'Your Business' Autumn Magazine 2024

Page 1

Welcome to the Autumn edition of our Chamber magazine

This edition’s theme is Skills & Development which ties in nicely with the recent #NoWrongPath campaign delivered by Developing the Young Workforce Regional Groups across Scotland. Now in its 7th year this year’s campaign has taken on greater meaning for me as my son leaves school. The campaign aims to provide inspiration and reassurance to young people receiving their results but can also support those seeking next steps as it highlights career journeys are often not straight forward. It’s important young people know there are always options and alternative routes to get you where you want to be, it might just take a bit longer than expected.

Thanks to all the employers who not only took part in this year’s campaign but those who engage with our Schools and College to provide opportunities including work experience placements, career, inspirational talks, mock interviews, apprenticeships, the list goes on. Young people often just need to be given the chance to shine, if you are not currently engaged in this activity then please get in touch! DYW Ayrshire features a lot of good work already happening in Ayrshire on their pages further on in the magazine.

Keeping on the theme of Skills, now that the dust has settled after the election, the Chamber network have prioritised four key areas for the new Labour government. I hear all the time that skills remain one of the top issues facing businesses, so it is no surprise that prioritising people and talent feature

in the priorities. Meeting the future needs of our business base is crucial to drive a better economy, so Ayrshire and the Chamber network will continue to lobby on behalf of our members to ensure their voices are heard. .

Wheels in Motion: Kilmarnock firm repair wheelchair fleet at Edinburgh Airport

Medical equipment servicing and repairs company Backup Medical recently carried out a service of Edinburgh Airport’s passenger assistance wheelchair fleet. After a thorough inspection by the Kilmarnock-based team, most were found to be repairable. This was good news for the airport as it meant up to 50% savings when compared to purchasing new ones.

Ensuring Safety and Comfort

Edinburgh Airport is one of Scotland’s busiest travel hubs and they rely on wheelchairs to assist passengers with mobility challenges. Regular maintenance of the wheelchair fleet is crucial for both safety as well as a smooth travel experience.

“Our goal was to ensure every wheelchair was in perfect working order, ready for passengers at the airport to use safely and comfortably,” said John Bole of Backup Medical. “We take pride in knowing our work directly impacts the quality of service airport passengers receive.”

Tailored Solutions for Businesses

In addition to repairs, Backup Medical also offers a selection of new wheelchairs for purchase, ensuring that businesses can access high-quality, cost-effective options to meet their needs. With their complimentary annual servicing reminders, Backup Medical likes to take a proactive approach in supporting businesses who provide equipment for customer use, saving companies money.

Expanding Services

From airports and shopping centres to sports venues and museums; the team are fully equipped to handle the servicing, maintenance and repair needs across a wide range of industries.

John continued, “We’re extending our services to other businesses who provide equipment for customer use such as wheelchairs, trolleys- and vinyl seating,”

“Often we can repair rather than replace and this can save businesses a significant amount of money by extending the life of their equipment.”

To register for free annual servicing reminders for your equipment, please email info@backupmedical.co.uk

A chiropractic adjustment for Prestwick

Do you remember the 23rd of March 2020? If you’re in business it’s likely this date is forever etched into your memory: The day the COVID-19 pandemic led to a UK-wide lockdown, and life as we knew it came to a halt.

It was also the happy day that Francesca McCluskie received the keys to her new business premises...CoreHealth Chiropractic in Prestwick.

Francesca shared “Following a week of tears and panic about not being able to pay the bills (with no government support), I decided I had to shift my mindset. I vowed to devote all my

attention to transforming the iconic ‘Bank of Scotland building’ at Prestwick Cross. Though derelict, I envisioned it once again becoming a vibrant community hub as it had once been prior to it’s closure in 2018”.

Renovating this huge building was no small feat, especially amidst the pandemic. It was tackled in two phases over 3 years to ensure every detail was perfect, despite lack of availability of tradespeople and materials!

The old banking hall now serves as a large, bright reception space which has hosted our Annual Health Reviews, countless workshops and parties over the past 4 years.

