IS DEALS CONFUSION ON GOVERNING AGENCY

B

atangas State University - Integrated School is currently in unassertive confusion on its policy-governing body between the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) and the Department of Education (DepEd) as both contribute differently to implementations facilitated.

Talks surfaced in 2023 wherein participants from BatStateU-IS were supposed to advance in the First Lego League (FLL) World Championship in Texas, USA, but were deferred due to unforeseen factors, one of which is the confusion on securing travel documents.

In addition, the issue became a factor on the deferral of Batang IS participants on several scheduled competitions such as Karibok ang Tuktok (KAT), E-Convergence, and Philippine Biology Olympiad (PBO), which were set this second semester.

According to DepEd, the school must go back to its Board of Regent (BoR) in the address of this off-campus activity.

CHEd has mandated a directive wherein 17 particular requirements must be submitted 15-20 days prior to any off-campus activity but it later stated through a letter of clarification that BatStateU-IS is not under their authority in terms of this aspect.

On the other hand, in accordance with CHEd Memorandum Order No. 63 Series of 2017, the commission acknowledges the academic right of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), including BatStateU, in forging towards quality education.

Dr. Nerrie Malaluan, the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA)

of Pablo Borbon Campus, said that the direct mandates for the Integrated School come from the board under CHEd whose some members include representatives from the commission.

According to Dr. Malaluan, every policy that either DepEd or CHEd mandates is carefully evaluated by the board of officials before deciding on whether to implement it on the Integrated School or not.

“Lahat ng inaaprubahang policy, after ng academic council, ine-endorse ni President doon sa board para maevaluate,” she expressed.

Meanwhile, BatStateU-IS currently follows orders on a case-to-case basis from memoranda mandated by university officials.

Scribes, broadcasters, bag recognitions in DSPC 2023 via Reighn Jasper Fabian

I

n a stunning display of journalistic prowess, the LATHE High School marked its triumphant return to the limelight in the recently concluded Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) at the University of Batangas last November 27, December 1 and 2, clinching a total of 45 awards after a 4-year hiatus.

Two staffers of The Lathe High School qualify for the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC).

Lorraine Anne Manglo, the Editor-in-Chief, triumphed at 2nd place in Editorial Writing - English, while Frances Ysabelle Agdamag, the Associate Editor, prevailed as the champion in Feature Writing - English and as the 3rd placer in Photojournalism - English.

Joined by different schools in Batangas City, student journalists showcased exceptional skills across various categories, including News Writing, Feature Writing, Sports Writing, Science Writing, and Editorial Writing, as well as Copyreading and Headline Writing, Collaborative Desktop Publishing, Online Publishing, Editorial Cartooning, Photojournalism, and Television and Radio Scriptwriting and Broadcasting.

Mr. John Carlo Quiane, the adviser of the LATHE High School, said that in preparing for the conference, there were limitations in time, resources, materials, and mentors, but despite these challenges, the publication managed to resolve them, and made trainings possible.

This is attributed too to the guidance and cooperation of the resource speakers, and the immense support of the department.

Furthermore, he also emphasized to the staffers that whether awardee or not, they are already winners, because the experience brought them learnings which they can use for their growth and development as student-journalists.

[from] joining again next time. Winning takes time and efforts. For the meantime, tuloy lang muna ulit sa mga trainings and tuloy lang muna ulit sa pagkakatuto,” Quiane stated.

Meanwhile, the publication is currently focused on conducting training sessions and a series of press works in preparation for the upcoming RSPC to be held in Laguna in February 27 to March 2, 2024.

The division of Batangas City is also set to facilitate a cliniquing period on Feberuary 19-23, 2024.

Violence to silence dissent of Philippine journalism via Cshenizylle Ligayada

A

s the country continuously engulfed an unsafe space for independent media where silencing of journalists, the Philippines currently counts 199 journalists barred from democracy, silencing and severing their hands from the power of independent media.

Issued by the Committee to Protect Journalists, no improvement was shown by the Philippines as suspects go unpunished, landing from seven to eight rank as one of the “most dangerous countries in the world for journalists”, producing the worst records of unprotected media.

Since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. commenced its regime in June 2022, four dead journalists were listed to be involved in “heinous attacks” including Rey Blanco, Percival “Percy Lapid” Mabasa, Chris Bunduquin, and Juan “Johnny Walker” Jumalon.

First to the list was a radio reporter at Power 102.1 DYRY RFM, Rey Blanco who was stabbed in September 18, 2022 by Charles Amada who turned himself in and confessed his motive, stating that Blanco’s murder was due to his contradiction against Blanco’s advocacy condemning him and his family.

Along with him is Percival

“Percy Lapid” Mabasa, a popular press journalist who have criticized organizations and officials like Bantag with their alleged involvement in corruption and other anomalies and was fatally shot in October 3, 2022 by suspects namely the former Bureau of Corrections Director General Gerald Bantag, who, starting from then, was suspended from his post, as well as prisons security official Ricardo Zulueta and other key suspects.

Consequently, Cresenciano “Cris” Bundoquin, a radio commentator who had been receiving death threats according to UNESCO, was murdered in a drive-by attack in May 3, 2023 in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro by identified suspects namely Narciso Ignacio Guntan and Isabelo Lopez Bautista.

Lastly, and the most recent report dating back to November 5, 2023 released that a prominent radio commentator, Juan Jumalon also known as

DJ Johnny Walker of Gold FM 94.7 was killed on-air by a still unknown assailant during his own radio broadcast witnessed live by Filipinos, being the fourth journalist killed under the Marcos administration and the 199th since democracy was restored in 1986 according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).

In an interview with Clare Lian Roxanne Martinez, the Opinion Editor of The Lathe High School, she pointed out that journalists serve as conveyors of truth in a democratic country where freedom of speech is incorporated in the constitution.

Thus, by silencing the press, they are concealing the truth and the freedom of the society.

“Journalism is the voice of the truth, and journalists are the conveyors of truth. I choose to live by the truth and to spread the truth even if it will put me in danger because by enlightening others we can prevent and stop circumstances that shouldn’t be happening,” she furtherly expressed.

STEMming Solutions: Revamped IS Curriculum in light of PISA 2022 results via Andrea Arellano

atangas State University - The NEU Integrated School and Laboratory School implement the Science and Technology Curriculum to help facilitate the dismal results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022.

With an average STEM concentration of 53.44% in subject courses from Grades 7 to 12, encompassing mathematics, reading, and science, the revised curriculum seeks to ameliorate the Philippines’ performance in the 2022 PISA, released December 5, 2023.

Grounded in the educational reforms of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, it provides an avenue for 21st-century learners to immerse in project-based and hands-

on learning, data interpretation involving theoretical knowledge of numerical data, and logical inference through reasoning, driving their growth as engaged and educated world-class citizens.

presented in a streamlined manner, with continuity, and without spiraling.” “These differences will significantly help students in gaining greater mastery and retention of the lessons in Math,” she added.

Developed towards the end of AY 2020-2021 and implemented in AY 2021-2022, the Science and Technology Curriculum consists of Science and Technology, Mathematics, Language and Arts, and Humanities, with 27, 9, 15, and 17 courses, respectively.

Forbye, regarding the additional initiatives that can enhance the PISA results, particularly in IS, Mrs. Soriano mentioned that “Two potential improvements could be implementing a Math-friendly classroom and adopting a digitalized Math approach. She added that “Students tend to grasp concepts more effectively when they are content and actively engaged in their learning process.”

When asked about the improvements she witnessed in her respective subject area brought forth by the new Science and Technology Curriculum, Mrs. Floreneth P. Soriano, the Course Area Chairperson for Mathematics, stated “As the course area chairperson of Mathematics, I find this new IS curriculum to be very beneficial. The topics are

science literacy, along with general or cross-curricular competencies, such as collaborative problem-solving, highlighting practical skills acquired by students as they approach the end of mandatory education.

The Philippines ranked among the lowest 10 out of 81 nations once again, garnering a Level 1a to 1b rating indicating below-minimum proficiency in all three subject areas with roughly 120 points below the average scores in its 2022 evaluation: 355 for mathematics, 347 for reading, and 373 for science.

With the main survey conducted from July 26 to September 16, 2022, the results mark the culmination of the 8th cycle of PISA since its onset in 2000.

Nearly half a million students from 81 countries across the globe, extending over South, Central, and North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, the Pacific, and Oceania – entailing 37 OECD countries, partook in PISA 2022.

DepEd eyes gradual reversion to June-March academic schedule via Aeisha De Guzman & Jasper Fabian

lasses for school year (SY) 2024-2025 are expected to start on July 29 as the Department of Education (DepEd) begins adjustments to reconvert to the past June to March schedule after three years of the August to June academic calendar.

Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) chairman Vladimer Quetua expressed hopeful remarks of opening SY 2025-2026 classes by the third week of June, though it was emphasized that nothing is final as of the moment.

On the other hand, DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringan told CNN Philippines’ The Source that the June opening is not possible yet since SY 20232024 is going to end on June 14 — pointing out the possibility of a shortened period of break for both the students and the teachers .

“Nag-a-agree sila doon sa provision ng draft, some minor adjustments but may consensus na that we are going to [start] next school year na June. We are looking at the SY 2025-2026 na makapag-June na talaga tayo, but for this next school year we are still looking at July opening,” he also said in another interview.

School administrators, teachers, parents, and student leaders have also agreed to the return of the former academic schedule after DepEd’s consultation last January 15, wherein the department presented the drafted guidelines of the reversion.

Quetua added that DepEd promised to add the cut in the 60-day school break to their service credits.

Moreover, the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TCD), along with some private schools within the country have underlined the need to thoroughly study and understand the effects of the change in the calendar amidst being open to the possibility.

