Introducing a complete health system centered on creating a better state of health for every Arkansan.

You’ll find us in every corner of the state. We care for you through our hospital and clinics as well as deliver specialty care through our digital health connections — allowing patients to be seen by a UAMS health care provider without leaving home. For 140 years, you’ve known UAMS as the state’s health care leader… where the brightest minds deliver advanced treatments. What started with one campus in Little Rock in 1879 has evolved into a multi-campus clinical delivery system that includes regional campuses strategically placed across the state with plans to add more. More than a hospital. More than a health sciences university. And more than cuttingedge research. We are an integrated health system — one that serves all of the state, ensuring better access and, ultimately, a better state of health for each and every Arkansan.

IT’S TIME TO GET STARTED IN ORDER TO BE READY FOR SUMMER! If you’re shaving, plucking and waxing, you can stop! And if you’ve heard how painful laser hair removal is, you can forget that too! The Lumenis LightSheer laser hair removal is fast, efficacious and offers maximum patient comfort. LightSheer is 75% faster than the average hair reduction session and features the unique HIT and ChillTip technologies for state of the art comfort.

Laser Hair Removal

Multiple treatments are required to achieve permanent hair reduction. The laser targets hair follicles that are in their early growth (anagen) phase and not all hairs are in the same phase at the same time. Nothing removes all hair forever and ever. You will need a touch up occasionally. That may be in a couple of years, or if you suffer from hormonal conditions like PCOS you may need them more than once a year. LightSheer uses a state-of-the-art 805nm diode laser, which ensures safety for all skin types. The HIT technology incorporates suction to elevate and gently stretch the skin. In doing so the laser achieves maximum absorption into hair follicles and the ability to cover larger areas more quickly. The ChillTip technology is a cooling system that even further enhances comfort. Schedule your Laser Hair Removal treatment today!

THEA FOUNDATION For the last 19 years, Thea Foundation has advocated the importance of the arts in the development of our youth through a number of different programs — Thea Art Closet, Arts Reconstruction, student scholarships and fundraisers. Thea Foundation was named for the daughter of Linda and Paul Leopoulos, Thea Kay Leopoulos, who died in a car accident at 17. Before her death, her parents observed a shift in her schoolwork after her involvement with the arts, through which she thrived academically, socially and emotionally. In her memory, her parents started an art competition for scholarships, founding Thea Foundation in 2001 and awarding the first scholarship the next year. According to the foundation’s 201819 Statewide Impact report, more than $2.3 million in scholarships have been awarded to Arkansas students since 2002. Thea Foundation offers scholarships in visual arts, performing arts, creative writing, film, fashion design and slam poetry. Amanda Seevers, director of communications at Thea Foundation, says that as of 2019, the foundation awards 36 scholarships every spring. One particular fundraiser, Into The Blue, is a night of celebration filled with entertainment that highlights the success of the foundation’s

statewide programs. “Usually, Into the Blue is a celebration focused on our performing arts scholarship winners, who have gone on to do great things, such as performing on Broadway,” says Seevers. In the fall, Thea Foundation will also incorporate performances by students who’ve benefited from the Art Closet program at the 2020 Into the Blue. Another highly anticipated event that Thea Foundation puts on is the Blue Plate Special, which will take place on October 19, 2020. Along with being a fundraiser, the event is a celebration of the culinary arts and includes dishes from notable chefs, wine pairings and entertainment from local artists and musicians. One of Thea Foundation’s impressive programs, Art Closet, helps to fund projects that students around the state are involved in. When a teacher launches a foundation approved project, the foundation provides up to half of the needed funds upfront, and teachers can share it with friends and colleagues and ask for donations through DonorsChoose, an online platform for corporate and nonprofit donors. When the project is fully funded, DonorsChoose quickly purchases and delivers the supplies directly to the school. The program supports educators

