Simon Green, AKA Bonobo, is an artist very much at the peak of his significant powers. His 2010 album ‘Black Sands’ was the high watermark of his career to date; a masterful record, marrying Green’s inimitable melodic genius to cutting edge electronics, bass and drums. It’s tempting to relate Green’s yearning, emotive aesthetic to his upbringing in rural Hampshire. His move to Brighton is also an influence; his skill at drum programming perhaps harking back to his days DJing and producing in the small, musically fertile town. Under the initial guidance of Tru Thoughts’ Rob Luis and at nights such as Phonic:hoop, Bonobo found an early education in music.

46 LAST COMIC STANDING

who: Foster The People where: Hard Rock LIve when: Sat, Oct 18th • 8:00pm info: HardRockLive.com @HardRockLiveORL So where is the root of those creative sounds that had heads bouncing the past two years? I love exploring music. When I’m writing songs my favourite thing to do is to try and rabbit-trail and go places I’ve never gone to before. Just like exploring a new terrain or a new country or something. You guys spent two years on the road, did that propel or inhibit the writing process? When we stopped touring and I stopped charging forward, I was able to process everything. I was able to feel things. I just had a lot of questions… I was not at ease with myself, even though, in a sense, I was where I’d wanted to be after so many years of trying. A lot of people don’t realize that Foster The People wasn’t the overnight hit, you spent many years struggling in the LA scene before getting a gig writing commercial tracks. The jingles saved my life! When I got hired to do that I was on top. I finally was making a living doing what I loved. Before that it was so bleak; it got so dark in LA. I was 25, been living there for seven years trying to make it, and getting really close to getting signed with different bands and as a solo artist only to have my hopes dashed. “Pumped Up Kicks” found that rare air of “Crazy” or “Hey Ya” as the anthem of that summer, did you expect that response? That song went viral pretty quickly. From the moment I signed to be a full-time composer at Mophonics to the moment the band got signed was nine months. It was just ‘bam bam’. So how do you attack the process of following up such a massive hit? The biggest head trip was knowing that people were going to hear it, which opens up doors for all kinds of fears to come out.What are they going to think? What did they like about the first record? What did they not like? How can I make a record that’s going to turn critics into fans? How can I win over the haters?

aXis: So the response to the new album has been great so far, how does it feel? The reaction to “Selfless” has been really overwhelming. People are really excited. And “Ready and Willing,” to me, is definitely one of the best songs New Found Glory has ever written. It’s one of my favorite songs that we’ve ever had. I feel like people are going to be really psyched. aXis: What was different about recording Resurrection? The difference this time around is writing was way more fun. [We] had sort of got in this safe zone, and that’s what “Selfless” talks about: “breaking a mirror and ignore all my features … see what I can do without safety.” When you get put in a safe place, you never really see what you’re worth: You’re used to it, everything’s cool, you know what’s going to happen, what you’re going to get out of it. I can say that’s sort of what happened to us on our last couple of records.

aXis: You guys haven’t played club dates in a while, should be fun at HOB? The thing about all the shows we’ve been playing is they’re festivals, so we don’t really get lots of time. For right now, we just play “Selfless,” because there are a lot of fans that haven’t seen us play for a really long time. We’ve been playing a lot of our classic, older songs. When the tour comes, we’re going to play a lot of Resurrection. Going into this album, we’ve had the most fun with the dynamic and energy in our songs. That’s what a lot of our fans love, too.

who: Jonnie Morgan Band w/ Rocktown Melodic Dissent / Gnarlstarz/ The Mikes where: House of Blues • @HOBOrlando when: Sat, Nov 1st what: Local Brews & Local Grooves The Ultimate Craft Beer & Music Festival aXis: Talk aabout the songwriting for those newbies that haven’t experienced JMB with a craft in hand? I think I base it mostly on emotions. Sometimes I write metaphorically, or about dreams I have in my head. Sometimes I may write a love song or gain inspiration from a personal experience. I try not to give away too much, but enough that people can still connect with what I meant or was going through. aXis: How did all these UCFers come together? Back in 2009, I went to a bar and I saw this 3-piece band on stage. I didn’t think the band was that great, but they had this amazing bass player playing a six-string bass. I said to my friend that if I ever started a band, I wanted “that guy.” A few months later, I was doing this open mic night thing and this guy approached me about maybe doing some music together sometime. It turns out he was that same six-string bass player from a few months earlier. We spent a lot of time getting together the correct lineup and reached out to people we had met along the way. It took us about six or seven months to put together what it is today. If you haven’t caught JMB or Jonnie rocking solo at a local World of Beer, then enjoy a few pints and tunes at House of Blues ‘Local Brews & Local Grooves’ featuring flavors from Cigar City Brewing, Funky Buddha Brewery, Due South Brewing Co., Sea Dog Brewing Co., Persimmon Hollow, Rock Brothers Brewing and Native Brewing Company. Must be 21andUp obviously. VIP offers early entry and additional brewery swag for an extra hour.