Meanwhile, feedback from most parents highlighted that the return would aid in avoiding the extreme heat of summer experienced by children, though effects of the rainy season will be heightened in this time period.

Further revisions are still underway as the department continues to study results of consultations and discussions regarding the June to March school year return.

Team BatStateU IS-PH upheaves the Filipino pride in WRO - Panama 2023 via Lorraine Manglo

TECH TITANS – Batang IS Robotics Team represents the Philippines in the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) International Finals, with the theme “Connecting the World” held in Amador, Panama on November 7-9, 2023.

ompeting under the RoboMission - Junior High School Category are John Angelo M. Bautista, Rowlen Mathew A. Guia, and David Benjamin P. Marasigan, accompanied by their coach, IS Head Teacher, Mr. Luis Philip M. Oropesa.

The team ranked 48th out of 93 teams.

Furthermore, taking on the Future Engineers Self-Driving Cars competition are Sam Efrain A. Cananua, Ma. Hannah Sofia G. Gomez, and JoseAph Bernard A. Maala, with their mentor, Mr. Eugene E. Mendoza.

They emerged as the 22nd out of 40 participating countries.

In August 2023, the Integrated School participated in the Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO), joining in three categories but in different divisions in the elementary, junior high school, and senior high school levels.

Participants from the RoboMission JHS have triumphed as PRO champions while the Future Engineers team have succeeded as 2nd placers, as the top two teams who emerged in

every category will move to the world division.

In an interview, one participant from the Future Engineers category, Hannah Gomez, stated that some of the challenges that come with their Panama stint include digital divide and language barriers, however, were all aided through the help of other participants from different nations.

“Medyo mahirap kasi ‘yong sa language, kahit English, hindi pa rin madaling magkaintindihan.

Pero may mga other tourists naman na tumutulong sa communication,” said Gomez.

Moreover, according to Mr. Oropesa, they see the competition

as a rare opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop the students in the field of Robotics since the department has been delving into molding future innovators.

Currently, robotics technology is in the works to be strengthened, in the goal to further develop the Batang IS in this field since a subject area focusing on it is being administered.

This is only the second year that the department has joined in the PRO, while they have also participated in the FIRST Lego League in early 2023, another robotics competition organized by the Felta Multi-Media Inc. Back in 2022, the Integrated School welcomed Felta to introduce and provide an in-depth knowledge in the field of Robotics Technology — the avenue that had given way for the growth of Robotics education in the department.

STEM Days 2024 ROBOTech Tournament sets the scene for IS Robotics Education

I

n the pursuit of continuously molding the Robotics domain of BatStateU - The NEU Integrated School Department, STEM Days 2024 propels Batang IS to exhibit their robotic prowess in its ROBOTech Tournament on January 11, 2024.

Shaped by the annual Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO) and First LEGO League (FLL) organized by FELTA Philippines, the ROBOTech Tournament unveils its distinctive system, featuring two pivotal segments: the RoboMission and the Future Engineers Category.

The RoboMission category aims to gauge the participants’ expertise in assembling a course robot qualified to adeptly complete designated tasks within a limited timeframe.

Conversely, the Future Engineers category, constituting the tournament’s second phase, seeks to assess the contestants’ engineering acuity through the creation of a self-driving car primed to navigate and conquer a challenging racetrack course.

Mr. Jeffrey M. Relota, the Faculty-in-Charge of the contest, highlighted the potential brought by the contest to assist

students in acquiring critical thinking skills to adequately execute their robots based on specific guidelines, while also accentuating the significance of teamwork in achieving success in the tournament.

Further, Deshawn Drew Cantos, the team leader of Wild Azure Wyverns, who was hailed as the Best Future Engineers Team, said “Ako ay isang Batang IS na hindi naabutan ang bagong kurikulum kung saan itinuturo sa kapwa ko estudyante ang pagbuo at pagkocode ng robot sa Robotics, ngunit sa aking pagtuklas at pag-aaral sa larangang ito natutunan kong gumawa at mag-encode ng robot para sa kompetisyon na aking sinalihan.”

“Nakakatulong din ang mga tunggaliang ito upang higit na magkaroon sila ng tiwala sa sarili at mapaghandaan nila ang mga dapat harapin lalo kung interesado sila sa larangan ng Robotics.” Cantos added.

Meanwhile, Jerrald Martin Reyes, the team leader of Whimsical Red Huxian, awarded as the Best

RoboMission Team, expressed that, “Robotics may be deemed as a gateway for innovations that we, Batang IS are fortunate enough to access.” when questioned about how Robotics education can contribute to students’ future career readiness and skills development.

In addition, Reyes noted that he hopes for the inclusion of robotics as part of the senior high school curriculum, which may nurture young minds into becoming proficient tinkerers and critical thinkers.

Along with the developmental endeavors concentrated on Robotics, the new Science and Technology Curriculum of the department, with a mean focus on High School STEM subjects amounting to 53.44%, involves exploratory and specialization choices catering to Robotics in the Technology subject area of Grades 7 to 10.

Currently, the department focuses on continuous trainings and a series of complex executions to fully-equip the students for upcoming competitions.

UI GreenMetric ‘23 plants BatStateU - The NEU at 3rd nationally, 300th globally for campus environmental sustainability

E

stablishing a name in environmental sustainability, Batangas State University - The National Engineering University has proved its excellence in its second year of participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, securing the 300th rank among 1,183 universities across the globe and the 3rd spot out of 22 entries in the country, according to released results last December 5, 2023.

The university advanced from the 2022 Ranking’s 4th place within the Philippines and 351st rank out of 1050 higher education institutions (HEIs) worldwide, accumulating a total of 6760 points at that time.

Ranked through six key criteria with 39 indicators, BatStateU - The NEU currently attained a total score of 7270, consisting of 1400 points from Education and Research, 1410 points from Transportation, 650 points from Water, 1275 points from Waste, 1650 points from Energy and Climate

Change, and 885 points from Setting and Infrastructure.

Within the country, the university followed De La Salle University - Dasmarinas which reaped the 1st spot with a score of 7625 and the 2nd placer, Mariano Marcos State University, which obtained 7525 points.

“BatStateU’s notable ascent in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking reflects the collaborative efforts of our entire university community in implementing eco-friendly practices,

promoting sustainability initiatives, and cultivating a green mindset among our students, faculty, and staff,” stated BatStateU president, Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, after the university’s feat.

Pablo Borbon campus currently has two on-going projects, Zero-Waste Pablo Borbon and Task Force: Bakas, set to improve the sustainable practices of the school population.

This global ranking set in motion by Universitas Indonesia in 2010 instills the importance of environmentally sustainable initiatives and practices in instituting a green campus.

Initiated by Pablo Borbon’s Office of the Chancellor and Sustainable Development Office under the Memorandum Order No. 313 Series of 2023, the project Zero-Waste Pablo Borbon was implemented in the campus along with its extension campuses starting October 27 last year, with the intention

of lessening the production of non-biodegradable waste within university grounds.

On the other hand, Task Force: Bakas, “BAsura ay Bawasan kaliKASa’y Ingatan’’, which begun implementation in 2019 with the instigation of the former Integrated School Student Council (ISSC), now named Integrated School Junior High School Student Council (IS-JHSSC), and was resumed in 2023 after the pandemic, aims to encourage green practices within the IS Department.

BatStateU - The NEU fosters green practices through Zero-Waste Pablo Borbon

I

n alignment with the Memorandum Order No. 313 Series of 2023, Batangas State University The National Engineering University pushed through the implementation of Zero-Waste Pablo Borbon, a project underscoring the university’s compliance to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which began last October 27, 2023.

Administered by Pablo Borbon’s Office of the Chancellor, Dr. Expedito V. Acorda, and Sustainable Development Office, headed by Dr. Daryl M. Magpantay, the said initiative is carried out within the campus and its different departments along with its extension campuses—Rosario, Lemery, and San Juan campus.

Zero-Waste Pablo Borbon prompts the school population to take an initiative step towards sustainability by reducing the generation of disposables and non-biodegradable waste and encouraging the use of environmentally-friendly alternatives.

The project’s guidelines include the prohibition of onetime use decorations and some non-biodegradable items everyday, as well as the the execution of Zero Waste Fridays, in which food deliveries and the use of disposable utensils and containers are not permitted within university grounds.

The Integrated School (IS), a department under the Pablo Borbon campus, has welcomed the project and is currently practicing it alongside another on-going program only exclusive to the department, Task Force: Bakas, which was put into action in 2019.

“Simula po ng na-apply ‘to, every Friday po and most of the week po, almost all of the students are bringing their own containers po. And simula po no’n, parang pa-onti nalang po nang pa-onti ang mga laman ng basurahan and parang minsan na lang po nagiging puno po nang sobra yung mga basurahan natin dito,” expressed Mr. Sean Raphael B. Hernandez, a grade 10 student.

It can be recalled that despite environmental sustainability efforts, the IS Department received a memorandum from the Vice Chancellor of Administration and Finance, Asst. Prof. Shirlyne M. Guhit, about a large amount of waste generated following the celebration of IS Week and STEM Days 2023, last March 20 to March 24.

In spite of this, Mrs. Minerva M. Ramos, Head Teacher I of the IS-High School Department, stated in an interview that this prompted the re-emergence of Task Force: Bakas in which the student councils were encouraged to set guidelines in order to curb the department’s waste generation.

ith the theme, “Sulong Masiglang Batangueño”, the emergence of Batangas City’s culture has once again been exhibited in festive and colorful means in accordance with the celebration of the Batangas City Day on January 16, 2024.

