Introduction Studios and Outside Broadcast (OB) vehicles typically have a main vision mixer backed up by an emergency-cut bus panel driving a separate video router, with the final output being selected via a 2x1 switch and buffered by a frame synchroniser.

Audio from a separate audio mixer, which may require encoding into Dolby-E, is then embedded into this feed.

Traditional Solution Using Brand-X Cards A common feature of the Axon Synapse range of modular products is the large number of processing functions that a single card can fulfil when compared to the traditional approach of a card having a single dedicated function.

This example of cards from “Brand-X”, shows how, even with some combining of functionality,

the traditional approach would require 4 separate cards with the interconnections between cards involving the installation of numerous cables, this approach also leads to an approximate doubling of power consumption . Each card has a signal reclocking stage on its input introducing jitter and a decreasing of signal stability.

Synapse HXT10/DIO48 Solution A single HXT10 card is capable of switching between two inputs, synchronising the video to external reference (with separate timing adjustments for HD and SD) and simultaneously providing 2x HDSDI, 2x SDI and 2x Composite outputs. The SDI and Composite outputs have a colour correction to accommodate the conversation to CCIR601 and also a fully featured ARC.

(N+1 etc.) in a Synapse frame, a wide range of audio processing functionality can be added without the need for any cables to be installed.

The HXT10 has four, independently controllable, group based audio embedders on both the HD and SD processing paths, the HXT10 is a MasterCard and by installing cards in slots to the right of it

By substituting the DIO48 with a DBE08 card Dolby-E encoding of various audio groupings can be added without increasing the number of cards within the system.

The example below shows HXT10 and DIO48 cards used together to provide all of the functionality required to process the signals originating from a studio or OB vehicle.

HXT10 Settings The HXT10 card offers a wide range of control over source selection, video processing, audio embedding and ancillary data insertion.

The examples below illustrate the Axon Cortex control screens for both the HD and SD settings on the HXT10 card showing the separate, independently adjustable, Frame Synchronisers for HD and SD, each having a colour corrector. The ancillary data and audio embedding can be individually set for each video standard and a comprehensive ARC and picture sharpness tools are provided for the SD output.
