With three beachside resorts, Butlins welcomes over 1.5 million guests per year. They had a mission to innovate and improve their facilities, environments, and service with the aim of delighting their customers with a more modern and attractive holiday destination. We have been working in partnership with Butlins for over 30 years to improve their resorts and on this occasion, we were tasked with helping them achieve their mission at their Bognor Regis resort. We refurbished 36 two and three-bedroom apartments including electrical work, plastering, kitchen and bathroom replacements, flooring, and redecoration. We also constructed a steel framed extension for a new reception area that involved electrical and mechanical work, steelwork and cladding, double glazed aluminium curtain walling and doors and single-ply roof covering.

INNOVATIONS

During the work, there were multiple additions and omissions to the original specification. We worked closely with the client to suggest alternative materials so that the cost of multiple additions could be offset by savings in the specification. By suggesting alternative materials, making changes to the programme and other cost saving initiatives, we saved the client £150,000 against our original tendered price.

SOLUTION

Before the project started, a full working programme was produced in collaboration with our sub-contractors and suppliers. When creating the programme, we found that the volume of bespoke furniture on order was too much for one supplier to cope with so we decided to work with multiple suppliers so that the deadline could be met. All works had to be completed within a twelve week programme so as not to affect revenue in the Easter holiday period. To meet the timescale, we had 80-90 tradesmen working on site at any one time.

THE RESULTS

The client was extremely satisfied with the work as even with delays and changes to the specification, we were still able to complete all works within the original twelve week programme. The client was also delighted that we supported their commitment to re-invest in the local by community by using local suppliers on the project. We liaised with Arun District Council to find out approved suppliers which we could use on the project. We produced a document for both the Council and Butlins once works were completed to show what suppliers we used, as well as value of the work and services allocated to them.