The once overgrown garden recently hosted the CHC 2024 charity fundraiser and ‘mugmaking’ team afternoon on a rare sunny day!

Reviving the Bank of Scotland building appears to have been a real labour of love, and it proudly stands once again as a bright, respectable pillar of the Prestwick community.

Billy BowieCommitted to skills and development platinum

Billy Bowie has established one of the country’s leading providers of waste management solutions. Starting in 1991 with one truck, the business now has over 130 units in the fleet and employs over 100 full-time members of staff. A philanthropist at his core, Billy is also the majority shareholder in Kilmarnock Football Club and owns

The Park Hotel, making him one of the local area’s largest private employers of staff with over 400 in his combined businesses.

Billy’s skill and commitment to hard work are the driving forces behind his business’s success. Establishing himself in the waste management industry early in his career, he recognised a lack of initiative and decided to break away and form his own company. Determined to expand the business every year, he hasn’t stopped growing yet.

A realistic risk taker, Billy breaks the mould when it’s required and does so in a logical manner, to have the best possible impact on the business. Billy is a leader who takes pride in his dedication to ensure the business creates a cleaner environment. This approach has identified him as a disrupter in the industry and another reason he factors for his business’ success in comparison to competitors.

As the success of BBSP continues, Billy’s investment in the local community has been visible for years. As the majority shareholder of Kilmarnock Football Club, he took full control

of the club and the Park Hotel in 2013. He stabilised both businesses, protecting one of the country’s oldest football clubs, becoming one of the districts largest private employers.

Billy’s vision for BBSP’s growth is underpinned with continued investment in the local area, and his recent plans launched to create a multi-functional training facility in Kilmarnock will not just benefit grassroots football, but also the development of boys and girls football academies for years to come.

As one of the area’s largest employers, Billy prides himself on the creation of in-house training programs and will continue to build on his great working relationships with local authorities to get those who struggle most to get back into work, into permanent and longterm employment. His training academy at BBSP is fast outgrowing demand, so Billy plans to establish a training facility that can offer numerous people the ability to learn a trade and seek stable employment in the process.

BBSP will continue to be a pioneer in the waste management industry and Billy’s vision for contemporary and ethical business practices will endure to form a core part of the company’s strategy. A man of few words and plenty of action, Billy prides himself on his work ethic. As his business grows, so will his ambition to achieve all he can for his business.

The data was gathered at careers and STEM fair events across south west Scotland with young people

Businesses ‘need more support on workforce health’

Employers need better education, resources and support to address workforce health challenges, according to a roundtable meeting of Ayrshire businesses.

Companies across Ayrshire shared their views on challenges facing the working-age population during a discussion organised by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, British Chambers of Commerce and the Health Foundation.

The meeting – the only one in Scotland – was the first of just four across the UK. The event saw participants share experiences, challenges and their perspectives as well as having the opportunity to raise questions and concerns about managing sickness absence, supporting employees with mental health issues and the barriers faced by smaller businesses.

Ayrshire Chamber president Alison Somerville and the Health Foundation’s lead economist Christopher Rocks spoke at the event, attended by companies including J&D Pierce, McTaggart Construction and RAD Hotel Group.

Chamber CEO Claire Baird said: “This was a really important session that helped to shed light on the most acute health-related challenges facing our Ayrshire businesses – particularly smaller companies with fewer employees, where absences can have a larger impact.

“It’s clear from the discussions that recruitment and retention of staff are priorities for our businesses and we at the Chamber will continue to do all we can to support them through those challenges.

“The insights from this conference will inform the Commission for Healthier Working Lives, supporting recommendations for the workforce across the UK. We feel proud and privileged to have hosted the only such event in Scotland.”

Inspiring alumni

Since graduating from Glasgow Caledonian in 2010 with a graphic design degree, Richard Longmuir has continued to hone his expertise, working in various roles across the design industry before rising the ranks to become Launch Digital’s Creative Director.

“My experience has been characterised by meaningful collaborations, impactful projects, and the opportunity to make a difference,” he says.

