suitable for larger parties. The menu is quite diverse, combining a variety of both rustic and contemporary Italian dishes. I opted for buffalo mozzarella with aubergine and tomato tart to start, followed by slow-cooked pork cheek, mashed potatoes, spinach and red wine sauce. The mozzarella was tasty although slightly rubbery and awkward to cut

mayfairfashion

but it was complemented well by the tarts which offered a firmer, contrasting texture. The pork was cooked to perfection and the portions were generous. I would have liked the mashed potatoes to be a little more consistent but the spinach more than made up for it with sublime flavour, offset impeccably by the red wine sauce. For dessert, I took the advice of restaurant manager Francesco and tried the hot chocolate foam with raspberries and ginger. Good advice. Simple and delicious yet not too sweet, this is a must for anyone visiting the restaurant and wins my praise. The wine list also deserves a mention for its diverse selection of fine wines and beverages, including some noteworthy cocktails. Overall, we had an excellent meal. The staff are both friendly and efficient and I got the impression that the whole experience could be as quick or slow as you wanted. If you are looking for a fine Italian dining experience in Mayfair, look no further than Avista. For reservations, call 0207 596 3399 or e-mail reservations@avistarestaurant.com.

Taman Gang

Launch, Mayfair... This month bore witness to the exciting re-launch of the infamous Taman Gang restaurant as a full breed club. The new venue, on the corner of Park Lane and Oxford Street, is positioning itself to become the premier late night destination for Mayfair’s elite clientele. MFM was invited along to the exclusive opening party on a calm Tuesday night, and we were impressed by the efficiency with which the club’s team worked on opening night. The evening started with a cocktail and champagne reception, giving guests a chance to take in the surroundings along with calm lounge music from the Taman Gang Resident DJs. The service throughout the whole night was flawless, with guests being rapidly escorted straight into the main club area by the friendly and helpful door staff and hosts. The evening continued with complimentary selections of Taman Gang’s Indo-Chinese cocktail food. From vegetable and hoisin-duck spring rolls, to bitesize chicken satay skewers and seafood dumplings, these were a showcase of the catering options available to private hire clients. They all tasted authentic and were welcome fillers that kept the crowd going all night. As the evening progressed, so did the musical style, as a number of Taman Gang’s DJs demonstrated their skills. The guests all seemed comfortable in the new surroundings and partied their

mayfairfashion

way late into the night. Celebrity guests in attendance included supermodel Erin O’Connor; X Factor’s Brian Friedman, and socialite Calum Best, among others. Since launch night, Taman Gang has already caught up with the other London VIP-Clubs, boasting a full house on both nights of its first weekend, as well as already having entertained members of London’s glitterati. The club’s name ‘Taman Gang’ is Balinese for Park Lane, and the interior maintains the strong Indonesian theme. The luxurious surroundings compliment a very exclusive venue, which is available for private hire from Sunday to Wednesday. Taman Gang’s promotions manager Joshua Brenner has big plans to assert Taman Gang as London’s number one night spot. He currently oversees the exclusive weekly club nights on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; a job which includes providing the very best DJs and enter tainment, as well as guaranteeing excellent service from every one of the club’s personal hosts and staff. Taman Gang will comfortably accommodate around two-hundredand-twenty standing guests, in a strategic layout that incorporates three or four separate areas of reservable tables and booths, all brought together by a central dancefloor and bar. The DJ booth is ideally located in the rear

corner of the club, giving the DJ full view of the evening’s crowd. For a truly VIP night out, ask for a table ‘behind the bar’ where a group of secluded tables are almost completely hidden from other patrons without being too far from the floor. The drinks menu is diverse, with an enormous number of different spirits and brands available by the bottle for those with tables, which is a refreshing cut above just the usual selection of vodka and whisky. The cocktails are plentiful and the bar staff mix them with great flair and style while you wait. The champagne and wine list is not as comprehensive as the spirits list, and while it will be enough to satisfy most clients, more experienced connoisseurs will not find some classic labels and vintages that they might have expected. In keeping with the times and laws, Taman Gang has a sectioned off area for its smoking clientele just outside the main entrance. Going above and beyond the usual ropes or fencing, the area is marked out by refreshing looking potted trees and shrubs. Another service the club provides outside its doors is a valet parking service, which is a godsend when trying to park among the streets of Westminster council. Not many other elite Mayfair clubs offer valet parking. Taman Gang is a refreshing oriental offering among the other clubs in the area, and it’s here to stay. Pass by soon and check it out.