all over the state as long as they are in a public school and to date, has led to more than $1.5 million awarded in art supplies to hundreds of underfunded schools across Arkansas. A 2018-19 year-end report showed that last year, Art Closet awarded $54,835 in art supplies and creative materials for schools, impacting 27,063 students and supporting 117 public school teachers across the state. After matching funds, the total amount awarded was $118,919. In the past few years, Thea’s Art Closet has grown exponentially. “In the past year, our growth and available budget for the Art Closet doubled,” says Seevers. “This year, we’re awarding $100,000 to different schools across the state, which we’ve actually almost spent that budget for this school year, because we’ve had so much interest from teachers needing supplies.” Thea Foundation also offers the Arts Reconstruction program — Thea’s focused effort to provide professional development to public school teachers during a weeklong visual arts technique training during the summer at the Windgate Center for Art + Design, located on the UA Little Rock campus. Participating teachers in the Arts Reconstruction program also are provided with the necessary supplies to implement the new medium they learn at the training. They are to use these in their classrooms during the next school year. In the past, teachers have learned mediums such as cyanotype, jewelry making and this summer will learn raku firing — a Japanese ceramics technique. More than $45,000 in supplies were funded by Thea Foundation for the teachers who participated in the 2018-19 Arts Reconstruction program to implement the new visual arts medium in their classrooms beginning in the fall semester of 2019.

Thea also has an Art Department exhibition series to connect the community with artists around the state. Seevers says its mission is to engage young arts patrons and to help cultivate a community of arts-focused young professionals that are involved in central Arkansas’s greater arts community. “Quarterly, we host exhibitions from a different, local artist or collaborative artists in our gallery, and we support the artist through funding a special opening reception for them, including food and beverage, and we usually garner a lot of promotion for their work and bring people in the community to view their art and purchase it,” Seevers says. Upcoming artists to be featured include Matt White on Sept. 4 and Katie McGowan on Nov. 6. For loyal supporters of the series, Thea Insiders offers perks for the Art Department series and other events in exchange for an annual gift. Those who want a more hands-on way of engaging with Thea Foundation may also consider attending their annual community

53

chalk-art event at the Clinton Presidential Library, Thea Paves the Way. The event began in 2005 as the foundation’s first outreach event in an attempt to bring the community together for collaborative art. Happening this year on Sept. 19, teachers, as well as hundreds of students will come from across the state to kick off the first few weeks of the school year by enjoying a morning of sidewalk chart art and learning about the resources available to them through Thea Foundation. Finally, Thea Foundation also services more schools than just those in central Arkansas. “In fact, this past academic school year, we funded more projects in the Northwest Arkansas area than we did in central Arkansas,” says Seevers. “A lot of schools in Washington County have known about our offerings and have used our resources for many years.” The foundation’s impact is large, and the growth is not intended to stop anytime soon. “Our team continues to evolve our programs to enrich as many young Arkansans as we can through the power of the arts.” says Seevers. aymag.com

Brighter future. Cleaner power. Entergy Arkansas is investing today to power a brighter future for our customers. Clean, reliable energy is not only vital to the safety and comfort of every Arkansan, it fuels industry and our economy. Together, we power life.

BUILDING CLEAN POWER GENERATION

Arkansas’ largest solar energy project, the Stuttgart Solar Energy Center, came online in 2018, providing 81 megawatts of clean, reliable power. A 100-megawatt solar facility in Chicot County will come online in 2020, and a proposed solar facility near Searcy will provide another 100 megawatts. Together, these facilities will provide enough clean power to energize more than 45,000 homes.

MODERNIZING THE GRID TO IMPROVE RELIABILITY

We are replacing and upgrading infrastructure like power lines and substations to improve reliability and maintain affordable power for years to come.

INVESTING IN NEW TECHNOLOGY

Implementing new digital technology and advanced meters improves power restoration, energy efficiency and customer service. These new tools can also help customers better understand and control their energy usage. Learn more at entergyarkansas.com/brightfuture.

DERMATOLOGY help determine if a referral is required with your insurance. You can also call the phone number on your insurance card to find out your insurance referral requirements. IS MY DIET RELATED TO THE HEALTH OF MY SKIN?

Foods with a high glycemic index (for instance sugar, white bread and white rice) cause higher glucose levels in the blood and correspond to elevated levels of insulin. Insulin has been shown to increase sebum (your skin’s natural oil) production which plays a major role in the development of acne. In regards to diet and sun exposure, a diet rich in pomegranate extract, Vitamins C and E, green tea extract and nicotinamide (a form of Vitamin B3), has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of skin cancers.

ARKANSAS DERMATOLOGY WHEN SHOULD I SEEK THE CARE OF A DERMATOLOGIST?

A general skin exam is recommended for individuals who have a history of sunburns, tanning bed exposure, more than 50 moles on their body, a personal or family history of skin cancer or those individuals who have a compromised immune system. We also recommend that you call your dermatology provider when you have a new, growing, bleeding or sore spot that appears on your skin. It is also highly recommended that you seek out a dermatologist if you have an autoimmune condition such as lupus. DO I NEED A REFERRAL BEFORE SETTING UP AN APPOINTMENT?