“I had the privilege of leading a comprehensive rebranding for the company. This project not only showcased my creative

vision and strategic thinking but also significantly enhanced the company’s brand identity and market positioning.”

Dundonald Links in the spotlight at Coughlin wins Women’s Scottish Open

High-flying Lauren Coughlin held off the chasing pack to win the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open at Dundonald Links.

The tournament – returning to Dundonald for the sixth time in a decade – was there for the taking ahead of the final round, but Coughlin built on a one-shot lead to earn her a second LPGA title in three weeks.

In a field packed with the world’s finest, Olympic silver medallist Esther Henseleit came closest to catching Coughlin, but still fell four

strokes short of the American’s remarkable final score of 15 under par. Ayaka Furue – who won this event at Dundonald in 2022 – joined Megan Khang and England’s Charley Hull to round out the top five.

The win sees Coughlin add to her first ever LPGA Tour win – the CPKC Women’s Open in July – and move to third place in the Race to CME Globe rankings.

The Women’s Scottish Open has been a regular fixture at Dundonald Links in recent years, with Kyle Phillips’ acclaimed links course widely regarded among the finest in Ayrshire.

As has become the norm, many players opted to stay on-site in Dundonald’s luxury lodges, which are specially designed for golfers and even feature practice putting greens for competitors and guests to sharpen their skills.

Since opening for play in 2005, Dundonald Links has grown into a regular host of prestigious tournaments and also staged Open Championship Final Qualifying this summer –an event that will return to the venue annually until 2026.

Ayrshire flooring company supplies major events

Formed in 2020, Ayr-based ROXX Flooring Limited specialises in the supply, installation, removal, and recycling of flooring at major events and exhibitions.

And when we say ‘major’, we mean major, with ROXX’s client list including The Open, AIG Women’s Open, Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Aintree Grand National, and Wimbledon. An impressive list, and one made even more so by the fact that ROXX is also one of the flooring providers for Exhibitions, Conferences and State visits by overseas dignitaries to the UK.

ROXX also provides its services to events and exhibitions in mainland Europe. Between this and its UK operations, ROXX typically

supplies, fits, removes, and recycles around 175,000 square metres of flooring at events and exhibitions per annum.

This last aspect of ROXX’s services –Recycling - plays a crucial role in ROXX’s operations, a sentiment strongly echoed by Managing Director Paul Bryan. He emphasizes,

“We rigorously ensure that the flooring materials we use—carpet, vinyl, and astroturf— are all completely recyclable. Recycling these materials is significantly more eco-friendly than consigning them to landfill.

“We handle all logistics for recycling our floor coverings; for example, our carpets are transformed into pellets used in the automotive industry, and our vinyl flooring is converted into traffic cones.

“We are proud to have prevented approximately 250 tonnes of CO2 emissions by opting for recycling.”

Lack of traditional roofing skills training in Ayrshire

At DM Roofing and Roughcasting Ltd they have a long history of employing apprentices within Ayrshire, and with 18 apprentices currently on their books they aren’t slowing down with this trend anytime soon.

DM Roofing and Roughcasting Ltd are an advocate for our apprentices, as their own Managing Director Michael McCabe had started as an apprentice and worked his way up through the company.

Apprentices currently attend college at West College Scotland in Paisley as this is the closest college to Ayrshire running the courses needed. As their apprentices tend to be young, most of them don’t drive – so the amount of travelling

required to do these courses quickly adds up.

With the lack of local training in traditional roofing skills being made available, the team have challenged this with the support from NFRC and other local roofing companies. The team even had their Finance Manager, KellieAnn Lees, attend a Traditional Building Skills roundtable meeting at the Scottish Parliament back in March, to discuss the impact of this.

From this meeting, Carol Mochan MSP then contacted DM Roofing and Roughcasting Ltd to arrange a site visit, to meet with some of our apprentices and discuss the fundamental issues affecting them. This was beneficial for the team to show their apprentices that they are doing everything in their power to try and

see if they can obtain any local training.

Apprentices play a crucial role in industry of roofing, offering several key benefits that contribute to the growth, sustainability, and quality of the sector.

