What the hell is FMF?
Welcome to the FMF experience... one of the biggest independent music events in the country, right here in your own backyard. It’s also one of the biggest parties in Orlando. Celebrating it’s 14th year,(technically the 13th year, but this whole 13th FMF2014 thing got confusing, so we skipped the 13th like a rock and roll elevator) the Florida Music Festival is a 3 day (predominantly) unsigned artist showcase, in which more than 175 artists from around the country come to Orlando to play a 30 minute power packed showcase for the attending music industry and more importantly, the fans on 10 stages all within walking distance downtown. Some bands hope to sign with a major, others will go indie and still others are doing it themselves and just want your support. Some bands will rock you hard, others will throw down some hip-hop. But whether it’s punk, indie, metal, pop or whatever the heck you call half of the bands, it’s a blast. Each night there will also be headliners at all the major venues, with LESS THAN JAKE, ED KOWALCZYK, AER, ROADKILL GHOST CHOIR, STOKESWOOD, HOYLE and more performing on their respective nights.
www.FLORIDAMUSICFESTIVAL.com for info on line up, tickets and more! SCAN HERE FOR SCHEDULE:
Rule 3 DON’T GO FMF-ING UNPREPARED! Some of the best out of town and up-and-coming bands you might not know are worth checking out! The online schedule has the artists’ profiles linked so you can check out the bands before heading downtown. The schedule link is available on FloridaMusicFestival.com.
Rule 4 VARIETY AND VOLUME ARE KEY! So many bands, so many venues, how do I get a ticket or pass? (One wristband gets you into all 15 clubs for one night... the biggest rock and roll club crawl)! You can go to any participating venue in the Downtown area and pay at the door for a wristband for that night. You can then get into that venue and every other venue that is part of FMF2014 for that night only. Or you can purchase in advance at TICKETFLY.com and pick up at Wall St Plaza WILL CALL at the corner of Court & Central by the Mainstage. Example: You can buy an Official Wristband at Backbooth to start the night. Go in, have a beer, check out a band. Then you can walk over to The Social and see a band, then walk over to Magnolia, then go over to Wall St Plaza to check out a band. The music world is yours!

MODERN ALT ROCK
ED KOWALYCZYK
11:30 - WALL ST PLAZA In mid-2008, Ed Kowalczyk found himself in an unfamiliar situation. As the singer and songwriting force behind the multi-platinum rock band Live, Kowalczyk had been playing music professionally for nearly two decades. But for the first time in his life, Kowalczyk felt no urgency to write songs or have anything to do with music for that matter. “I was in a malaise about the whole thing,” Kowalczyk says. “I felt like I had done everything I wanted to do and wasn’t sure if I wanted to re-engage.” A contemplative person by nature, Kowalczyk turned inward for a period of soulsearching. “Then, out of nowhere, I got this incredible inspiration to do it again in this new way,” he says. “I realized that one of the limitations I was experiencing was the fact that I’d been doing it the same way for so long that I wondered what would happen if I challenged myself and tried things differently. From then on, it was like uncorking a bottle that had been shaken and it exploded into this writing fervor.” Three solo albums later, Ed is still on the road and performing music from every phase in his colorful career.

