Introducing a complete health system centered on creating a better state of health for every Arkansan.

You’ll find us in every corner of the state. We care for you through our hospital and clinics as well as deliver specialty care through our digital health connections — allowing patients to be seen by a UAMS health care provider without leaving home. For 140 years, you’ve known UAMS as the state’s health care leader… where the brightest minds deliver advanced treatments. What started with one campus in Little Rock in 1879 has evolved into a multi-campus clinical delivery system that includes regional campuses strategically placed across the state with plans to add more. More than a hospital. More than a health sciences university. And more than cuttingedge research. We are an integrated health system — one that serves all of the state, ensuring better access and, ultimately, a better state of health for each and every Arkansan.

SAY GOOD BYE TO CLOGGED GUTTERS!

A FIRST-CLASS TIME ... EVERY TIME ... FOR 60 YEARS. For the past 60 years, there’s been one name in trout fishing, and that’s Gaston’s. We’ve got everything you need for a family vacation, romantic getaway or group gathering, year-round. From world-class trout fishing to fine dining and drinks to just watching the river roll by, Gaston’s gets it right, every time.

Everyone needs a good quality home bar set up, one equipped with more than just the rudimentary basics. But for the layperson, stocking those shelves can seem a daunting task. But we’ve got friends in “boozy” places — namely, David Bevans and Jake Dell at Legacy Wine and Spirits in Little Rock, who hand-selected all the entries in this guide. Call it your starter kit to spirits; your instruction manual to intoxicants. Check out Legacy’s online registry, which is the perfect tool for parties, weddings, showers or any other type of get-together. If it’s not in the store, they can special order almost anything — glassware, decanters, cocktail tools, etc. — from high end to everyday use. Turn the pictures on this page into your new reality. Bevans and his staff are always available for in-store consulting to help you properly stock your home bar.

“Three Musketeers” in 2016 and the music video for artist Conor Oberst’s song, “Barbary Coast (Later),” which has garnered over 150,000 views on the singer-songwriter’s official YouTube page. “I was starting to book short films and film student projects pretty regularly, and then booked my first independent feature film,” Paxton recalls. “That’s when my mother thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and look for a manager and agent in Los Angeles. After that, things moved pretty quickly.” Paxton was asked to journey out to LA for episodic season, when many television shows fill guest and costar roles; whereas, series leads are generally cast during the preliminary, pilot season. One of his first auditions was for a new Netflix Original Series, “The Haunting of Hill House,” from creator Mike Flanagan (“Doctor Sleep,” “Oculus”). Just one call back later, the showrunners offered Paxton the role of young Steven. “They took a chance and booked this no-name kid,” Paxton humbly jokes. “The Haunting of Hill House” follows a group of siblings in present-day, whose current relationships are hindered by the hauntings of their past — growing up in Hill House. Because of the oft-used flashbacks showing what happened to them as children to explain the fractured paths they followed, the story is told in a rather nonlinear fashion; meaning Paxton, as well as

his other “young” costars, play pivotal and starring roles in the show. And the older version of Paxton’s character, Steven, was played by none other than Michiel Huisman, a fan favorite on the HBO series, “Game of Thrones.” Paxton and the rest of the cast and crew began filming the series in 2018, which was released on the streaming platform in October of that year. “My mom and I moved [to Atlanta] for about six months while shooting,” Paxton says. “Most of it was filmed on a soundstage, but we did the outside shots on location in a small town outside of Atlanta called LaGrange. That’s a real house. Of course, it’s not really ‘Hill House.’” After filming and post-production wrapped, the show was ready for the premiere, which presented Paxton with one of his coolest acting memories to date. “I walked the red carpet, did interviews, signed autographs and got to see myself on the big screen,” he says. “My mom, dad and brother were all there for it. It was really special.” According to Netflix, the show, which has been met with both audience and critical acclaim, was one of its most binged of 2018. Millions of viewers tuned in to watch, and they noticed Paxton. For the first time in his young career, someone recognized him on the street for his acting. “My mom and I were walking through