Ayrshire’s economy thrives with Ayrshire Skills Investment Fund

Ayrshire’s economy continues to benefit from strategic investment with Ayrshire Skills Investment Fund (ASIF). This £3.5 million initiative, part Ayrshire Growth Deal, offers local employers an invaluable opportunity to address skill gaps within their workforce.

So far, ASIF funding has provided 140 Ayrshire residents crucial training opportunities. These individuals now possess new skills to enhance their career prospects and increase the competitive edge of their employers.

ASIF’s impact extends across sectors that are vital to the region’s growth, including Engineering, Digital, Clean Growth, and Visitor Economy. By equipping staff with relevant, industry-specific skills, this ensures that Ayrshire’s businesses remain at the forefront of innovation and growth. The fund targets priority groups - young people, females, individuals with long-term health conditions, and those in low-paid employment, to gain new skills and qualifications.

In partnership with Ayrshire College, the fund plays a crucial role in supporting unemployed residents. The college has developed bespoke courses, tailored to meet the specific needs of local employers. This

proactive approach is yielding results, with new courses in Aerospace and Welding, attracting candidates from diverse backgrounds eager to upskill or reskill for these in-demand sectors.

For local employers, ASIF represents an excellent opportunity to invest in their workforce. The fund, which offers up to £1,800 per person for training and development, with the flexibility to choose accredited training programs or in-house delivery, tailored to the specific needs of each business.

Employers interested in applying for the fund can contact fairworkayrshire@north-ayrshire.gov.uk

Rewards Training modern apprenticeships benefit employers

At Rewards Training Scotland, their Modern Apprenticeship programmes are not just changing young lives—they’re delivering exceptional value to employers. These apprenticeships equip employees with the practical skills and qualifications essential for your business’s present and future success.

Take IDS Electrical Contractors, for example. They approached Rewards Training to help recruit a new team member for a Business and Administration Modern Apprenticeship. They placed Riane Bone in the role, and it quickly became evident that the combination of hands-on experience and qualification support she received through Rewards Training Scotland was a perfect fit. Riane brought fresh ideas and a strong work ethic, becoming a “brilliant addition” to the team. According to her mentor and

Project Manager (Laura Shepherd), “Having a Modern Apprentice has improved our workflow and helped the business operate more effectively.”

The team have also seen outstanding results with Nicole Henery, who joined KC Group Shipping in a similar role. Her manager, Barbara Szczesny, advises employers to embrace the apprenticeship process. Despite initial reservations, she says, “We could not imagine our workplace without Nicole.”

Modern Apprenticeships are a win-win for employers. They attract motivated individuals eager to learn and grow, and in return, these apprentices gain the skills and confidence needed to build successful careers. It’s an investment in the future that benefits everyone involved. www.rewardstraining.com

Social Value: At the heart of every SCAPEScotland project

Public sector construction projects should consider social value as a means to provide strong, sustainable legacies for communities, the economy, local businesses, and the environment.

Through a combination of our strategies, our processes, our people and our passion to deliver more for the public sector, we are committed to finding new ways to invest in local communities and are proud to have made significant local economic impact in Scotland.

SCAPE Scotland’s Head of Business Development Lillian McDowall said: “We recognise how vital providing social value is and believe we have a responsibility to take

the lead and ensure that every single one of our projects is delivered for the benefit of local communities across Scotland.”

SCAPE Scotland also recognises that investing in the future, developing the next generation of skilled workers, is an important step.

Last year hundreds of young people from across Scotland were given the opportunity to attend a free work taster event organised by SCAPE Scotland and partners aimed at showcasing the construction industry and encouraging them to consider a career in the built environment.

SCAPEing out a World of Work was developed by the SCAPE Scotland Community Legacy Group in response to the DYW (Developing the Young Workforce) aim to introduce young people to the full breadth of job roles and careers within construction. Over 200 young people from across Scotland attended the event in Stirling.

