THE POEM This week I was assigned a poem in a language I can’t understand. The challange was to take the poem and visually translate it through drawings. The poem was written in a Russian language. The letterforms look strong and powerful on paper. There were unusual letters that I was unfamiliar with. Upon closer inspection of these unfamiliar individual characters, I saw delicate and unique forms. I tried to imagine the meaning of the poem and also tried focusing on the letterforms while I was interpreting my visual and emotional response.

EXPLORATION | PART 1 From the selected poem, I created a visual and artistic interpretation from the letterforms. Of these drawings, I selected a few of my concepts. These concepts were created using ink, pen and marker. In further research of these concepts, I explored some Russian literature and found that they famously probe the depths of the human soul. Because of this, I tried to stretch my imagination further to come up with interesting visuals that reflect the depth of the human soul. In addition to my interpreter drawings I was assigned to construct a three-dimensional version of these drawings. My keywords are chaos, inwardness and darkness.

EXPLORATION | PART 2 This week I explored another form of translation. I started creating imagery using the Russian poem, but later found myself using a traditional Japanese aesthetic inspired by the Wabi-Sabi's seven principles for changing your perception. These principles, (listed below) explore simple imagery using only black and white. Fukinsei: asymmetry, irregularity; Kanso: simplicity; Koko: basic, weathered; Shizen: without pretense, natural; Yugen: subtly profound grace, not obvious; Datsuzoku: unbounded by convention, free; Seijaku: tranquility. Nothing Lasts! Nothing is Finished! Nothing is Perfect!

TRANSLATION | PART 1 This week I received the English translation for my poem. After my previous explorations, the English translation of the poem was provided in order to clarify and possibly give new direction for future explorations. It was interesting to see how the concept in my drawings and 3D model related to the English translation. The poem, “25 Music for Oneself� was written by Vladimir Kornilov and shared my ideas of darker imagery and the depths of the human soul. The poem explores jazz and blues, which to me immediately made me think about the origin of this type of music. Because jazz was created out of dark times, it brought beauty out of sadness.

TRANSLATION | PART 2 This week I thought about all of my explorations what they could lead to. I have decided to create a packaging system based on all of my processes and explorations. I designed a caviar packaging from Russia. Below are my first design explorations, which will be further explored and refined in the upcoming weeks.

REFINEMENT Nepolnota is a Russian Caviar brand that I created, which means “irregularity” in Russian, which was inspired by Japanese aesthetic principles. It is a interpretation to the Russian literary critic, Vladimir Kornivol, and his poem “25 Music for Oneself”. Vladimir talks about purity, modesty and clarity in his poem, which inspired me to use the Wabi–Sabi aesthetic principles. These concepts are expressed in a plain, simple and natural manner using asymmetry and irregularity. In Wabi–Sabi brush paintings, they are often drawn as an incomplete circles, symbolizing the imperfection that is part of existence. In graphic design, asymmetrical balance is a dynamic and beautiful thing, as well. Nature itself is full of beautiful and harmonious relationships that are asymmetrical yet balanced. This is a dynamic beauty that attracts and engages. The packaging of my product represents these ideas and becomes a visual translation of it. The name, “Nepolnota” comes from this philosophy. It means “irregularity”in Russian and “Fukinsei” in Japanese. Some of my previous explorations speak to this idea of irregularity. I won't use every single visual, but I created enough to produce a visual system for my fictitious brand. The visuals represent irregular ocean waves in an elegant and simplistic way, using the concept of nature containing beauty in it's imperfections.