Most commercial insurances do not require you to have a referral in order to set up an appointment. Our office is happy to

IS THERE A SPECIFIC SUNSCREEN I SHOULD BE USING? WHAT SPF FACTOR SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN DECIDING ON SUNSCREEN PRODUCTS?

Generally, the best sunscreen is the one that you will use. Studies show that people tend to use half the amount they should for optimal protection. We recommend at least SPF 50 or above. There are many products over the counter and the main sunscreens are either chemical- or mineral-based. We generally recommend a broad-spectrum mineral (zinc or titanium) based sunscreen as this type of sunscreen forms a barrier on your skin to filter and/or reflect harmful ultraviolet sun rays. We specifically recommend the EltaMD Sport SPF 50 because it is water-resistant and will not run into your eyes. Sunscreen should be applied every two hours during periods of prolonged sun exposure and more often if you are in the water.

CLEANING

MOLLY MAID T

hose who suggest home cleaning services are all the same have never used Molly Maid. The brand has built a reputation for quality, service and, most importantly, trust. As such, when it comes to some of the most common questions related to home cleaning, there are few more qualified to answer than the experts at Molly Maid. HOW DIRTY DOES MY HOUSE NEED TO BE FOR YOUR SERVICES TO BE OF USE? Consider this — most homes have multiple people coming in and out, using the bathrooms many times, kitchen splatters happen and get left behind, and there simply are not enough hours in the day to do it all. While we shouldn’t let it get out of hand before we recruit help, we all have different preferences when it comes to cleaning — no two homes are the same and require different attention. Most of our customers prefer every two weeks, while some opt for weekly. HOW CAN I TRUST AN IN-HOME SERVICE PROFESSIONAL? WHAT KIND OF VETTING DO YOU PERFORM ON YOUR EMPLOYEES? While recommendations from friends and family might be helpful, they can’t be the only thing we rely on. At Molly Maid, we perform thorough background checks on all of our employees. We work and see them on a daily basis and collect constant feedback to ensure we are only sending the most qualified professionals to each home. We only send out team members that we would trust in our own homes. WHAT PROTOCOLS DO YOU HAVE IN PLACE TO ENSURE THE SECURITY OF MY HOME? Your home is your haven and place of refuge. We don’t take it lightly that you are welcoming and trusting us with your home. We take notes and receive preferences from each customer on how they would like for us to enter their home, whether they are there or not. Most customers provide us a key that we manage and store securely to enter their home while they are not home — the best vote of confidence we can have. WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CASE OF A BREAK, OR ANOTHER RELATED LOSS, OF A PERSONAL ITEM? At Molly Maid, we are properly bonded and insured to protect our customers against damage or theft of a personal item. We have a system and procedure in place and work to ensure that we are responding to each customer’s needs if an unfortunate event were to take place.

HOW SHOULD I GO ABOUT CHOOSING THE RIGHT CLEANING SERVICE FOR ME? There is much to consider when welcoming a new company to your home. First, is the cleaning service taking the time to get to know you and your home before committing to service it? You also want to know if that service is properly insured and what kind of insurance the service has. Are employee vehicles or company cars used and how is insurance verified? Next, check out the business on Google or Facebook — what is the community saying about this business and how is the business responding? While this is not a complete list, it’s definitely a good start. WHAT IF SOMEONE IS NOT HAPPY WITH HIS/HER CLEANING SERVICE? While we strive to get it right the first time, we provide a service warranty for each cleaning that we review in full with each customer. If you aren’t happy with the work we did, give us a call. We want to know. IN WHAT OTHER WAYS DOES YOUR ORGANIZATION SERVE ITS COMMUNITY? Molly Maid has a foundation called the Ms. Molly Foundation. Through this foundation, we donate a portion of every cleaning to the Dorcas House in Little Rock and the NWA Women’s Shelter to help victims of domestic violence. In October, we recruit the assistance of our customers to collect toiletries, clothes and cash donations to directly help these shelters. We make a difference with every cleaning.

