Prehistory
Arrival of the Floating Pool: after 40 years of crossing the Atlantic, the architects/lifeguards reach their destination. But they hardly notice it: due to the particular form of locomotion of the pool — its reaction to their own displacement in the water — they have to swim toward what they want to get away from and away from where they want to go.

ENDANGERED
Archive for Endangered Ideas — the realisation of an archive for the housing of endangered ideas based on three conceptual references in the form of text, visual and spatial. These were analysed and distilled to their core ideas, each reference then represented in text, visual and spatial form, or in some instances a synthesis. The island is a field of endangered ideas. A field of events, enabling our understanding of a unique array of conceptual artefacts through an archive. The archive distributed
IDEAS
across the island, houses a textual, visual, and spatial concept: The Agency of Mapping, James Corner; The Constructor, El Lissitzky; Maison a Bordeaux, Rem Koolhaas. Each reference and space sets the ground through which the next will be understood. Beginning with text, The Agency of Mapping primes with the notion of layering and sets the scene for The Constructor, and encapsulates the holistic approach to the island. The Constructor, the Russian Constructivist predecessor to Maison a Bordeaux.

The X, Y, Z typography is translated into a sequence of moments experienced in the space. X represents the individual’s vision, corresponding with Lissitzky’s eye; Y the instruments one uses reflecting Lissitzky’s compass-hand as his instrument; Z the manifesto communicated with the use of the artist’s vision and tools (X and Y). The space is configured based upon the composition of the precedent, upon a shift in axis, this original composition is seen and read diagrammatically. Making reference to Lissitzky’s Proun work of compositions which can be read on any side, the three dimensional Cartesian plane is referenced in the gridded planes of the space.

WE WHO HAVE GONE BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF PAINTING TOOK PLUMB LINE, RULER AND COMPASS INTO OUR HANDS, BECAUSE THE DABBING BRUSH WAS NOT RIGHT FOR OUR LEVEL OF PRECISION; AND IF NECESSARY WE WILL TAKE MACHINE INTO OUR HANDS BECAUSE, FOR OUR CREATION, THE BRUSH OF RULE OR COMPASS ARE MERELY THE LAST JOINT OF THE FINGER THAT OUTLINES THE WAY.
— El Lissitzky
“I'm an eye. A mechanical eye. I, the machine, show you a world the way only I can see it. I free myself for today and forever from human immobility. I'm in constant movement. I approach and pull away from objects. I creep under them. I move alongside a running horse's mouth. I fall and rise with the falling and rising bodies. This is I, the machine, manoeuvring in the chaotic

Letterhead, Unnknown Arrival of the Floating Pool: after 40 years of crossing the Atlantic, the architects/lifeguards reach their destination. But they hardly notice it: due to the particular form of locomotion of the pool — its reaction to their own displacement in the water — they have to swim toward what they want to get away from and away from where they want to go.

Bastion. If Bigness transforms architecture, its accumulation generates a new kind of city. The exterior of the city is no longer a collective theater where “it: happens; there’s no collective ”it” left. The street has become residye, organizational device, mere segment of the continuous metrpolitan plane where the remnant of the past face the equipments of the new in an uneasy standoff. Bigness can exist anywhere on the plane. Not only is Bigness incapable of establising relationships with the classical city — at most, it coexists — but in the quantity and complexity and complexity of the facilties it offers, it is itself urban. Bigness no longer needs the city: it competes with the city; it represents the city; it preempts the city; or better still, it is the city. If urbanism generates potential and architecture exploits it, Bigness enlists the generosity of urbanism against the meanness of architecture. Bigness = urbanism vs. architecture. Bigness, through its very independence of context, is the one architecture that can survive, even exploit, the now-global condition of the tabula rasa: it does not take its inspiration from givens too often squeezed for the last drop of meaning; it gravitates opportunistically to locations of maximum infrastructural promise; it is, finally, its own raison d’être. In spite of its size, it is modest. Not all architecture, not all program, not all events will be swallowed by Bigness. There are many “needs” too unfocused, too weak, too unrespectable, too defiant, too secret, too subversive, too weak, too “nothing” to be part of the constellations of Bigness. Bigness is the last bastion of architecture a contraction, a hyper-architecture. The containers of Bigness will be landmarks in a post-architectural landscape — a worl d scraped of architecture in the way Richter’s painting are scraped of paint: infelxible, immutable, definitive, forever there, generated through superhuman effort. Bigness surrenders the field to after-architecture. 1994.

THESIS STUDIO Catherine Duggan
INTERRUPTION 8
HIGH RISE The objective of this thesis study is to interrupt the high rise apartment typology, departing from the regurgitation and repetition of floor plates, by transposing the horizontal urban realm into the vertical. This process enables the occurrence of vertical neighbourhoods and programs as alternative amenities to the common gym and pool, to enrich the everyday life in the high rise. The focus and use of staircase to travel vertically provides an opportunity for encounters and interactions to take place both for the residents and the public. This thesis aims to uncover an alternative approach to the typology engaging a more intimate scale of the high rise, invoking: stimulation, curiosity, memories, refuge, restoration, imagination.

RISE
A group assignment for the design and construction documentation of an office building located in Melbourne CBD. The project included schematic design, development and key details. The project was divided into three: ground floor, envelope and roof, of which I developed the roof details presented in the above drawings.