Q: What has four wheels, is more powerful than a BMW M3, a Jag XK-R, or an Aston Martin DBS, and emits nothing more than speed, stability, and a bucket-load of sex appeal? A: The Lightning GT

Somewhere in Peterborough there is a shed. In fact, it’s quite a big and expensive shed. And in that shed are some boffins. In fact, there are quite a lot of eco-friendly boffins working on a project. And just like every project that starts in a shed, this one is going to revolutionise something. This time it’s the British automotive industry. These boffins are employees of The Lightning Car Company Ltd. and they are working on a marvellous piece of machinery called the Lightning GT. It is, in a few words, the first electric supercar. The first thing about this car is its looks. The Lightning’s fastback, long-bonnet design is reminiscent of the timeless sporting forms of the Bristol Fighter, the TVR Tuscan and the Ferrari Maranello. This car will not only still look cool in ten year’s time; it will probably never grow old. It has the smoothest lines since the Aston Martin DB5 that Sean Connery drove. The 20 inch lightweight aluminium alloys come as standard, with the optional upgraded rims being nothing less than magnesium and carbon fibre.

mayfairfashion

The Lightning is powered by four Hi-Pa Drive electric motors connected independently to each wheel. These motors produce incredible amounts of torque (that’s ‘oomph’ to you and me) for their size, and the whole concept has two serious benefits. The first is four-wheel-drive from four separate sources, meaning that if one breaks down, you’ve still got three to go on. The other is a phenomenal weight reduction, as the electric motors have eliminated the need for any gearbox, clutch, axles, differentials, or exhaust system, not to mention a few hundred kilograms worth of engine. The motors get their juice from a bank of thirty NanoSafe next generation batteries. Each is approximately the size of a conventional 12-volt car battery, and unlike current Lithium-Ion batteries, NanoSafe cells function perfectly between minus thirty and seventy-five degrees Celsius, getting around the problem other electric cars experience of running flat in cold weather. The manufacturer claims the final production car will boast the electrical

equivalent of a tremendous 700bhp. That’s roughly equivalent to forty-one of those little G-Wiz’s buzzing around Central London, or in fuel-guzzling terms, it’s almost three Porsche Caymans. However, the boffins limited the Lightning’s top speed to 130mph. That means in theory it could use its 700 horses to potentially exceed 200mph, but the batteries would run out of juice sooner than a fat kid potentially running after an ice cream van. To be frank, the Lightning’s top speed is more than plenty; where and why will you ever need to go faster? Instead, the car has been engineered to deliver an autonomy of about 200 miles (322km) under normal driving conditions from a full charge, which is more than enough for a whole week of city driving. You might think that completely rules out the possibility of long-distance driving, but the Lightning’s most impressive party trick is the ability to suck up a full charge in only ten minutes from a 250kW external fast-charge unit, available as an

