Power Women D E I D R E S MI TH Learn as much as you can about your industry and organization.
Melanie A. Baden
Executive Director of the Arkansas Waterways Association
Deidre Smith
Director of the Arkansas Waterways Commission
Power Women MELANIE A. BADEN I see people for who they are.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? Building strong relationships and thinking outside the box. Also, I’ve never been afraid to ask for tools or information I need to become successful; it never hurts to ask for help if you need it.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? I see people for who they are. When I meet someone, whether they’re a dockworker or a CEO, I treat them the same. Everyone has a purpose, and everyone deserves the same respect, care and opportunity.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Learn as much as you can about your industry and organization as quickly as possible. Take on more duties than are required and come up with your own initiatives. Finally, don’t be afraid to move to the next elevated position when it opens. Somebody will get that promotion, why not you?
WHAT CAN WE DO TO BETTER EMPOWER FEMALE PROFESSIONALS? Be a mentor and surround yourself with female mentors. I’ve been blessed to have been surrounded by so many strong women, and as a result I actively participate in mentoring programs to uplift young women. Simply put, we must pay it forward.
HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED? As someone who accepted challenges and exceeded expectations. As someone who always improved organizations and left things better than when I arrived.
Power Women ME LI SSA HE N D R I CKS I love working with people in our community.
Melissa Hendricks
Foundation Director at Centers for Youth and Families and Chair of the Little Rock Port Authority Board of Directors
WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? During my time with the Port Authority, we’ve built our own River Resource Center and secured substantial grant funding to grow our capacity for new companies and jobs. HOW DID YOUR EDUCATION PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR CAREER? My time at Arkansas State University taught me how to effectively communicate, good time management and the importance of community involvement.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? At the Little Rock Port Authority, I love being part of a team from our staff, to partners like Flake & Kelley, Garver, the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Arkansas Department of Commerce, and to my fellow board members, who are all committed to growing the economy and job opportunities in our community.
WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I recently thru-hiked all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. On a professional level, when I came to the AWA it had been dormant for five years, and today it’s a large and dynamic organization at every port, terminal and dam across Arkansas.
Rachel Bunch
Executive Director at the Arkansas Health Care Association HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? Really, I was just looking for a part-time job in college. The more I learned about the association and about the services provided by our members across the state, the more I knew this could be a long term fit for me professionally. It’s easy for people to get a negative impression about my profession, but the positive work done by our members outshines that negativity any day of the week. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? My 16-year old daughter, Emily. She is hands-down my greatest accomplishment; she’s smart, compassionate and has a great sense of humor. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR WORK AND YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? It’s always a struggle, because my family and friends are a priority in my life, but so is my work. I had to let go of perfectionism and do my best to be flexible. Emily’s often done homework at my office on the weekends, and I’ve done my share of calls and emails while on vacation. You just have to do the best you can.
Power Women R AC H E L B UN C H I love the people I work with and for.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Listen and ask questions, and never think you’re too good for something. Be diplomatic, remember to balance confidence with humility. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I love the people I work with and for, and that I get to work on policies and legislation that improves long-term care for our seniors.
Jean Block
Chief Legal Officer at Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? The arc of my life. I grew up in a Section 8 apartment complex with a single parent and was the first in my family to attend college. Then I became licensed to practice law in two states. I moved to Arkansas 17 years ago without knowing anyone, but I’ve built a legal career that’s led me to a senior management position in our state’s largest wastewater utility. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Always give 100%, people notice. Be kind to yourself when you make a mistake. Selfcare is as important as hard work. And, if she’s in a male-dominated field like I am, I’d tell her “there’s room for you at the top, never doubt that!”
Power Women JEAN B LOC K Always give 100%.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? First, that the work I do is meaningful to Little Rock’s quality of life. Second, that I get to work with 216 smart and talented people, and finally that I’m presented with new challenges every day. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED? I hope people will say that I was genuine, reliable, and loyal. Also, that I loved to laugh and to have a good time, and that I threw great parties!