Coming soon: the Digital Process Manufacturing Centre (DPMC)

A new facility for industry aiming to advance process manufacturing through cutting-edge technologies is officially opening later this year in Ayrshire. The Digital Process Manufacturing Centre (DPMC), part of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS), is set to bolster economic growth while positioning the region as a hub for digital skills and smart manufacturing.

Located at the Booth Welsh site in Irvine’s i3 campus, the DPMC will provide businesses with access to advanced facilities and digital expertise. It is focused on accelerating digital adoption for manufacturers, helping them reduce energy costs and reach net-zero targets by becoming more efficient.

Following a major refurbishment, the facility includes safe testing areas, collaboration zones, and flexible space for prototyping new technologies prior to investment decisions. It also offers training to upskill the current workforce and support the next generation of talent.

Digital demonstrators at the DPMC will showcase how various technologies can be applied within manufacturing processes. These cover artificial intelligence, robotics, 5G networks, digital data management, and virtual and augmented reality.

The team behind the DPMC is already engaging with a wide range of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, chemicals, food and drink, water treatment, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG).

The DPMC is a collaboration between the University of Strathclyde, as the operator of NMIS, North Ayrshire Council and CPI. Both NMIS and CPI are part of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult. It is funded in part through the Ayrshire Growth Deal, as well as Scottish Enterprise.

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR

We’re mid-way through the year and I hope everyone is still enjoying the long hot summer days and the welldeserved time off with your families (OK, I’m stretching it a bit with that first part). I do love this time of year. Our young people have received their exam results and I hope are now looking forward to whatever exciting paths their career journeys might lead them on. As employers, those of us who take on apprentices or graduates at this time of year will be looking forward to working with a fresh cohort of young, new recruits who are wanting to learn, grow and develop their skills with us.

Whether you are in business or the public sector, you can’t have failed to notice that Skills and Recruitment have probably been the two hottest topics of discussion over the past couple of years, and for very good reason. Currently, the ability to recruit and retain good people with the right skills is possibly the single biggest factor that constrains business growth for most of us. Success in the future will depend upon our ability to upskill a broader spectrum of the community to take on the many skilled and semi-skilled roles local businesses need in order to grow.

Recognising that our future lies to a great extent with the upcoming young workforce is the reason why my own organisation, Storm Aviation Ltd has been working closely with DYW Ayrshire, Ayrshire Chamber, and

local schools on the work placement and school engagement programme over the past couple of years.

This superb programme provides us with a unique opportunity to take on enthusiastic young students who come and work with us over a period of a few weeks to gain real-life experience in a potential future career, and just as importantly, allows us to get to know them. I am pleased to say recent students from this programme have since taken on permanent roles within Storm Aviation.

On the subject of inspiring our young people, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all of you business leaders out there to bring along your own potential future leaders to our DYW Leadership Lunch on the 3rd October 2024 at Lochside Hotel, during Ayrshire Chamber’s Business Week. This will be an inspiring lunchtime session and a

unique opportunity for your own rising stars to meet with a panel of local entrepreneurs and leaders who will share their personal inspiring journeys with you. Please don’t miss this chance to inspire your own future leaders.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL PROJECTS – TEN YEARS ON

The innovative school projects (ISPs) started in 2015 shortly after the Scottish Government launched Developing the young workforce: Scotland’s youth employment strategy in December 2014 to implement the recommendations of the Wood Commission.

Key elements of the strategy included – increase vocational qualifications in the senior school phase, develop employability skills, increase and improve work experience opportunities and increase positive destinations for our young people.

ISPs were an Ayrshire innovation developed and driven by the DYW Ayrshire team established and led by the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce.

The concept of the ISPs was to support and fund medium to long term school projects focused on the development of vocational skills and the obtaining of vocation qualifications N4, N5,N6, PDA’s. This included support from partners such as Ayrshire College, the Prince’s Trust and other organisations.

The first ISP was the Lovilicious project at Greenwood Academy. Now in its 10th year it provides a range of beauty skills and qualifications. Over 300 young people have taken part in the Lovilicious programme since its inception. Lovilicious has

featured in the BBC2 Series Ill Gotten Gains.