Kicking off with the traditional parade, joyous rhythms and vibrant colors from various groups and bands, including the Batangas State University - Integrated School Drum and Lyre Band, encompassed the tail of routes set for the event.

s if one lost a childhood friend they grew up with, the Red Spartan community was met with disheartening news of a long-time neighboring restaurant being reduced to ashes.

The Other Place, popularly known as TOP, had reportedly burned down on the morning of January 26th.

The initial report from the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) stated that the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recorded the first alarm call at 7:03 AM, declared the fire under control at 7:32 AM, and cleared it out by 8:20 AM. According to officials, the flames quickly spread out across the restaurant made from light materials. Moreover, the BFP is still in the process of investigating how the whole incident came to be.

Along with the rapid blazing of fire was also the quick circulation about the mishap among students and faculty who went to Batangas State University - The National Engineering University (BatStateU - The NEU) the same morning, which was close by the Rizal Extension Avenue.

“Ako personally, I feel sad about the news. Sa 8 years ko sa BatStateU, nandiyan na s’ya, and knowing na bago pa naman tayo maging BatStateU, andiyan na si TOP. It has been part of the history kung tutuusin, hindi lamang ni BatStateU kundi ng buong Batangas City,” Mr. John Carlo Quiane, an Integrated School (IS) teacher, shared in an interview.

Mr. Brian Magboo, another member of the IS faculty, pointed out how the place speaks to its own identity, how it has been known for its lutong bahay recipes. TOP brought home and comfort to its customers, no matter what the occasion was.

He added that TOP have always existed there to witness the development and growth of the school, even before it earned the title of being “The National Engineering University”. It stood and accompanied BatStateU’s side, sharing stories together throughout the years.

The interviewees both shared the same sentiments on how significant TOP has been in being a rendezvous for endless stories, for every Spartan. As Mr. Quiane said, the dining experience is as if one stepped into the comfort of their own home with a touch of history and culture. Until then, the legacy of The Other Place lives on beyond the embers.

ointing out that offering the K-12 program ended in 2021, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has reminded the State and the Local Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and (LUCs) to discontinue its enforcement. However, ceasing the K-12 implementation opens greater considerable challenges for both the students and the teaching force which will ensure an impulsive effect on the education sector.

Since its implementation in 2012, universities have worked to build the foundation of the Senior High School program and of its students, thus, changing this would mean a massively difficult and immediate transition in the mindset and readiness of the students.

n today’s world, innovative and useful applications litter the hands of many. Whether it may be a child, teenager, or an adult, cutting-edge technologies are put to use as a result of its efficient and remarkable performance. For instance, the world is captivated by rapid advancements including social media, with several users of technology easily logging into the online world with only just their fingertips.

Its use is restricted to a certain age group which implies that individuals below that condition require supervision from their parents in order to obtain an account. However, most of these steps can easily be manipulated, letting the younger individuals create an account even without permission from their legal guardians.

Yet, instructors do their best on opening the minds of young individuals to different online platforms and unpacking the appropriate etiquettes that should be followed.

Moreover, in a study done in 2021 by the Organization Conscious Youth, 55% of people aged 11 to 25 regularly post their opinions; those that are still studying or way too young to be active on the internet. With the rise of the online world, one should not underestimate its lasting impact and the responsibility that comes once users enter the online world.

For instance, competitions or events that occur inside the university often give way for a fierce stance to arise.

Students in the online world can mask their true identity, publishing posts directly harming one another. In spite of this, it is a must to understand that matters cannot be easily solved once brought onto social media.

The online world is a place many would rather avoid as a result of its cons outweighing the great potential it offers. With scams and fabricated outlets, many are at risk to fall into a dangerous path. Addiction to social media is also a common problem that a great amount of people experience.

In the words of Claude Mellins, a Professor of Medical Psychology in the Departments of Psychiatry and Sociomedical Sciences, “Although there are important benefits, social media can also provide platforms for bullying and exclusion, unrealistic expectations about body image and sources of popularity, normalization of risk-taking behaviors, and can be detrimental to mental health.”

Nonetheless, social media poses various advantages for its users such as sites that release credible information which aid individuals in gathering data and a wider reach of audience. Furthermore, it also allows for education to be accessible online from the safety of a student’s home, particularly in the midst of the pandemic.

With several advantages presented by social media, it also has conditions that affect its users.

Regardless of these, there are precautions to follow to avoid the troublesome side of the online word such as adhering to appropriate etiquettes, verification of the information presented, and limiting the use of the online platform.

With the knowledge of these regulations, one’s safety in the online and physical world would be kept.

ver since the beginning of its registration in October 2020, the production and distribution of National Identification cards or National ID has been consistent on its delays as there are still a massive number of cards that are yet to be issued.

In fact, I myself have already registered in 2020, however, it is agreeable that the delay it displays causes a nuisance to the public since aside from this, other concerns such as misspelled names and typographical errors were identified.

It is understandable that printing and distributing copies of National IDs would take a lengthy amount of time, but in today’s community wherein almost all processes are integrated with the emerging technology, it is only reasonable for us to raise concerns regarding its issuance.

Moreover, there have been raised complaints wherein upon the receipt of their National IDs, there were concerns regarding the quality of its print, the typographical errors, the incorrect details, and such.

Although the release of these cards were already delayed, I see it as a supposed period to at least ensure its overall quality and guarantee an errorless output given the sufficient and lengthy span of time it took.

Should We Dance the Cha-Cha? Beneath the supposed progress made, Filipinos continue to rally against the decisions of government officials that directly impact their lives. These relentless protests against the alleged democratic government have eroded the hope many Filipinos have in its leaders. The fact that this is considered standard practice, numerous normalized occasions where the purported leaders have become a menace to the public. It is evident that our current political system exhibits deep-rooted issues, further eroding trust and hope within the government. A charter change has been deemed as the solution to restore the people’s faith in the country’s leaders, which catalyzes a brighter and more progressive future.

Speaking of the charter change, the debate over the proposed change in the Philippines has garnered substantial attention. Proponents and detractors hold differing views on the possible effects of the new constitution, with each side offering compelling arguments and concerns. Charter change, colloquially known as cha-cha introduces revisions to the constitution. The issue of whether the House or the Senate should vote jointly or separately for charter change in Congress remains unresolved, with the Senate insisting on separate voting.

We can also create information, from signing up for websites, filling up forms, putting your number in an online shopping app. These crucial information, sadly, can also be leaked to the public.

Endangering one’s life as every bit of information slipped through the hands of those who are supposed to safekeep it. Recent data leaks inside our government’s branches just always proves that they are always lacking, and we, the citizens, are always at the losing end.

Countless data breaches have been recorded in the country over the years with the largest data leak known as the “Comeleak” of February 2016. This exposed the information of 55 million Filipino voters in a public russian-based website that put their lives at risk. Just last year, a string of breaches attacked the government branches that further exposed classified information. The PhilHealth leak was by the Medusa ransomware that in return asked for a staggering amount of $300,000. While the PNP and NBI leak compromised the police records, passports, identity cards, even birth certificates of 1.5 million people.

Shockingly, it was then revealed that the agencies did not have sufficient protection against these attacks, which further exacerbated the situation.

PhilHealth admitted that their anti-virus software expired at the time of the attack.

Due to these unfortunate events, are we really sure that we can trust the government with our personal information, moreover, our life? Time and time again, these incidents just prove that we are not safe in our own country. That even with the sufficient amounts of budget, they still cannot afford to diligently renew their cyber security services. This just further leads us to the truth that we are under a corrupt and lax government system.

uring the height of Pride Month celebrations, at an improvised bar in Quezon City on June 24, 2023, Pura Luka Vega (pronouns they/them) engaged the crowd while dressed up as Jesus, lip syncing a rock version of “Ama Namin”. In a matter of hours, the video’s views skyrocketed on Twitter (or X), resulting in extreme backlash for the drag queen.

In a short span of time, what started as criticism and bashing quickly morphed into a national and legal issue, accompanied by several criminal charges and even an unjust arrest on October 4.

Clearly, the matter has turned into a case of bigotry packaged under the pretense of religious devotion.

Drag is an art form with origins dating back to Ancient Greece. Typically, it refers to performances or parodies wherein the performer cross-dresses and bends the perceived notions of gender and sexuality. While there are more layers to the discussion of drag, one of the greatest concerns about it is how it is equally frowned upon as it is celebrated.

Perhaps this is one of the primary reasons why Pura Luka Vega (or simply, Luka), who has a long-running gag of being likened to Jesus Christ due to their beard, received an alarming amount of backlash – which even went as severe as death threats. Despite the overlapping schedules, tasks to catch up, I didn’t let it hinder me from participating in the competition. During the training, I concurrently worked on catching up with my academics.

Numerous instances of going without food and going to bed late as the challenges and difficulties mount. Crying in the middle of the night, being unsure what to do first.

Reflecting on those moments, I realize that such feats are possible only when fueled by passion. While I could easily relinquish my grip and refocus solely on academics, my passion compels me to maintain a dual commitment. I am not the only one who has faced such situations; many of us navigate similar challenges.

Students, just like me, are screaming how much attention and effort they dedicate to each task they undertake.

They even sacrifice their own health and happiness at times. Nights with almost no sleep and rest become common, just to fulfill their obligations. Dedication and perseverance became their batteries to move forward despite the non-stop urge to give up and quit — which of course, are not in our vocabulary.

Numerous opportunities are missed due to a lack of time. Many of them have the potential to excel in something, but fear precedes the worry that they won’t be able to perform a task properly. Moreover, there are still students who choose to do what they love while not letting go of their other responsibilities. These are students who can manage their tasks concurrently — students who understand the balance between passion, challenges, and growth.

