SHAKESPEARE

By TRACY COURAGE

CHAD BRADFORD IN 2017’S THE MUSIC MAN

W

hile 13 may be considered an unlucky number, Arkansas Shakespeare Theater celebrates the start of its 13th season this month with a selection of the Bard’s works that embraces the theme of “Fate and Chance.” “It wasn’t by chance that we chose this theme for our 13th anniversary,” says Rebekah Scallet, AST’s producing artistic director for the past eight years. “I’m always looking for a way to connect the experience for the audience and help them see the shows in context of one another. It’s always my hope they will come see everything, and the theme will help them create a conversation and find new things in the plays.” The result is a carefully curated selection of works representative of Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies and histories – with the added bonus of a musical. The company will perform more than 30 shows during its month-long season running June 7-July 7 with performances taking place at the University of Central Arkansas. The Comedy of Errors, directed by Houston Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Jack Young, kicks off this year’s line-up and will be performed on the lawn in front of McAlister Hall on the UCA campus. The plot revolves around two sets of twins separated at birth. “Fate brings them together and comedy ensues,” Scallet says. Nowhere is the theme of fate and chance more prominent than in Romeo and Juliet, in which the audience learns in the prologue that “a pair of starcross’d lovers take their life.” Tommy Novak directs this one-hour, family-friendly adaptation in Reynolds Performance Hall. Fate also plays prominently in Macbeth, when three witches meet an unsuspecting Macbeth and hail him as the future king of Scotland. And lastly, the idea of fate and chance is obvious in this year’s musical Guys and Dolls about highrolling gambler Sky Masterson, who bets on love and luck. Jenna Elser directs the musical, which opens June 15 in Reynolds Performance Hall A musical has always been part of the season since AST began in 2007. When Scallet was hired as artistic director in 2012, she decided to stick with tradition and included Big River in the season. “After doing it, I realized how vital the musical is to the overall work we do,” she says. “Our mission

38

is about making Shakespeare, and theater in general, accessible and engaging, and musicals do that extraordinarily well. I think we reach more people through the musical, but once they come and get to know our space, our performers and the kind of work we do, they are more than likely to come back to one of our other shows.” New this year is an AST Institute, a series of in-depth talks and workshops offered alongside the productions to the general public. Scallet, who directs Macbeth, will give a pre-show talk about the play to share insight with the audience as to artistic choices and her approach to productions. Another event will feature a talk and book signing with AST actor Paige Reynolds, author of Performing Shakespeare’s Women: Playing Dead. Reynolds is an associate professor of English who teaches Shakespeare and drama at UCA. She will appear as Angelo in The Comedy of Errors and as a witch in Macbeth. This year’s ensemble includes about 100 actors, technicians, directors and behind-the-scenes personnel, who are a mix of union and non-union actors, teaching artists, interns, and central Arkansas youth. Some of this year’s returning actors are members of the Artistic Collective, a group of artists who are performing nationwide but consider AST their artistic home. Chad Bradford, an AST alumnus and UCA graduate, will be back this summer performing as Macduff in Macbeth, as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, and as the Duke in The Comedy of Errors. Originally from Little Rock, Bradford has worked across the country and has returned to Conway every summer but one since 2012. Last summer, he was a teaching artist and co-directed The Groundlings youth company. “AST is my artistic home,” says Bradford, who is now the associate artistic director of Shake on the Lake in Silver Lake, New York. “I get to use all my skills as a composer, a director, a teaching artist, a singer, an actor. It’s why I keep coming back. I get to express myself so fully.” More information about Arkansas Shakespeare Theater and the schedule of performances can be found online at www.arkshakes.com.

ARTISTIC

VISION Arkansas Arts Center launches $128 million capital campaign to renovate and revitalize the Little Rock museum; $118 million already raised.

AY Managing Editor Chris Price, AAC Capital Campaign co-chairs Warren Stephens, Harriet Stephens and AY Publisher Heather Baker.