WHAT IS DOOR-TO-BALLOON TIME AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? Door-to-balloon time measures the period of time from when a patient comes in contact with a health care provider until a blocked artery is cleared. Time is heart muscle. It is crucial to restore the flow of blood to the heart as quickly as possible. Not only does it affect that person’s life, but also their quality of life. Every 30-minute delay in care increases the risk of death and heart failure by almost 30 percent. The national gold standard for door-to-balloon time is less than 90 minutes. In 2019, the Conway Regional heart team averaged a door-to-balloon time of 55 minutes. WHAT IS CRUCIAL FOR DOOR-TO-BALLOON TIME? Achieving an excellent standard of care requires consistent coordination and high performance of a professionally trained care team. Our care team includes interventional cardiologists, cardiac catheterization lab staff, emergency department staff, and EMS agencies, particularly MEMS. MEMS personnel can activate our heart team with one phone call and send EKG test results to the Conway Regional ER prior to arriving with a possible heart attack patient. Our heart care team can read the EKG from a phone, in many instances, and form a treatment plan while in route to the hospital.

WHAT RECENT TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES ARE HELPING IMPROVE HEART CARE? In December of 2019, Conway Regional became the first hospital in Arkansas to have the new IntraSight with Sync Vision cardiovascular technology. This technology allows us to precisely identify the location of blockages within the coronary artery. The technology works by sending a tiny camera into the vessels of the coronary artery where it records and overlays two separate images of the vessels to determine the best place for a stent to clear blockage. This technology also provides enhanced visuals during image-guided procedures of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. It gives us the capability to pre-plan stent placement prior to the procedure. In 2018, we were one of the first hospitals to offer Micra pacemakers, which are less invasive, do not use cardiac leads, and last longer than traditional pacemakers. We have all that your heart needs, all in one place. To learn about risk factors for heart attacks, visit www.conwayregional.org

ONCOLOGY

CONWAY REGIONAL RACHANA YENDALA, MD, HEMATOLOGIST-ONCOLOGIST

WHAT IS NEW RESEARCH TELLING US ABOUT TREATMENT OF BREAST CANCER? With new research that is occurring, we are able to give hope to those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Current research is examining cancer at the molecular level and the growth of new nonchemotherapies such as targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormone therapy. We are identifying patients who need more or a different type of treatment, as well as those who don’t benefit from an aggressive treatment. In other words, not every woman diagnosed with breast cancer should have mastectomies and chemotherapy. WHAT ARE THE GENERAL GUIDELINES SURROUNDING BREAST CANCER SCREENING? HOW EARLY SHOULD WOMEN BEGIN MAMMOGRAMS? The majority of women are at an average risk for breast cancer. In general, US Prevention Services Task Force guidelines recommend mammogram screenings for all women ages 50 to 75, every one to two years. There is some debate on the benefit from screening early in your 40s, although the American Cancer Society recommends to start at age 45 with annual mammograms until 55, then decreasing to every two years. I recommend patients have a conversation with their physicians about when to begin breast cancer screening. ARE THERE ADDITIONAL TESTS OR SCREENING THAT YOU RECOMMEND FOR WOMEN THAT HELP DETECT THE PRESENCE OF ANY TYPE OF CANCER? Yes, all women should have cervical cancer screening with Pap Smear every two years for ages 21-29 and every three to five years after 30, with or without additional HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) testing respectively. Additionally, HPV vaccines are now recommended for both men and women ages 11-26. All men and women are recommended for colorectal cancer screening from age 50 with risk based interval colonoscopy. Additionally, individuals ages 55-74 who currently smoke or quit within the last 15 years should have lung cancer screening with a low dose CT chest. Periodic skin exams are also recommended for those at high risk for melanoma.

ARE THERE OTHER SIGNS OF BREAST CANCER? A: Breast cancer, and cancer in general, can be unpredictable. I tell my patients to be aware of unusual symptoms such as unexpected weight loss and tiredness, new body lesions, any bleeding after menopause, or abdomen swelling in women as some of the concerning symptoms for a potential cancer. A delayed presentation often misses an early diagnosis influencing cancer outcomes in several patients. ARE THERE ANY GUIDELINES SURROUNDING WHEN TO HAVE A MASTECTOMY? A: In general, mastectomy is indicated for patients who are not candidates for breast conservation like in those with large tumors, suspicious lesions across the breast, inability to get radiation treatment after conserving the breast and in women who prefer mastectomy by choice. Dr. Rachana Yendala practices at the Conway Regional Multispecialty Clinic, located at 525 Western Ave. Suite 305 in Conway. NURSING & REHABILITATION