@YELLOWCARD @SMACKINYC @WILLIAMRYANKEY

Yellowcard / where: Hard Rock Live / when: Sat, Oct 25th / info: HardRockLive.com / @HardRockLiveORL

aXis: Still rocking after all these years, what’s the biggest accomplishment of the past decade plus of making music? The most monumental achievement has been the last three years coming back to making music again after so much time off, building a backup, realizing how much opportunity we have and take advantage of it, think positive and move forward. You learn so much from mistakes of evolvement. aXis: What’s changed since the early days of Yellowcard? Pretty much the only thing that stayed the same when we started until now is that we still play guitar and use microphone, that’s about it. Everything else has changed. aXis: Things got a little more interactive since then? We had a website with a message board and that was a cool way to talk to fans and all of the sudden there was Twitter, Facebook and Instagram,” Key concedes, “But I think from the positive side your access to your fans, your ability to communicate with them has increased so much

aXis: So with the digital revolution the music fan can discover and steal simultanously? I probably illegally downloaded two songs in my life, because I literally couldn’t find them anywhere else. I don’t really buy records in the store, I buy everything on iTunes. If somebody gets through our songs on Spotify, they’ll get to our show. And when they get to the show, that’s how we make money these days. aXis: Any specific reason for the break in recording and touring? I was just trying to get grounded and refocused out of this crazy lifestyle. It was a good time for me, I got my mind into the right place. There are a lot of things that stayed constant, but there are a lot of the changes over the years too. We’ve learned a lot about writing music and writing songs. We’ve become better songwriters over the years. aXis: Have you been able to reach out to all the longtime fans? We were off for 3 years when a lot of social media was really exploding and we kind of missed the boat, so we spent a lot of time trying to catch up!

Progressive Minds, Voices & Personalities Creating the Face of UCF Nation

STEPHEN CHRISTIAN MUSICIAN/MISSIONARY | ANBERLIN Title or claim to fame in life? Stephen Christian, currently I am the singer of the band Anberlin. A one-liner or phrase that best describes you? Perpetually planning to take over the world, but first I need some coffee. What qualities or traits do you have that help you do what you do? Creativity, passion, adaptability, and what I lack in intelligence I make up for in determination. A goal you hope to reach in the next few years? To start an entrepreneurial endeavor which I can pour time, energy, and effort into that turns a passion into a professional career. Personally I want to spend more time with my family and make up for lost time being on the road. Fondest memory of UCF? Playing on the UCF Rugby team with my brother Paul (who was my roommate the entire way through); the memories we made together were unforgettable, the scars I still have from those 2 seasons will never fade.

“For me that held true, I knew that I needed to finish my degree and concentrate on developing the band at the same time.” At what point during your UCF career do you think had the most effect on your professional career? Senior year, I believe for most people in college that is the year where they have narrowed their focus and are starting to envision what the next step in their lives are going to be. For me that held true, I knew that I needed to finish my degree and concentrate on developing the band at the same time.

If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? I would want to initiate community based events where people are brought together more frequently; I think my biggest qualm was that though there were 35,000+ people there I felt as if I didn’t know a single one. So because I am in music maybe I would cement my legacy with a great music festival every year, I would call it the ‘At Knight’ and have a lineup that rivals Coachella. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling? I think the guys we hung around with were pretty amazing; Greg Barris (now a comedian in NYC), Dana Stewart (Nurse in Orlando), Joe Ort (Lawyer in Orlando) and Mr. UCF himself Andrew Brown. Onto the music, new and final release, how does that decision come about? We all have new passions in life; for some it was new career ambitions, personal goals, or families, but we all came together and decided it was time to walk away.There was no behind the scenes drama, no fights, no tension, we just knew it was time. We decided on one last record and tour because for us we wanted to break up how we would want our favorite bands to end. If Radiohead were ending I would want a chance to see them live at least one more time and one more final piece of music. How do you approach the recording and artistic process knowing there is a degree of closure involved? It was bittersweet, on one hand you absorb every moment of the studio, making sure to capture every moment mentally because you don’t know if its your last. On the other hand it was exciting to create one last album with people that you have spent half your life with! Anything you guys are looking forward to addressing on the road with the ‘final’ set list, any surprises? For sure surprises; we have all decided that we are going to play the majority of the show with songs from all the records,

