COMPARING CAMPUSES Student Housing Housing plays an important role in the maturation of college students from the moment they first arrive on campus to the day they graduate. As students transition through their college experience, a variety of campus housing typologies are designed to align with their needs. The residential experience schools create greatly contributes to the university’s identity and strengthens recruitment and retention. Our 2018 poster compares on-campus housing typologies, densities, and distributions across ten campuses. Each map highlights campus-owned housing facilities color coded by the dominant unit type. A series of scaled, overlaid circles represent the number of beds within each building. In some cases, we grouped a series of buildings with relatively small bed counts. For 20 years, Ayers Saint Gross has gathered broad data on the physical characteristics of campuses. The Comparing Campuses collection now exceeds 200 campuses and is available on our website at www.asg-architects.com. Our thanks to the institutions featured on this poster.

SUITE
A traditional unit often opens onto a corridor where residents access common spaces such as lounges, studies, and bathrooms. These spaces outside the TRADITIONAL unit foster collaboration and help students develop academic and social skills.
Suites incorporate both bathrooms and a living area with several single or double bedrooms in the unit. With private living areas, fewer social spaces are SEMI-SUITE needed within the building.