BURNSY'S 10 SIMPLE STEPS to enjoying your first
L A IV T S E F IC S U M A FLORID
Ebelieve very year since the very first Florida Music Festival – I that was in 1872, if memory serves correctly –
thousands of people send me emails, letters and raunchy postcards asking, among other filthier things, what they can do to make sure that their first FMF experience is what the teenagers in the science club I volunteer with call a hella dope bomb ass experience. And the answer, friends, is rather complex. For starters, you can’t just step right into my insanely awesome lifestyle and expect to run with the big Chihuahuas. It takes many years and a liver the size of Tropicana Field to step up to my level. Also, you need to be ready for spontaneous dance battles to break out when rival gangs appear out of nowhere. After all, is there’s one thing that Orlando is well known for, it’s people who handle problems without violence. But this isn’t to say that you can’t start learning how to have fun like me and my awesome homeless friends, and that’s what I’m here for – to teach you things that will help you avoid being an adult. Today’s first lesson: Popping your FMF cherry and enjoying every last minute of it
Step 1: Be familiar with the headlining acts. Let’s face it – if you show up to FMF and you have no clue who the headlining acts are, you’re already screwing yourself out of a good time. This year’s headlining bands aren’t completely new to FMF either, as Filter has played the main stage before. By the holy law of the rock gods, they are required to make women’s pants fall off this year. The Dirty Heads and Candlebox, though, are as new to FMF as you are, so they, like you, are obligated to bring their Agame as well. And if anyone is caught slacking, it’s off to a Bieber concert. Step 2: Embrace the locals. Over the years, I’ve made some great new friends thanks to FMF and I’ve watched those bands go on to great things. The problem is that right now I can’t remember any of them, so I will just assume they are Pearl Jam, Green Day, U2, Adele and the Spice Girls (they loved being naked with me) and not bother going back to check if that’s true or not.
Step 5: Study up ahead of time. The entire schedule for FMF is available at FloridaMusicFestival. com. Go check it out and then go to that YouTube site all the kids are talking about over their pog matches and search for some of the bands. Learn about them, embrace their music and look like an expert by fist-pumping and singing along. They’ll thank you for it.
Step 6: Don’t fist pump. Sorry, just realized that I endorsed fist-pumping, and I have punished myself with the required Bieber music. Step 7: Treat all ladies with respect. This Spread your wings and check out the bands that play the earlier time slots at the bars off the beaten path. After all, those are the places that Taylor Swift played at just a few years ago, and she grew up and wrote two albums about how I broke her heart. After she became legal, of course.
Step 3: Check out my friends specifically. If you need a primer on bands to go check out, you can’t go wrong with some of Central Florida’s veteran shredders. Off the top of my head, the following acts are worth your time: The Supervillains (an absolute inexcusable must-see for all rookies), Dub-T, The Passenger, The Lighter Exchange and Big 10-4, but only if they wear the mesh shirts that I designed for them. That’s a deal breaker.
Wall Street Plaza
BEEMO plays on Stage II at 8 P.M. facebook.com/mynameisbeemo beemo.virb.com
Step 8: Show your appreciation to girls who are boosted up on someone’s shoulders so they can lift their shirts by shouting, “WOO!” or “HELL YEAH!” Girls like that kind of respect.
Step 9: Support your local musicians
by purchasing their CDs and t-shirts. After all, when a band goes on to be the next big thing, that album will become a collector’s item. Just like the Nirvana tape I purchased in 1993.
Step 4: Pick 5 other bands at random and Step 10: Make sure to behave yourself and vow to go see them. That’s what I do, and that’s how I discovered my favorite FMF bands of years past, including Prince and the New Power Generation, the Divinyls, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay.

