JOE DAVID RICE
P. ALLEN SMITH
P. Allen Smith is an author, television host and conservationist with a passion for American style. His show “Garden Home” airs on public television. Check your local listings for “Garden Style.” Smith uses his Arkansas home, Moss Mountain Farm, as an epicenter for promoting the local food movement, organic gardening and the preservation of heritage poultry breeds. Joe David Rice serves as Arkansas’s Tourism Director, a position he’s held since 1987. He and his team of 65 employees have two major responsibilities: enhancing the image of Arkansas and enticing more visitors to the state. Rice, a northeast Arkansas native, graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1974. He also obtained a master’s degree – with an environmental planning emphasis – from the University of Illinois.

ike many grand ideas, it all started over a bottle of nice white wine. Little Rock restaurateur Jim Keet and fellow restaurant industry veteran Louis Petit were visiting one summer evening in Destin, Fla. The and evening started Jake, Tommy Jim Keet with with Luke the one bottle of O' Gary KO Construction. wine, “a very, veryofnice bottle,” Keet reiterates, but by the next morning the two had created a new and inventive restaurant concept and they were certain Little Rock would be the perfect location.

MHG OF ARK ANSAS
n average, one Arkansan dies every 15 hours from suicide. This year, our state’s suicide ranking went from 17th in the United States to 10th – not a statistical ranking to be proud of. As a society, our perception and understanding of suicide is clearly changing. But while we chip away at the colossal stigma that is mental illness one tiny chip at a time, it is clear that change is not coming quickly enough. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 24-yearolds in Arkansas and the fifth leading cause of death for 10- to 14-year-olds. This year, AY’s Guide to Mental Health focuses not only on suicide prevention, addiction and veterans issues, but also on how to help kids and teens struggling with mental illness. In the pages that follow, we provide practical advice to help recognize and protect children and teens from depression, anxiety, addiction and other emotional difficulties. We talked to healthcare professionals and Arkansas school counselors to find out how we can better care for all the people of Arkansas, especially our children. We are immensely proud of the individuals who agreed to share their difficult stories with us this year. It takes a lot of courage to be vulnerable and share your story. The recurring theme from all of them is that they just want to help others. May their kindness and generosity be made manifest by the kind of action needed to help break the cycle and dispel the stigma of these tragic occurrences. This year’s issue will be available to parents and teachers and we will have an online resource guide as well. Visit aymag.com/mentalhealthguide.com