ROBINSON NURSING & REHAB

M

aking the decision to admit yourself or a loved one into a nursing home can be one of the hardest decisions in the entire world. But the experts at Robinson Nursing & Rehabilitation are here to help with a guiding hand and answer some of the most common questions to apprehensions that family members have. HOW DO I PICK THE RIGHT NURSING HOME THAT IS BEST FOR MYSELF OR MY LOVED ONE? The first thing to do is narrow down your nursing home choices and then visit those homes and meet the administrator, the director of nursing and get a feel from other staff members. Ask for a tour so that you can go visit the care halls where you can meet the CNAs, for they’re actually the caregivers who are going to be taking most of the care for your loved ones. You’ll be seeing them a lot more than you will other staff members. It’s really important that you get a good feeling, that you feel comfortable, because once placement happens, then communication is going to become key, and you want to feel that you’re able to visit and talk to the staff and communicate effectively to deal with any concerns or issues. WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM PLACING A LOVED ONE IN A NURSING FACILITY? The best model of care for a loved one is keeping them at home where

you’re closer to a one-on-one type of care model. But, when it becomes too much, and families just aren’t able to attend to the loved one’s needs anymore that’s when placement in a nursing facility becomes a potential. Always have realistic expectations when putting a loved one in a nursing home. If a family had difficulty dealing with somebody one-on-one, nursing homes are not one-on-one, and those same issues might recur. If the person falls at home, there is a really good chance they’re going to fall in the facility. Ensure that you have good communication with administration, with nursing, also with those CNAs, because they’re going to be the ones who are going to be hands-on. Be patient and realistic and help us help you and your loved one. WHAT ARE SOME SUCCESS STORIES THAT COME FROM NURSING HOME PLACEMENT? We’re fortunate to have a very good therapy group, and we’re able to take a lot of people, get them on a therapy plan, and then send them back home to live the rest of their lives. That’s our target. That’s what we’re trying to do. From a socialization standpoint, we can take people whose spouse may have passed, or who are just alone in their homes. In such situations, depression can set in and also get people down physically. But when they come into a nursing home, they’re around other people and their socialization can pick up. So, we’ve seen a lot of people who have come into nursing homes over the years who get to be around the staff and make relationships with them, and their morale immediately picks back up.

ORTHOPEDICS

CONWAY REGIONAL J. TOD GHORMLEY, MD, GRANT W. BENNETT, MD, H. SCOTT SMITH, MD CONWAY ORTHOPEDIC & SPORTS MEDICINE CENTER

HOW LONG HAS MAKO ROBOTIC ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY BEEN AVAILABLE IN FAULKNER COUNTY? In September of 2018, we began performing hip and knee surgery using the Mako robotic arm-assisted technology at Conway Regional Medical Center. Since that time, more than 500 total Mako procedures have been performed there, including more than 350 total knee replacements. HOW DOES THE MAKO HIP AND KNEE REPLACEMENT METHOD WORK? Mako is a new approach to joint replacement that offers the potential for more precise customized positioning of implants for each patient. A CT scan of a knee or hip is loaded into the Mako system software, where a 3D model is created. This 3D model is used to pre-plan and assist us in performing a knee or hip replacement. We can then proceed with or adjust that plan once in the operating room by controlling the robotic arm that helps execute the procedure with greater precision and accuracy.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO USING MAKO ROBOTIC SURGERY? The Mako has advantages over the traditional replacements. The only difference patients will notice is that the CT scan will be performed preoperatively. The incision will look the same and we use the same implants. The advantages from a surgeon’s perspective are the precision and intraoperative customization provided by the Mako. Many times, that precision enables us to remove less bone or decrease the amount of soft tissue trauma. For many patients, this may translate into improved range of motion and less time on crutches or a walker. The majority of patients return home the day after surgery. For more information about Mako visit our website: www.conwayregional.org/mako