L

eaders and benefactors of the Arkansas Arts Center have announced a bold, new vision for the Little Rock museum and the launch of a $128 million capital campaign to renovate and expand the institution. Entitled “Reimaging the Arkansas Arts Center: Campaign for Our Cultural Future,” $118 million has already been committed to the project, according to campaign co-chairs Harriet and Warren Stephens. “The new Arkansas Arts Center will stand as a noted architectural treasure in the heart of Arkansas, serving even more young people and adults and attracting visitors from throughout the city, state, region, and nation,” Warren Stephens says. The Arkansas Arts Center’s roots date back to 1914. Its original building, the Museum of Fine Arts, was built by the Works Progress Administration in 1937 and has been added on to seven times since. The renovations to the existing buildings will include removal of some current areas to facilitate the creation of new spaces for gatherings and community events. A two-story glass atrium will connect the galleries, the Museum School and the Children’s Theatre. There will be a new visitor entrance hall and courtyard that will feature the refurbished Art Deco façade of the original 1937 building. A new, covered entrance, featuring a 5,000-square-foot “cultural living room” will be added to the semi-circle on the center’s north side. A new restaurant will be incorporated into the center’s south end and will protrude into the park, which will see the addition of shaded outdoor seating, walking paths, a 10,000-square-foot plaza and landscape features, including the addition of 250 new trees, including oaks and cypresses, to blend the architecture with the environment. As part of the renovation, the galleries that house the AAC’s art collection will be updated to create a “world-class visitor experience,” says AAC Interim Executive Director Laine Harber. The Museum School’s facilities will be renovated to increase the education offerings and improve student experience. The Children’s Theatre will feature new lighting, sound and rigging systems, along with control rooms, audience seating, a black box theatre expansion, dressing rooms and a new costume shop. The arts center’s redesign is being helmed by Jeanne Gang and her Chicago-based firm, Studio Gang. Her focus is to create gathering spaces that will be “flooded with natural light” and meld the center with MacArthur Park. Meanwhile, Kat Orff and SCAPE will be responsible for revitalizing the landscape surrounding the arts center. “Our design reimagines the Arkansas Arts Center to unlock new connections between an extraordinary art collection, thriving Museum School and Children’s Theatre,” Gang says. “Along with much-needed renovations, new day-lit spaces linked through the core of the center will facilitate movement and create a series of vibrant, new public spaces for social interaction, education and appreciation for the arts.” Campaign co-chair Harriet Stephens praised Gang for her design and its environmental aspects.

“That’s part of her genius – she combines the building with the environment, and for us, that was really important to make McArthur Park part of the Arkansas Arts Center,” she says. Warren Stephens says the project will have a beneficial effect on the surrounding MacArthur Park Historic District and beyond. “It’s going to impact the neighborhood very, very positively. And it’s going to impact Little Rock very positively and the state. We couldn’t be more excited about where we are and where the design is,” he says. The City of Little Rock has already committed $31.25 million to the campaign, which will be generated through a hotel-tax revenue bond. The Windgate Foundation contributed a lead campaign gift of $35 million, and the Museum School will be named the Windgate Foundation Museum School, and the museum gallery will be named the Robyn and John Horn Museum School Gallery. The Stephenses made a “transformational lead gift” to support the campaign. The new AAC galleries will be named the Harriet and Warren Stephens Galleries in their honor. Twenty-one individuals, families and foundations have contributed gifts of $21 million or more. “A remarkable group has come together with a clear understanding of the importance of reimagining the Arkansas Arts Center for the 21st century,” Harriet Stephens said in a statement. “We will now reach out to the entire community and state for support to realize this once-in-alifetime project. Together, we can ensure that the Arkansas Arts Center is a thriving and influential cultural institution for present and future generations.” With the current thought in teaching trending toward science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes, Warren Stephens says access to the arts remains important to securing a well-rounded education. “It means so much, and it just expands your horizons,” he says. “I think people want to be exposed to art, and they want their children exposed to art.” Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., calls the project a “bold vision, a beacon of light for the city, region and state.” He says the center will “help us become a catalyst in the New South.” June 30 will be the last day the center’s galleries will be open before the collection temporarily relocates during the renovation to the Riverdale Shopping Center at 2510 Cantrell Road in Little Rock, Harber says. “We are so excited about the future of a reinvigorated Arkansas Arts Center - a center with expanded exhibitions and programs that will serve even more patrons of all ages than ever before,” Harber says. “We’ll need everyone’s partnership and support during the transition and opening, and we look forward to working with the entire community and state on this amazing project!” The reimagined Arkansas Arts Center is expected to open in early 2022.