Signature Bank – Bentonville Market President WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? Listen and invest in people before you judge them. Everybody has a story to tell, and if you truly want to serve others you must learn their story. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A WORK/LIFE BALANCE? It’s different for everyone. I’ve been blessed to love my career, so it doesn’t feel like work. I’ve also recently discovered yoga, which helps me balance out when I come home. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Don’t put limits on yourself, and don’t let others put them on you either. With passion and desire you can do anything, as long as you give it your all. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” – Zig Ziglar
Power Women M E LODY M ARTE N S Listen and invest in people.

Power Women AL E X G LADDE N Someone you can count on.
Alexandria Gladden Signature Bank – Springdale Market President
WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO YOUR CAREER? Well, I do love federal holidays. More seriously, I grew up watching my father progress in his banking career; seeing deals come together and help people reinvent themselves and follow their passions is so invigorating. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of people.” – Steve Jobs WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Working at a locally-owned bank gives us strong ties to the community and allows us to see the impact we make firsthand. Seeing those direct improvements to our area and local economy is my favorite part of the job. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I’m proud to lead an incredibly hardworking group of people and proud to serve as a role model for my daughter as she grows up. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED? I’d be happy if I’m remembered as someone you could count on, who was valuable and reliable, as the first one people would turn to for help.
Christine Morrison
President of Mortgage Lending at Signature Bank of Arkansas WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.” – Maya Angelou HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I sort of stumbled into banking, but it turned out to be a great fit. I’m a very detailoriented person with a knack for multitasking, and those qualities are perfect for mortgage lending. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Building the mortgage lending department from the ground up. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Don’t take everything so seriously. You will make mistakes. What matters is how gracefully you navigate those mistakes and use them as learning opportunities.
Power Women C H R I STI NE M OR R I SON Don’t take everything so seriously.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? It may sound cliché, but I love helping people. I find helping young families purchase their first homes to be particularly rewarding, and seeing their pride and joy in having a place to call their own and build their lives from is incredibly fulfilling.
Power Women CR AN DAL L STR EET T Be the hardestworking person on your team.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR CAREER? I enjoy helping people from all walks of life fulfill their dreams and goals, and my job allows me to be a leader within my company and help others find success. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? My leadership role within the bank. Helping others succeed and watching them reach their potential to grow themselves professionally and personally is incredibly rewarding. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Be the hardest-working person on your team, and don’t be afraid to sit at the table and speak up.
Tammie Edrington Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Signature Bank of Arkansas
Power Women TA MMIE EDRINGTO N Believe in Yourself!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I joined Signature Bank fifteen years ago as an executive assistant and worked my way up, taking on new responsibilities as they were presented. If I’d known at 18 what I know now, I would have worked in HR from the start, I absolutely love it. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? Being willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. It all comes down to work ethic. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Believe in yourself! Always stretch beyond what you’re comfortable doing, that’s how we grow and determine what we really want to do in life.
Power Women SH ANNON NE WTON Know what you’re good at.
Shannon Newton President of the Arkansas Trucking Association
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? My first job after college was in payroll and new hire orientation at Maverick Transportation. Later, I had the opportunity to join the ATA, where I started out handling financials for our insurance trust. From that small start, my responsibilities and love for the industry just kept growing. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Success is harder than it looks, and there’s a lot of pressure to succeed. Women are expected to earn the respect of their peers and snag a corner office while simultaneously raising kids with cute monogrammed backpacks and homemade snacks. Most women, myself included, have to find our own definition of success and figure out what we’re willing to sacrifice to achieve it. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? Know what you’re good at; do that. Remember that you can’t do it all, everyone has a different skill set and limited bandwidth. Identify the areas you excel in and surround yourself with people who have the talent to fill in the gaps. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? The variety. My responsibilities cover so many different areas, from public relations and governmental affairs to budgeting and business development. Two days are never the same. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I’m proud of all the success the ATA has enjoyed over the past five years. Our biggest win was the legislative victory in 2019, when we helped pass the largest highway funding plan in Arkansas history.
Lesley Nalley CEO of Hot Springs Village Property Owners Association Power Women L E SL E Y N AL L E Y Empowerment comes from within.
WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Adoption of Hot Springs Village’s first comprehensive master plan, giving current and future residents a tool to secure their long-term prosperity. WHAT IS YOU SECRET TO SUCCESS? Embracing collaboration among workers, making decisions based on data rather than feelings, and never compromising my integrity for the sake of an easy win. HOW CAN WE WORK TO BETTER EMPOWER FEMALE PROFESSIONALS? Empowerment comes from within. Society should encourage every man, woman and child, regardless of gender, to feel worthy of seizing opportunities for themselves. It’s everyone’s responsibility to encourage our little girls and boys to achieve their potentials. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED? As someone devoted to her family, friends and community, who wasn’t afraid of obstacles and did everything she could to benefit those she loved. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded” – The Gospel of Luke, Chapter 12, Verse 48

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Stop asking, stop waiting and speak up. Your voice and viewpoint are vital and what you bring to the table is important. If you focus on your work and not your gender, everyone else in the meeting will do the same. HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK WITH YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? My profession is demanding, and my mom guilt runs deep sometimes. However, I’m also married to an architect, and he is my biggest cheerleader. We share all household responsibilities and split time at work. It’s hard, but we make it work with support from our family and friends. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED? As a hard worker, a good mother, a loving wife, a compassionate leader and a badass girl-boss. Can I say that?
Cynthia Pruitt
Prinicpal at Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? When you are the only woman in the room, sometimes it can be difficult to make yourself heard and recognized. Believe that your knowledge is essential to the conversation and jump right in. Thanks to our mothers and grandmothers, the days of women being excluded from the conversation are mostly behind us, so make yourself heard. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I’ve been able to work on some great Civic projects, like downtown Little Rock’s Robinson Auditorium and the new Arkansas Arts Center, which is currently under construction. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? Adaptation and perseverance. The only constant in life is change, so if something isn’t working, recognize it, address the problem and adapt.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? I’d like to say it’d been a dream of mine, but it was actually because of the tall, blonde pharmacy student who became my husband. I gladly joined him in his goal to own an independent pharmacy, and the rest is history.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I’ve been lucky to work for organizations that focus on providing health care, access to education and overcoming hunger and poverty. I’m addicted to making life better for others.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? I love the people, the opportunity to impact people each day in small ways is a huge gift, something we shouldn’t take for granted. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? My volunteer work. I’ve helped the effort to expand Phillips Community College, and I also assisted with the fundraiser effort to build the college’s Grand Prairie Center. I think those projects have really impacted the quality of life for people around Stuttgart.
WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I’ve had a successful career in business, but I’m most proud of having enough guts and talent to spend many years earning a living as a professional musician. Being in a band has really taught me about being a team leader and member in business, how to capitalize on my strengths and weaknesses. But remember, the singer always gets to pick the song’s key. HOW CAN SOCIETY ADAPT TO BETTER EMPOWER FEMALE PROFESSIONALS? Let more of them be in charge, and they’ll show you how effective they are!

TO N YA VI LLI N ES I love helping people and making a difference.
Tonya Villines President of Junior Achievement
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
I love helping people and making a difference. My husband and I was involved in the Fellowship Kids Ministry at Fellowship Bible Church in Little Rock, where I taught 4-year olds. At that time God put a strong desire in my heart to advocate for youth development, and I’ve followed that desire ever since, leading me first to overseeing a children’s ministry at a church plant and eventually to Junior Achievement, where I equip K-12 students across Arkansas for their careers. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO YOUR CAREER?
I love working for an organization that changes and transforms lives. I was especially drawn in by Junior Achievement’s goal of empowering young people to reach their dreams. Our classroom mentors inspire young people each week through providing real-world knowledge and skills. Seeing that transformation is absolutely exhilarating. All too often students are underserved by their schools, especially in terms of financial and economic knowledge. Junior Achievement of Arkansas is the foremost group working to change that, and presiding over JA has been incredibly rewarding. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS?
I learned early in my career that leadership is about people and relationships, that true leaders don’t work to advance themselves, but to advance others. If you’re placed in such a position, it’s vital that you build a positive environment for your team members and community with the people you serve. Those connections are the real recipe for success. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
The width and breadth of our state’s Junior Achievement program. This year, JA is currently on track to serve over 13,000 students with more than 75,000 hours of JA educational programming. Junior Achievement is the foremost educational nonprofit in Arkansas; we pull together schools and businesses to provide truly remarkable growth experiences for our state’s students. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE?