Roadkill Ghost Choir
How do you think you’ll be received in your hometown having made so much noise nationally as of late? Andrew Shepard: Not sure. I imagine it’ll be a good time. We’re excited to be back playing in Orlando. It feels like we’ve been away for a long time. With major media acknowledgement, such as ‘Letterman’, and some major fests like Bonaroo and Lollapalooza lined up, are you starting to feel the momentum on the road, seeing it at the shows? A: Yeah, our tours aren’t as completely bleak as they once were. It’s been awhile since we’ve played to just the bartender so we appreciate that. You recently won the Red Bull Thre3style competition, what do you think propelled your set over the competition in the eyes and ears of the judges and the audience? A: Yes. Well I think it had a great deal to do with just being able to stay focused on what the rules and judges criteria were consistently throughout my set all while showcasing my technical abilities, creative mixing, stage presence, rocking the crowd and taking risks. How has the experience been spending months at a time in a van and hotels with 5 of your best friends?! Any great war stories so far? A: We all hate each other. Lots of bad blood. Actually, it’s all pretty boring. Lots of sleeping and staring out of a window. The Roadkill sound has some dire twists and turns, fitting of a Cormac McCarthy novel. What helped to influence this sound, and storytelling? A: Cormac McCarthy is actually a big influence for my writing. He’s completely brutal. Musical influences, to name a few, are Radiohead, anything Gram Parson’s related, The Boss, Dylan, Wilco, Boards of Canada and Kurt Vile. Lately, we’ve been listening to the new The War On Drugs, Sun Kil Moon and Angel Olsen records. They’re pretty great. People may say ‘sunny Orlando, land of Mickey Mouse,’ but every city has it’s surrounding rural areas, with a soundtrack to match. How was it growing up in Deland, and what local bands and bars helped mold you as a musician? A: Deland is a nice, quiet town. I never really got involved in the music scene around here other than performing at a few open mics in my early days of music. Those were important experiences for me as a performer just starting out. No one likes this question, but rather than ask you to label the band and new album, how about if an alien landed in front of the band van, and asked how you guys would describe Roadkill Ghost Choir? A: It sounds like a box of triscuits. Everyone loves delicious triscuit crackers. Others have described it as spacey, folky, rock music. Aliens don’t like space music because they’ve heard it all. Anything specific you are looking forward to coming back home next month for a quick breather before hitting the road all summer? A: Sleeping in my bed and watching HBOGo and Netflix. I’ll probably get around to writing some new songs I’ve been tinkering with. I live a simple, pathetic life.

your music, as you’re becoming a favorite from generation to generation?
Japan. Japan is pretty amazing.
hris: It’s awesome, and we see it at the shows. We see the parents with the kids now. We’ve been forced to make onesies for infants now, because so many of our fans are having kids. It’s awesome because we’re now spanning generations.
playing every date. Correct me if I’m wrong, but are you guys still the only band that has played the Warped Tour in every decade?
a band, you should do a little bit of research. Typically, people try to ask questions that are outside of the box, which is nice, because when you do interviews, you don’t want to be asked the same thing all the time.
band. We’ve definitely put our time in. The first time was ’97, then it was ’98, ’99, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2011 and now 2014.
Xis: With your own label, touring, writing and recording music, and not to mention being active on social media, how much of your time in any given day is devoted to the band and the music?
We were invited to the backstage Grammy after-party when we were in Hollywood when we were with Capitol Records and Warner Bros. We’d be looking around and there’d be this “star” and we just took it all in and laughed at it, because that’s not really reality. We’ve always been able to poke fun at ourselves and others and just have fun with the whole thing.
days with technology. We all put our time in.
the video for “My Money is on the Long Shot.” How long did it take to put that video together and how much fun was it? Were there any contributions that you had to leave out?
the same reason that we did 22 years ago – we love to play live shows. Be it at a bar with 150 people or a festival with 15,000 people, it’s all the same to us. We’ve never really measured ourselves as part of the industry or by what our peers are doing, because we’ve seen every trend come and go in 22 years.
AXis: What is it like to know that you have Chris: Anywhere that people fans that have grown up with your band show up to watch us play and now they’ve got kids that are listening to is exciting, but I would have to say C
AXis: What kind of differences have you S oon enough, I was staring at Chris noticed in your fans over the years? Like, and Roger, and I’m not even sure what’s the difference between the kids at the
I remembered my name at that point. It’s a pretty terrifying thing to meet your favorite band in person when you’re just some punk kid, and that’s why I ended up walking away in sheer horror. Fast forward to this month, and Less Than Jake is once again taking the main stage at Wall Street Plaza for the 2014 Florida Music Festival, more than 22 years after the Gainesville band would embark on a journey that would make them legends of the punk-ska genre. I got a second chance to ask Chris DeMakes some questions about this band that has remained a favorite of mine and so many other people for so long.
