Urban museum in berlin

Urban museum in berlin city The project was to design an urban museum in the museum island of Berlin. The site is located in an area with very high potentials, as it’s located between Bode museum, the cultural center, the S-bahn and it overlooks the spree river. The people flow in the area is very high which makes the site an attraction to the people. The concept is collect the shattered history which is represented in art from allover europe and make it settle in the museum. While Paintings and sculptures emphasize history, our museum with its linear modular block is the link between past and present. This link is clear through the used material, transparency and voids. Moreover, the use of monolithic concrete has projected the solidity of history which been always any culture’s background.

light fixture-Grasshopper

Parametric lamp The aim of this project was to design a light fixture and fabricate it using parametric design. Grasshopper program was used in this process. The first step was to draw the surface or the shape using both rhino and grasshopper. After reaching the final form, the next step was the triangulation. The shape is divided into several units of triangles which are hollow from the center to give certain light effects. The final step was the fabrication, using the grasshopper we made a numbering which allows us to put the pieces together when it comes to fabrication. The final model was made and light was fixed to it to have the light fixture.

CAIRO CENTRAL LIBRARY

Downtown is a very live and dense area, the district where the site lies is very special. The Site is located in an area where the waterfront and its high rise buildings meet the old downtown city fabric. It also lies in an area that witnessed the 25th of January revolution, a revolution that changed the lives of many people and took the country to experience a new era of democracy. The site is considered a part of the revolution and the changes that happened during it as it is located at the place of the former NDP which was burnt down to the ground during the revolution.

Looking to all the major events that took place in the area, the site has many potentials to build a new library in the center of Cairo. This library can be the minaret of the area, it can be the light to guide people after such a great revolution. Due to its special location, the library can also be a connection of the waterfront and the city. The library needs be a public space to give the people the sense belonging they miss nowadays. It also needs to be transparent to make people feel that they are a part of what is happening on the inside in contrast to the NDP which was bulky and solid.

The design of the library tells the story of the revolution, it narrates how people gathered and moved together and how a new era of light and democracy evolved from that. The library tower represents the new era, with its axis that overlook all the places that were of a siginificant importance during the revolution. The transparency of the library also makes people feel sense of belonging as they feel connected to the inside in contrast to the former NDP which was solid and bulky.

This analysis shows the flow of people around El-tahrir square during the time of the revolution. The square which is considered the symbol of the revolution was always the The old downtown buildings which represent the city

The site is located in downtown area, where the city fabric meets the waterfront. This area can be divided into many layers.

center that people gathered around and then started moving. The flow of people around the square changed according to the events taking place during that time. Somedays people where everywhere, around the square, in the streets and on the bridges and at other days people were only gathering around the square or the streets only. The three diagrams show the three cases of the flow of people.

The concept is to achieve transparency in the building as it was one of the people‘s demands during the 25th of January revolution. There is a five meter void which expands differently through the floors. In some floors the axis of the revolution create the void.

The task of this design studio was to work on the unseen Cairo. Cairo is a dense important city that went through a lot of changes. Layers of Cairo have been buried under eachother with every change, some of these layers are not seen by the people anymore. The inaccessible city is one of the unseen layers. These analysis show how the city is inaccessible and how the main system of the city failed and became inaccessible and it was replaced by a secondary one. In this project we chose to work on the area of nasr city as it is a middle class area. asr city’s failure of the paradigm ‘car city’ led to the inversion of the main pattern into a secondary one. the secondary system became more dominant and it took the role of the primary system. most of the services are now located within the secondary system, making it more attractive to people to use.

Questions: - Do you usually use the primary or the secondary streets? - Where do you usually go in Nasr City? - What are the problems that you face in Nasr City and how do you think we can overcome them? - Where do you park you car and is it easy to find and parking spot?

- She uses secondary roads more often. - Only goes to friend’s house or city stars due to lack of good public spaces. - Traffic jam, one way streets, informal transportation (Microbuses). She suggests implementing more efficient transportation systems. - Finds parking spaces easily around her house but hardly anywhere else.

- Mostly uses secondary streets for faster routes. - Cafe, a friend’s shop, dogs’s vet and pet shop. - Traffic, Mostafa El Nahas being the main issue. He suggests prohibiting parking in Mostafa El Nahas, creating underground parking and removing the bus lanes. - He lives in a family house so they park on their sidewalks.

- During rush hours uses secondary roads but uses the primary roads to exit Nasr City. - Prefers to escape Nasr City. - Parking, garbage, traffic jam. He thinks new projects should be done to decrease Nasr City’s density. - Usually parks in a second lane as he it’s very hard to find parking spaces around his house.

- He lives in Mostafa El-Nahas so he is forced to use it but other than that uses secondary streets. - A cafe at the other end of Mostafa El Nahas from his house but it takes him 20 minutes instead of 5. - High density and the suffocating feeling caused by high-rise buildings and narrow

- Mostly secondary roads. - City Stars. It takes him 30 minutes to reach it even though it is one street away. - No sidewalks, microbuses, parking spaces. He suggests enhancing the sidewalks and creating pedestrian bridges for crossing the streets. - Very hard to find a parking space near his house.

ALEXANDRIA DIALOGS . INVESTIGATING THE CO-CITY

life within the pockets The design targets the neglected neighborhoods of Alexandria and their development. This project focuses on the neigborhood of Karmouz. Karmouz is located in the west district of Alexandria. It is a local neighborhood with many important heritage sites. It also accomodates one of the most important markets in alexandria which is the clock market. As a result of studying the urban pattern of karmouz and the urban surroundings, it was found that karmouz’s most powerful feature is the urban pockets. We started to integrate these pockets into our design trying to give them a unique character and creating a new lifestyle within these pockets.

El gomohoreyya street: AN EDGE OR A SPINE? AL Gomhoreyya street, located at the edge of khedival Downtown Cairo witnessed the unfolding of events that manifested itself in carving the path. Geopolitially, it is located between two main squares in the city, Abdeen palace representing the Monarchy’s exclusive power and Mahtet Masr railway station representing people’s power in numbers flowing from all over the country. Al Gomhoreyya street also represents a spine of the nation-state after decolonozation in the 1950s. Its diverse activities exhibit a city unsettled with monotony, showing spatial disparity from the walls of the palace and Cairo’s Governate to people’s unstructured spaces, workshops, commercial displays and different transportation methods. The in-between pockets around buildings create an additional ad-hoc layer of urban fingers with sub-activities. In hindsight, this workshop spots the light on a forgotten axis of historic weight at the conjunction between the 1865 new quarters of Azbakeya and Ismaileya that needs to be generated. In this workshop we worked on developing and regenrating the forgotten spine. We worked on developing the street through the development of its elements and we used the method of Discover, react and interact. Elements are enhanced and worked on to change the current situation of the whole street.