Time is but a fleeting moment and cannot be reclaimed. Just like opportunities that pass, you may never encounter them again if you don’t try. If you know you can, give it your all. Perhaps, each student is indeed different. The time you have depends on you. There’s nothing wasted in trying. As long as you can, don’t hinder yourself because the opportunity to achieve more than one at a time would be a meaningful one. It’s all about finding your balance!

ess than a month before commencing the second quarterly examinations, Batang IS from various grade levels are once again drowning from compacted discussions, piled-up requirements, and other extracurricular activities. Being a Batang IS means being “mahusay” in all ways and aspects; however, each student has their own breaking point and not everyone can remain resilient in the face of stressful times. The tradition of having a so-called “Hell Week” has been extremely normalized in this institution and its effects on students should be monitored.

Offering a diverse curriculum that encompasses a range of 10 to 12 subjects is undoubtedly ambitious. While this provides students a unique opportunity to explore a range of topics that are not typically covered in other schools, the unintended consequence of this approach is a heightened level of stress for students attempting to adapt despite such extensive academic loads. This goes to question if having this type of curriculum is truly beneficial in the perspective of students.

Aside from dealing with tons of academic requirements, numerous students are also involved in different competitions ranging from quiz bees, sports, and cultural competitions. These extracurricular activities require immense training that consumes time as well as effort. For a Batang IS, juggling multiple responsibilities is a normal occurrence and “Hell Week” eventually turns into a “Hell Year”. Most will argue that these types of students chose to join multiple organizations and various competitions, they weren’t forced to exert these efforts.

But then again, a simple consideration and understanding can go a long way.

When asked about the embodiment of a “Mahusay” na Batang IS, a Grade 12 student stated that it can clearly be seen once a student is faced with lots of requirements and can still handle everything with quality. This same student have also answered, “A maximum of 5 hours pero at the moment ay 3 to 4 hours lang yung tulog ko”, when asked how many hours she normally sleeps due to extensive academic loads. In a separate interview, a 10th-grade student acknowledged that heavy workloads do impact his overall well-being but asserted that it’s a necessary sacrifice for a better future. This highlights not just the ability of a Batang IS to endure stress but also their capacity to excel under fatigue and pressure. Nevertheless, the lingering question persists: is such a degree of stress and burnout essential for fostering the growth of outstanding individuals?

the educational environment is crucial for creating a supportive atmosphere that allows students to thrive both academically and personally.

Additionally, a curriculum that is focused on quantity rather than quality could cause detrimental effects to the learning of the student. In the present context, students often find themselves racing through topics to meet deadlines, leaving little time for deeper comprehension and understanding. A more thoughtful and measured pace of learning could enhance long-term retention of knowledge, ensuring that students are not just learning for exams but for a lifetime.

Furthermore, an overloaded curriculum may inadvertently contribute to educational inequities. Students with varying learning styles, paces, or extracurricular interests may struggle to thrive in an environment that demands a one-size-fits-all approach. This could lead to a scenario where certain students, despite their potential, feel marginalized or overwhelmed, hindering their ability to reach their full academic and personal potential.

Hell week (IS) not for the weak Relentless pursuit of academic excellence at the cost of everything else may lead to a narrow definition of success. As Batangas State University Integrated School continues its mission to mold exemplary individuals, it is essential to reevaluate the methods used to achieve this goal. Success should not be synonymous with enduring extreme stress, sleep deprivation, and sacrificing mental well-being. A holistic education should empower students to excel in all aspects of their lives while prioritizing their overall health and well-being. It is time for the institution to evolve beyond the constraints of “Hell Week” and embrace a more compassionate approach to education.

he last day of the year 2023, most celebrated for the upcoming new year, while those whose livelihood depended on a jeepney drowned in worry as the PUV Modernization Program has commenced. Thousands of traditional jeepneys will cease to operate once their franchise has expired, not given the chance to renew it. Not only would the extinction of jeepneys greatly affect the lives of those who depended on it, but also those who utilize its services. The modernization program of jeepneys might be a great step to sustainability, but by using this ignorant way to solve the problem of pollution, it must be stopped for the sake of the drivers and commuters.

The year 2017 was when the public first heard the news of the “PUV Modernization Program” aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the country.

Its deadline was set to June 30, 2023 but was held back until December 31, 2023 due to the transport strike. Drivers were given almost 6 years to prepare and ready themselves for the phaseout.

Those jeepneys who are deemed fit to “pumasada” can still operate, meanwhile those who aren’t are given a chance to upgrade their jeepneys. This act aims to gradually lead to the extinction of traditional jeepneys, to replace them with more expensive and newer versions.

40% of all transportation trips from the country are by jeepney. Commuters such as employees, and students utilize jeepneys to get around and travel to their destination. With over 9 million people as commuters, this would greatly affect the economy of the country.

As students are also a big part of the commuting population, this could disrupt their daily routines. A Grade 10 from the Integrated School was asked regarding

this matter and briefly stated that they may need to wake up much earlier than before due to less jeepneys but a great number of commuters, especially students like them who follow a strict schedule. Another student from Grade 9 said that “Puno na nga lagi sa jeep, pano pa kaya kapag bawas na yan? Baka di na ako makauwi.”

These AIs have been existing mainly in smartphones for a few years now, with some of the most popular ones being Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Technologies like these have been advancing rapidly, with no signs of slowing down.

If we are able to keep this pace, four or five years from now, asking AI for answers to both personal and academic questions will be the norm. We would be living in a world where we could converse with computers as though they were actual humans whenever, all through the power of modern technology.

Moreover, AI proves promising in taking up jobs that require relatively sharper thinking and immense skill, such as game developing and literature.

This would potentially give people the freedom for leisure, and more jobs aligned with each one’s skill sets.

In the education sector, though teaching is truly an admirable and irreplaceable line of work, it is also true that each teacher has their own limitations, be it in factors like time and energy. There usually will still be work to be done after class hours, and assistance like chatbots may come in to play as back-ups in case the teacher is The LATHE High School

The phaseout of traditional jeepneys is just a step in the PUV Modernization Program of the government. This could be better for our environment as there are less carbon emissions, and more comfortable for both drivers and commuters. But for those who simply can not afford the upgrade, they would eventually lose their only source of income, and will inconvenience commuters.

Jeepneys are one of the top modes of transportation in the country. But with the current modernization program, these might cease to exist. This would cause thousands of Filipinos to lose their only livelihood, also affecting commuters. “Rushing into action, you fail”, you can never expect a good outcome from something that is rushed and isn’t planned right. By considering the circumstances of each and every jeepney driver in the country, the implemented course of action must not continue to be ignorant. The mighty king

With the lack of public transportation available in the country this could lead to inefficiency of transportation for the commuters. With less jeepneys that go through certain routes, it will become much more difficult to get to one place and another.

With less jeepneys, and few modern transportation choices, this would greatly affect its availability. With more commuters than transportation, it would become harder to commute. This would certainly become a hassle for commuters, especially those who follow through certain schedules.

The government must revise this program in order for it to be inclusive for all. Offer loans to drivers that couldn’t afford newer jeepneys. Advise drivers to join companies that would eventually offer them units after their franchise expires. Opt for local designs for modern jeepneys that would be affordable for all rather than foreign vehicles.

In addition, AI can also help enhance security and privacy over the Internet. This could be a possible option for protecting basic personal data, like full names and birthdays, and vulnerable information like one’s IP address or credit card details.

AI may also not be confined to just our mobile devices and computers. In a not so distant future, companies might treat advanced AI as their own product, giving it the ability to control smart appliances through WiFi, like seen in the Samsung Refrigerator. This would be separate from smartphones, thus being able to perform a wide range of tasks. Despite a failed attempt in Samsung’s Galaxy Home, AI households are certainly just waving around the corner – an idea still roaming around the community.

However, with such rapid movements, many people fear that AI might soon overpower humanity, functioning without the need of human intervention at all.

This is also illustrated in science fiction films, an example being one where AI controls humanoid robots that take over the planet.

Nonetheless, the Laws of Robotics written by Isaac Asimov disprove this, as it serves as the baseline in preventing all doomsday scenarios regarding robots and AI. This law states

that: (1) no AI or robot can harm a human, (2) it must obey its owner except when those orders conflict with the First Law, and (3) it must protect itself unless such protection conflicts with the First and Second Law. If ensured that these conditions are applied to all developments with artificial intelligence, our safety as a community and species can be preserved. Ultimately, how AI will function as part of society still lies in the hands of the humans responsible for them.

So long as we ourselves are aware of our limitations, what we fear about an AI-operated future would not come to reality. After all, it is us who create them, us who determine their own limitations.

AI has given light towards a future our ancestors would have never predicted. Sooner rather than later, the world will turn out to be one where AI transforms into humanity’s best friend, and hopefully, not its worst enemy.

So long as we ourselves are aware of our limitations, what we fear about an AIoperated future would not come to reality.

Let the battle begin! Just the first strikes of brittle bone disease, and 14-year-old Zab already feels its agonizing touch. Again and again, different forces have tried to bring him down, yet, with passion and excellence, he blows through every barrier, growing stronger with every passing level.

Zabdiel Jude Lontok was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), a genetic condition causing fragile, malformed bones and affecting 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 live births globally. Also called “brittle bone disease,” this condition causes Zab’s bones to break easily when performing most people’s day-to-day tasks.

Consequently, he is unable to go outside and play with his friends, limiting the extent to which he can socialize.

This forces him to make do with his condition, and challenges him to look at his situation from a different angle.

Despite being born with a physical disadvantage, Zab’s strong will, unwavering perseverance and high ambitions make him a formidable combatant. Using his positive mindset to shine an optimistic light on the battlefield ahead of him, he is driven to the other side, never faltering to destroy the turret of impediment.