not just our latest record.We understand that people have not just recently become fans of the band so we want to make sure that they hear every song they have ever loved so it is a rather long set. You do a lot of projects, missions and work with lesser fortunate, what’s next for you personally and professional? I do want to work with Non-Profits in the future, I worked with one part time while I was at UCF, and even now I have the desire to continue in that realm. Currently I am interested in Feed the Hungry, an incredible organization attempting to ‘feed all those who are hungry’. More information at http://feedthehungry.org

@LTHOMPSONGC @HACKUCF @GOLFCHANNEL

The eight-member UCF team that started as a grassroots effort to educate the community about cyber attacks and how to defend against them was just named the best cyber defense team in the nation. The team placed first in the Raytheon National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition edging out the Rochester InstiStudent | Information Technology tute of Technology, which placed second and the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, which took third. What qualities do you have that help you do what you do? I like learning how things work. I’m always taking stuff apart and seeing how I can re purpose it. This includes both electronics and code. Once you know how to tear something down to its building blocks and get it working, once its patched back together, you fully understand the system itself. This inquisitiveness is what led me to learning so much about computers, and is ultimately the driving force that motivated me to learning the material I used in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.

Lauren Thompson HOST | THE GOLF CHANNEL Title or claim to fame in life? TV personality on Golf Channel who covers one of the most historic games on the globe. I’m smiling even as I say it! A one-liner or phrase that best describes you? I love the quote by Bill Cosby-”I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone”. Wise words that have come in handy a time or two... What qualities or traits do you have that help you do what you do? I’m a pretty peppy chick. Not much gets me down. I have a great family who believes in me, motivation to spare, and a wild imagination. I’m healthy, I’m forgiven and I’m not stopping anytime soon. I believe that attitude has been the most important factor in my 32 years. Be thankful and quit complaining...words to live by.

A goal you hope to reach in the next few years? Get better at security. There is always room for improvement! Fondest memory of UCF? The time spent with friends, and my involvement with the Hack@ UCF club. At what point during your UCF career do you think had the most effect on your professional career? Definitely my involvement with Hack@UCF (the Collegiate Cyber Defense Club @ UCF). My professional end goal is to be a pentestRaytheon and other organizations interested in enhancing er (basically a security consultant that is paid by a company to find cybersecurity, including U.S. Homeland Security, McAfee, security vulnerabilities by hacking the company). A goal you hope to reach in the next few years? I don’t think it’s healthy to be fully satisfied where you are professionally when you’re in your 30’s. The thing I love most about being in television is that your role is constantly evolving. The irony of a predictable surprise...I’ll take that any day. I hope it never ends. From a personal standpoint, it’s easy. I have 2 guys who count on me to be a Wife and a Mom. My goal for the rest of my years is to do the best I absolutely can for them. Fondest memory of UCF? Homecoming. Without a doubt. Spirit Splash is an event like no other. It’s big, it’s messy, it’s loud...perfection. At what point during your UCF career do you think had the most effect on your professional career? Freshman year was fun, but you’re still soaking up the newness of it all, getting a little crazy and are busy meeting new people. Becoming a “professional” isn’t exactly the first thing on your mind. I have always been a little workaholic though, and really started to zero in on my professional aspirations during my Junior year. Big dreams are a part of who I am, and I found people just as driven when I was in the Greek system. I pledged ADPi and was super impressed with how fun but motivated these ladies were. It further sparked my fire. If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? I have to say safety for the females of the student body. Too many instances in the media recently from campus security, rape and far too many disappearances nationwide. My own sorority sister Jennifer Kesse is still missing. Her disappearance occurred well after her graduation, but education and awareness should be an early initiative. College is exciting but also welcomes a new level of vulnerability, both for males and females. Mindfulness in those matters should be a priority moving forward. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling? I did meet my husband of 5 years now at UCF-he’s amazing, so I have that going for me! But other than him, I would have to point the finger to one of my very best friends, Carissa Mastry. UCF roomies to “partners in crime” and now Moms. The evolution of our friendship is remarkable! You can catch Lauren on Golf Channel hosting Top 10, the network’s travel documentary series, GolfNow, and is a weekly contributor to Morning Drive.