There are over 125 active projects, baristas, rural and horticultural skills, beauty, bike repair and maintenance, furniture upcycling, beekeeping, childcare, construction skills, community cinema and aero based skills. Each features the development of vocational skills but also emphasises the importance of branding, marketing and publicity in the form of project launches. This also helps stimulate young people’s creativity with such project names as Wee Roasters, Deja Brew and Mocha Rocha

In addition students develop life skills including what are known as the 6Cs – confidence, communications, commitment, customer services, customer care and courtesy.

There is a major focus on sustainability so where possible projects are run as mini enterprises for example barista producing and selling a range of highquality hot drinks to school staff, beekeeping producing honey, and associated bees wax based products. This allows them to reinvest the profits and fund ongoing supplies.

However not all ISPs such as construction can produce funds to buy consumables such as sand, cement etc so support is sought from local businesses. Every little helps.

CURIOSITY CUBE SPARKS INTEREST FOR STEM AT LOCAL SCHOOLS IN AYRSHIRE

Earlier in May, over 700 students in Ayrshire - Marr College, Robert Burns Academy and Ardrossan Academy, had the opportunity to become scientists alongside Merck employees from the Irvine site. For the third consecutive year, the Curiosity Cube—the shipping container turned mobile science lab—is traveling across Europe to ignite interest in STEM and make learning fun.

During their visit at the Curiosity Cube, students participated in three handson experiments about sustainability based on the lifecycle of a t-shirt. The

students became sustainability scientists by:

l Examining different types of synthetic and natural fabrics utilised in the fashion industry with microscopes and categorising them based on their level of sustainability.

l Designing and testing a windmill that produces enough renewable energy to power a model t-shirt factory.

l Exploring the process of recycling an old t-shirt into a new one. The students learned how old clothing can be sorted, shredded into fibres, and re-spun into thread for new garments.

The 2024 Curiosity Cube tour will reach 45,000 students through more than 280 events in 14 countries.

OPERATION FUTURE READY: TRIPLOC SKILLS EXPERIENCE

In May 2024, Bruce McAulay from the Ayrshire Army Engagement Team organised a 2-day event at the Army Reserve Centre in Dreghorn for S3 – S4 pupils not sitting exams. In attendance was 60 pupils from Greenwood Academy, Robert Burns Academy and Stewarton Academy.

Pupils received an introduction about opportunities within the army, hearing from different staff members about their roles and journey’s. Pupils then headed outdoors for a series of hands-on activities to develop their Teamwork, Resilience, Initiative, Problem solving, Leadership, Organisational skills and

Communication (TRIPLOC) skills.

These events helped pupils to deliver their life skills and improve their future prospects. Thank you to the staff for organising this fun and engaging event.

QTS FUTURE OF RAIL

In May of this year, QTS held its hugely popular Future of Rail event, which enables young people in the local community to tour a real working site and understand an engineering environment. This event allows young people to meet with junior staff and decision makers of the company to assist them in making the right decisions when thinking about their careers.

Throughout this full day event, we welcomed 10 schools who brought around 300 young

opportunity to see machine and drone demonstrations, hear career talks from young talent within our business and take part in some STEM activities. This range of activities allowed all participants to experience different aspects of the railway business and to understand the skills needed to do a variety of roles.

Secondary schools and employability hubs across Ayrshire were invited to take part with QTS paying all transport costs to remove barriers allowing all to attend.

#NOWRONGPATH

National campaign #NoWrongPath returned for its 8th year running on August 6th 2024 to provide reassurance and inspiration to young people receiving their exam results across Scotland. Over 1,000 accounts shared almost 3000 career journeys and messages of reassurance to show young people that there’s #NoWrongPath to success and exam results do not define you. Members of DYW Ayrshire and Ayrshire Chamber showcased their paths and would like thank everyone who got involved in the campaign.

If you would like to share your journey from what you left school to do and what you do now, DYW Ayrshire would love to facilitate this. You could engage with a classroom of pupils as they begin to plan their life after school. Show them the different routes they can take and inspire our future workforce. Get in touch with our team today for more information: info@dywayrshire.com

SCHOOL WORK PLACEMENT PROGRAMME

Did you know that over 1,100 school pupils are looking for work placements this school year across North and South Ayrshire? These placements give young people a real insight to the world of work and should also provide the employer with an additional support in the workplace to assist with tasks.