CRYSTAL-CLEEAR OPTIMISM “I don’t think about the hardships that come with having my condition,” he says. Admittedly, difficulties do put him to the test, but he regards them as only passing shadows behind the smile that everyone knows and loves. With the help of this approach, he has been able to conquer daily challenges and see a day when he will be able to fully understand his identity and how it affects other people.

He aims to grasp with his own hands a level of selfconfidence that would allow him to stand up for himself and climb to the top without anyone pulling him down.

Quitting is a concept unknown to Zab, exemplified by his several achievements in the past two iterations of the Integrated School Week’s Esports Tournaments, as well as his accomplishments in his academic responsibilities.

A RELIC FOR GAMERRS Since he is not able to participate in physical sports, Zab directed his passion and focus towards gaming. So, from the early age of 3, he has reserved his love for this recreational activity. As one might assume, he did not fail and even became an exceptional gamer in Call of Duty and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

According to Zab, gaming makes him happy and makes him feel as though he is in “another dimension,” – it enables him to meet friends online who share the same interests. More than crossing limits and finding recreation, this hobby helped him discover more about himself and his potential.

Of course, he has used his passion for gaming to build a reputation for himself. Zab has triumphed in the Integrated School Week’s ESports Tournaments: reaching 1st place last 2023 for Call of Duty Mobile and clinching 1st place again this year for Mobile Legends:

Bang Bang. When his fellow IS students see him in the halls, they cannot help but speak of the exceptional skills he has to have to attain such a high accomplishment.

I L LUMINATING INFLUENCESS Zab would not have been the positive character that he is without his nurturing environment. “They supported me all throughout my journey, ever since I was born. They never left me, and they never looked at me differently. I am forever thankful for them. Without them, there wouldn’t be me,” Zab says, talking about his parents. They have become a piece of his identity from the moment he was born, building up the boundarybreaker everyone knows him to be.

Likewise, his school community has become a source of comfort and support as he overcomes the challenges of his condition. His bond with his classmates, whom he considers as family, has substantially developed, having created a community that celebrates each other’s accomplishments and growth. The school faculty has also taken notice of Zab’s personality and holds him in high regard, admiring his resilience and optimism, seeing him as an inspiring individual who has the potential to accomplish great things in his life.

Zabdiel is nothing far from a diamond, casting extraordinary determination and ambition despite having to live every day with brittle bone disease.

He has presented his achievements and received commendations on numerous occasions. His every aspect, from exceptional talent to illuminating confidence, inspires everyone who witnesses what he goes through. Boundaries are redefined not only for him but for those who hear his story.

Among the flurry of students rushing as the first period begins, appears a yawn, a stretch, and a meow.

Cats capture hearts as these felines play a huge part in the Integrated School department. A known home to the mascots: ISmol, IScat, and TigrIS – among these icons belong a real-life resident of the campus, Cindy.

A yawn for attention Emerging from sight, a pregnant stray white cat once roamed the halls of the department. She was always seen asking faculty members for food, until they started to become fond of her.

They also shine as an inspiration for students to face multi levels of adversities that they may encounter.

“They can make people happy and forget their problems for a while. These cats serve as some type of support to students, physically and mentally.” Reigna Hiwatig, a grade 11 student states.

Meows of affection

Though outside of their obligations, Batang IS and Gurong IS alike continue to take care of these felines as part of the IS community, displaying a culture of compassion and creating a safe space for animals, especially strays.

A new, stray, orange cat made her name as a popular resident among both students and faculty – Cindy. She rose to fame when a student gave her a staple belled red collar, which chimed with her every step.

She slowly but surely earned her position in the department’s history, becoming “IScat”. This leads to the orchestration of other significant department icons.

An extending stretch

The department transcends farther than just a Science and Technology based environment, now fostering a secure haven for these cats to purr around and wag their tails with ease; meowing tunes of resonating affection.

IScat’s introduction as the JHS’s own icon also birthed other mascots who would represent the department. Seeming like an older sibling to IScat came “TigrIS” – a tiger born of intuition and bravery to represent the Senior High School department. With only the last piece missing, the heads introduced one final figure for the Grade School, “ISmol”.

“They (mascots) symbolize resilience and hope.

Resilience to recover from different challenges, like ISCat being a stray cat, was able to conquer each passing day.” Mr. Florence Somoria, a part of the department’s

Grade 10 - Integrity shows compassion in their own way, with coming together as a group in order to simply pile up their leftovers to give to the cats for the day, being careful enough as to pick out what’s safe for these felines to eat. “Hindi kasi sila pusa lang eh, like parang tao din sila, kung sa bata naghahanap ng kalinga ng isang magulang. Again these cats have feelings of their own as well,” Lhurix Montalbo a student of the section expressed.

Strutting down in the morning as the students head for homeroom, Cindy bewitches a passerby every now and then to pet her and take pictures, captivating the hearts of the community and making them her very own nest. Cooped up inside their homes, seven individuals have decided to form a bond, connected through a love wavelength for music. Fixing an antique mini radio on the wall, mending the batteries with new ones — lights began to flash, resonating tunes they’ve long heard in the past.

Though tired walking around, you’ll eagerly travel through the whole campus just to search for that special someone. “Saan ka” indicates Maki’s illustration on yearning for a person one had met through several landmarks, longing for their presence.

A journey in the Integrated School meant leaping through several seasons, fFrom late night studies, to research defensesmore hustles, project arrangements, and more hustles. Through these moments, a shoulder theypeople could lay on are songs from the Original Pinoy Music ensemble that have seemed to resonate within the spartan community. Hold on tight to that stereo and travel through different radio IStations.

“No Specific Band Name” or NSBN is a rising band from Batangas that pours their heart into each melody and lyric, dreaming of touching people’s lives and earning their support. With this, the entrance of OPM bands on scene have been specially evident, further inspiring aspiring bands like NSBN to divulge into the journey of music.

With the Integrated School’s return to full face-to-face classes, embracing the “new normal”, several rules also resurfaced, such as the implementation of a firmer dress code. However, though options in schoolwear have significantly narrowed down, there are also areas in the mandate that remain unfilled – allowing students and teachers alike to still live a style fresh from a coming-of-age film, showing the Integrated School community’s spins on the classic red and white.

The Art of Experimentation Walking through the corridors of the LDC building, one would surely notice Grade 12 student Angela Mae Evangelista, who usually rocks highheeled black shoes. “Just like any other kind of base, [uniforms] can be elevated in a variety of ways.” Angela mentions that the key to unlocking her style only involves three steps: a jacket or vest, great accessories, and statement black shoes to wrap it all together.

Furthermore, she also encourages experimentation.

There are several options in enhancing one’s uniform – such as different hairstyles, lovely jewelry (except dangling earrings, which are a nono for the dress code!), and simply having clean shoes. To cap up her guide, Angela emphasizes that with good fashion must also come good hygiene.

Cup of Joe’s lyrical masterpiece transcends way beyond its meaning, giving a vision to the portrayal of several, creative interpretations.

As if trying to heal chaotic thoughts, Healy After Dark released Isip, meant to resonate with individuals confused on what to make out of their multifaceted feelings.

The Coat of Class Eyes on the English teacher dubbed as always looking like he’s in Korea – Mr. Brian Magboo! Addressed by students as Sir Bryce, he mentioned in an interview that the school dress code must be observed at all times, as the school uniform displays the identity of Red Spartans. Meanwhile, he also says that there is nothing wrong with self-expression, as long as decorum and decency are still implemented.

Sir Bryce learned how to style his outfits during his time as a freelance model, practicing layering and only incorporating two to three colors in his get-ups for more attractive and classy looks. Famous for his long coats, Sir Bryce dresses up not only to “look extra”, but also to show a sense of authority, elegance, and professionalism, all while still wearing the endorsed uniforms.

He also shared his “3Cs” – “Wear Class and Confidence in your Core”. Sir Bryce advises that on top of a fashionable aura, it is still important to wear kindness, approachability, gentleness, and respect, earned from the way one carries himself and his style.

The Beauty of Addition Ah, the girl with the pretty headbands, perfect hair, and chic jackets – Alyssa Maurielle De Gracia, a Grade 12 student from the Integrated School. Mau stands firm that though necessary for uniformity, dress codes still must not hinder her fellows from “releasing their individuality and ability to leave a trademark”.

Mau also vouches for an “addition method” when it comes to enhancing one’s school uniforms: matching colorful jackets, jewelry, and hair accessories.

Additionally, she also pushes her peers to find their desired aesthetic or vibe, and match that by wearing fitting pieces of clothing on top of the university’s uniforms.

The Power of Subtlety Moving on, Mr. Marc Simon Brucal, one of the department’s social studies instructors, is certainly someone who’d always get a second look, even in the absence of grand garments. Sir Sai affirms the need of the dress code for several reasons: “It allows teachers to establish a disciplined atmosphere and authority, facilitates easy identification during school

In the bustling streets of the Philippines, a new two-wheeled phenomenon is taking over: e-bikes, or electric bicycles. These eco-warriors on wheels have been heralded as the dawn of a greener, more efficient mode of transportation, gliding silently past their gas-guzzling counterparts. Yet, beneath their sleek, energy-efficient exterior, e-bikes have become the nucleus of an electrifying debate, buzzing with a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism among the Filipino populace.

The voltage of anxiety With the capability to zip through streets at speeds surpassing those of traditional bicycles, e-bikes introduce a new dynamic to the road, one that is fraught with potential hazards. The fear of collisions with pedestrians or traditional vehicles is palpable, amplified by presence of unregistered e-bikes.

A study by the Philippine Institute for Transportation and Logistics (PITL) in 2023 highlighted that 65% of participants harbored safety concerns, pointing to reckless driving and a lack of supportive infrastructure as primary fears.