Fulfilling a 6-Year-Old’s Dream: UCF Students Design & Build his Arm

The thing Alex Pring hated most about kindergarten wasn’t learning to cut, paste or count. It was answering the same question everyone asks when they meet the 6-year-old. “What happened to your arm?” Alex is missing his right arm from just above his elbow, and it’s the one thing he doesn’t like talking about. “I mean, I’m me. So I don’t have an arm,” he said. “I still try real hard to do things like other kids using what I’ve got. But it’s getting harder the more I grow.” Thanks to University of Central Florida engineering doctoral student Albert Manero, climbing a tree and catching a ball will get a lot easier for Alex. Manero heard about the Groveland boy’s need and pulled together a team of his friends. In their free time they designed an arm for Alex. It was made on a 3-D printer and runs with off-the-shelf servos and batteries that are activated by the electromyography muscle energy on Alex’s bicep. Unlike adults with missing arms, children’s arms are difficult to make because of the need to miniaturize components. And most insurance companies won’t pay for them because the prosthetics need to be replaced often as the child grows. Manero, who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCF in aerospace engineering, and his team designed and manufactured the arm for less than $350. Stratasys, one of the biggest commercial 3-D printer makers in the nation, donated some of the supplies. “My mother taught us that we’re supposed to help change the world,” said Manero, who is from the Tampa area. “We’re supposed to help make it better. That’s why we did it. The look on Alex’s face when he used it for the first time was priceless.” The team will upload the new designs and how to build the childsize arm and hand to the Internet so anyone with access to a 3-D printer can download the blueprints and give another child with a missing arm a chance to hug with both arms. In addition to Manero, the following team members helped to build the arm: • Tyler Petresky: Computer Engineering (UCF sophomore), Lead Electronics Developer • John Sparkman: Mechanical Engineering (UCF master’s degree student), Electronics Developer • Mateo Alvarez: Aerospace Engineering (UCF senior), Human Integration Lead • Tim Lindner: Senior Engineer Technician/Acting Manager, College of Engineering and Computer Science Machine Shop • Kevin Tiller: Computer Science (UCF graduate), Lead Consultant • Joseph Massimo: Civil Engineering (UCF graduate), Structural Lead • Katie Manero: Photographer and Owner of KTCrabb Photography. (UCF graduate) • Tyler Pierce: Videographer, Nurse with Florida Hospital (Admitted UCF student for Fall 2014) • Nathan Puhr: Videographer, Owner of Shutterlife Productions • Chie Sparkman: Seamstress and Tailor • Jon Rowe: Electrical Engineering (UCF master’s student), Consultant and Sponsor • Stephen Sofronsky: Aerospace Engineering (UCF master’s student), CAD Specialists, Developer • Dominique Courbin: Mechanical Engineering (UCF junior), Machining Specialist and 3D Printing • Todd Harston: Mechanical Engineer (UCF senior), CAD Developer

Doctoral Degree | Mechanical Engineering

Title or claim to fame in life? Fulbright Scholar, Doctoral Student A one-liner or phrase that best describes you? “Dream Big Dreams” What trait would you want people in and beyond the community to know you for? Certainly I can only hope that I’m friendly, fun & someone who loves creating interesting new links between industries. Community building truly is joy of mine, and I think it often leads to the best kind of new business opportunities. What qualities or traits do you have that help you do what you do? I like to dream and rally a team to take on impossible challenges and deadlines. A goal you hope to reach in the next few years professionally and/or personally? I hope to graduate with my doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and move into industry to design space planes.

Fondest memory of UCF? My senior design team built a 6 foot wing span RC airplane for an international design competition, and drove it to Kansas to compete. Seeing the plane take off and perform well was incredible. Unfortunately, a tornado hit the hanger we were flying at and destroyed 1 billion dollars in damage--but the plane and we came home safely and it is displayed in the engineering atrium. If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? Sounds like a challenging job. I hope to see our teacher to student ratio become more competitive--which they announced they will be hiring a 100 new professors. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling? My wife, Katie Manero is by far my favorite Knight. Other favorites include: Blake Bortles, as he has handled his career with class and respect-making UCF proud to have him represent our school. Tim Lindner: Machine Shop Manager, Senior Technician. --He let a group of kids come into his laboratory wanting to build an arm for a child, and jumped on board to make the impossible reality.

