Dr. Columbus Brown is a physician specializing in Rheumatology and has found that pain management has to be administered on many levels. Patients often come in with conditions such as osteoarthritis, an arthritic condition affecting the joints, and fibromyalgia, which is a pain condition syndrome that affects the brain. Dr. Brown believes both physical and mental therapy are necessary when dealing with people with chronic pain. He admits that his work day is not complete until one of his patients cries in his office. There is no current treatment for osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia. There are medications, shot therapies, surgical options and lifestyle changes that can help lessen the effects of these conditions, but the pain may never completely subside. With these odds, patients are likely to experience feelings of depression. The best results patients can expect are only achieved when they follow their physician’s instructions. Along with medical treatment, healthy eating, physical exercise and stress relieving techniques are key in pain management. aymag.com . 21

Mayor Mark Stodola, courtesy of City of Little Rock
Square’ feel,” Stodola said. The city received a second grant from the EPA to address water quality. “There are 7,226 parking spaces within close proximity of Main Street from Markham to Seventh Street. This is good for patrons,” Stodola said, but it’s not so good for water quality. The EPA Grant and the Greening of America’s Capitals Grant addresses “how to manage stormwater and improve the public right of way” with rain gardens, native plants, green roofs, green alleys and permeable paving as well as new crosswalks, bike routes and racks, shaded sidewalks and an expanded trolley route. This year, the vision for the Creative Corridor, with art galleries, restaurants, residences, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Arkansas and The Arkansas Repertory Theater, began to take shape as projects in the 300 block of Main Street were completed and construction began in earnest farther down the street. “Downtown is the heartbeat of the state, and Main Street is the heartbeat of downtown. It’s vital that we invest in downtown Little Rock,” Stodola said. “With the addition of the three hotels, and more will come, the River Market District, the Clinton Library, the eight museums and the $68-million renovation of the Robinson Center, which buttresses the corridor, downtown Little Rock is truly an exciting place to be — it’s no wonder Kiplinger named Little Rock one of the 10 Best Places to Live.”
Look for partners … they are invaluable in providing support and getting a project off the ground …** The revitalization of downtown Little Rock can be traced to the development at 400 Pres. Clinton Avenue. That’s the address of the Little Rock River Market. Sharon Priest, executive director of the Downtown Little Rock Partnership, said the addition of the Market Hall was the beginning of the resurgence. “Downtown fell into decline in the late 26 . NOVEMBER 2013
‘80s,” Priest said. “Public dollars were invested in downtown first, then private [dollars]. With the advent of the Clinton Presidential Library and Heifer International and the businesses that followed, turning the corner onto Main Street came next.” Today, Main is bustling with activity. “We recently hosted the third Food Truck Festival [on Main Street and Capitol Avenue]; the Mann Building is finished and full; construction on the 300 and 500 blocks is well underway; and South Main is flourishing,” Priest said. Priest named several companies and individuals as key to the progress of downtown but also pointed out the importance of Gov. Beebe’s commitment to the area. “The state of Arkansas has maintained a presence downtown with offices in the Main Street Mall, the old Dillard’s building and now the Mann Building … state government has made a considerable investment downtown.” “Mayor Stodola has certainly been dedicated to downtown. While he’s worked to improve the entire city, he’s stressed that if you don’t have a healthy downtown, you don’t have a healthy city,” Priest said. Priest noted business owners like the Bennett family of Bennett’s Military Supplies, who remain dedicated to downtown, as well as new business owners, such as Brad McCray and Michael Peace. “They’re the type of folks who believe in downtown and what’s happening here. They made an early commitment, and it wasn’t easy to be such a unique business or to be the first restaurant to open in the area,” she said. McCray leases the space that once housed the popular, though short-lived Porters Jazz Café and its reincarnation Montego Café. He will again reinvent the space, opening Club Level on Halloween night. “We knew that in order to make downtown attractive we’d have to have a 24-7 community, an area in which people live, work and play,” Priest said. Looking forward, she said she’d like to see additional retail downtown. “We need more soft goods … stores that sell clothing, gifts and such. I grew up in Montreal and spent my lunch hours downtown shopping for shoes — I’m a shoe person. We need more retailers, like the museums stores, who sell souvenirs, children’s items and more items that we often think of as touristy.” “There’s always something to do downtown,” Priest said, explaining her love for the area, “whether it’s educational or recreational … and it’s all within walking distance.”
Let There Be Light L
ittle Rock Mayor Mark Stodola has invested quite a bit of thought into the question: how do we get people to come to Arkansas and how do we get them to come downtown and stay? One way is by lighting the city; it’s not only attractive, it may also help lower the crime rate. Stodola had the idea of replacing the cityowned and maintained lighting with LED lighting in hopes that the savings would generate enough capital to light downtown’s Main Street, Junction and Clinton Bridges. He said, “There’s not really a way to change the lights out and make enough money to do so. However, Entergy Arkansas is celebrating its 100th birthday and is making a generous gift to the communities of Little Rock and North Little Rock by donating $2 million to light the three bridges with the latest and greatest LED lighting.” Stodola said, “With the technology Entergy is using, there will literally be millions of variations of lights possible.” With the inclusion of the Two Rivers and Big Dam Bridges, the five bridges will make for an attraction similar to bridges in Istanbul and Sydney as well as in Oakland Bay, Calif., Tampa, Fla., and Boston, Mass., he said. The dedication ceremony will be held Dec. 19; the bridges will also be programmed throughout the year for special events and holidays and will be managed by the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Downtown is the heartbeat of the state, and Main Street is the heartbeat of downtown.
Dwelling downtown D
owntown Little Rock is comprised of a number of well-populated, lively neighborhoods. Beside the River Market and SOMA districts, there’s the Capital Area, which is the hub of Arkansas State Government; Center City, home to businesses and mixed-use buildings; MacArthur Park and Governor’s Mansion Historic Districts, both have a mix of residential and commercial spaces; Pettaway Neighborhood, which surrounds Pettaway Park; Hanger Hill, which is close to the Clinton Presidential Center and Heifer International; and Dunbar School Historic Neighborhood, which includes Dunbar Middle and Central High Schools.

