Kloth Cares, the first textile-recycling movement in Southeast Asia, is a social enterprise that aims to keep fabric out of landfills. Kloth Cares has between 350 and 400 fabric bins located in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Putrajaya, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and Johor. About half of them are “adopted by corporate citizens”, she said, adding that companies can either choose to adopt a bin for their workplaces, or sponsor them in different locations.

Problem Statement

The rise of fast fashion has led to unconscious consumption among young adults, resulting in significant environmental consequences. The fashion industry's contribution to pollution, resource depletion, and textile waste poses a long-term environmental threat. Young adults, as major consumers, often lack awareness of these issues, perpetuating the cycle of fast fashion. To address this problem, engaging textile upcycling activities are needed to empower young adults to make conscious choices and reduce textile waste. Through workshops and creative activities, young adults can learn upcycling techniques and develop a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of their fashion choices. By fostering awareness, creativity, and empowerment, young adults can play a vital role in building a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry.

Garment To Garment Textile Upcycling Hub

Project Brief

The Garment to Garment Textile Upcycling Hub is a vibrant community space promoting sustainable fashion through education, creativity, and collaboration. With a focus on combating the harmful effects of fast fashion, the hub offers informative exhibits and multimedia resources to raise awareness and inspire conscious consumer choices. Through diverse textile upcycling workshops led by experts, participants learn techniques such as sewing and dyeing to transform unused garments into unique creations. The hub also provides a donation point for unwanted garments, which are either upcycled or distributed to those in need, reducing waste. By fostering a sense of community, the hub encourages networking and collaboration, aiming to empower individuals to make positive changes in the fashion industry. The ultimate vision is a fashion industry that is both stylish and environmentally and socially responsible.

The River Of Life project, launched in July 2011, is to transform the Klang River into a vibrant and liveable waterfront with high economic value. The Concept of the project has been inspired from the thread which is the beginning stage of any garment, and the “Tabby” weaving technique that is used in the making of garments. The different colors and textures are a represenattion of the various disposed textiles and them coming together in one piece is a representation of the textile upcycling venue where garments are repurposed in many different ways.

The concept applied on the project can be observed in curvy lines and the circulation of the venue.
