About Me i

About Me

My name is Aaron Yakel and I have always had a keen fascination with how things are designed , how they function, and why things work the way they do. I was raised in Grafton, Wisconsin and attended Grafton High School and graduated in 2008. In high school I played on the soccer and golf team. Through my experiences on the playing field I have learned to be a competitive athlete and hard working individual. These qualities can be seen in the way I approach my work in the classroom and in studio. I chose to persue a degree in architectural design at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. I was drawn towards architecture because of its demand for critical thinking and problem solving, as well as its demand for detail in both the macro and micro scale. Design possibilties are endless and play a significant role in the way people act within certain spaces, rooms, and buildings. Similarily, I want to be an architect so I may have the ability to help reduce the environmental impacts that buildings create by utilizing proper design methods in the buildings created both on my own, and with a design team. I feel that through my experiences at work and my education in architeural design that I have the certain skills and qualities that it takes to become an important member of a design team at your architecture firm.

Goals

Acquire an internship from an architectural firm that fully engages my skills in design and critical thinking. Engage in various projects that will allow me to broaden my skills in all aspects of architectural design. Lastly, put myself in a leadership position on your design team that will use my skills and abilities to aid in important design decisions.

Overview

I learned to become a dedicated and hard working employee through the experiences that I have gone through, without which I would not be the person I am today. I have been seen as someone that can be counted on to finish the tasks that are set before me and handle the responsibility that follows with them. Through my studies at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UW - Milwaukee, I have gained the knowledge in design and critical thinking that will enable me to become an integral part of your design team.

Unity Temple Frank Llyod Wright ADDITION The Addition to the Unity Temple is intended to function as a supporting facility for the church. Through the use of bilateral symetry, similar circulation arrangements, and minimalism in the facade; both of these buildings are able to fuse together into one cohesive unit. The use of wood creates a subtle difference between the two, while the influence of concrete unites the buildings as they connect to one another on the main axis.

C o mm u n i t y P o o l Downer Avenue MILWAUKEE The Downer Avenue community pool and aquatics center is proposed to be built on a corner parking lot near Sendiks grocery and seafood market. The building wil be divided into three distinct areas. The gathering space for members to meet and greet as well as locker rooms for getting ready. A large double height swimming area for competitive events and training. Lastly, a smaller youth pool area with adjacent sun deck can be used by children and their parents.

UWM Dormitory Campus Project UW-MILWAUKEE The site placement of this dorm proposal is located just west of the UWM soccer fields on the edge of the campus. There is a substantial slope from the soccer field down to the street level. My proposal utilizes the slope to create a focal point by allowing there to be an entrance to not only the dormitory’s courtyard space but access to the soccer field. It was crucial to create a space that allows the students to feel connected to the surrounding campus buildings

Metal Fabrication Projects

Rainscreen Proposals Fabrication METHODOLOGIES The challenge is to create a rainscreen that not only functions to block out rain but additionally provide solar shading and be aesthetically pleasing. Each design is unique in its construction and material choices. A key concept of this design study was the play of light bouncing off specific metals, plastics, and wood. The control of thermal comfort and solar gain is quintessetional for retaining human comfort inside a given space.

Lazer Cut Plexi Glass and CNC Milled Corian

My partner and I chose to CNC engrave the texture of tree bark into the corian material to achieve a justiposition between a synthetic product and and natural texture. By merging these ideas we were able to design an effective and elegant rain screen and water collector.