Radio Personality | WTKS104.1FM “The News Junkies” Title or claim to fame in life? Bar Musician by night and Producer/Sidekick for The News Junkie on Real Radio 104.1 by day. Sometimes I find time to sleep. A one-liner or phrase that best describes you? This is my last one, I swear. What qualities or traits do you have that help you do what you do? Growing up, I always had a great recollection of song lyrics and useless knowledge, which never did well for me in school, but definitely helps out now. A goal you hope to reach in the next few years professionally and/or personally? While attending my 40th Dave Matthews Band concert wouldn’t be my parents’ idea of a life goal, it’s probably gonna happen before I get married so, uh... Sorry Mom. Fondest memory of UCF? Might sound trivial, but I adored the ability to grab sushi and a mug of sake on campus in between classes.Also, even though I wasn’t a student yet, that Knightstock with OAR, Jason Mraz, and Big 10-4 all in one night was epic. What part of your UCF career had the most effect on your professional career? I’m pretty sure I got the email to come interview for Real Radio when I was sitting in class checking e-mails when I should’ve been taking notes.That was my foot in the door that eventually led to my spot in middays. If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? Resign. I shudder at the thought of being president of anything, so if by some stretch of catastrophe I somehow become the president of a school, it’d probably be in the student body’s best interest that I quit while I’m ahead. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling/girlfriend/boyfriend? I would say Sabrina... She’s definitely one of my favorite people, let alone Knights. I’m sure she would say the same about me, but if she doesn’t, then screw her, I pick Daniel Tosh.

Mike Rosenfeld Agent | WME|IMG Title or claim to fame in life? Talent Agent at WME | IMG. A one-liner or phrase that best describes you? Life shouldn’t be ordinary, not now, not ever. What qualities or traits do you have that help you do what you do? The ability to take a step back and look at a deal from multiple perspectives to find the best overall solution for all involved. More often than not, it’s not just about winning, it’s about making everyone involved feel like they have won & are happy with the final deal. A goal you hope to reach in the next few years professionally and/or personally? Continuing to creatively build & find new business opportunities for our current & future clients at WME/ IMG. Fondest memory of UCF? Seeing tens of thousands of smiling faces enjoying the concerts I produced with the Campus Activities Board as the Concert Director & Assistant Concert Director from 2000 to 2004. Busta Rhymes, Run DMC, 311, Less Than Jake, 3 Doors Down, Sean Paul, Uncle Kracker, Stephen & Julian Marley, John Mayer, Seven Mary Three, to name a few. At what point during your UCF career do you think had the most effect on your professional career? The moment I took the risk to go against the grain for what I believed in and not only move the homecoming concerts downtown to Church Street Station to become massive street parties for the entire Orlando community, but also add a concert element into UCF’s epic Spirit Splash tradition with both Seven Mary Three and the Marleys. Both were logistical and political nightmares that proved if I could put my mind to it, I could accomplish anything despite being told all along that it would never happen. If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? Make sure UCF gets into one of the Power 5 conferences to ensure the competitive & financial well-being of UCF Athletics, which is a core driver to building a strong alumni foundation nationwide. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling? As crazy as it sounds, I owe a very long overdue thank you to Sean and Rick of aXis and no better place to do it than in his publication that they built from scratch. With their guidance and mentorship, they introduced me to the wacky music scene of Orlando, FL in 2001, which included Creed, Matchbox Twenty, 7 Mary Three, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Jeff Hanson Management, Trans Con Talent, among many others. Most importantly, they provided me the opportunity to be involved with the Florida Music Festival & Conference, which quickly accelerated my education in event producing & industry networking, lightyears ahead of anything I could have possibly imagined. So, thank you guys for helping put me on the path to success.

Lauren Hodges

A goal you hope to reach in the next few years professionally and/or personally? My personal goals within the next few years are to keep my close friendships intact and to enjoy and live life to the fullest.

Executive Wellness Strategies | Lake Nona Boot Camp

Fondest memory of UCF? My fondest memories at UCF were any Spirit Splash or going to the Fiesta Bowl to see UCF beat Baylor.