E Xis: I actually kind of interviewed you for A my high school paper 17 years ago at the Warped Tour in West Palm, but I was so xcept this time, I was slightly less terrified.
intimidated and nervous that I think I asked one question and just kind of wandered off. So I want to start by asking you the one question that I remember that I wanted to ask you back then: What’s it like to be in the most awesome band in the world?
C
hris DeMakes: Well, I really appreciate that. It’s been 22 years and we’re still privileged to play for people and it’s just awesome.
AXis: 20+ years and counting is amazing for anyone in any career, let alone some guys in
a band. What keeps the tank full and the engine running in your creative desire to keep playing and recording?
Chris: They ask that and they ask what the band’s name means, and I just tell them to AXis: Aside from FMF, Less Than Jake is also look at Wikipedia. If you’re going to interview returning to the Warped Tour this year, Chris: I believe so, and I think we’ve played the Warped Tour more than any other
A
AXis: You’ve said in the past that you guys are able to keep going because you keep Chris: I don’t think there’s a huge Chris: When we’re off tour, each of us things fun. Not to make it sound like I’m asking for difference. I think kids are kids; they probably put in a few hours a day. We’re the keys to a good marriage, but how do you keep want to have a good time. I think for us, or talking to each other online, or writing back things fun without falling into the same routine? me in particular, I can hang out with them as a to every person on Facebook and Twitter, 40-year old, because I can still relate to them, we’re trying to keep people informed. because I was a kid not too long ago. Maybe in hris: Ultimately, I think that we don’t take That’s kind of the way you have to do it these Courselves or the whole thing seriously. because the 90s they wore baggier shirts and pants, but 1996 Warped Tour and the 2013 Warped Tour?
that’s about it.
AXis: I’m sure people ask you all the time about the crazy moments on the road, and
there are probably too many to even think about by this point, but have the crazy moments and especially the crazy people subsided as the band has gotten older?
AXis: After all this time, with the way that the music industry has changed from CDs
turning into MP3s and the rise and fall of so many of your peers, have the various pressures ever gotten to you guys and made you think about calling it quits?
Chris: Calling it quits, no. Sure, there are Chris: Absolutely not. We’re out in AXis: You guys have made a ton of friends pressures and stress, but ultimately, again, different cities every day and we see the along the way and inspired a lot of bands we’re still having fun. We’re still going out for same set of characters. All our band and crew, and musicians, and that was really on display in we’re in a different set of circumstances each day, so you never know what you’re going to see. That’s still part of the fun and the ride. It keeps it interesting. As far as a particular story, I just don’t have one. You never know, one day someone could be banging on your bus incessantly and you open the door to some 45-year old with a ham and full dinner spread for the band, because his kid loves the band so much that he wanted to bring dinner for you. Things like that just happen out of nowhere.
AXis: As you guys continue to play all over the country and the world, is there still a
sense of homecoming, like “Man, this is where it all started,” when you play in Florida or is it just kind of business as usual?
Chris: No, you can feel the energy. Florida is super special. This is where we cut
our teeth, and when we play here, you can definitely feel it. It’s different than other places.
Chris: It didn’t take too long. It took about three weeks to get everybody’s
submissions, and a friend of ours took about a week-and-a-half to edit it. All told, it was about a month or five weeks, and it was awesome. The outtake reels are way longer than the three minutes that were shown. There was some nudity and a few things that were too much to include, but for the most part, everyone was included.
AXis: One of the things that I was really nervous about then and even now was
asking you the same old, same old. What’s a question that people always ask you? My guess is “What’s up with Jen?”
A
Xis: I’ll close with one of the two or three questions that I think I asked you the first time I met you. What kind of advice would you offer to a kid looking to start a band right now?