94

an outdoor mall in LA right after ‘Hill House’ came out,” he remembers. “We walked past a patio restaurant and a couple saw me walk by. They pointed and said, ‘That’s the kid from Hill House!’ I took a picture with them. It was a pretty proud moment.” But, painting a portrait of his true colors, the fame was not Paxton’s favorite part about starring in the project. Rather, it was the friendship he made with costar McKenna Grace (“Captain Marvel,” “Fuller House,” “Young Sheldon”), who portrays young Theo in the show. “When we are in the same city, or even state, we always try to get together,” Paxton shares. “She is a wonderful actress, but an even better person.” Also in 2018, Paxton guest-starred in an episode of the ABC television series, “The Rookie,” which is filmed in LA and led by Nathan Fillion, a journeyed actor of almost 30 years. “Although almost everyone is nice, Nathan Fillion might be the nicest and most polite,” he says of the actor, who is among Paxton’s favorites to have worked with. Last year, Paxton found himself back on another popular cable television show, landing a guest spot on an episode of the ABC series, “Chicago Med.” Thus far, this role is his most prized. “Though hard and challenging, in the end, I was the most proud of that performance,” he says.

He checked another network off the list in 2019 with a role in Fox’s “The Resident.” “This early in my career, I get to learn something new with each project,” Paxton says. “With ‘Chicago Med,’ I got to play a really heavy scene full of tears, ‘The Resident’ was my first experience with serious prosthetics, and ‘The Rookie’ was my first time working on a major Hollywood lot.” Amidst the notoriety and achievements, it was also in 2019 that Paxton made a consequential decision. Up to that point, he had been homeschooled for the three preceding years and traveled from coast to coast on film sets. But, at his core, he is a 15-year-old boy — a self-professed “sneakerhead” and car lover. He wanted to experience a traditional life for a little while. “I really wanted to have as much of a ‘real high school experience’ as possible, so this year I enrolled at the Arkansas Arts Academy,” Paxton says. “I’m actually not involved with any of the acting stuff that the school provides. I wanted school to be a break from that part of my life. So, I’ve been taking guitar, fashion design and creative writing.” But, he’s still an actor infatuated with his craft, just one who wants to slow down and eat his cake. “He didn’t want to audition for every part that came his way but just projects that really appeal to him,” his mother says of Paxton’s choice. “He didn’t want to travel for audition seasons … So, when we’re home, everything is pretty much normal, and his acting career is a very small part of our lives. However, everything goes into

high gear when we receive an email that he has an audition.” When those calls come, it’s back to the fridge with the slice of iced dessert but only temporarily. A call that Paxton is interested in usually means that within only a couple of days he must prepare and send in an audition tape. If he books, his mother estimates they are usually on a plane within 24 to 48 hours — gone for anywhere from two weeks to six months. “This is why the whole family has to be on board,” Cortney says. “It takes a lot of help to pull it off.” The family also includes a younger son, Tasker, and father, namesake Paxton Singleton. For mom and dad, their own version of normalcy has developed over the years. “I sort of feel like I live two separate lives,” Cortney says. “One where I’m just a mom taking care of my people, and another where I’m on movie sets and talking to actors that I’ve followed most of my life. I go to my younger son’s sports events, and I go to my older son’s red carpet premiere. “I have the same goal for both of my boys. When it’s all said and done, I just want to raise good men that are good husbands and fathers. I want them to be kind; I want them to be respectful of others; I want them to help those in need. I just want them to be good people who are content in their lives. That’s it. They get to fill in all the gaps as they choose.” Paxton just happens to have filled in one of those gaps with acting. And he’s done a fine job of it, so far.

95

For him, the aims are simple, as grounded as his nature. “In this business, you just work your hardest and hope for the best,” he says. But if pressed, he can easily come up with an even more specific goal. “I’d love to get to work with Leo [DiCaprio].” Keep a keen eye on your screens this year. We already know Paxton is starring in the 2020 film, “Alice Fades Away,” but you never know what major television network he will appear on next.