Title or claim to fame in life? Titles in order of importance: Mother, Coach, and Dr. My claim to fame in life is layered. My best claim to fame is two short, loud, 3 and 5 year old UCF fans. Our older son’s first words were “UCF” which came out sounding like “EEEF” but I’ll take it...I think that’s claim to fame enough. Secondly, I have a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from UCF c/o 2011 and a bachelor’s in English from UCF c/o 2004. I own a company called Executive Wellness Strategies in which I am a speaker and educator in the corporate wellness field. I also own three fitness boot camps in the Orlando area - the largest of which is Lake Nona Boot Camp in the Lake Nona area. And finally, I am the founder of the Central Florida Wellness Council which is a networking and educational outreach group for health and wellness professionals in the Central Florida area. A one-liner or phrase that best describes you? I have many leather bound books. What qualities or traits do you have that help you do what you do? Incredibly driven, stubborn, ambitious, and (probably annoyingly) positive. I do not like taking “no” for an answer or being told I can’t do something.

At what point during your UCF career do you think had the most effect on your professional career? I would say my graduation had the most effect on my professional career. If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? If I were the President of UCF, I would work on expanding Knight-Lynx so it can work for local and downtown bars for students throughout the week. I would also work on building a Greek Park 2 so Greek Life can strengthen and have central locations. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling? My favorite Knight who most Knights know is Blake Bortles. He was able to continue to put UCF on the map, and the football team improved each year under his leadership.

A goal you hope to reach in the next few years professionally and/or personally? I hope to grow EWS into one of the most competitive grassroots, small business corporate wellness companies in the Central Florida region. I want to reach out to as many people and companies as possible to share the message that we can live healthy, thriving, productive lives filled with purpose and still perform at our absolute best both at home and at work. Fondest memory of UCF? Two: the first is walking across the CFE Arena stage to receive my doctoral degree in August of 2011. My son yelled “Go Mommy” as I shook hands with Dr. Hitt; I’ll never forget that moment. And the second has got to be the opening game against Texas in 2007. It was the little things: walking up the stairs to our seats; the roar of the student section when the team ran out; the swaying of the stadium when Zombie Nation played; the incredible dynamic on the field (this was the time of Kevin Smith and Kyle Israel); and being one field goal away from beating the Longhorns. Such a proud moment as a Knight. At what point during your UCF career do you think had the most effect on your professional career? I used to teach spinning at the Rec Center when it first opened.This little side job opened my eyes to a field I wouldn’t have thought of, which is the fitness field (I was an English major after all, and dead set on teaching at the university level...I eventually taught at UCF for two years as an adjunct in English and loved it but knew it wasn’t my calling).This little part-time spinning job was also my part-time job in graduate school at UNC in Wilmington, NC and, when I was accepted into the Ed.D. program back at UCF, this little part-time job turned into the idea of starting a little boot camp back in Lake Nona to get through school.That tiny little boot camp exploded into a thriving business which led me to more and more research into the health, wellness, and performance psychology fields...which led to my realization that my purpose in life was these companies and this field. I didn’t realize at 19 years old that the small, fun part-time business of teaching spin would lead to the career I am in today. If you were the Prez of UCF, what would you do to UCF to cement your legacy? If I were President of UCF, I would continue the work already being done to bring UCF to the top of the list of competitive universities in the southeast. I wouldn’t do much to UCF in particular except request Ed Ellis to be my personal strength and conditioning coach and have a permanent billboard on I-4 West just near USF that said “We have our own football stadium...what did you ever do?” I’d also make Knightro my bodyguard. Your favorite Knight besides a husband/wife or sibling? My favorite Knight is definitely Kenrick Zondervan who played forward/center for our basketball team from, I believe, 2005-2009. Zondervan was out of control - his energy, passion, and impatience on the court was not only incredibly entertaining but pumped me up for every basketball game. (I think AJ Rompza even had to calm a few times, which is ironic)....he wasn’t necessarily an historic player like Culpepper or Smith, but I can tell you he was sorely missed when he graduated!