EYE CARE

BOOZMAN HOF EYE CENTER CAN MY DROOPY EYELIDS BE CORRECTED? Drooping of the lid can be caused by excess skin or fat along the upper eyelid, stretching of the muscles or tendons in the eyelid (eyelid ptosis), and drooping of the brow (brow ptosis). Blepharoplasty can be done to address the excess skin and fat along the upper eyelid. Tucking or shortening of the muscle or tendon in the eyelid can help to repair eyelid ptosis. Because the degree and extent of brow ptosis is unique in each patient, the brow lift techniques should be customized. Many patients have more than just one of these types of drooping, so it is important that your surgeon is able to identify and treat any these to achieve the best results. HOW COMMON IS SKIN CANCER AROUND THE EYES? More than one million skin cancers are reported in the United States each year. Approximately 5-10% of these involve the skin around the eyes. Basal cell carcinomas are the most common skin cancer, occurring in approximately 30% of individuals during their lifetime. There are several other types of skin cancer that occur, including Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanomas. Each of these cancers should be treated as early as possible to ensure the best outcomes. If you have any growths around the eyes that are new, increasing in size, changing in color, or have other concerning changes, you should have these evaluated by an eyelid specialist. HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE GLAUCOMA? Glaucoma is a disease characterized by damage to the nerve that carries your vision from the eye to the brain. It is associated with high pressure within the eye or intraocular pressure. The vast majority of patients with glaucoma have no symptoms, so it’s important to be screened by your eye doctor.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LASIK? Most adults over the age of 21 who have had no change in their glasses or contact prescription in the past year are good candidates to consider laser vision correction. A free LASIK screening exam includes advanced diagnostics and eye analytics to determine the right surgical option to help you achieve your vision goals. IS LASIK SAFE? Like any surgery Laser vision correction does have associated risks. The rate of infection after LASIK is estimated to be around 0.09 percent. By comparison, the rate of eye infections for contact lens wearers could be as high as 1 in 100. Other side effects of LASIK include dry eye and night time glare, but these diminish over time as the eyes heal. A recent study by the FDA showed greater than 95 percent of patients were satisfied with their vision after LASIK. WILL LASIK WEAR OFF? The effect of LASIK is permanent; however, there are age related changes inside the eye which happen in your 40s and 50s. These affect the eye focus and quality of vision. In your 50s and 60s you may be eligible for cataract surgery which can restore your visual clarity and reduce your need for glasses. WHAT IS A CATARACT? A cataract develops when the clear natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy over time. This causes a degraded quality of vision that cannot be corrected by eye drops or a pair of glasses. A short and painless surgery can remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a new artificial lens giving you full visual function again and possibly reduce your dependence on glasses.

GASTROENTEROLOGY WHY DO I NEED TO SEE A GASTROENTEROLOGIST?

BRIAN HUGHES, MD Dr. Brian Hughes graduated from Wheaton College in Chicago and attended medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he graduated in 2005. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at UAMS and entered private practice in 2012.

WHAT IS A GASTROENTEROLOGIST?

A gastroenterologist is a physician who specializes in the gastrointestinal tract and treats digestive conditions. Gastroenterologists see patients in the clinic setting and perform endoscopic procedures. All our gastroenterologists are board-certified and highly trained. Many of our gastroenterologists further specialize in particular areas, such as esophageal disorders, medical weight loss and liver diseases.

If you have a family history of GI cancer, or if you suffer from digestive problems such as frequent abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or heartburn, something is affecting your digestive system. A gastroenterologist specializes in these conditions and can often help you feel better! If you are 45 years old (or older) you should consider having a routine cancer screening procedure called a colonoscopy. WHAT IS A COLONOSCOPY?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that enables a gastroenterologist to directly image and examine your colon. This is effective in the diagnosis or evaluation of GI disorders that can cause discomfort or turn into cancer. IS PREMIER GASTROENTEROLOGY A NEW PRACTICE?

My partners and I opened Premier Gastroenterology approximately two years ago, but we have all been practicing in Little Rock for many years. Our practice is dedicated to providing the highest quality digestive disease care, imparted in a warm, personal and genuine manner to all patients who need our help. We treat each and every patient like a family member, and our patients love us for it! WHERE IS PREMIER GASTROENTEROLOGY LOCATED?

We are located in our new Premier Medical Plaza, at 10915 N. Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock, in a former “big box” store that we converted into a state-of-the-art clinic and surgery center. This is a convenient location with easy access to I-430.

