A Brief History of Jamaica’s most famous export beside’s Marley! Their meeting was simple enough. One morning, two youngsters came upon each other in the offices of West Indies Mineral and Table Water Company in Kingston, Jamaica. “My name is Thomas Hargreaves Geddes,” said the newcomer. The other smiled. “Glad to make your acquaintance! I’ve been here a bit. I’m Eugene Desnoes.” And so, for the first time, Desnoes and Geddes shook hands. Neither of them could have imagined that this would mark the beginning of an extraordinary partnership. A partnership that has given the world Red Stripe Lager, The Great Jamaican Beer. In 1927 Desnoes and Geddes announced the opening of the Surrey Brewery on Pechon Street in the heart of downtown Kingston. The first Red Stripe Beer-more like an ale, heavy and dark-was brewed a year later. The birth of Red Stripe would later be considered a milestone in Jamaican history. When the island gained independence from Britain in 1962, a columnist for The Daily Gleaner wrote “the real date of independence should have been 1928, when we established our self respect and self confidence through the production of a beer far beyond the capacity of mere Colonial dependants.” The light, golden Red Stripe of today was first brewed in 1934, the creation of Paul Geddes (later Jamaica’s first brewmaster) and Bill Martindale. The old Surrey Brewery on Pechon Street was phased out in 1958 when the ultra-modern plant at Hunt’s Bay went into operation. This was the most modern brewery in the Caribbean.
SATURDAY, JUNE 16th • 5PM-9PM WALL ST. PLAZA • DOWNTOWN ORLANDO Facts You should know about the Tropical Elixir! • Rum is considered to be the world’s oldest distilled spirit. •“Rum and Bible” ships carried alcohol and missionaries to the New World as part of Triangular Trade. • The colonists in America consumed 12 million gallons of rum per year - almost 4 gallons per capita.

SCENE: #2018FMF • May 10-12th, 2018
Congratulations to the FMF2018 Blue Man Group Drum Off Champ Jacobi Gunter aXis: How would you compare the vibe in your scene in South Carolina to the vibe in Orlando and at FMF? Jacobi: The vibe in Columbia is not much different than Orlando. We have music festival concerts regularly. The festivals are exactly the same: we have different stages with a variety of music acts. I think the difference is Columbia is not as big as Orlando, but the vibe is basically the same great music and great people. aXis: Have you ever witnessed Blue Man Group live? Jacobi: I’ve never seen the Blue Man Group live which I’m sure is AMAZING, but I hope to get back to Orlando to see them and maybe I’ll get the opportunity to sit in with them! I’ve seen many clips of them on YouTube and I can only imagine how the show is live. I know it’s amplified 100% more in person I’m excited to one day see them live for the first time and I know it will be an experience that I won’t forget!
The #2018FMF Blue Man Group Drum Off... featured an incredible group of finalists with Devonte Gray, Jacobi Gunter, Miguel Gutierrez, Terrell Johnson & Curtis Lyons Jr. judged by Blue Men cast & Celebrity Guest Will Hunt of Evanescence & Thirst... and the 5th Annual Florida Music Festival Blue Man Group Drum Off winner was... drum solo please... JACOBI GUNTER walked with a sweet Drum Workshop Inc. (DW Drums) kit and more killer prizes! aXis: So how did you first hear about the BMG Drum Off? Jacobi: I heard about the BMG Drum off through a good friend of the family. She messaged me about the competition and I looked over it and decided to try it out, have fun with it, just to see how far I could go. aXis: Have you ever had a chance to play Orlando or FMF before? Jacobi: The contest was my first time I played in Orlando and at FMF. I thoroughly enjoyed all the different types music that surrounded the festival, it was awesome. aXis: If your first appearance in Otown was on the Mainstage at FMF2018… was any stage fright happening? Jacboi: Of course there was—butterflies as well. Whether it’s a small or large platform, I think a little nervousness is always good. The presence of Will Hunt and the Blue Man Group judges sitting right there made it a little overwhelming, but once I started performing things got better. aXis: You were rocking for a drummer that plays with Evanescence in arenas and drummed for Tommy Lee’s band—Word is that you impressed him, any feedback? Jacobi: Wow, for him to be impressed by my playing is a big deal. I mean, you ARE talking about Will Hunt. He is Huge in my book. When I play, I play every performance from the heart and the goal is always give it a 100% effort. I always learned that no matter what you do in life, do it from your heart (meaning give it your very best) because what comes from the heart reaches the heart, so I am super honored that he was impressed by my playing. Words can’t explain how much it meant that Will talked with me after the show and we connected immediately, and that was only because he was so down to earth. aXis: What’s your background, do you have a band you perform with now? Jacobi: I was born into a gifted family of musicians. My grandparents sang gospel music and my mother is a phenomenal guitarist. My very first performance was at 18 months old playing with my grandparents’ gospel group. I went on to perform solo center court for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets for team introductions as well as my own halftime segment. I have performed on albums and DVDs both live and in studio which have earned very prestigious awards. This past year, I released my single called “D.U.I Drumming Under the Influence.” I was also featured in Modern Drummer Magazine and DRUM! Magazine. As of right now, I’m not in a band. I’m more of an independent/freelance artist, but WHEN opportunity knocks, I will accept with gratitude!

aXis: What are your short-term goals as a drummer and musician? Jacobi: Honestly, almost ALL of my short-term goals have been accomplished because I had a list of things I wanted to do from a very young age and now most of those things have been done… aXis: How about long-term goals? Jacobi: I would love to tour with a major artist, do more drum clinics, create even more studio work for different artist than I do now, author a few books, win a Grammy as an independent drummer or with a band, start a business (currently in the making), invest in real estate, continue to teach and inspire more students on drums… Those are in no particular order, whatever comes first I’ll accept! aXis: Do you have a special place for your new DW throne? Where will the DW kit debut live? Jacobi: As of right now the kit is at my rehearsal spot along with others that I have accumulated over the years. Playing that kit is a reminder of what hard work and dedication will get you! So, I’m super thankful for the DW Drum Set and all the Vic Firth and Sabian prizes that came with it. The kit will debut at a gig I have coming up this weekend and be used in a few studio sessions. That drum kit will definitely get hammered!!!