@MAYORBURNSY OFFERS ALL TIME KNIGHTHOOD TO THE SELECT FEW THAT BLEED BLACK & GOLD

A really fun pop culture pissing contest that people love to have, when it comes to which colleges we graduated from, is pretending that it really matters that more famous people went to School A than School B. Basically, when your school’s most important sports team (let’s not kid ourselves, it’s always football) is shitting the bed, the best response to any insults about that lack of success is typically, “Oh yeah? Well this famous person went to my school.” It’s a hilariously stupid way to validate an institute of higher learning, but you know what? I fully endorse it. After all, if going to college was actually about getting an education, then we’d all be walking around with Nobel Prizes and Pulitzers dangling from our testes instead of celebrating the latest Kardashian leaked nudes. Obviously, schools that are older always have more famous alumni, and I’d usually demand that the lowest peons from those colleges respect that age difference, but they never do. That’s why we all have to put up with the annual slobbering of Notre Dame’s holy balls, as if that football program is still relevant, because a long, long time ago, football players in South Bend did more than just lie about their dead girlfriends. So for all of you UCFers out there looking to impress your peers and colleagues from the bigger, allegedly more prestigious universities around the nation with a list of names of famous (Golden) Knights alumni, I’ve got you covered with this little cheat sheet. Everyone already knows that Blake Bortles is currently the most famous person to ever graduate from UCF – did he actually graduate? I don’t really care – but when it comes to football, we are always able to proudly boast other successful NFL stars like Daunte Culpepper, Brandon Marshall, Asante Samuel, Josh Sitton, and Bruce Miller, who is also, for what it’s worth, the second most important redhead in the world, behind Karen Gillan. However, her new show Selfie is sort of hot garbage, so if the 49ers would actually let Bruce score a TD, he’d probably move into first. The usual football suspects won’t typically draw admiration, because every school has alumni playing in the NFL, even USF, if you can believe it. So wow people with other sports stars like Michelle Akers, who you can refer to as the First Lady of American Soccer and nobody will know or care to doubt it, and Olympic volleyball superstar Phil Dalhausser. Did you know that he was also a Lambda Chi at UCF? He was! I know that because if you’ve ever met a Lambda Chi in college, it’s the first thing they tell you before their name, even if they’ve never laid eyes on the guy. Additionally, UCF has sent a handful of baseball players to the big leagues, including Mike Maroth, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and is therefore considered the most successful, and Chad Mottolla(who was drafted just ahead of some guy named Jeter), and who I love to tell people is the greatest Florida/ Miami Marlins player of all-time, because nobody knows dick about that team anyway. (Also, I tell people that pitchers Randy Johnson and Joe Saunders went to UCF, because two politicians by those names indeed graduated from UCF, but nobody cares about politics.) “But what about someone who can kill me with his bare hands, Burnsy?” Great question, me. Would you believe that there’s someone in the UFC from UCF? Haha, no you’re not suddenly dyslexic, I’m talking about UFC middleweight tough guy Tom Lawlor. Sure, he’s been out of action since April of 2013, and I only recently learned that he graduated from UCF – even though it’s suddenly painfully clear that I wrote about him in college – but as soon as he comes back, he’ll be my new favorite fighter not named Gunnar Nelson. Fun Idea: Go ahead and tell people that Gunnar Nelson graduated from UCF, too. He’s from Iceland, so he’ll never find out. What about the world of entertainment? Jesus, I’m really nosey today. For starters, fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm might know that Cheryl Hines is one of the most prominent UCF alumni in all of show business. If you’re younger than 35 and wear sleeveless shirts to bars, you probably think that Daniel Tosh is UCF’s most important alum, but you’re wrong. I’m pretty sure that the edgier Dane Cook doesn’t give much of a crap about his alma mater when it isn’t winning the Fiesta Bowl. In fact, you know who’s more important than Tosh? Terence Trent D’Arby. I always forget that the guy who sang “Wishing Well” went to UCF, but I was also convinced for a long time that he was Lisa Bonet’s twin brother. Other notable UCF alumni in entertainment include Mark Miller from Sawyer Brown (who from what?) and model and Taco Bell commercial star Brett Novek. While I’d love to encourage you to tell people that George Clooney went to UCF, we should all appreciate the career of actor and UCF grad David Blue, who starred in the TV series Stargate Universe, but much more importantly played “Lacrosse Partygoer” in The Comebacks. On a local level, it’s hard to pick who the most important UCF graduates are in the Orlando community. A lot of people might say it’s Orlando Magic President Alex Martins, but I’m not sure that I want anyone who was involved with the way our only franchise collapsed to this latest level of mediocrity being associated with UCF’s education. For my money, the most important of all UCF alumni is probably Brian Wheeler, founder and CEO of Tijuana Flats. Last time I checked, not even Blake Bortles made awesome tacos. You want more of this? @MayorBurnsy