NEUROLOGY

CONWAY REGIONAL BHAVANA SHARMA, MD

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A NEUROLOGIST? Neurologists are physicians who specialize in the conditions of brain, spine and nerves. We usually see patients referred to us by primary care providers. Most common referrals are for headaches, tremors, memory decline, unsteadiness/falls, tingling and numbness, weakness, neuropathy, seizure, MS, mini-stroke, and stroke. WHAT CAUSES MIGRAINE HEADACHES? Migraine is a type of headache that is intense, usually one sided, associated with nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes a visual aura. Migraine is one of the most common reason for neurological referral. The cause of migraine is complex and involves several changes in the brain cortex, brain vessels, and trigeminal nerve. Most patients have a positive family history of migraine. Stress is the most common trigger, other triggers are lack of sleep/oversleeping, hunger, weather changes, menstrual cycle/hormonal changes, artificial sweeteners and poor dietary habits. Overuse of OTC pain medications and opiates can also cause or worsen the headaches. CAN YOU DISCUSS SLEEP APNEA? IS IT A SERIOUS ISSUE AND HOW DO YOU DETERMINE TREATMENT? There are two different types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central; however, some people have a combination of both. Obesity is the most common cause of obstructive sleep apnea. Cardiac conditions like heart failure can cause central sleep apnea, as well. Sleep apnea is a serious issue because it can increase the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Patients with sleep apnea are not able to get a good amount of oxygen during the sleep and have excess of CO2. They have fragmented sleep, are tired/ fatigued in the morning and have daily headaches. It can make diabetes and hypertension difficult to control and can worsen depression. Treatment is based on an overnight sleep study, which basically tells us about the type and severity of sleep apnea. During the sleep study, CPAP sleep devices can be tested, adjusted and then prescribed by sleep clinic providers.

ARE THERE WARNING SIGNS OF CERTAIN NEUROLOGICAL ISSUES THAT THE PUBLIC SHOULD BE AWARE OF? WHAT ARE THEY? There are certain warning symptoms of acute stroke or mini stroke (TIA) everyone should be aware of. These are sudden onset one sided weakness and/or numbness/lack of sensations, gait imbalance/falls, sudden loss of vision, facial drooping, slurred speech, inability to talk or make words together, and sensation of head spinning. There are warning signs of brain bleed everyone should know. These are similar to symptoms of stroke along with a severe headache usually described as the worst headache of one’s life. WHAT CAN I DO TO STAY HEALTHY FROM A NEUROLOGICAL STANDPOINT? The best way to prevent and slow down the progression of most of the neurological diseases is a healthy lifestyle. This includes a healthy diet low in carbohydrates, regular exercise, meditation and regular sleep. Healthy lifestyles also help reduce stress, weight management, better control of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and lowers the risk of stroke.

HOME BUILDER WHAT IF I AM HAVING A HARD TIME SOLIDIFYING MY VISION, BUT HAVE A GENERAL IDEA OF WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR?

KELLCO CUSTOM HOMES AM I LIMITED TO A CERTAIN PRICE RANGE WHEN BUILDING A CUSTOM HOME?

One of the most common mistakes made in the home building process is under-budgeting. The cost of building a home is based on many changing factors, such as size, location, labor and materials, and then there’s the current real estate trends to consider, which makes it impossible to nail down a perfectly accurate, one-size-fits-all. Building a home is a huge undertaking as is factoring in all expenses, which an experienced contractor should be able to do. Start the build process with an experienced licensed general contractor who knows the process. Be honest with yourself and your builder.

This is where having an experienced builder comes in. KellCo Custom Homes specializes in taking a build vision to the next level and creating a unique, one-of-a-kind home that will not only serve the needs of you and your family today, but for years ahead. Take the time to share with your builder your overall desires of the home and allow your builder to take it from there. I’D LIKE TO KEEP THINGS AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE. DO I HAVE TO CALL SOMEONE ELSE TO HELP ME WITH THE INTERIOR DESIGN?

Many builders are able and appreciate the opportunity to help their clients with a concise plan, up front, on an interior design. KellCo Custom Homes delivers a complete design package to help you execute the design starting with the architectural phase. Having a strong team on every level during construction is critical. WHAT KIND OF NEW HOME WARRANTY AND/OR INSURANCE SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR IN A HOME BUILDER?

Most home warranties are backed by the builder and can vary; some are purchased by the builder from an independent company that assumes responsibility for certain claims. Having a builders warranty is very important. Be sure to read over your contract agreement carefully as each contractor is different in offerings. In addition, a licensed general contractor should carry general liability insurance, workers compensation as well as builders risk insurance.

