The building itself as if a bridge that connected the lake and the greenery, that linked the nature and technology. With this building shape, people can experienced new spaces by the green corridor. To enjoy the whole facilities, this area is supported with monorail. With some stop stations, guests can choose the activity that fits them, whether it’s enjoying the real experience planting in the rice field, tracking on foot or by bicycle, interacting with the animals on the bird park, enjoying some beautiful views on the lake, or doing research on the study center.

IMAGINARY LINE TRACK
NEW HERITAGE NOL KM Yogyakarta, Indonesia
2011
ISSUE 1
discontinuity of several significant points along the imaginary track line
2
lack of attention of imaginary track line as imaginary view
3
lack of understanding of Yogyakarta’s imaginary line as the main line for development of the city
IMAGINARY LINE TRACKING
DESIGN STRATEGY
BY EXPLORING THE IMAGINARY LINE 1 | organizing the pedestrian area from Tugu Yogyakarta along the way to the east area of Nol KM (Kilometer Zero)
WHY
PURPOSE
Imaginary Line Track offered an interesting ‘exploration’ for all people (tourists and locals) to enjoy the imaginary line with a new point of view.
STUDY OBJECT
TOURIST ATTRACTION

HERITAGE NOL KM YOGYAKARTA ISSUE DISCONTINUITY Lots of history icons situated around the Nol KM area. This inevitably making this node too strong, somehow giving too much euphoria which detached the fact that this area is also part of imaginary line of Yogyakarta which led into the 'real' icon, Kraton Ngayogyakarta.
LANDSCAPE DESIGN Landscape design in this area can still be developed better according to the guideline from the local government and emphasizing the vista. The key to create the new landmark is to treat and serve the pedestrian better.
HISTORY Nol KM used to be the starting point to measure the distance among lots of area in Yogyakarta and even for another city surrounding outside. It used to be called 'Simpang Air Mancur' (fountain intersection) since there was a big fountain at the center of intersection which demolished due to the bigger traffic.

PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT
PECINAN TOURISM WALK Semarang, Indonesia
2011
SEMARANG CHINATOWN (known as Pecinan Semarang) is one of historical-heritage area. Nowadays, this district start to be forgotten by people. To make it liveable again, a small recovery through tourism is one of the options.

With PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT, the tourism concept offered ‘an upgrade’ to the district by emphasizing the ‘WALKING EXPERIENCE’ in every alleys which hopefully can be one of the tourism objects that bring benefits to the people inside, both financially and social ways.

