Introduction Softel, an UK based company active in the subtitling market, has requested us to build hardware in order to replace some of their PC based solutions. The main idea is to take hardware development out of their hands. An important side effect of this is that our board will be less power consuming and more stable. The intention of this partnership is to develop multiple products for different applications. Control of the boards will be done by Cortex and the data transport to/from the Axon cards will be done through Softel’s vFlex ® software over Ethernet.

At this moment we have defined three phases where every phase will be a product. Those are the HSI11, HSI12, HSI13 and HSI14.

Applications The HSI11 will typically be used in applications where Teletext subtitling is required on the program stream as part of the play out process. Generally this will be for live closed captioning where the program material is not available in time for the captions to be preprepared and added to the program material as part of the production process.

The subtitle data stream will be generated by Softel’s vFlex MC® application.

The HSI12 will typically be used in applications where triggers need to be sent to remote locations. For example; triggering of regional advertisements in a general feed.

The cue tone will be generated by Softel’s vFlex MC® application or GPI input contact. When the cue tones are decoded it could be outputted on the GPI16 or inserted into the Ethernet connection.

The HSI13 will typically be used in applications where graphic overlays are needed.

Generally this will be for live open captioning where the program material is not available in time for the captions to be pre-prepared and added to the program material as part of the production process.

The HSI14 will typically be used in applications where Teletext subtitling is required on the program stream as part of the play out process. Generally this will be for live open captioning where the program material is not available in time for the captions to be preprepared and added to the program material as part of the production process.

The subtitle data stream will be generated by Softel’s vFlex MC® application.

Product description The HSI11-HSI12-HS13-HSI14 are standalone cards which are part of Softel’s vFlex MC® solution. This solution enables quick and easy insertion of subtitles and other data, onto a program feed, Cue tone encoding and decoding and ancillary data decoding with OSD; this card is controlled by Softel’s vFlex MC® application.

Cue tone encoding and decoding (Ecrypted or non-encrypted) Input of GPI’s on platform Output of GPI’s on GPI16 Inserts incoming cue tones generated by Softel’s vFlex MC® application in a parallel WST-B in SD format or OP47 in HD Cue decoding specific requirements:  We need to be able to receive the incoming SDI or HD-SDI data stream. The card will decode the cues and pass the status to either a GPI or network connection.  We need to be able to drive GPI16 card as output, so some form of communication between the HSI12 and the GPI16 is required  GPI16 cards may be accessed by multiple decoder cards in same chassis.

Cue encoding specific requirements:  We need to be able to insert data into the incoming SDI or HD-SDI  An external device will communicate with our software either via the network or via a GPI  GPI inputs can come from HSI12 card  [optionally] GPI inputs can come from GPI16 card and be passed to HSI12 In terms of configuration and licensing the card will work in same way as HSI11 (Inserter).

Data is likely to be OP47 or WST, but ideally we want pass raw luma/chroma values rather than data bytes. This allows us to use cue tone signalling outside standard Teletext. We realised this may be a challenge with existing card and want to discuss what our options are.

We want to support HD or SD on same card, as per HSI11.

We want to be able to insert on 1,2 or 3 lines of either HD and SD. Again we realise this may be a challenge with existing card and are happy to discuss.

We do not require decoding and encoding at the same time on the same card.

HSI13 Block diagram

Features and capabilities  Softel will deliver graphics data so no font rending required. (.png, .tga or…?)  Typically we only need to access around 1/3 of screen lines, so for first version we do not need

to access to whole screen. If you can give us enough buffering to cover whole screen then that would be even better.

We are expected 2 maybe 4 (circular) frame buffers which we can write imagines into. Each frame buffer can be turned transparent or opaque so that they can be updated while not on display. We need two buffers so that one can be on-screen while the other is being updated.

Our expectation is that we can change whole screen buffer within 1 or 2 seconds.

We were expecting to only drive this via network so no ANC/VANC decoding required with initial version.