A key component to a vibrant downtown is an urban entertainment district. Walkable urbanism starts with urban entertainment venues and retail that are within walking distance of one another.* Some of the first and most significant projects in downtown Little Rock have been the result of investments by Jimmy Moses and Rett Tucker, directors, Moses Tucker Real Estate (MTRE). For nearly three decades the business partners have directed their energy and insight into constructing, restoring and converting some of the city’s most recognizable buildings, both commercial and residential. Their dedication to downtown Little Rock has helped indelibly change its landscape. “I grew up in Little Rock,” Tucker said, “I remember when downtown was the center of everything. We studied the renaissances of downtowns across the country, and I didn’t see why Little Rock couldn’t do the same. After all, downtown is the heart of a city and a body is only as healthy as its heart.” The two made rebuilding downtown Little Rock their mission, and though they’ve been

asked to develop in other areas, Tucker said, they’ve almost consistently said no and remained focused on that mission. Moses too remembers the excitement and dynamism of the 1950s-60’s downtown. “In the late ‘80s it became a wasteland. It was as if someone said, ‘Last one out, turn out the lights,’ but we believed the excitement and energy at the core could be reclaimed.” They pointed to the effort to capitalize ondowntown’s riverfront as a catalyst. Tucker said, “This effort kicked off with the River Front

Park. The renewal was really in its embryonic stages in the late ‘80s. The decisions of Heifer International, Acxiom and the Clinton Library to locate here were huge. [The rejuvenation required] a big commitment by private and public sectors to make it happen.” In the early ‘90s, a plan called The Diamond Center was conceived as “a community effort to rebuild downtown as a core centered around cultural outlets” with an arena, convention center and library as the anchors. The idea was presented as a ballot initiative, but

he Thea Foundation was founded by Paul and Linda Leopoulos in 20 01 shor tly af ter the untimely death of their daughter, Thea Kay Leopoulos. Thea’s story begins as a rather typical one for a seventeen-year-old girl, making Cs and Ds and disliking school. By the end of her junior year, however, Thea was making As and Bs in difficult subjects and loving school. Paul and Linda immediately adopted the mission to understand what happened in Thea’s life to cause such a drastic transformation in a short seven months. Now, after more than ten years of experience and research in education, the founders as well
as countless parents, students and teachers can confirm that Thea’s sudden involvement in visual art, dance, drama and creative writing made all the difference. Based on this conclusion, our programs have been designed to inspire youth who, like Thea, gain confidence and learn most effectively through hands-on, artsinspired lessons. Our creativity-driven programs and events include but are not limited to Thea Scholarships, Thea’s Art Closet, Arkansas A+ Schools, Thea Ar t s Festival, Thea’s Art Class, and more. We are so thankful for the support of the community, because without it, these outreach initiatives would be
impossible. To learn more or donate to our meaningful cause, please visit www.theafoundation.org.