The next year, Lauren was chosen to star as the main character, Mia, of another short film, entitled “The Birthday Bully.” At the film’s core was an anti-bullying message, as Mia is introduced as a young student struggling to fit in at a new school. When the most popular girl in class invites Lauren’s character to her birthday party (without the best intentions), what develops becomes essentially a “Mean Girls” for a younger demographic. “The Birthday Bully” has since garnered nearly 7 million views on YouTube and has been screened at schools across the state of Arkansas and beyond in conjunction with anti-bullying campaigns. “There are kids that recognize her all the time from it,” Kelly says. Lauren’s first feature role came in 2018 with the horror drama, “Then the Night Comes,” which was shortly followed by the horror film “Indestructible: Afterlife.” In the same year, she starred in what is perhaps her most significant big-screen role to date in another horror movie, “It Knows.” As she tells it, her mother’s friend, Christen Pitts, told the Lasseignes about auditions being open for the movie. Lauren sent in a video of her talents for the audition and was then selected for an in-person callback. And as fate would have it, starring also in “It Knows,” of whom Lauren played a younger version, was a fellow central Arkansas gal — Carmen Patterson. “Filming ‘It Knows’ was the most fun I have ever had,” Lauren says. “A majority of the movie was filmed in Mississippi [and] Tennessee. My favorite part was meeting all of the people on set ... We loved to tell jokes. In one scene, we added a funny, unscripted joke in.” “Which was her idea,” her mother adds proudly. For this role as young Claire in “It Knows,” Lauren got her first taste of accolades on the national and international level. She won runner-up in the category of Best Young Performer at the Action on Film International Film Festival XIII, Best Youth Performer at the Hollywood Dreamz International Film Festival and also won Best Youth Actor at the Austin Revolutionary Film Festival. But Lauren has not rested on her laurels of a mantle now weighed down by multiple awards, the first of many that are sure to continue coming her way. At only 11-years old,

she puts in more work than many adults in the industry, and at all three major levels: theater, movies and television. Last year, she reprised her role as Stephanie Kersey in the follow-up to 2018’s “Afterlife,” “Indestructible: Reckoning.” This year, the horror franchise’s fourth installment, “Indestructible: No Place to Hide,” is set to be released. “I honestly have no clue why I do so much horror stuff,” Lauren jokes. But it is certainly no question as to why the genre — or any for that matter — is drawn to her talents. During the same span of her catapult into the film scene, she has not slowed down in her theater endeavors, starring in “During Wind and Rain” and “A Christmas Carol” (three different times) at Argenta Community Theater, “Annie” at The Weekend Theater, “Willy Wonka Jr.” at the Arkansas Repertory Theater. She has also participated in three performances of the “Nutcracker Ballet” for Ballet Arkansas and “Frozen Junior” at The Studio Theater, in which she played Elsa. No matter the success, Lauren continues to stay grounded and humble, limiting her most lofty acting aspirations to simply serving as an inspiration to other budding actors and actresses. It’s through her parents that this humility has been instilled. “I want her to be happy and always treat people with kindness,” Kelly says. Her parents want her to do what she loves, love herself and others, but also go to school and keep her grades up. “She needs to continue to be a kid.” Lauren has also sung the National Anthem at sporting events for the Arkansas Travelers, University of Arkansas Women’s Basketball and for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans. Triple threat might actually be an understatement.

in that movie include Sean Astin (“The Goonies,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Stranger Things”) and Kelsey Grammer (“Cheers,” “Frasier”). “I don’t ever tell her who anybody is because I want her to have an authentic connection with them,” Timie says. “So, [Grammer] is filming, and she’s watching him. He wraps, and he comes and sits in there — in those actor chairs — right beside Hendrix. She looks at him and she says, ‘I’ve been watching you back here, and I just want to tell you, you’re a really good actor.’ And he was like, ‘Thank you, I appreciate that.’ … After about five minutes of talking to him, she looked at him, so authentically, and she said, ‘Kelsey, have you ever considered maybe being a comedian?’ “He’s very sweet. You can tell he has daughters.” Hendrix also became friends with Astin while on set for that film. He taught her a magic trick which she has since perfected and shows off any chance she can. 2020 is shaping up to be another busy