mayfairfashion mag:Layout 1

4/11/08

20:35

Page 43

optional extra. If this wonder-charger fits in the boot (which Lightning says can handle your golf clubs with ease), then the only thing stopping you driving to infinity and beyond, albeit with a ten minute break at the motorway services every three hours, is a nationwide power cut. Without the external charger you’ll be looking at a plug-in-the-wall recharge time of about three and a half hours, which could conveniently coincide with a round of golf followed by lunch, or a day at the races, where this beauty would look right at home. The most off-putting drawback of electric sports cars to date is the lack of a gargling combustion engine making its presence known. This is by most people’s standards the very smallest chink in otherwise impenetrable armour, but even so, the Lightning GT has a trick up its sleeve to appease the most die-hard motoring enthusiasts; an external engine-tone generator included as standard. The interior should be impressive, with part leather/part alcantara trim, electric tinted windows, and high-quality sound system as standard. SatNav, air-conditioning, and full-leather trim are extras. Another thing the boffins have spent a lot of time on is passenger safety. Anti-lock brakes and Traction Control are standard, which is impressive considering both had to be reengineered since the car has neither conventional brakes nor a conventional drivetrain. The NanoSafe batteries contain no heavy metals or toxic materials and are more thermally stable than conventional car batteries. The passenger compartment is protected from all sides by honeycomb crumple zones similar to those built into today’s Formula 1 cars. We don’t know what it will be like to drive until it’s released, but the boffins claim the production car will have almost 50/50 weight distribution and an unusually low centre of gravity thanks to the low position of the weighty battery banks; both of which will contribute to excellent handling and road-holding capabilities. Unlike conventional motor engines, maximum power and torque will be available from standstill to top speed, which means you’ll get the same pulling power at 90mph as you will at 20mph. The first Lightning GT’s will be delivered in the second half of 2009, for roughly £130,000 before extras. That’s about the same as a Ferrari F430 or a Lamborghini Gallardo, but much better value for money since neither of those have any decent boot space, or 700 brake horsepower on tap. In addition, Lightning estimate that owners of the GT will save up to £17,000 pounds every year thanks to exemption from various road and car taxes, as well as savings made by using electricity instead of purchasing expensive fuel. For London commuters, driving a Lightning also benefits from exemption from the congestion charge. What other modern supercar can boast that it will pay for itself in seven years? I don’t know any. The Lightning Car Company Ltd. is already taking deposits for the Lightning GT.

GRAND MASTER ASH Grandmaster Ash is one of the country’s biggest professional drummers and percussionists. A true raw talent, Ash has yet to allow the commercial element of his profession affect his passion. You can find Grandmaster Ash performing around the UK, on stage at concerts, at private events, and even as a refreshing live act in night clubs. Ash is one half of the two man rock band The Red & Blacks. In stark contrast, by day Ash manages and teaches pupils at the percussion school that he founded, called The Pro-Drum Academy. Another side of Ash’s schedule sees him in recording studios with a vast score of bands and artists, all using his unique talent to compliment their own tracks and albums. Grandmaster Ash has huge ambitions to capitalize on his musical talent. Ash recently signed exclusive sponsorship deals with Aquarian drumheads and Natal Percussion. He will be taking bookings to perform in London very soon. Mayfair Fashion Magazine talks direct with Ash. Here’s what the Grandmaster had to say: Mayfair Fashion Magazine: When you started off, which drummers at the time did you look up to and admire? Grandmaster Ash: Buddy Rich. He was an inspirational guy; all the drummers in the world know who he was. He was a legend. If you can aspire to be like him then you’re already halfway there.

MFM: Are you self-taught? Or did you go down the schoolboy route with all the grade exams and percussion lessons? GA: I did all the grade exams, and I was properly taught. I’ve been playing as long as I can remember. So yeah, I’m a trained musician.

mayfairfashion

MFM: Do you think that new drummers benefit from the discipline of the lessons and grades? GA: Definitely. There’s no point without the discipline. It’s easy to hit some drums with some sticks, but it’s an art to make it sound like music. MFM: Do you think you were born to take the sticks to the skins? Or could the Grandmaster Ash have ended up working an average job somewhere? GA: Grandmaster Ash will never ever have a proper job, because Grandmaster Ash has never had a proper job! He’s unemployable outside the music scene. Seriously, just the amount of tattoos that I’ve got and the violent streak I have whereby I hit things with sticks for a living. Drums not people, obviously. It’s a way of life, playing the drums for me it’s not just about earning a living, it’s about a passion, it’s an art form. The entertainer and the travelling showman vibe keeps me going.

MFM: Which single gig, or recording session, or concert was it that really made you stop and think ‘Wow, this is a beautiful job’? GA: I was fourteen years of age, and I played with a guy called Edwin Star at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. There were about fifteen-thousand people there. I was a kid in front of all of them, and I remember thinking; ‘This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.’ From then on I played with loads of different orchestras and bands, and I went to every audition I heard about. Sometimes I even lied about my age basically to get on a tour. And I’ve never looked back.

MFM: Drumming is an extremely physical musical practice. Has that hampered your career in the form of repetitive strain injuries or pulled muscles? GA: No, I’ve been lucky with that. The key to avoiding injury is to have good technique, and I’ve had lessons from a legendary drum instructor called Jim

Chapin from New York, and he taught me about the Moeller technique. And when I was starting off all of my teachers made sure to teach me proper technique and posture.