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill
Power Women M ARTH A ELLEN TAL B OT Nobody starts out knowing everything.
Martha Ellen Talbot Owner of Marlsgate Plantation
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? The key to an authentic, satisfying life is service. I currently serve with three nonprofits; experiencing the raw reality of putting yourself in someone else’s painful shoes and working to uplift them has really changed my life. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Waking up on Marlsgate Plantation every morning is itself a gift. Through my work, I’m allowed to provide an environment for others to craft meaningful experiences and memories through weddings, gatherings and other celebrations. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER? Nobody starts out knowing everything. Our true calling opens to us along the way; every step and misstep is a marker on the path. Life is embracing each chapter and lesson, and if we serve with a happy heart, the circles of authentic connections will make everything worthwhile. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK WITH YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? I married my high school prom date 3 years ago, and Beau and I hold hands every day while working and dreaming together. Marlsgate Plantation is a reflection of our love and relationship, and positioning our historic property fuels our hearts and minds. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “We are all just walking each other home.”
Amanda Bledsoe Chiropractor at Bledsoe Chiropractic WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS?
Work hard and let God do the rest. I’ve been blessed to have a relationship with God that has grown during my time as a business owner, and I’m so grateful for my faith community to lean on during challenges. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER?
Pay attention and learn from every experience and opportunity. Everyone needs mentors and teachers, and the lessons you learn from those people shape your decisions. Also, remember that you can pick up good and bad lessons, so you have to decide for yourself who you are and what lessons are worth keeping. HOW DO YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED?
Power Women A M ANDA B L E DSOE A giver.
As a giver. A wise woman said, “Make good money and have a great impact,” and that just stuck with me. I feel called to take the blessings I’ve received and pass them on through community organizations like Deliver Hope and the Bethlehem House. I am truly at my best and happiest when I am giving. President & CEO of KellCo Custom Homes, KellCo Real Estate and Energy Air Inc. WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO YOUR CAREER?
I have a fierce passion for helping others which is the driving force allowing for me to provide such a dynamic approach to serving my clients in every venture I set. I’ve set the bar high for myself and work daily to exceed my clients’ expectations. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR FIELD?
Having a family background in the Real Estate and construction industry inspired me at an early age. I started as a one-woman, home based operation, which launched in 1994. Today, I have grown to a collaborative team of over 35 individuals devoted to providing an unwavering commitment of exceptional services within all aspects of my corporations. HOW DID YOUR EDUCATION PREPARE YOU FOR PROFESSIONAL LIFE?
My extensive educational background and professional licenses help equip me for the demands of today and are fueled by the lessons of my upbringing. Maintaining a strong will to push forward and staying focused on the individual needs of my clients certainly wasn’t learned in any textbook, but by great work ethics and self discipline which has resulted in over 25 years of industry experience and success. I’ve been surrounded and loved by a multitude of intelligent and powerful people who have taught me so much. It truly takes a village and I am surrounded by the very best. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG WOMAN STARTING HER CAREER?
A praying woman is a powerful woman! With the many hiccups and challenges along your journey, learn to face them, grow from them, and use them to your full advantage! We can go through life taking half-steps and holding our breath, or we can choose to lean into the complete fullness of who we were made to be. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A WORK/LIFE BALANCE?
I take time to make time! I put aside my phones and gadgets and embrace my family. I accept that I cannot be all things to all people. Through all my life’s highlights and successes, my education, entrepreneurships and competitive fitness career, the bond that I share with my family stands alone. With four active boys there is never a dull nor quiet moment and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
Personally, raising and teaching our four sons to be faithful to God for whom we serve, to be kind, loving, independent and honest young men, I am most proud of. They inspire me in every part of my life. On a professional note, my accomplishments are virtually endless; I am powerfully driven to provide the best in customer service with integrity and much passion. I am truly blessed to have accomplished so much and for being entrusted with the many opportunities given.
