CASE STUDY EDUCATION THE RUGBY SCHOOL

CLC was invited to tender as a national contractor, with an emphasis on being able to supply the appropriate resources, management, and supervision to deliver this sensitive project on time and within budget. It was successfully handed over by CLC’s Project Manager, who made the entire summer process an easy undertaking, for which I am grateful. Thank you, CLC.

Rugby School in Warwickshire is one of the oldest independent schools in Britain and was originally founded as a free grammar school. The School House’s last refurbishment was 30 years ago, so the dormitories were in need of an upgrade. CLC was tasked with providing a robust, practical, and contemporary refurbishment solution, with the work scheduled to be completed during the summer break. This gave our team eight weeks to complete the project.
INNOVATIONS
One of the biggest challenges of the project was scheduling work around school events. The school requested that no skips or signs of construction be visible during these events. On event days, we collaborated with the client to remove skips and compound fencing and carried out a thorough clean throughout the site. To accommodate the programme, we increased the number of operatives on site and closely managed the work to enhance efficiency on the project.
SOLUTION
Given the security requirements in an academic environment, before work commenced, our operatives were briefed on all agreed security protocols, and each CLC operative was issued a contractor pass for the duration of the contract. We also implemented a mandatory signing-in process and clearly signposted the active working areas, assigning each area a dedicated point of contact.
Over the eight weeks, our team of directly employed operatives removed the old bedroom furniture and washrooms in four dormitory rooms, replacing them with new, modern, yet durable furniture and fittings including 24 new beds. We also completed electrical works which included installing 20 new LED light fittings to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs in the dormitories providing both ambient lighting and additional sleek study lighting integrated into the dormitory furniture. Our Site Manager monitored quality, health and safety, and adherence to the programme through daily site inspections.
THE RESULTS
The project was successfully completed within the eight-week deadline, giving Rugby School a brand-new, refreshed look for students to return to. The dormitories and washrooms are now welcoming spaces, with new furniture and study areas supporting the students living there.