Chris: Find the right guys who have the same ambition as you, and get out
on the road and go door-to-door like a salesman. You know, we all have the Internet and social media, but if you believe in it, take your act door-to-door and don’t stop until you achieve whatever it is that you want to achieve.
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT THURSDAY. APRIL24th .WALL ST PLAZA Just a duo out of Boston, David von Mering and Carter Schultz are a breath of fresh air for the hip hop party movement, creating a sound remiscent of Sugar Ray burning some of Marley’s medicinal. Having toured their way across the country on their own mixtapes and indie releases, landing on the Itunes Hip Hop charts with “What You Need.” Their most recent full length, popped the Spring Break anthem “Says She Loves Me” and a soldout theatre tour, with a stop at the Florida Music Festival to headline opening night on the Wall St Plaza Mainstage. So, you guys are riding high on the hit track “She Says She Loves Me.” How many drunk ladies told you they loved you on this most recent tour? Dave: Only my mom did so yeah. For a couple guys out of chilly Boston, you seem to make music that sounds more like you’ve been chilling on an island all your lives, where does this mellow originate? Dave: I’m not sure. I guess it’s cause that’s the music we like to listen to, but I have no idea why. Your shows have become a full blown party for the packed houses, what’s the best time you guys have had on the stage so far, what are some of the highlights? Dave: I liked the s/o Fillmore show in DC that was fun. I just enjoyed our set in general on this tour because it had such a great plot line. My favorite was probably Albuquerque, NM. It was one of the smaller shows but it was so intimate and full of fans that really had been listening to us for a while and knew ever word. OK, how about some highlights off the stage? Dave: We we’re in Santa Cruz, and there’s a part in the set during “She’ll Miss It” where I always get on the floor to start air humping, and some girl just got on top of me. She ended up straddling me for only about 2 seconds before our tour manager scooped her up and threw her back into the crowd. Usually they don’t make it past the barricade so that was impressive. Beantown has spawned major acts in just about every music genre, anyone specific you guys looked up to growing up in the scene? Dave: I love that Dropkick Murphy’s song, and I obviously witnessed the birth of Sammy Adams. I respect both of those artists for making the moves they did. I would love to be one of the next to pop out. You’ve performed with everyone from Macklemore to Slightly Stoopid to A$ap Rocky. If you had to define the Aer genre, what would it be? Dave: I’d say we’ve been known to create a “feel good” sound, and that there are a lot of influences that we pull from. I just kind of throw a bunch of sounds together and see what works.
What would your ideal tour be, who would open, who would headline, and who would intro the show? Dave: It would have Chris Delia intro the show with some stand up, Aer, and then Red Hot Chili Peppers How sweet was it seeing the Sox dominate for their 3rd title in the past decade, any great memories of the championship season (sorry mag and fest producer is a Sox fan!)? Dave: Ya that was the best. I remember my friend was at the game sending me pictures of people climbing on telephone poles outside Fenway yelling and screaming fans everywhere. I heard some car flipping was involved. We are looking forward to seeing you guys in Orlando, any Otown memories, or anyone you want to give a shout out before you hit town? Dave: We did our first real mini tour in Florida so I’ll never forget that. Classic! Can’t wait to be back.
THURSDAY. APRIL 24th .WALL ST PLAZA
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT somewhat maximized or multiplied in efficiency by the extra hands on the project. Now that I’m on the other side of that experience let’s just say that I am now yet another person who can attest to how underwhelming the record industry can be in the area of efficiency. Out of the dozens of different projects we’ve release, both as SoS and otherwise the Anti/Epitaph releases only made up two of those. It’s all been a great learning experience that has only reinforced what we have always known, that we can go nowhere if we aren’t moving together with the people. And as we have always been self reliant our focus these days is to continue expanding the idea of “ourselves” to include our fans. We are for the culture and for the people. The more the people recognize how great our success extends to them personally the more we can all help each other move forward with real power. Having toured behind the Anti release, any advice for those working towards that goal of ‘getting signed’ and hitting the road? Divinci: You can hit the road now.. Getting signed is not a prerequisite to anything you hope to accomplish. If getting signed is really something you want to do, any groundwork you lay by yourself will only make you more compelling to a label. Be self-sufficient and work with the idea that you yourself are the one(s) that hold the keys to your “success” (however you define that).