year for the Yancey family. In addition to the release of “Charming the Hearts of Men,” Hendrix will also star in the horror mystery, “Dweller,” which has wrapped up filming and is in post-production. This spring, mom and daughter are both back in LA for at least multiple months, as the actress is once again pitching her talents to executives at auditions for pilot season. This after spending time in both Atlanta and Nashville over the past two months. It’s a lifestyle that took some getting used to — it often interrupts vacations — but the Yanceys have learned to relish it. “The first time we went to LA, we didn’t know anybody,” Timie says. “It was really lonely — me and a five-yearold. Now we’ve spent so much time there that we actually have a really good group of friends. So, it’s cool to get the kids together … And you see these kids, and they have these crazy, unbelievable resumes. But then, when you get them together, they’re absolutely, 100 percent, normal kids.” “You have to literally take one day at a time, or you will absolutely go crazy,” Timie goes on to say. “I know where [we’re] supposed to be today and at any point, where we’re supposed to be tomorrow can change … We can’t even book return flights.” But with a natural-born talent like Hendrix’s, her dreams and happiness are worth the sacrifices. “It’s amazing to me how crazy awesome she is on set,” Timie says in awe of her daughter. “She is able to focus and take direction like an adult. “I just want her to be happy. Acting is both everything and nothing that I expected it to be, but I hope for her that it not only fulfills that outlet that she needs for her creativity, but it opens doors for her to do whatever she wants to do.”

ARKANSAS’

ABANDONED ARTIFACTS Hallie’s Zoo - A New Beginning By RYAN NIX Photos By JAMISON MOSLEY

This is the second entry in a series on Arkansas’ abandoned amusement parks. See our January issue or go to aymag.com for the first entry, an article on Dogpatch USA. Make sure to check back in with us next month when we cover Dinosaur World, a veritable garden of derelict dinosaur sculptures in Eureka Springs. Believe it or not, the Ozark foothills were once home to more than one half-baked amusement park. Just outside the sleepy hamlet of Dennard, the legend goes that a man, reportedly named Hallie “Orman,” decided to open his own zoo in 1967. Hoping to create a roadside stop for tourists traveling toward Dogpatch USA, the captive animals at Hallie’s Zoo captivated Arkansans for several years, but after a change in ownership and a series of mishaps, Arkansas’ only privately-owned zoo faded almost completely from memory and record.

Inside the Zoo Church Village Sanctuary. Note the oak framing, originally cut from Ormond’s sawmills.

CAGED HEAT The zoo’s 6,000 acres of metal enclosures and wooded enclaves spanned Van Buren and Searcy counties. Hallie’s Zoo boasted a restaurant, gift shop and ice cream bar, while featuring a variety of wildlife including tigers, bears, spider monkeys, leopards and angora goats. Beyond the animals, the zoo also contained the world’s tallest miniature train, rising 31 feet above the ground. While this is a somewhat-narrow superlative (how crowded could the field of raised miniature trains be?), it did provide riders a unique view of the zoo’s animal occupants and the surrounding Ozark forests, all at the low price of $3.50. With these attractions, Hallie successfully marketed his roadside diversion for several years. According to the current owner of the property, he created the zoo to give his aging daughters something to do, fearing they’d become spinsters after his death. One wonders why he thought they’d be better off running a zoo instead of a trust fund or an investment portfolio, but his daughters both wound up marrying Harrison-area doctors, rendering Hallie’s eccentric plans for their inheritance irrelevant. At this point, the historical record on Hallie’s Zoo becomes somewhat murky, along with the fate of the owner himself. The Van Buren County Democrat, a long-running local newspaper has no record of “Orman” or his zoo, nor is his name referenced in any obituaries or genealogies. In fact, aside from a few online articles written within the past decade, there is no evidence that a man named Hallie Orman even lived in Arkansas or ran an Ozark menagerie.

