2009 to 1998 Comparing Campuses Posters

2009

Comparing Campuses Anyone who has visited any of the great college and university campuses has a visceral understanding of the scale and proportion that makes open space memorable. While we are able to recall individual elements of a campus, it is difficult to mentally compare the proportions or scale of an entire campus without graphic tools. We have assembled this collection as a tool for other college and university planners in the belief that shared memories and understanding of existing great spaces will lead to the creation of even better spaces in which to live and learn in the future. Our 2009 poster adds eleven more examples to our collection of college and university campus plans. This year’s poster represents a cross section of large and small; public and private; and urban, suburban, and rural institutions. Visit our website at www.asg-architects.com to compare our collection of one hundred ninety-two campuses side-by-side.

Our 2004 poster adds eleven more examples to our collection of college and university campus plans. This year’s poster represents a cross section of large and small; public and private; and urban, suburban, and rural institutions. Visit our website at www.asg-architects.com to compare our collection of one hundred and forty-two campuses side-by-side.

COLLEGE TOWNS As integral to one’s college experience as the major chosen, is the community, physical environment, and character of the place in which the student learns. Adjacent to most institutions small commercial districts ofton evolve to meet the needs of students and faculty. These districts mature into endearing places that help define a student’s college expereince and provide the backdrop for some of their fondest memories. Many times, it is the first destination for an alumnus upon return. Complimenting the academic community and developing a life of their own, these places often become as important to a university’s reputation as the courses of study offered and the accomplishments of its graduates. To better understand what makes these districts rich and so vital, and how they relate to and support their adjacent institutions, we have conducted this comparison of college towns. The diagrams and statistics below are a portion of our larger Comparing College Towns study. The circle overlaid on the plan represents a 1/2 mile diameter. 0

2002 COMPARING CAMPUSES Anyone who has visited any of the great college and university campuses has a visceral understanding of the scale and proportion that makes open space memorable. Our 2002 poster adds twenty-two more examples to our collection of college and university campus plans. This year’s poster represents a cross section of large and small; public and private; and urban, suburban, and rural institutions. Visit our website at www.asg-architects.com to compare our collection of one hundred and nine campuses side-by-side.

Our 1999 poster adds twenty-one more examples to our collection of college and university campus plans. This year’s poster represents a cross section of large and small; public and private; and urban, suburban, and rural institutions. Visit our website at www.asg-architects.com to compare our collection of forty-three campuses side-by-side.
