FOREWORD Colleges and universities are thinking intently about their path forward and making significant changes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Many questions remain and the future is unclear. But through this time, we see the resilience and creativity of the human spirit in the ways that institutions are adapting, along with the empathy and accommodation that they display as they seek the safest way to protect their communities. The projects in this publication represent how health sciences education, the interdisciplinary innovations it fosters, and the research conducted by students and instructors are ever more vital as the pandemic continues and beyond. The world has seen the extraordinary sacrifices healthcare professionals make. Now, more than ever, the mission to reflect the values of schools of nursing and health professions in the built environment, to create learning environments to push students to become the best providers they can be, resonates with a deeper focus.

Interprofessional Education and Research Ayers Saint Gross designs environments that support interprofessional education and research for schools of nursing and health sciences that prepare the next generation of health professionals for enhanced team-based patient care. Clinical learning environments need to adapt to evolving pedagogy, technology, and methodologies while responding to healthcare demand, specialized care needs, and research partnerships, which may include non-health professions. We design innovative buildings driven by programmatic needs and functional relationships that allow programs to endure changes and remain at the forefront of research and education. In interprofessional education, adaptable spaces provide a multitude of functions to serve various disciplines, scales, and modes of learning. More than ever, spaces that foster meaningful collaboration are critical to interprofessional learning experiences. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS PRESENT NEW PEDAGOGICAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT LEAD TO INNOVATION

Simulation Simulation has become integral to modern health sciences education, transforming it from content delivery to contextual learning, and requires a realistic physical environment with supplies and equipment to replicate realworld settings. Simulation environments are often designed as a suite that facilitates a predetermined sequence. Student groups meet in a pre-brief area, then filter into simulated clinical spaces designed to teach competencies across different cases such as labor and delivery, operatory, in-patient, home care, pediatric, or primary care. The student group reconvenes after the scenario in a debriefing room for discussion or to view the recorded scenario. Quality debriefing is critical to optimizing learning outcomes. Ayers Saint Gross programs and designs thoughtful and adaptable simulated environments tailored to each pedagogy and program. Planning for flexibility and adaptability in the simulation environment allows for modifications in response to new challenges in preparing students for the workforce. The ability for students and faculty to navigate and operate these spaces, to enter a scenario, control and respond to changing conditions, give and receive feedback, and repeat the process, is crucial to student success.

Community Wellness Health sciences schools can promote health literacy and reflect the core values of its programs and the profession through building design. Schools are engaged in community health and gear curricula towards the regions they serve. To meet ever-greater public health challenges, students work hard to learn the challenges they will face and new ways to reach more people. Thoughtfully planned, programmed, and designed health-learning spaces allow schools to actively serve specific community needs such as reaching patients in remote areas, offering community screening clinics, telehealth, and providing health services to students to prepare agile, responsive, and collaborative health professionals.

CMSC Renovation & North Tower Addition Johns Hopkins Health System Baltimore, Maryland An outcome of master planning efforts conducted by Ayers Saint Gross for the Johns Hopkins Health System, the former Children’s Medical Surgical Center (CMSC) building was determined to be an underutilized building in the heart of the clinical core of the medical campus. To address this and other campus needs, the existing CMSC building is being redeveloped with an additional wing to repurpose the building from clinical use to research use. Redevelopment includes a new high-performance exterior envelope for the entire building, along with infrastructure upgrades to support world-class research

for the School of Medicine. The additional wing doubles the site capacity and unifies interdepartmental research, providing a building with seamless connections to the clinical core and facilitating stronger “bench to bed” connections. In addition to providing much needed clinical research space and an enhanced materials handling facility to service the northwest quadrant for the clinical core, the CMSC Renovation & North Tower Addition creates a new visual presence for Johns Hopkins Hospital and the School of Medicine on the northwest side of campus.