113

aymag.com

Rick Montgomery, head pastor at the Zoo Church Village.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HALLIE Confusing, right? Well, after a bit of research, it turns out that the man who created Hallie’s Zoo wasn’t named Hallie Orman. His name was Hallie Charles Ormond, a Harrison sawmill magnate. According to a June 1974 article in The Camden News, Ormond’s roadside attraction outside of Dennard wasn’t named “Hallie’s Zoo,” it was called “Hallie’s Rest Stop,” which featured “A miniature railroad, a zoo, pony rides, arcade games a campground and restaurant.” Contrary to the readily-available sources, Hallie’s Rest Stop, a.k.a. Hallie’s Zoo, also didn’t open in 1967. According to contemporary sources, it opened on Labor Day, 1973, when Ormond was 68 years old, and was just one fruit of Ormond’s many labors. He first moved to Elba, Arkansas, in 1911, now a ghost town outside of Dennard. Ormond worked for Missouri and North Arkansas Railways in the 1930s until he decided to go into business for himself in 1938, opening the H.C. Ormond Supply Company, which produced railroad ties and lumber from multiple sawmills. By age 70, Ormond had amassed 15,000 acres in Van Buren and Searcy counties, roughly 40 of which he used for his zoo and rest stop. According to his daughter, Mary Jo Grisham, he was an early investor in Dogpatch USA and designed its train system, which he later used as a model for the miniature train at his own amusement park. Ormond was also close friends with controversial Arkansas governor Orval Faubus, which may either explain why Faubus was Dogpatch’s first general manager or why Ormond invested so heavily in Dogpatch. Grisham also states that Ormond was well known for

114

calling most men “honey,” which the recipients of his endearments either found strangely charming or vaguely threatening. “Well, originally it was called ‘Hallie’s Rest Stop and Zoo,’” says Grisham. “Honestly, I think he was just bored and wanted to tackle another project.” Grisham has fond memories of Hallie’s Rest Stop and Zoo, stating “It was a beautiful place with an incredible view of Heartsugg Valley. My sister and I loved it there.” THE FATE OF HALLIE’S ZOO At this point, the story behind Hallie’s Rest Stop becomes murky once again. It’s known that Ormond sold the property to a Texas couple in the late 1970s, who were also trying to develop a subdivision nearby. Evidently that subdivision didn’t pan out, nor did the zoo fair any better. The final nail in the coffin was struck when one of the zoo’s lions escaped its enclosure and began roaming the Ozark hillsides. While the fugitive feline didn’t attack anyone or kill any livestock, the locals were understandably perturbed that a 400-pound predator was prowling through their lands. The lion apparently got hungry and returned home after two weeks, but by that time Van Buren County

officials realized their local laws prohibit the presence of exotic animals. They’d allowed Ormond to skirt these rules, considering his huge tracts of land and community investment, but unfortunately the new owners lacked any friends at the Van Buren Quorum Court. The remaining animals were auctioned off to other zoos. Hallie’s Rest Stop shut down and Ormond himself passed away in 1998. FROM THE ASHES After the zoo closed, the property sat dormant for nearly 30 years. Nature slowly reclaimed the abandoned park’s rusting cages and rotting train trestles. It seemed that the zoo’s future promised nothing but further ruin. Then, one day in 2010, Baptist pastor Rick Montgomery drove past the property. “I’d been pastoring in Marshall for over 10 years. In all the time driving back and forth from our home in Conway we hadn’t seen this property,