From the dawn of Catholic influences, Filipinos have been made to accept morals deeply rooted in the religion’s teachings. Hence, due to the Church’s stand against homosexuality, a widespread hold of homophobia can be observed throughout the country. With this belief in the minds of parents who raise children to exhibit morals identical to their own, a conflict may arise in families to which queer children belong.

SUDDENLY DRIFT AWAY

A DESPERATE GRIP A mix of emotions emerges when a parent learns that they are to expect a new member of the family. Swarming thoughts may overwhelm them, but one thing is certain: they will have an addition to their family, and it is their responsibility to make sure they hold on to their children with unconditional love. And to most, that would mean shaping this child into their beliefs, often forgetting to consider that they would grow to form their own identity.

With these beliefs, internalized from Christian ideas, children are taught the sinful and shameful backgrounds of homosexuality. Some families would even call the community a “pest” to society. “Some members of my family do not support the LGBT community because of their religious convictions and because they want a normal life for their children,” says 16-year-old Alex (not her real name).

RISKING A SLIDE In a desperate hold on the love that they receive, those who belong to homophobic families would do all they could to hide their queerness or even flat out turn to denial, suppressing their authentic identities. This may even come from necessity, in fear of harm that may come once they are out.

“The reason I could not come out to the rest of my family is because I can already predict their negative reactions. I am also not ready to face their hurtful words which is why I am still preparing myself to gather the courage to face them when my girlfriend decides to come out,” Alex shared.

However, hiding takes a great amount of effort. When all they are holding inside builds up into something they can no longer deny, there is nothing

The day their identity is finally revealed, it tests the love their family has for them. Some are lucky to still take hold of that love, even strengthening that grip after they are accepted for their authentic identities. Others are not so lucky; their family’s denial, constant catcalling, “praying over”, or even disownment are some of the struggles the LGBTQ+ youth have to face.

Such is 19-year-old Christian’s experience (not his real name). At the age of 14, he was kicked out of his own home by his grandparents for being queer. At such a young age, he was forced to work and live in the house of a woman who had no obligation whatsoever to nourish him but still treated him as her own child.

Stories such as this reflect the experiences of a large population of queer youth who witness the love of their family drift away from their hands right before their eyes. These stories should not be hidden as queer voices like Christian and Alex’s are essential to make thousands if not millions of Filipino families realize the effect of morals rooted in homophobia.

When their family teaches a child to hold onto their love, the child goes to lengths to desperately keep that grip. But at the realization that they are the sinful abomination they have been taught to hate, they must decide whether to risk losing that grip. For some unlucky souls of homophobic families, they would have to witness this hold slide and drift away.

People do not know who to believe or what to make out of the situation as the runway heats up even further.

However, cross-dressers of history had enough power to break through these barriers enabling a thriving environment of modern drag to reach the ultimate goal.

The art form of drag exaggerates feminine or masculine features and is practiced by a diverse set of performers— usually queer—from all around the world.

With an astounding queer population in the Philippines, this art form thrives in the country to this day and is usually performed in bars. As recent drag representation has made its way into Filipino mainstream media through shows—Drag Race Philippines, Drag Den, and even appearances on popular noontime variety shows like It’s Showtime and Eat Bulaga—more Filipinos have grown to love drag despite the country’s homophobic roots. But before all this, drag has long been part of Filipino culture and has raced through years of hills and slumps towards the goal of full inclusivity.

AHEAD OF THE GAME From the start of the track during precolonial times, Filipinos started strong and confident. They exhibited a culture that placed them ahead, close as ever to an inclusive environment. During this period, most Asogs or Baylans, the Filipino male spiritual leaders, dressed in feminine clothing as part of their norms.

The influence of Christianity brought down a barrier of aggressive masculinity and homophobia, blocking the country’s further progression. But, Filipinos, despite this obstacle, only carried on and found more ways to let drag flourish enough to break through this obstructing power.

A TRACK OF OBSTACLES Now with more obstacles than Filipino drag is ought to experience, the finish line only seems to blur. But, iconic queers of history did not see that as a reason to step down. Long before the term “drag” was used, stories of “crossdressers” and “female impersonators” have broken down barriers not only for modern drag artists but also for the Filipino LGBTQ+ community as a whole.

Crispulo Luna, a prominent crossdresser cover girl amidst the height of the American colonization, dressed in various women’s clothing from the baro’t saya to Japanese geisha robes for Victoria Studios, inspiring fellow Filipino crossdressers to share their experiences. He expressed himself with a woman’s heart, and when offered a wife he would reply, “Pero por Dios, babae ako!”

Moving forward to the Second World War, Walterina Markova, a stage performer, endured sexual abuse and violence in a Japanese camp with three friends, mistaken for being real women

Sobra ang kawalaang hiyang ginawa ng mga Hapon dito,” exclaims Markova in an interview for Probe Productions in 2000. Dubbed “comfort gay,” similar to the sexually abused “comfort women,” Markova and his friends escaped two weeks after being trapped in the camp.

Later on, he became a makeup artist, trained Japan-bound entertainers, and resided with other queer seniors in the home for the Golden Gays, a non-profit organization supporting elderly LGBTQ+ individuals. Dolphy then portrayed his story in the 2000 film “Markova: Comfort Gay,” opening the eyes of Filipinos at a time of rare queer representation in the media.

Further progressing Filipino drag down the track, a group of female impersonators, prominently known as the Paper Dolls, stood out in the 1970s as versatile and talented performers. They performed in imitation of some of the most iconic women at the time, such as Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Streisand, and Liza Minnelli to name a few. Although most of them had no background in female impersonation before the group’s formation, that did not stop them from being a highly demanded group of

performers, setting the footprints where modern drag would eventually follow.

GOAL CLOSE AS EVER Filipino drag has come a long way since the days of Pulo, Markova, and the Paper Dolls. Their efforts went beyond colonial barriers, allowing drag artists today to perform beyond bars, showcasing skills in dance, gymnastics, lip-syncing, comedy, and singing. Their world-class talent proves essential in a race towards inclusivity.

Moreover, mainstream shows like Drag Race Philippines and Drag Den provided local drag queens the platform they deserved, giving rising names like Precious Paula Nicole and Marina Summers, among many others, national and international recognition. “I believe that queer artists are finally getting the due recognition that is deserving of them,” shares Drag Den’s season 1 winner, Naia Black in a guest appearance for MEGA Magazine. This groundbreaking exposure shattered stigma and barriers, paving the way for future generations of aspiring drag artists.

For centuries, drag has been running down a track of obstacles brought down by colonization to imprint itself on Filipino culture. With the barrier-breaking power from queer history, drag flourishes today with world-class talent bringing itself closer to the ultimate goal. Just a few changes in the country’s views would make drag a permanent mark on the Philippines’ culture.

Fresh sunshine, calming breezes, and a bright walk to start off the day—maybe a tad bit too bright. Lying under the eyes of the many are advertising boards of numerous products which promise to make you look lighter, yet unknowingly strip you of something which one would deem a precious natural treasure.

With the internet reaching its peak usage during the COVID pandemic, it opened gates to numerous routines, including the usage of skincare products that were quickly adapted by many of its netizens with the fear of missing out.

The dawn’s wash Fresh cold water trickles down as suds from the face wash coats the eyes, somehow a resemblance to playfully choosing to be blinded and shunning something that seems like an elephant in the room.

Ever since people opted to stay at home at the risk of getting COVID, the community seemed to value hygiene over anything else to the point that others used this opportunity to grab their so-called glow ups by throwing their own aesthetics into the mixture.

Who would have thought that a country, so intimately embraced by the warmth of the sun and the gentle glow of its golden rays, would choose to shun its very essence, retreating into the shadows and obscuring itself from the luminous blessing bestowed upon it, such irony it shreds.

As parts of the Filipino community continue to glorify themselves with a skincare routine to get whiter and whiter, its foundation rooted from a colonial mindset will always shroud itself to be darker and darker.

Being overly excited towards something seemingly “just normal”. OA. Crying about the most minute occurrence.

OA. Getting mad over the smallest stray from the plan. OA. The world around you turns incessantly, looking down upon you, and you cannot help but continue to falter at the graze of the littlest shards.

Among the recent trends and puns running loose on social media is the phrase “c OA”, literally from the term “overreacting”, which is used to mock someone for reacting excessively towards something. However, apart from its lighthearted nature, this phrase is also used to pull people down for a simple human feeling: caring a lot.

Cast upon Soldiers In an online article published by boundaries.com, Dr. Henry Cloud explains that overreactions ako emotional responses experienced by an individual when triggered by certain circumstances.

Princess (not her real name), a Grade 12 student from Batangas State University Integrated School, recounted that she became “OA” on one particular Monday during their new semester. “Most memorable ‘yong breakdown ko after hindi makaabot sa flag ceremony, kasi we had an agreement [with our teacher] na may extra point kapag perfect attendance ka, eh super gusto kong ma-achieve ‘yong point na ‘yon kasi as someone na nahihirapan sa isang subject, malaking tulong siya.” the student said in interview.

Though arriving only a few minutes late is deemed to be a laughable or insignificant matter to some, the same cannot be said on Princess’s behalf.

While they all carried the same weight of wanting – and needing – to arrive early on Mondays, the load differed when she was the one to carry it. Because she had to carry several other weights upon her shoulders, such as academic pressure, hence an observable varied reaction among Eulah and her peers.

Furthermore, she sees that being “OA” also has its varied effects on people: it allows people to vent out their frustrations and release pent up emotions. However, it can also sometimes be draining due to the negative connotations other people attach to it.