ABOUT PRACTICE
Family Dentistry Cosmetic Dentistry
Family and community are first at the ASAP Smile Center. Drs. Richard Gore and Sean Gore have built a successful dental practice by caring for their patients just like family. It is that simple philosophy and guiding principal which led the Arkansas Health Care Foundation to honor them both in 2013 for their dedication and service to Arkansans who are medically uninsured or facing financial hardships. Caring for others comes naturally to Richard and Sean, who both practice general and cosmetic dentistry in Little Rock. With over thirty-two years of experience, Richard finds joy in helping others gain confidence with their new smile. With an undergraduate degree from UALR and a D.D.S. with honors from the University of Tennessee, Richard and his wife Amanda continue to give back to their community in many other ways as well. He also travels the world as part of medical mission teams. As a second generation dentist, Sean finds value in building upon the legacy of community service that his father, Richard instilled in him. As an undergraduate from the University of Central Arkansas, he received his D.D.S. degree with honors from MeHarry Medical College in 2008. Sean knows that the dental industry and practice is constantly changing due to innovation and improvements in science and technology. With three young children, he and his wife Christina can relate to and understand the needs of young families. Together, Richard and Sean’s patients receive quality dental care by combining proven practice experience with forward-thinking innovation. That’s why ASAP Smile Center continues to be one of the best dental practices in Arkansas.

ABOUT DENTIST
I wish to thank my patients for choosing my office as their dental home for the past 20 years. I wish to thank my staff for being the best at what you do for many years. I wish to thank my friends and family for their lifelong care and support. I am humbled that the readers of AY Magazine have nominated me for this honor. I thank my peers of the Arkansas State Dental Association. They mentored me as a young dentist, and accept my leadership now as a middle-aged dentist. As a business owner and home owner in the Historic Hillcrest District, I selfishly love this part of my hometown. My practice offers single visit all porcelain crowns/veneers, metal-free fillings, digital radiography, clear orthodontic aligners, sleep/apnea appliance therapy, implant surgery and restorations. I have also maintained many traditional facets of a general dentistry practice like root canal therapy, crowns, bridges, dentures/partials, extractions, cleanings, periodontal maintenance/non surgical therapy and pediatrics. My fellowships/affiliations include the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, ADA, ASDA, Academy of General Dentistry, American Association of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, International Congress of OralImplantologists, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. My efforts towards the betterment of my profession include serving as a volunteer surgeon each year for the Arkansas Mission of Mercy, serving as director for continuing dental education for the Arkansas State Dental Asssociation since 2009, serving as president over my region in the Arkansas State Dental Association, work with the American College of Dentists/Arkansas State Board of Dental Examiners in putting together the first continuing education mandate for all Arkansas Dentists in the field of ethics, and I serve on the board of directors for UAMS CDE and Central District Dental Society. 619 BeechwooD street

General & Cosmetic Dentistr y ABOUT DENTIST Bryan A. Austin opened Austin Family Dentistry in Maumelle 20 years ago in 1993. Since then the practice has grown tremendously. Dr. Julia T. Gildon joined the practice five years ago to help with the growth and to aid in the expanded services offered. Austin Family Dentistry provides family and cosmetic dentistry to all ages. Most services are performed in the office without needing referrals to other dental specialists. Some of the expanded services offered are implants, sedation dentistry, sleep apnea treatment, Botox and fillers, TMJ treatment and orthodontics including invisalign and brackets. Advanced technology has been a must throughout Dr. Austin’s career. Digital x-rays that use a third of the radiation that conventional x-rays use have another advantage of being larger and easier to read. Crowns can be made in one visit with a CEREC milling unit. A cone beam CT scan shows all the teeth, sinus, TMJ and airway in three dimensions. Dr. Austin plans on expanding into Little Rock in January to provide the same patient experience everyone in Maumelle has grown accustom to. The office will be located at 11211 Cantrell Road and Dr. Bradley Crossfield will be the resident dentist. Experience Austin Family Dentistry. You deserve it…