MFM: No matter what style you’re playing or teaching, after enough hours it starts to knock on the skull. What do you do to unplug and wind down? GA: I don’t, really. I stay on it. It’s just a constant pursuit. If I’m awake I’m doing music. That’s what I love; it’s what I live for. Sleep is a waste of time to be honest with you. I honestly feel that way, there’s just a natural energy that keeps me going. MFM: Let’s say there’s a kid somewhere out there reading this who was never encouraged to get into music but always thought he would enjoy and be good at practising percussion. What would you want that kid to know or to do tomorrow morning? GA: Buy a pair of drum sticks. A lot of parents think that getting their kids into music and in particular drums is an inevitably expensive and very noisy process. The truth is not many percussionists have drum kits at home. I don’t; they’re all at the school or the studio. If you want to start, all you need is a pair of sticks, and that’s not expensive. From there you can learn on your teacher’s kit, or improvise using things around the house. At home I play on a practice pad. It makes no noise at all and allows me to feel a rhythm and give my arms a workout.

The Knight Has New Armour Article by Ed Resek. All photographs by Jimmy de Paris. On the evening of the 22nd of October, Mayfair Fashion Magazine was invited to Argyll Street for the re-opening of Mo*vida, the multi-award winning members club. Three years after it opened Mo*vidaʼs directors, believing the place needed a breath of fresh air, invited the clubʼs original designer back to revamp it. Cannes based designer Samy Chams is widely regarded as the industryʼs go-to-guy when a new club needs an interior. Venues that can also boast his magic touch include Maddox in London, Baoli in Cannes, and the VIP Room clubs in St. Tropez and Luxembourg. In classic Samy Chams style, the new Mo*vida is a world of vibrant pink, sky blue and electric green mood lighting and decoration. All the old furniture has been replaced by funky modern square-patch pattern sofas, giving the club a uniformly clean and cool look. The raised VIP areas now boast underfloor lighting in a modern interpretation of the flashing disco floors of the seventies. The infamous Mo*vida mirrors have also received an upgrade and now run the entire length of the clubʼs main room. Another welcome addition to the born again party haven is the installation of a second bar within the main room. If you didnʼt know that La Cuvée Dom Perignon and Mo*vida were as tight as twins you certainly will now with clear glass panels emblazoned with Dom P. Logo sectioning VIP booths. What was previously just a dining area within the main club has now been renamed and re-branded as Mo*ods; a stunning lounge bar to warm up the evening before the party really gets started, open Monday to Sunday until 4a.m. The hallowed VIP room (the well-known but to most people never-seen room, where Enrique Iglesias hosted his after-concert party last year) has also received due care and attention. Its bar has been entirely rebuilt, and the room fitted with ʻergo-organicʼ seating. If ever there was a good way to spend two-and-a-half million pounds, this refurb was it. The benchmark just got the proverbial two barrels. Itʼs not only the interior that has completely changed, but Mo*vidaʼs game plan is also set to take a turn. The club are planning to incorporate live music attractions into their weekly schedules.

More Mo*vida Madness’ 2008 has seen London host some of the most outrageous parties in years, including Elton Johnʼs no-holds-barred fundraiser for his AIDS foundation, the Quantum of Solace million-pound afterparty at Battersea Power Station, and back in May the afterparty for the Sex And The City movie at Old Billingsgate. In spite of all those festivities it seems that the Mo*vida relaunch party was something altogether stellar, and some sources are saying that total sales (90% of it being bottles of Dom Perignon and Cristal Champagne) on the night were not far off a million pounds. Everybody who is anybody came out of the woodwork to celebrate the rebirth of the place where theyʼve all been caught misbehaving and overindulging. The Middle Eastern businessmen and oil barons, the Russian oligarchs, and the European stock-market nouveau-riches. Celebrity guests included (very deep breath...) Paris Hilton, brit-rapper Dizzee Rascal, Princess Eugenie, up and coming girl band Hope, drummer Gary Powell, eccentric socialite Henry Conway, former glamour model Katie Price, X-Factorʼs boyband Avenue and choreographer Brian Friedman, ex-Blue singer Anthony Costa, successful singer Lemar, and oddball-about-town Jodie Harsh.

JAMES SUTTON James Sutton established his status as an actor by portraying the role of John Paul in TV soap Hollyoaks. Having departed after playing a major role in a dramatic storyline about a family abduction, James has certainly left Hollyoaks leaving a great impression both on and off screen.