NORTH METRO’S ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR TAKES TIME TO TALK LEADERSHIP, NURSING, LIFE BALANCE I

magine being responsible for the nursing practices and patient care provided at three different hospitals by hundreds of employees on a 24/7 basis. Add to that, balancing a work life and a family life with three children, including a 10 and 12 year-old. “To me, it all comes down to teamwork, engagement and leadership,” says Angie Longing, MHSM, BSN, RN, NE-BC, who serves as the chief nursing officer for Conway Regional Health System, CHI-St. Vincent in Morrilton and for the Dardanelle Regional Medical Center. In all she is responsible for approximately 900 clinical employees. Longing was recognized as Administrator of the Year during the annual North Metro Healthcare Awards ceremony in February. The award recognizes and honors a member of a health care company’s leadership team who is dedicated to organizational quality, empowers his or her staff and team, and has a passion for improving the community they serve. Longing says she developed her own engaging, servant-leadership style from a number of role models over her 25-year career. “Servant leaders share power and put the needs of the employees first and that helps people develop and perform as highly as possible,” adds Longing. Servant leadership inverts the norm, which puts the customer service associates as a main priority. Longing says, “Instead of the people working to serve the leader, the leader exists to serve the people.” “I have served under many leaders during my career, but the best ones have always been fair and consistent, as well as realistic,” says Longing. “I think the most important thing is to listen to your team and understand where they are coming from. You can’t meet every request or demand, but the follow up is important. Helping the whole team understand the why behind the decisions is so imperative.” Longing has worked in almost every patient care position from floor nursing to upper level management. She was introduced to health care as a patient care tech at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.

Her first nursing job was as a registered nurse at what was formerly St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Morrilton. Longing achieved a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Central Arkansas and a master’s degree in health science management as she worked her way into the management team at CHI-St. Vincent. She was named chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services in June of 2016 for Conway Regional Health System. At Conway Regional, she is responsible for about 600 clinical employees and now has taken on chief nursing officer for CHI-St. Vincent Morrilton and Dardanelle Regional Medical Center, which is currently managed by Conway Regional. She is responsible for ensuring the quality of the nursing practices and patient care and is accountable for meeting budgetary goals for patient care at all three medical facilities. However, Longing’s primary goal is to foster a relationship of mutual trust and respect among the staff. She says, “I seek to encourage and motivate others to be their very best. I believe in and support personal development and building a strong team that can face obstacles and challenges. It’s important to keep a strong, positive culture in each organization as that’s what drives employee engagement and, ultimately, patient satisfaction.” She relies on a close-knit team of nurses and support staff to overcome the numerous challenges facing today’s nursing force. The latest challenge for Conway Regional is achieving a Magnet Designation for nursing. A site review is pending in April for the highly-acclaimed national designation. If approved, Conway Regional will be only the third nursing Magnet hospital in Arkansas. “The process is transformational,” says Longing. “This is not an overnight process, but it is a true story of how your organization embraces evidence based practice and implements the ideas and recommendations from front line nursing. It’s very important to me that nurses know that they have a

voice and can influence how they practice each and every day.” Q: Do you have any words of advice for aspiring career women and nurses? A: “Do what makes you happy and follow your calling. If you are a nurse who loves patient care and wants to be on the front line, then continue to provide direct care. If you feel led to manage your practice, find ways to gain leadership skills. Nursing leadership is not for the faint of heart. The nurse manager job is hands down one of the hardest jobs there is in health care as you are still so close to patient care as well as dealing with all of the responsibilities of staffing, payroll, budget, etc. One of the ways that health care often fails leaders is taking a good front line employee and promoting them to leadership without coaching and training. Ensure that you are getting what you need as a leader and asking for feedback is critical for success. I would also advise people to be bold, exceptional, and answer the call. This is the Conway Regional promise, and I feel it could be applied in any setting.” Q; How do you imagine the role of nurses as we move into the 2020s? What types of skills will they need? A: “Nurses today need to be multidimensional. With the development of electronic medical records and roles that require data skills (such as quality, nursing informatics, etc.), it is even more critical that nurses have computer and data skills. While patient interaction is very important, we now require even more of our nurses. They must chart electronically, understand orders, handle family issues and still deliver personal, individual care. The role of nursing is more difficult than it has ever been but also more impactful. Our patients and their families, more often than not, spend more time with the nurses than any other caregiver. It is important that our nurses can easily adapt from interpersonal communication skills to documentation, organizational and time management skills to ensure quality patient care.” Q: Is nursing still a fulfilling career? A: “There is great fulfillment in nursing. The beauty of being a nurse is you get to experience a mixture of faith and science. I am very interested in how modern medicine techniques have progressed during my own nursing career, but I have also witnessed true miracles that could only happen by the hand of God. For this reason, I believe that preventive care is very important, but I also believe that the hands that care for our patients are gifted and blessed by God. I pray for our health care workers daily as I believe they truly are God’s instruments each and every day.”
