CDC OFFERS
FREE MEASLES COMMUNICATION
TOOLKIT
Measles cases in the U.S. hit 1,001 in early June, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but the nation could lose that status if the outbreaks continue, CDC says. Most of 2019’s cases involve children who have not been vaccinated. A toolkit to help health care providers talk with parents about measles and the measles vaccine, is now available from CDC. The kit includes guidance for talking with parents about vaccines, tips for preparing for questions parents may ask about vaccines, and vaccine safety fact sheets for medical staff, including “Understanding Thimerosal, Mercury, and Vaccine Safety.” Also included in the kit are resources for providers to share with parents. These include parent-friendly immunization schedules for children ages 0-6, fact sheets on infant immunization, the risks of non-vaccination, and how parents can prepare for less stressful shot visits. Infographics include: “Six Reasons to Follow CDC’s Immunization Schedule,” and “Measles: It Isn’t Just a Little Rash.”

HOSPITALS RECOGNIZED FOR STROKE CARE PERFORMANCE Nine Arkansas hospitals, including seven AHA members, were recognized by the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) for excellence in stroke care performance at a ceremony held June 7 at the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock. The ADH awards are based on hospital performance as documented in the Arkansas Stroke Registry between July 2017 and June 2018. They are given to hospitals for providing defect-free stroke care. Defect-free care is an aggregated metric based on the ten American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Coverdell performance measures in the “Get with the Guidelines®-Stroke Patient Management Tool.” These measures are benchmarked according to the standards of evidence-based stroke care guidelines to ensure stroke patients receive appropriate and timely care. The Arkansas Stroke Registry is the ADH stroke surveillance and quality improvement program. The primary goal of the ASR is to perform stroke surveillance, monitor stroke care performance, and provide stroke education and quality improvement assistance to improve stroke patient care and outcomes.

Nine simple, new measures can show the potential for a community’s well-being and the well-being of its residents, according to a new report from the 100 Million Healthier Lives campaign and the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics. Released in early June, The Well-Being in the Nation (WIN) Measurement Framework: Measures for Improving Health, Well-Being, and Equity Across Sectors is an Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) program. WIN measures can be used to guide policy, compare results across initiatives, and drive improvement in the addressing of health inequities. In creating the report, stakeholder groups identified more than 500 measures, which were narrowed down to nine core measures, as well as 54 leading indicators across 12 domains and 30 subdomains, such as food, health, housing, education, and transportation.

hatever you want to be, it helps to be well. Tobacco and nicotine use, lack of physical activity, and obesity can all stand in the way of wellness and increase risk for chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. In fact, tobacco is the leading cause of preventable death among Arkansans. But that important qualifier, "preventable," means that many of these negative outcomes can be avoided by making changes that support health. An active, healthy lifestyle is key. At the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH), we recently transformed our tobacco and nicotine cessation services into a new program called "Be Well Arkansas." Be Well Arkansas offers tips and support for those who are ready to quit smoking and address health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. It's never too late to make healthier decisions.
Tobacco Cessation
Wellness and cessation counselors with Be Well Arkansas are trained as certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTS). These TTS specialists have gone through a standardized national program delivered by Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center, an accredited TTS training site. The certification they earn ensures that Arkansans receive current, evidence-based treatment for their tobacco and nicotine dependence. Arkansans can call 833.283.WELL for counseling. Those who call the national number, 1.800.OUIT.NOW, are routed directly to the Be Well Arkansas call center. Callers who prefer in-person tobacco cessation counseling will be referred to TTS trained nurses at select local health units across the state. Those who have access to cessation services through their
health insurance provider, the Veterans Administration, or their employee assistance program will be referred to the services for which they are eligible. All insurance providers will reimburse health care providers for providing tobacco cessation services if U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines for treating tobacco use and dependence are followed. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRTI is only provided to clients who sign up for counseling with Be Well Arkansas and do not have health insurance or only have Medicare. Those with Medicaid are given prescriptions for NRT. Similar resources are made available to people who call to receive other services, such as counseling for diabetes. Callers will be referred first to programs offered by their own insurance providers and their workplace's employee assistance programs.

How Can I Refer Patients to Be Well? • Use the Be Well fax form, which can be downloaded at bewellarkansas.org (the fax number hasn’t changed: 1.800.827.7057) • Call 833.283.WELL to connect patients to the Be Well Call Center. If counselors are not available, leave the patient’s contact information and they will receive a callback within one business day.