We’re looking forward to having SoS on the Mainstage on Opening Night at the 14th Annual Florida Music Festival. Swam and different members may have played a part in the past, but this is the first official appearance. You guys have played an integral part in not just the music scene, but the overall Orlando culture over the past decade. Any aspects of Otown’s culture stand out as significant from your perspective over that time? Divinci: There are a good amount of cities you go to where its cultural history is thick in the air. Places where you can look around at the buildings and cultural monuments and almost see the big events that happened there decades ago. It’s inspiring. it creates a sense of purpose and a standard to live up to when walking the same streets as the greats did before you. Because of its transient nature, among other reasons, Orlando isn’t one of these cities... yet. There has always been a super talented group of people here in Orlando but for years it’s lacked the built-in support system that would help it to be or be recognized as a thriving cultural mecca. But what it’s lacked as a whole has more than been made up for by it’s parts. The people make Orlando such a great place to be and they are the reason why we and the people that know what’s up have stayed. And it’s the people that have stayed that have chose to cultivate the seeds of an ideal cultural place. Give it some time and you will start to see the fruits of this labor deliver an abundant harvest. It’s already started. And outsiders are starting to take notice. You’ve released a half dozen full lengths, in every different capacity. How is the independent release experience as opposed to the Anti/Epitaph label release process? Divinci: We’ve always taken on the majority of the workload when releasing a project whether by ourselves or under another label. So on our end the experience hasn’t changed much. But when you are on a major independent like Anti-/Epitaph you do expect that the work you put in will be
Your hometown crowds are as strong as ever, how has that momentum built since the release of ‘The 4th Wall’? Divinci: The 4th Wall Double Album is the final piece of an elaborate puzzle we’ve been crafting for the greater part of a decade called The Listener’s Trilogy. It’s been a huge endeavor both logistically and creatively. Now that it’s all out there for people to experience, it’s like the blueprints for our plans are in everybody’s hands or at least available to them. We can now move forward side by side with the people and are freed up to create and interact with our fans even more. What greater place to (re)start than our hometown. What are the short term goals for SoS in 2014? Divinci: We started a side project called The Afterlife by ATDS and are releasing a new album every 4 months in addition to working on new material by Solillaquists of Sound. There is already a preview of the first level of the Afterlife up on the site (http://atds.bandcamp.com) and we will be releasing the full version of level 1 this month. But we are still very much about getting “The 4th Wall” in to the hands of our fans, it’s absolutely essential to OUR story and what we do from here on out. Like I said everything from now on is about moving together. And together we are moving forward quickly. Lots of things are in development so we are doing our best to make sure we are connected with everyone as the plans unfold. Anything special you guys have planned for FMF and the Fest stage for the Orlando faithful? Divinci: For the last couple years we’ve been working on The 4th Wall and touring pretty much exclusively in Europe. Our last 8 consecutive tours have been in France. But since the release of the double album we’ve really been focusing again on our hometown connections with family and fans. A big part of that is our hometown events. We’ve already performed more this year in Orlando than we have total in the last couple of years combined. What we’ve found is that our connection is still there and we are using that to fuel our forward momentum..That’s why every time you see us out you can trust that it’s going to be a celebration that runs deep. Last year was the 9th time Orlando voted us best hip hop act and every show this year is going to serve as a personal thank you to the city that has supported us all these years. That’s why we wanted to be involved with FMF this year. Both SoS and FMF are long-running Orlando institutions trying to highlight the local talent. This year is as good as any to link up. Bring your love and hometown pride and plan to celebrate.