Katherine BLACKMON CARROLL “IT’S ABOUT THE JOURNEY. IT’S ABOUT HELPING EMPOWER PEOPLE TO BE THE BEST THEY CAN BE.” “I’ve always been a ‘fixer,’ and I realized that as an attorney, I can help. I can help people ‘fix’ their situations through family law.” Katherine Blackmon Carroll is a quintessential attorney, life and health coach. For more than two decades, Katherine and her team have provided a unique approach to family law. It takes a special kind of attorney to treat every aspect of a person’s life - mind, body and spirit. Katherine knows it’s so much more than winning a case. “It’s about the journey. It’s about helping empower people to be the best they can be. It’s helping guide a client through one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives and reassuring them that it will be ok.” Katherine fiercely represents hundreds of clients in family law. She also listens quietly and empathically with a never-ending supply of tissue. “I’m a people person. It’s worthwhile to remember that clients and customers are all people. People with their own backstories, heartbreak, and pain. For those of us who get to walk with them, in whatever capacity we are able, what a privilege,” she says. “I have a reputation for being aggressive on my client’s behalf, but I recognize not every case should end up in court,” she says, “I want my clients to know they have options. If I have to go to trial, opposing counsel better be ready because I will be prepared.” No one can better describe the passion Katherine has for helping people through family law than her clients. “Katherine was not our first attorney but our last. She rescued us from a stormy sea. She restored our confidence and dignity. She believed us and in us when we were battered about and adrift. Katherine and her team did “homework” and did it extremely well. The results of their tireless efforts saved us much time and money as the opposing party caved under Katherine’s intense questioning to bring out the truth. We are ever grateful to God for sending us this team of professionals, and highly

recommend them to others.” “Katherine was AMAZING!!!! She was FIERCE in the courtroom. She truly has a passion for helping families. I had never been in a courtroom setting before and she blew me away. I was very impressed. I will continue to work with her and I highly recommend her. She is nothing to mess with.” “The best attribute of Katherine and her staff is their ability to convey your crisis/problem/battle. As if that weren’t enough, their courtroom skills are spectacular. To watch Katherine question or cross-examine a witness is a true work of art. It is like watching a pro golfer knock the hide off a ball. She doesn’t look or sound intimidating, which is just one of the weapons in her arsenal. I think enough of her to place my family’s future well-being in her hands. I can’t imagine a better recommendation than that.”

We limit our fee so that we don’t receive a higher percentage of the whole than you do. We will do everything we reasonably can do to represent our clients well, ethically and professionally. ?

Here’s the expert Erin Brady, owner of By Invitation Only, addressing the most common questions a bride has.

Q: What’s it going to cost?

A: Prices vary based on several factors. We pride ourselves in working within any budget. If a bride desires an invitation that is out of her price range, we work hard to achieve the look she wants at a lower cost.

Q: What’s the turnaround time?

A: That varies, but we can get it turned around in a week if you’re really in a hurry. Eight weeks is typical on many custom orders.

Q: What else can you do for me?

A: We offer an array of items that you can’t find at other stores. We have artists on staff who create custom maps and monograms. If you can dream it, we can do it!

Happy Dance By LISA FISCHER

A clean home gives peace of mind, relaxation

A

n amazing event happens every other Tuesday at “Chez Fischer.” A two-person team of uniformed Molly Maid employees comes to my home and works magic. It is white-glove clean, and it is done with all of their equipment; all I have to provide is the dwelling, which, in your case, could be your apartment or ] home. That could be a mansion or a shanty. They come professionally attired and thoroughly trained to clean your home.

Speaking of the training, the teams go through a ton of it before they come clean your home. Don’t think they hire people who say, “Cleaning relaxes me” or “I’m O.C.D. I love to clean.” This type of cleaning isn’t relaxing! My team of Carolina and Patty has been coming to my home every other week for 10 years now. They never call to say they have a sick kid or a flat tire and can’t make it. If they did, Molly Maid would send out backup. And they have. sponsored content

Patty was sick once, and a substitute was sent with Carolina so that my every-other-Tuesday obligation was fulfilled. In fact, a supervisor also comes afterward to make sure everything was done to Fischer (or insert your name here) specifications. They know the nuances of my home. They keep up with that information in my “chart.” Yeah, I have a chart. They also have a key to my home and know the alarm codes. I trust them implicitly. You can have a team from Molly Maid clean your abode any Monday through Friday once a week, every two weeks – their most popular frequency, or just once. But that never happens! Everyone wants them to come back after that “just once” cleaning. The Silva-Nash family operates the offices, and they are known for their award-winning customer service and attention to detail. Go ahead and call them today. In fact, surprise Dad for Father’s Day with a cleaning; I surprised my daughter last month. Best Mother’s Day gift ever, she says. For more information or to make an appointment, call 501-758-9996 in Central Arkansas or 479-802-5333 in northwest Arkansas, or logon to mollymaid.com. You’ll thank me later.