DESIGNCONCEPT
WELCOME GATE CROSSING CIRCULATION
Chinatown area in Semarang had 4 gates back in the past. The design concept here tries to bring them back. The gates concept is not only in a statue or pillar shape, but more to the meaning of gate which is an entrance and welcoming.
EXISTING
TRANSFORMATION
An already-existed intersection is designed into commercial area. Together with the stone shop and other small shop, a small café placed into this area to gather more attention to this alley.
Complimenting the new sightseeing deck, another existing building turned into a guesthouse. With the location which more private, tourist can enjoy the ‘real’ feel of chinatown with less crowded. A vacant space also used to connect the an alley one to another. Since a chinatown has a crowd and compact ambience, the development brought to ‘higher’ level. A sightseeing deck designed to enjoy the whole area and create new meeting point.
This intersection connect the alley to the other street which also connected the temple as well. There for not only gate, a treatment for the pedestrian is needed for landmark developing. To complete that concept, the old residential building turned into a guesthouse with interior replica of old Chinese houses.
OBSERVATIONDECK WALKING EXPERIENCE offered by this concept concluded in a design that fills the abandoned area which’s connecting two alleys in this chinatown area. This area located between Gang Gambiran and Gang Tengah. As mentioned before, in the mouth of Gang Gambiran, there was a gate to enter this area in the past. By recovering that gate, Gang Gambiran becoming one of the main paths that offered. To attract people back to the walking trend, this OBSERVATION DECK is designed. This observation deck works in two way. First, because of the shape, the height, and also the materials, people expected to walk closer, approaching this deck. That means, people expected to got their first waking experience. The second way, by going up this observation deck, they can enjoy the view of the whole area, and find the traditional temples and other preserved buildings that they haven’t seen before in the first walking experience. Therefore, after seeing it, they expected to start the new steps exploring this chinatown area.
THE fiveELEMENTS The concept of the observation deck itself, came from the five basic elements that Chinese believed. There are water, fire, metal, wood, and earth. These elements transformed through its philosophy and give something new, something different, something modern in this historical area, but still close to the Chinese culture. By using all of these elements, this design expected to bring new tourism attraction and also balancing the energy of this area.
WATER
FIRE
METAL
WOOD
EARTH
The water element in this area comes as a small pond in the middle of the observation deck. As the symbol of birth, it expected to bring new ‘life’ to this area.
The fire element is a symbol of youth, which in this idea comes in the glass of the railing. Hopefully this youth spirit comes through the district as well.
Metal represent ‘old age’, which is suitable with the historical background briefly showed up as the main structure, expected to be easy maintain and long last.
Wood material brought to this concept are plant, wood itself, and spaces. Greenery also being the part of this space that connects two alleys in this district.
This element obviously seen as where the structure took a place. Moreover, the shadows that created from the shape are part of this element itself.
This observation deck’s connecting two different alleys (gangways), Gang Gambiran and Gang Tengah. The existing data from Gang Gambiran shows that almost 90% of the area are family neighborhood. The 10% left are an art gallery, traditional temple, few small shops, stone’s craft house, and swallow’s nest. There are also some old houses that left behind in Gang Gambiran because of the high maintenance cost of the building. These type of building proposed to be recovered and preserved as guest houses where tourists can enjoy the traditional architecture during their leisure time.
In the other hand, Gang Tengah is more actives and looks more modern due to the building types. It is fulfilled by public facilities and business activities such as banks, shops, and other offices. Even there are some family houses, most of it are already renovated to the more modern face and also used as shop or restaurant in the ground floor. Through this observation deck’s, hopefully those two alleys connected well and shared the different ‘attractions’ between them.

UPGRADED WATER CANAL SIDE
THE NEW SELOKAN MATARAM Yogyakarta, Indonesia
SELOKAN MATARAM is one of proof of old urban architecture’s great development. Besides its role as main ditch/water canal for the entire city, the history behind this design is one of smart idea from the past and great material to be studied in the future. Nowadays, side areas of this water canal grows as a commercial area and dense neighborhood. The condition of the SELOKAN MATARAM and its surrounding it’s not really good despite of its potentials. With this ‘upgrading’ concept idea, there’s a hope that it would provoke a great development and vanishing the ‘dirty’ concept of a ditch or water canal

The design concept is as simple as it can be, trying to make a pioneer building that can be the new face of along the water canal. Due to the narrow area, the building mass turned into a vertical development. Based on original building function in this area, the building type is about to mixed all the commercial and living aspects, so that the area around this water canal more liveable.

eastLIVINGTERRACE Living room competition design submission. Channeling Papua’s traditional house as inspiration. Capturing earthy tones by using brownish material and unfinished concrete on the wall. Red brick on one side capturing attention and preventing the dull ambience in the room. Completed with a big window at the opposite, using limited space outside as a vertical garden.
theCONCEPT Traditional life in the East Coast area of Indonesia portraying the best side of an archipelago country. In Papua, there are two types of vernacular design of house. Despite the different look and shape, both of them somehow have similar interior which is divided as two part, ground and up floor. The ground area is used for all kind of family meeting including supper and simple chats while the upper one is used as the private area to sleep. Collecting that philosophy, the main point of the new designed living room is to create a space lower than the surrounding to make a warm place to talk, to gather, and do some leisure stuffs and adding some space with bigger furniture on the higher level.