Each situation warrants a d i f f e r e n t reaction, and being “OA” is simply a reaction based on how a person takes in a certain event. Princess encourages understanding instead of prejudice and mockery, since the story behind how one reacts to experiences is not always an open book to the public.

It is suggested that both ends pause and take a breath.

Understand the situation, and understand the person’s motivations first before making any remarks or taking any steps.

From Princess’s story alone, overreacting perhaps could not entirely be negative. It is a product of the storms braved and the mountains climbed, as well as a fear for the large wave yet to come.

The youth today commonly encounter the statement “ay si OA”, which they continue to reclaim from being called irrational. These young hearts continue to battle everyday, with their emotions fleshed out, dauntless enough to voice out their true emotions. Many say this is not a display of cowardice, but rather of valiance: courage to lead with one’s heart and care deeply.

hough the sun is a large essential for functions on Earth, it is equally fearsome and dangerous.

This is observable every 11 years, when solar activity reaches its peak in the cycle. Solar flares erupt on its surface, releasing massive amounts of radiation, potentially harming the planet.

Historically, there are two times that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) reached the Earth, and experts have raised the alarm for a third time happening in 2024 – one that would shake one of the globe’s largest foundations: the Internet.

“It’s the first time in human history that there’s been an intersection of increased solar activity with our dependence on the internet and our global economic dependence on the internet.” stated Professor Peter Becker of George Mason University, the lead investigator in the development of early warning systems for solar flares, in a FOX Weather report.

Yesterday’s Blasts The last time a CME reached the Earth was during the Carrington Event in 1859. At the time, the blasts sparked the telegraph systems and electrocuted some operators with high voltage.

Prior to the Carrington Event, another Giant Solar Superstorm is recorded to have taken place 14,000 years ago. The emissions during this ancient time are said to have been hundreds of times stronger than its successor.

Tomorrow’s Worries With the continuous 11-year solar cycles, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts the current one to escalate and reach its summit in 2024.

Similar to weather forecasts, NOAA is still uncertain, stating that there is a 10% chance that a CME arrives on Earth in the next decade. Despite this uncertainty, they call for major measures to protect the Internet, as it is the most vulnerable for the possible solar superstorm of 2024.

nown for being one of the dirtiest rivers in the Philippines, the Pasig River gained popularity in its decline due to heaps of water pollution that the community it had once served inflicted upon it.

Water pollution is one of the most basic forms of pollution that happens on a day to day basis as it is the contamination of bodies of water most likely as a result of human activities.

These include when foreign objects such as chemicals are spilled into a body of water; a common manifestation of this in the community is poor sewage and wastewater treatment.

Furthermore, this development project program includes the establishment of two new Pasig River Ferry service (PRFs) stations in both Manila and Pasig. This is essentially a water bus service for the people to use, standing as the only water-based transportation in Metro Manila, and offering free ride services utilizing its annual budget of Php 72 million.

n the television screen, players battle for a single shot, the crowd goes wild, and during a quick break, an unfamiliar figure appears. By taking the names Maia and Marco, artificial intelligence (AI) commences in taking up space in the media, sparking a new query for the industry as a whole: by occupying space, what space would be left for actual humans in the future?

As the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) commenced its 99th season on September 24, 2023, GMA Network debuted Maia and Marco, artificial intelligence-generated sportscasters – a first for the Philippines.

On the rise in the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) is an advanced technology rampant nowadays.

According to Britannica, it can “perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings.” AI possesses high processing speeds, as well as the ability to replace human interference and actions.

Venturing the Cosmos: James Webb Space Telescope opens doors for astronomy via Nathanael Calayan

n December 25 2021, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched the Ariane 5 rocket that carried the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which was released into the solar orbit for the conduction of infrared astronomy.

JWST’s main objective is to search for the first astronomical bodies, like the stars and galaxies, understand their formation, and look for clues on the origin of life.

Its main telescope is composed of three main mirrors in an anastigmat formation, which minimizes all three largest optical setbacks, spherical aberration, coma, and astigmatism.

In addition, JWST also houses different transponders, a mix between transmitters and responders, responsible for sending info back to Earth.

The JWST is an orbiting infrared observatory expected to last twenty years, and complement and solidify the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, built in with its most crucial feature: wider light wavelength coverage.

This wider range enables it to look much closer at the beginning of time, and to hunt for the unobserved formation of the first galaxies, as well as to look inside dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are forming today.

Today, the James Webb Space Telescope is located 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth, at a point in outer space known as the L2 Lagrange point, where it remains seemingly afloat, with reduced fuel consumption.

Moreover, JWST captures crisp patches of different astronomical objects at higher speeds compared to Hubble.

A clear example are the first Deep Field photos taken: while Hubble spent 10 days with full focus, JWST only spent 12.5 hours to capture the same type of image.

At its current location, the telescope is far enough from the heat emitted by the Earth to capture the needed quality for its images.

Some of the telescope’s notable discoveries as of writing include observation of the earliest black holes and their properties, progress in understanding star formations, and findings regarding potential alien life on certain planets.

LDSee: A Glimpse into the Labs within the LDC Building

T

he Batangas State University - The National Engineering University has been evolving over the years. Proof of this is one of its more recent additions, the Learning Development Center Building, otherwise known as the LDC. This building houses five laboratories that push the learning capabilities of students to an all-time high, specifically built for honing different STEM-related skills.

During his speech at the Inauguration Ceremony on September 28, 2022, Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo stated: “We are investing in our youth because we believe that in this investment, we shall reap. In this battle, where we are now entering into a new revolution– that is industrial revolution; and no longer a revolution of the old, [those] were days that we [fought] for justice or injustice, now the revolution is only for industrial revolution. This investment for our Learning Development Center and more facilities to come is meant toward developing you, our high school students, on [the] STEM track.”

The Tech Trio On the first floor of the LDC Building, the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) and the Robotics Laboratory (RobLab) are what greet the Integrated School community upon arrival. Furthermore, jumping two storeys up are the two Computer Laboratories (CompLabs), which allows for hands-on activities in the concerned subject.

When in need of 3D-printed models for research paper or competition purposes, one would only need to go to the FabLab, which houses Adventure 4 3D printers. These printers are capable of holding a kilogram’s worth of roll filament, and printing a layer every six minutes or so, depending on the complexity and size of the figure.

Journeying to the left part of the ground floor, a similarly structured laboratory with the same hexagonal tables welcomes students during their Robotics lessons – which have now become incredibly advanced compared to yesteryears. Within the RobLab’s doors are LEGO robotic parts, some of which are programmable, through systems such as EV3 and SPIKE. Furthermore, the department’s all-new CompLabs now contain Xitrix desktop computers, capable of catering a whole class during lessons. This makes way for easier application of what they learn in the classroom, an advancement

from a former limitation IS used to face: the unavailability of computers for students.

The Science Pair Also on the third floor are two laboratories built for IS’ commitment to STEM, particularly Science. These are the Biochemistry and Physics Laboratories, which allow for High School students to gain practical and in-depth knowledge of the specific subjects.

From beakers to flasks, from burners to microscopes, the two Science laboratories have almost anything one will need to perform experiments. Through these, they can look at the nucleus of their own cells, observe the reactions of certain chemicals with one another, and manipulate props to distinguish concepts like density and velocity.

Further, these laboratories also allow students to find a place for their STEMrelated endeavors. The technologicallyinclined laboratories are equipped with gadgets and devices, while the Science-

PURSUIT. IS-HS students utilize the laboratory facilities at the Learning Development Center (LDC) Building in preparation for their respective competitions and research experiments. The LDC was first opened on September 28, 2022, and has been in use for STEM-related activities since.

All in all, the Learning Development Center observably lives up to its name; it is a place of exploring endless possibilities, whether it be through computer codes or chemical compounds. Introducing five laboratories and five new classrooms, the LDC serves as the symbol of Batangas State University’s commitment to producing students who will soon lead innovations, transform lives, and build the nation.

Through the LDC, the Batang IS are provided places for gearing up towards a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) future aimed by the Integrated School.

With the recently held test launch, it partially fulfilled its mission as it accomplished hot staging, which refers to

the separation of the main rocket from its heavy engine in order to get the ship on its way as well as to produce more data.

64 seconds after its launch, Starship reached 10 kilometers which is equivalent to about 91 football stadiums, an extremely fast speed suitable for space travel.

The test launch ended nine minutes later with the rocket reaching its highest speed, 24,124 km/h, before losing connection with the Michigan Control Center at Hawthorne.

After receiving the final bits of data, a reporter from SpaceX stated that, “We’re gonna figure out how to fix it”, referring to the booster which imploded after 3 minutes and 20 seconds of Starship’s launch all the while fulfilling its duty.

STEM Days and IS Week Basketball, IS-HS clashes in fast-paced Basketball Showdowns

T

he senior high school students commenced with their Basketball Boys elimination round on January 10, the third day of STEM Days 2024, while the junior high school basketball competition started on January 11. Both were held at the Gov. Feliciano “Sanoy” Leviste Memorial Multi-Purpose Gymnasium.

The Wild Azure Wyvern faced off against the Whimsical Red Huxians in the elimination game of the tournament, with the Huxians running away with the victory, 48-36.

In the second game, the Wyverns matched up with the Vicious Viridian Leviathans, and in a game where defense mattered the most, the Leviathans eventually captured the win, 42-51, ending the Wyvern’s run for second.

The Huxians and the Leviathans met in the third and final game of Day 3, where the Leviathans came out with an early lead and never looked back. The game ended in a blowout, favoring the Leviathans, 57-43.

This set the stage for a twice-to-beat advantage for VVL on Day 4, as both teams fiercely exchanged their best efforts. The game’s momentum shifted dynamically with several lead alterations, but in the 4th quarter, the Leviathans took control and prevailed, securing a 63-56 win over the Huxians.

