MANIFESTO What does architecture mean to you? To me, architecture is an art, science and philosophy but more importantly, architecture is an experience. Architecture should change the way you think. It should shift/shape your mentality on how you see and experience the world around you. The power of architecture over the mind is one that cannot be overstated yet it is rarely discussed or utilized. The projects in this portfolio are carefully curated to exemplify the many ways architecture and space can provide an experience(s) for the user past a beautiful aesthetic, which these projects also have. From the ‘living’ art museum (Garamagu) to the pavilion of the dead (Devouring the dark), each project helps shape and redefine what we think architecture can be.

GARAMAGU Art Within Living Art | Flat-Iron Plaza, NYC The museum ‘Garamagu’ is a sculptural interpretation of Garamagu, a mythical sea creature, as well as structural representation of the monster that comprises of a hard outer shell, a massive bone structure, and soft interior. Visitors will get to know what it was like to enter Garamagu from the punctured side and discover its treasures within for themselves. Following the end of the exhibition, segments of Garagmagu’s body will be auctioned off as distinct artifacts that will continue to embody the story of the Unbelievable’s demise. Partner: Tae Lee Professor: Robert Stuart-Smith

GARAMAGU

Structural and aesthetic precedence used starting from Damien Hirst’s ‘Andromeda’. The blending of different textures to achieve an aquatic form in motion as well as structure materials that perfectly translate sculptural aesthetics into formal structural inhabitable forms without losing the sculpture. Scales turn into shingles, bones turn into special concrete arrays, connecting tendons turn into tension cables pulling the concrete fabrications together.

INTERIOR GALLERIES WITHIN THE GARAMAGU MUSEUM Interior render shows two transitional gallery spaces displaying artwork within the ‘Garamagu’. Here, you can see the seams of the concrete components pulled together by the tension cables. Most of the light infiltrates through the openings in the ‘bones’ of the building.

Tension cables begin to pull components off the ground. BOTTOM RIGHT: Overall model showing a large section of the building and demostrating how the tension cables work in pulling the components together above the ground.

COMBINATORY URBANISM Systems Based Urban Design | Shenzhen, China Combinatory urbanism is an alternative method of urban production that designs flexible frameworks of relational systems within which activities, events, and programs can organically play themselves out. This is architecture as the strategic organizer of the city. This project delves into armatures and manouvers which is what an urban mechanism - a city - is made up of. Looking at structure and systems, not style and aesthetics. The project posits an alternative to traditional end-state planning solutions for a new Tencent company campus where employees can live and work. Team: Nicole Bronola, Jordan Hillier, Grace Soejanto. Professor: Thom Mayne.

F.U.B.U. For Us By Us | Parkside, Philadelphia, PA FUBU is a market and community space for the people and by the people located in West Philadelphia. This space creates a new train stop for the community while also bringing life, beauty, economic opportunity, and access to fresh fruits and vegetables. FUBU does not simply provide these new amenities to the neighborhood, it empowers, creating opportunities for residents to become community leaders and take on an active role in the development of this burgeoning urban hub. Hence the name, ‘For Us, By Us’.

19

The population of the Parkside Community has an average yearly income ranging from $14k $40k. About 35% live below the poverty level and have an unemployment rate of 14%.

FUBU food trucks, shops, and markets provide employment and a new source of income to community members.

The Parkside Community is a food desert, containing only four small “grocery stores with little to no fresh fruits and vegetables.

The FUBU roof garden is cultivated and maintained by the community, providing fresh fruits and vegetables for weekly farmer’s markets.

There is currently a lack of community space that allow all age groups, races and religions to gather.

A community space is provided for all ages, races, and religions, to gather, play, talk, and celebrate. They are also able to build and transform the open spaces to accommodate any event.

THE WAZOBIA CULTURAL PERFORMANCE CENTER An Urban Nucleus | Fishtown, Philadelphia, PA There are more than 55,000 African immigrants currently living in Philadelphia. This underserved community is not really a community at all as they are spread out all over Philadelphia with no nucleus joining them. WAZOBIA is an African cultural artist residency project that specializes in and provides housing and performance spaces to both local and traveling artists to make and share their art with the public. The location, at the center of Fishtown’s emerging creative district, benefits from an already established population interested in arts and culture. WAZOBIA is accessible to the entire city through the Market Frankford elevated train corridor and will able to connect and invite all types of people. Diversity is provided through an array of performance spaces and housing units that cater to the different budgets, housing needs, performance types and sizes and length of stays for the many institutional participants. Professor: Brian Phillips

26

THE WAZOBIA CULTURAL PERFORMANCE CENTER

On a Micro scale, the function of the WAZOBIA Cultural Performance Center is made stronger by the location of its site in Fishtown. Located at the center of the ‘Arts Boulevard’ in Fishtown and right by the EL train on Front street, the site of WAZOBIA already benefits from a large art thirsty population from Fishtown as well as hundreds of thousands of eyes from the EL train commute.

PERFORMANCE CENTERS IN FISHTOWN

On a Macro scale, the WAZOBIA Cultural Performance Center, with the help of the EL train and the Girard corridor, would connects Fishtown to a network of African hotspots spread all over Philadelphia. This would introduce Fishtown, a rebirthing and affordable part of Philadelphia, to many African immigrants living in Philadelphia as well start to cultivate a strong African community in Philadelphia as there is not one currently due to a lack of foci.

Work and living spaces scheme is developed by multiple factor including light, access, circulation, noise and especially the public - private relationship of the programs to the site as well as the views from, to and across the programs. All the conditions present moved the work (performance) to the front, near the train and street, and the living (apartments) to the back. The higher up you go, the more living and less performance.

DEVOURING THE DARK Blurring the line between Life and Death | Manitoga, NY Tucked away in the woodlands of Manitoga, Devour[ing] the Dark is a mausoleum that presents a scene in which mischievous creatures appear to be in the midst of a gluttonous, cannibalistic act. The grotesque nature of their interactions both repulses and entices those who cross its path. Upon approaching the feast, an opening exposes the stomach of the mausoleum. Those who choose to enter will find themselves swallowed by a moist, squishy cavern for two. This pavilion challenges the user to question what is comfortable and what is not. CONTORTIONIST Artist Residency Program | Manitoga, NY Based on the Devour[ing] The Dark project, this project is a practical and structural pavilion. Retaining the human qualities of the Devour[ing] The Dark, this pavilion references the movement and positions of circus contortionist to create thsi collection of dancing bodies. The experience of thsi project remains very surreal as the blur between organic and inorganic element sin still strong. Although, this project concentrates more on structure and how the human form can work together to create a strong structural unit. Team: ARCH 730 Class of Spring 2017