Mayfair Fashion Magazine: Hi James. Thanks for the shoot. What do you think of the magazine? James Sutton: I think it’s a great concept, there’s definitely a gap in the market for a new magazine that’s not only informative but also covers fashion, music etc.

James was born and raised just outside Birmingham and his family still live in the area. His real surname is actually Cook but chose the stage name Sutton, which comes from the area he grew up in; Sutton Coldfield. James attended university in Cardiff to build on his acting credentials and landed the role as John Paul shortly after completing his degree.

MFM: You’ve recently left Hollyoaks, haven’t you? JS: Yes, I left last month after two years which was a bit daunting. I have loved working on Hollyoaks and owe the show and producers so much but I am really excited about the prospect of playing a different character. The script writers gave me a great storyline exit, which I was really pleased with.

James remains proud to have been a part of Hollyoaks, which in recent times has grown and developed enormously, captivating a much wider audience than most other TV soaps. Hollyoaks has won many awards for its accomplishments with James himself scoring runner up behind David Tennant for best actor at this year’s National Television Awards. James now wants to get himself involved with new acting projects in the near future.

MFM: How did you get your role on Hollyoaks? JS: I studied Acting at the Royal Welsh College in Cardiff for 3 years and managed to get a London agent. I was very lucky really. I got my first acting job the day I graduated and have not really stopped since. I find it difficult to hold down a normal job, maybe that’s why I like acting…

After an exclusive Photo Shoot for Mayfair Fashion Magazine, James has time to talk briefly about his time on Hollyoaks, his plans for the near future, and what he gets up to in his spare time.

mayfairfashion

MFM: What sort of work are you planning for the near future? JS: Well I would love to get involved in a serial drama and that is the sort of direction I would like to see my acting path go down. I have just recently filmed a short role in Casualty. MFM: Do you watch any reality TV programmes? Would you see yourself in any of them soon? JS: No, as simple as that. Programmes like Big Brother, especially the recent series, show exactly what is wrong with modern society. With more programmes like that being aired these days, it certainly limits the opportunity for serial dramas. MFM: Point taken! Well James what do you get up to in your spare time? JS: I am a huge Liverpool football supporter! I attend all the home games with my girlfriend’s mum and have a big passion for football. MFM: James, thanks again for all your time. JS: My pleasure.

AHEAD

LOOKING

Still living in the past? Have you come to a crossroads in life? Too shy or embarrassed to ask a friend for advice? There are ways of making life easier for ourselves. The amount of times we've heard "Think Positive", well, we cannot think positively without feeling positive from within, so let's get down to basics. Whether it be love, money, relationships, work etc. we have to understand that past experiences have brought us to our present day situations. Bear I mind that the past can never be changed. As the Paradoctor, I have learnt that there are certain stages that we go through mentally and physically to emit a positive energy. If we live by a few personal basic rules we can find ourselves on the correct path in life to fulfil our destiny, gain more love and respect.

NEXT I EXCLUSIVE C FEMALE PHO EXCLUSIVE C MALE PHOT

EXCLUSIVE 'HER FIRST PH CELEBRITY IN JOHN GOUGH'S SH SO MUCH M

The first rule being, "Learn to love yourself." Take a long, hard look at yourself in the mirror; don't be shy to analyze your features. How many times have you made mental comments about the looks of others? Well, do the same to yourself. Make a wish list of certain parts of your face you would like to improve. Do this for a few minutes, then have a cup of tea and on your return to the mirror, again analyze your face but this time compliment yourself on the parts you find attractive and flattering. You will start liking yourself more than before. Because you have raised your own awareness, you will see yourself in a different light; as will others. My next rule is, learn how to use one of the shortest words in the English language which possibly has the biggest meaning. NO! God only knows how many times we've all said, "Yes." when we've wanted to say, "No." We could have avoided being in situations we never wanted to get into in the first place. Always remember saying NO is not necessarily rude or impolite. My final rule is simple, straight forward and to the point. BE RUTHLESS! Never let people use you unless you're doing someone a favour. Stop worrying about what others may think of you; let them worry about what you may think of them. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself and stay focused on your goal.

THINK POSITIVE. By emitting positive energy, we attract positive energy ! www.paradoctor.co.uk