During the championship game, VVL’s Charlz Kenhedie Maliglig recorded 41 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists, which earned him the Most Valuable Player award of the tournament.

On Day 4 of IS Week 2024, the junior high school basketball tournament kicked off with The Scorching Sangrian Kitsunes facing off the Imperial Blue Griffins, and

the former securing a 39-32 victory by maintaining their lead from halftime to the end.

The Kitsunes returned to action in the second game, this time against the Dauntless Jade Hydras. Hydras controlled this match all throughout to steal the spotlight, ending with 39-26.

In the final game that would decide the champions, it was the Dauntless Jade Hydras squaring off against the Imperial Blue Griffins. Both teams went back and forth, neither team wanting to go home with a loss. In the deciding fourth quarter, however, the Hydras made some clutch buckets to pull them over the edge, eventually winning 37-33.

The Dauntless Jade Hydras were ultimately crowned IS Week 2024 basketball champions, with Homer Alexis

being crowned the MVP of the junior high school basketball tourney, dropping an astonishing 28 points, 2 assists, 1 rebounds, and 4 steals.

ntegrated School - High School students showcased their skills in Chess, as part of the IS Week and STEM Days celebrations on January 8 to 12, 2024. Each of the teams in their respective departments went on to battle each other in this game of wits.

Senior high school students first clashed on the second day of STEM Days 2024, January 9.

The Whimsical Red Huxian, Wild Azure Wyvern, and Vicious Viridian Leviathans were all represented by two participants each, one from Grade 11 and one from Grade 12.

Participants of the three teams fought each other with all their might by performing effective openings, constructing solid positions, countering oppositions, and forcing enemies to perform a blunder.

After two hours, Whimsical Red Huxian’s Joaquin Bernard Matibag managed to notch first place with a record of four wins, followed

by Samuel Patrick Eje of the same team with three wins and one draw, giving him the second place, and lastly, Henrikson Banaag of the Wild Azure Wyvern with three wins, earning the third place of the contest.

Meanwhile, the junior high league followed on the third day of IS Week 2024. Silence and focus, students exchanged intense attacks for the check.

With that, Qiannah Beatrice Felipe of the Hydras earned the first place in the girls’ division

with six wins, followed by second-place Hannah of the Griffins with four wins, and lastly, Yra Lyzyth Magboo of the Hydras with three wins, capturing the third place.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ division, Rhys Markus Calanog, also from Hydras, managed to notch the top spot with five wins, followed

by Francis Rey Layesa and Nathaniel Calayan, both from the Kitsunes, who tied for second place with three wins, and lastly, Zacharie Zummer Garcia from Hydras with two wins.

“I have to say it was a fair game for all players, as their skills are far beyond what I can imagine. It was fun to have a challenge against great people who have their minds set on chess considering I’m the only female player there; they played fairly and equally against me.” Maria Charlene Kaye Guhit, a Chess player of the Vicious Viridian Leviathans, offered comments on her opponents’ efforts.

fter weeks of training and preparations, the Batangas State University Integrated School Varsity team, led by their head coach Mr. Regie Caguimbal, participated in the Batangas City InterHigh School Basketball Tournament which had its opening ceremony on November 7, 2023, at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum.

For their first game, the BatStateU Red Spartans matched up with the Batangas Christian School Blue Lions, bowing down with a score of 39-100, in favor of the latter.

The Red Spartans bounced back in the next game, facing Sta. Rita National High School in an intense duel and eventually winning the game, 87-83.

In their third game, played at the University of Batangas Gymnasium, the Red Spartans fell short against AMA Batangas HS, losing by only four points.

This trend continued in the next game as they fell to Saint Bridget College by a large margin; however, hope filled the team as they bounced back in the following game against Libjo National High School, defeating them 61-51.

A minor setback occurred as they would struggle and fall short against UB. They soon dominated AMA Computer Learning Center in the next game, 6253.

The varsity team returned to action on January 13, 2024, facing off with Stonyhurst Southville International School Knights, but losing in yet another tight game.

During their game against Golden Gate Colleges, Team Captain Charlz Kenhedie Maliglig was listed out due to The LATHE High School

sudden illness, resulting in yet another loss for the Red Spartans.

As of January 15, 2024, the BatStateU Red Spartans’ record stands at 3 wins and 6 losses (3-6). More games will be played in January as they keep their championship hopes alive.

In an interview, Maliglig said that he motivates each of his teammates by reminding them of their reasons for playing, as well as their personal and group aspirations. He also noted

that they continue to focus on positive reinforcement and team unity, as well as highlight each player’s strengths, and set achievable goals, on top of harnessing other qualities necessary to encourage collaboration.

“Encourage open communication, address concerns, and foster a supportive environment. Implement strategic practices to improve skills and emphasize learning from losses.

Remind the team of past successes and express confidence in their potential to turn the season around.”

he Batangas State University - Pablo Borbon Campus’s Covered Court hosted a thrilling volleyball match between the Imperial Blue Griffins (IBG) and the Scorching Sangrian Kitsunes (SSK) during Integrated School Week 2024.

The teams displayed their abilities and sportsmanship in the match. The players’ unparalleled athleticism and impressive skill ignited the court. As the crowd roared and cheered as they celebrated IS Week 2024.

In the opening game of the boys’ division, the Kitsunes and Griffins faced off, and the red team prevailed 40– 35, securing their supremacy for the competition. Moreover The Hydras (DJH) took out IBG in the second game by a slim margin of 42-40, establishing themselves as strong competitors.

The Kitsunes then triumphed against Hydras in the boys’ division game to take first place with a total score of 40-34.

Afterwards IBG then defeated SSK to start the girls’ division with a final score of 4037.

With a 15-point advantage, they defeated the Dauntless Jade Hydras to continue their winning streak. In addition,

the Kitsunes won silver after defeating Hydras with 40–32.

The Griffins and Kitsunes left a lasting legacy of skill, sportsmanship, and dedication in the successful volleyball competition held during IS Week 2024.

At the STEM Days 2024 event, senior high school students also displayed skill and teamwork in the same sport as the Whimsical Red Huxian, Wild Azure Wyvern, and Vicious Viridian Leviathans collided with each other.

The Huxians and Wyverns teams showed off their outstanding skill and talent in their first game, which the Huxians ultimately won 40-22. Despite the

Wild Azure Wyverns’ best efforts to pull off an upset in the second set, the Vicious Viridian Leviathans went on to win the second game.

After defeating the Huxians 31–40 in their first encounter, the Leviathans took on the Wyverns 26–40 to win the game and earn a twice-to-beat position for the championship match.

At the STEM Days 2024 Volleyball Championship, Huxians faced the pressure of defeating Leviathans twice. Despite this, Leviathans managed to win with a 50-30 score, taking the title of champions.

he Filipino boxing team won four gold medals and first place in their weight classes at the 2024 Boxam Elite Tournament in La Nucia, Spain, showcasing their exceptional abilities and dedication to greatness, showcasing their pride in representing their nation abroad.

gile arms and quick reaction time are simple characteristics of a third baseman. ThIs however, has been Ken’s weapon for the majority of his career, even taking him to the national stage. With his enthusiasm and love for softball, nothing is impossible for John Ken Angelo Caringal, an emerging star athlete in the proud city of Batangas.

In his 23 years, one of Ken’s biggest dreams came forth as he managed to secure a position in the Philippine Softball Team (BLUBOYS) roster while pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education as a 4th year student in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

The baseman, a dedicated Batangueno, became the first Batangueno to join the National Softball Team, gaining recognition from Batangas City’s Palakat Official Facebook Page and Mayor Beverly Dimacuha.

Alangilan, Ken has dedicated half of his life to his fiercely competitive passion through his grandfather and brother, who have been active players of the sport. From playing baseball since he was in third grade, to

transitioning into softball in fifth grade, he has spent 15 years honing and devoted himself to the hot corner.

“Sa almost 2 months ko ngayon sa national team okay naman. Mabait naman ‘yong mga teammates and coaches.

‘Yong training kaya naman. May mga adjustments and bagong skills and designated playing style sa bawat isa, which is good para mas lalo maggrow and maging effective and makapag-contribute [nang] maayos sa team.” Ken said in a recent interview.

In July 2023, he was named the MVP of the Men’s Softball Tournament of the 33rd State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) NCR, leading the PUP Radicals to a 6-peat record.

His wins in life did not stop there as the NCR Baseball team clinched the golden podium in the 2023 National SCUAA last October held in Tarlac City.

Coming from a family of softball players, Ken has dedicated blood, sweat, and tears aiming for his top dream, allotting his four years of college life with the PUP Radicals, before eventually transferring to the BLUBOYS last January.

“Actually sobrang hirap lalo na nasa isang kilalang university ka sa Manila. Mahirap ang pag-aaral doon, almost walang pahinga, pasok sa umaga and then training sa hapon tapos klase ulit sa gabi.

Wag nang pag-aksayahan ng oras ‘yong wala namang kabuluhan sa sarili. Basta kung ano ‘yong ginagampanan mo as a student athlete ‘yon lang muna yung focus.” Ken advised.

He scored 45 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, and a game-changing block. Maliglig described the game as the greatest he had ever played, earning him the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP), solidifying his status as one of the top athletes in the tournament.

When I’m tired, I always tell myself that ‘This is for your dreams and goals as a player, so keep going. And simply the love for the game also motivates me to keep going and play the sports I love because I haven’t proven anything yet.’ As a player, I want to be the best. I also want to have a good basketball career. As a varsity here at BSU, I want to give my team a championship title. I hope that all of my goals are for myself and for my team work.” Maliglig shared.