“During Phase Two, our clients stay in our houses in Conway and Dennard, and pretty soon they’ll be able to stay in a new house in Hollister, Mo.,” says Montgomery. “After we help them find work, they pay us $50 a week in rent. That way, they can focus on saving money, getting a vehicle or regaining a driver’s license while we continue monitoring their progress and drug testing them.” The ZOO program is free to enter, but so far the number of clients has hovered around 12-14 at a time due to financial constraints. “We cover all the housing and food costs for our clients. However, our program is biblically-based, so we don’t receive funding from the state or federal governments,” says Montgomery. “For that reason, we have to raise money every month to keep it open. It costs $4,000-6,000 every month to run the place with all-volunteer employees.” Beyond passing the plate on Sundays, Montgomery and the ZOO men travel to other churches on Sunday nights, sharing their stories Don Prewitt, campus pastor, worship leader and member of the ZOO program.

it’d been so overgrown,” says Montgomery. “On the way to church one Sunday morning I felt like God had told me to look to my left and I saw this property. We called the owners in Dallas, and the rest is history.” Thus began the strange second life of Hallie’s Zoo/Rest Stop, which is now the Zoo Church Village. Since 2010, Montgomery and his wife Fritzi have shepherded Van Buren County worshippers while rebuilding the old zoo they now live and work in. While an abandoned zoo is an eccentric location for a church, apparently its unique topography gives the church unusual decorative and programming opportunities. “We cleaned up all the cages and areas; we actually use them in the fall and winter for ‘Biblical who’s who at the zoo.’ We have actors playing biblical characters in the zoo’s cages,” says Montgomery. The Zoo Church Village is also home to the Zoo Outfitters Operation (ZOO), a faith-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for men. “We’ve been running ZOO for three years; right now we have about a dozen clients. We help these men recover from meth, opiate and alcohol addictions, and support them in rebuilding their lives,” says Montgomery. According to Montgomery, 61.7 percent of ZOO clients have recovered from their addictions. To put that in perspective, Alcoholics Anonymous reports a roughly 50 percent success rate for its program. ZOO is a two-phase program. During the six months of phase one, the men live full-time at the Zoo Church Village. Every morning, ZOO clients take clients with church staff and volunteer counselors. After lunch, they perform community service around Van Buren County and within the zoo itself. Successful graduates of this program enter the second phase, where ZOO attempts to reintegrate its clients into society.

115

and fundraising. They also use proceeds from the church’s gift shop, the “Zoopermarket,” where they sell locally-made jams, jellies and quilts. Montgomery, obviously a big fan of puns, also created the “He-Brews” cafe, where visitors and church members can sip and enjoy the vibrant surroundings. The Zoo Church Village regularly streams Sunday and Wednesday night services on Facebook, where they’ve received thousands of views. “Our regular Sunday attendance is around 70, and as of right now we have 30 members,” says Montgomery, who explains the reason for that disparity is due to the men in the ZOO program. “After a 28-day seclusion period, we allow them to have visitors on Sunday, so long as they attend the service first,” he says. Montgomery and his staff have worked for years to rescue Hallie’s, repurposing the old zoo for a higher calling. “We’ve completely restored and remodeled the buildings and other structures. If we hadn’t come here when we did, none of the buildings would still be standing,” Montgomery says. Hallie Ormond’s roadside attraction has walked a fascinating path, as most abandoned amusement parks simply rust into mere memory. Instead, Montgomery transformed Hallie’s Road Stop from a husk of a zoo to a vibrant, community-minded church, preserving a piece of local history and utilizing it to positively impact everyone they can touch. “The zoo is the perfect place for us, and right for the Van Buren County community. The people here are wonderful and the view from the zoo is just spectacular,” Montgomery says. “The Zoo Church Village is just a great, peaceful place.” aymag.com

AGE AND OPIOIDS. Know your risks. Some prescription pain medications known as opioids carry serious risks with long-term use. They cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation or confusion. You can become physically dependent on them. Plus, accidental opioid overdoses can result in dangerously slowed breathing or sudden death. You are at greater risk for side effects from opioid medications if you are 65 or older and have: •

A history of drug misuse, substance use problems, or overdose

A mental health condition like depression or anxiety

Memory loss or dementia

Problems walking or have experienced falls or dizziness

Sleep apnea breathing problems

If you’re prescribed opioids, it’s very important that you take them only as directed. Because the biggest pain with opioids is the risk.