The Ayrshire Chamber Education Team are keen to ensure that all young people get the opportunity to take part in this programme but cannot do it without you, our Ayrshire employers.

Scan the QR code to learn the benefits to business, see when schools have selected to send their pupils on week-long work placements or to get involved in the programme.

CECCHINI’S WORK PLACEMENT

We have been in business since 1985 starting with a small 30 seater coffee shop. We have always traded in Ayrshire and inspire to take on apprentices, from front of house to back of house and in all areas. A school pupil approached us when my chef was doing a

demo in the school kitchen named Travis, his HE teacher came to meet us and organised a week’s placement through the Ayrshire Chamber. There will be a post for him in the kitchen once he finishes school to be an apprentice chef and get his chef qualification.

WHY WOODWARD SUPPORT THE PROGRAMME

We at Woodward have supported the work experience programme ran by the DYW team at the Ayrshire Chamber for many years. The benefit of such a programme allows us to work alongside education and provide a real-life working week for schoolkids in a highly complex repair and overhaul environment.

The benefits for Woodward are many, we learn as coaches and it makes our own staff stronger while providing a much-needed boost to Ayrshire schools and the wider area, we advise on the entry level requirements not only for us but for the Aerospace cluster in general.

Over the years we have had kids return to us and become

employed which has been brilliant and although some have now moved on, we know they had a marvellous journey with us from School to employment and onto bigger and better things. As career builders it started here which for us is exactly the point.

The workplace and education are working hard on alignment and for any company who can provide support will certainly benefit, every generation is different, and we get real insight into what drives the employees of the future and some insight into what we need to provide.

We are delighted to be part of this journey and will be committed to supporting for many years to come.

ASHLEIGH BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PARTNERSHIP PROJECT

Over the last 8 years Ashleigh Building have hosted pupils from Belmont Academy as part of our Annual Construction Partnership Project (CPP). This partnership involving Ashleigh Building, Ayrshire College, LMA Architects, and DYW Ayrshire was established following a meeting at Belmont Academy where David Smith, Managing Director of Ashleigh, recognised the need to develop relationships with local schools and colleges to create more opportunities for students within the construction sector and enhance their employability skills. The main goal of the Construction Partnership Project is to enhance students’ understanding of both trade and professional roles within the industry. Ayrshire College is responsible for teaching the trade-related aspects of the project, including Joinery, Taping, and Bricklaying, while Ashleigh focuses on specialised roles like

Architecture working with LMA Architects, Surveying, and Planning. Through this joint effort, students gain a thorough understanding of the wide range of roles present in the construction sector. The main focus of the 7-week programme is for 3 teams, each comprising 4 students, to engage in a combination of classroom learning and hands-on college experience. Their primary objective is to plan and develop their own housing development based on dimensions provided to them, incorporating various house types. An essential part of the programme includes a visit to one of our operational construction sites, providing students with an exclusive insight into the workings of the construction industry. During the visit, students have the opportunity to learn about different professional roles and ask questions to our on-site team about the project being delivered. Throughout this project, the students receive

guidance from personnel at Ashleigh, LMA Architects and Ayrshire College.

At the end of the 7 weeks, each group is invited back to the Ashleigh Boardroom to present their final proposals on their housing development project to a panel of judges. They will discuss their planning methods, costings, and the layout of the housing development. This year’s contestants included the Burj Khalifa, The Colosseum, and The Big Bathtub, with the Burj Khalifa emerging as the winning design.

Nikki Kean, Office Manager

Iain Forbes – Ashleigh Financial Director

The Belmont Project is a fantastic example of how partnerships can help our future generations gain experience in the construction industry. As a Director of the Ayrshire Chamber and the Financial Director at Ashleigh, I see the benefits it brings from both perspectives. I look forward to its continued success in the future.

Embracing technology can enhance productivity

Booth Welsh has a mission of ‘through collaboration, we engineer a better future’ and with that, they look to push the boundaries, beyond the human element, to collaboration with technology to optimise their operations. The team has formed an AI focus group with employees from all disciplines, to actively explore how AI can be leveraged to enhance their service offerings to clients as well as for internal use. Dedicating time and resource to strategic groups like this is invaluable for Booth Welsh, as upskilling their team in AI will lead to a wealth of benefits and ensure they are future-fit.

By utilising the power of AI, manual processes and replication of effort can be

reduced, quality and consistency of service delivery and reporting enhanced, decision making enhanced, improved sustainability and cost-reduction and business productivity improved. For the business it will also increase productivity and accelerate growth through streamlining and automating the business’s engineering consultancy services.

Booth Welsh is currently using AI for solving repetitive engineering tasks, the acceleration of complex problem solving, generation of software, marketing, business development, and recruitment. Furthering that future focus, the business has been accepted onto the AI Catalyst for Growth course through the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce.

Booth Welsh believes in collaboration over competition, and as they reap the rewards of implementing AI into their own operations, they are excited about the prospect of embedding the technology into service offerings for their clients.

After 15 years, local is more important than ever for Innovec’s growth

Celebrating its 15-year anniversary, Innovec’s Founder, Iain Wham, reflects on the journey (which will resonate with many members), and outlines his hopes for the next 15 years.

In mid-2009, having graduated and worked for a few years in industry, Iain was made redundant. With a background in engineering and IT, a passion for solving problems, and courage in his own convictions, he launched Innovec.

At the time, Innovec was a one-man band offering IT support to local businesses. As the business grew, Iain recruited apprentices as his first employees. Years later, apprenticeships are still central to the

business’ approach with one of the original recruits now being one of the team’s most experienced engineers.

Today, the company employs 14 people, supports 250+ customers (including its first client), and has recently opened a second office as part of a strategic growth plan to ensure the business maintains its local focus, values, and service levels, which Iain attributes to the business’ success.

“It’s amazing to think it’s been 15 years. I’m incredibly grateful to our team and our clients for their work and the opportunities we’ve had. We’ve learned loads, but the hardest thing has been figuring out how to grow the business

whilst maintaining the efficiency, drive and consistency which got us here in the first instance.

For me, the answer is to structure my business to remain local, regardless of how big we get.

That doesn’t just mean physically (although that’s an important part). It means being present in, and contributing to, the community and local economy; integrating with local educational institutions to recruit and develop local people; and building a team who know our clients’ businesses and the people within them.

That’s how we’re going to do it, and I can’t wait for the next 15!”

Helping young people kickstart their aviation career

Rosie McCardie graduated from Strathclyde University in November 2023 with a BEng Honours degree in Aero-Mechanical Engineering. Her studies focused on aeronautical mechanics, including advanced mechanics and dynamics, mathematical modelling and analysis, computer-aided aero-design, aerospace propulsion, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. Despite her impressive credentials, by March of this year, after many unsuccessful job applications, Rosie was still looking for employment in the local aerospace industry.

Rosie approached the Thriving Communities Employability Team at South Ayrshire Council for support. In turn, the team reached out to Storm Aviation to see if we

could assist Rosie by offering some muchneeded practical experience.

Rosie began her work experience with Storm Aviation on April 2nd this year, based within the Engineering Planning Team. From day one, Rosie threw herself enthusiastically into her new role, gaining experience as a trainee Document Controller—a critical role supporting the Storm aircraft maintenance processes at Prestwick.

Experienced colleagues remarked on how well Rosie adapted to the document control role, quickly understanding the process, asking the right questions, and completing all her tasks to an exceptional standard. None of this went unnoticed by the wider Storm Aviation team, and by the end of April, Rosie had been offered a permanent role as a Document Controller with Storm Aviation.

Rosie commented, “I have enjoyed learning the document control process and being given room to use my own initiative, which has allowed me to enhance my skills gained from university in a professional setting. I look forward to continuing my journey within the aviation industry.”
