Welcome all readers to this, Ayrshire Chamber’s Summer Edition of “Your Business”.
The theme for this issue is “International Ayrshire” which presents us with a perfect opportunity to reflect not only on international business within our region along with how the Chamber supports this all-important trade, but also on Ayrshire as a travel and tourism destination. We have, after all, got a lot to offer on that front, regardless of the weather!
We are fortunate to have a healthy mix of International Business across all three Ayrshires of various scales - from micro specialist sole traders to multi-national bluechips…we really have plenty to be proud of.
It is clear that Ayrshire is an attractive, viable locale for International trade. Supporting growth in this area aligns with the ambition at the heart of Ayrshire’s Regional Economic Strategy:
To build wealth for everyone in Ayrshire by creating opportunities for those who want to live, work, learn and invest in the region.
The Chamber supports and promotes international trade in a number of ways including provision of export training, and helping businesses take away the headaches of international documentation.
Further information is available in this edition, or alternatively, please get in touch with the International Trade team via ecert@ ayrshire-chamber.org
Ayrshire is an attractive tourist destination, underpinned not only by ferry routes into Ardrossan and Troon and of course Prestwick Airport, but also by the beauty of the landscape and coastline.
The Open Golf, to be held at Royal Troon, is just around the corner and brings with it a fantastic opportunity to showcase what Ayrshire has to offer! With tens of thousands of spectators expected, not to mention players, their entourage and of course media crews, opportunities across hospitality, retail, food & drinks supply chains and logistics are plentiful.
And, via media crews and social media posts, our rugged Ayrshire coastline will be beamed across the globe. What better global advert for Ayrshire?
Enjoy our Summer edition, and best wishes for a successful and sunshine-filled summer!

Over £7,650 raised for Crosshouse Children’s Fund at Glasgow Kiltwalk
Local charity Crosshouse Children’s Fund enjoyed an incredible day at the recent Glasgow Kiltwalk, as over 130 people walked for Ayrshire’s babies and children in hospital.
Whether taking on the Wee Wander, Big Stroll or Mighty Stride, each step helped to raise vital funds for Family Support Services, Medical Equipment, Research, Play and Events, and Enhancements which the charity fund across hospitals in Ayrshire and Arran.
The charity would like to give a special thank you to Ayrshire Chamber Members who walked for their local children’s ward – The Park Hotel, GH Resourcing, Thistle Help, McSherry Halliday, Stagecoach West Scotland, and Buzzworks Holdings. Combined, these amazing businesses raised over £7,650 for this local charity.
Formed in 2019, Crosshouse Children’s Fund has invested more than £350,000 in projects and services for young people in that time. Rebekah McGinn, Fundraising
Manager, said “On behalf of our young patients, I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the Glasgow Kiltwalk. Your dedication is truly inspiring, and your support will make a significant difference to the lives of the children and families we support. Pro Paints launches SQA-approved airless spray course
Pro Paints is an independent decorating centre based in Ayr, offering high quality paints to the trade and public, as well as a working spray shop.
The Pro Paints team have been running spray courses over the past three years to decorators, joinery companies and many others, and realised that there were no courses available that formally recognise these skills. There was no set standard, and so the team began developing an Airless Spray Painting course.
In April 2024, Pro Paints completed the long process of developing this new SQA credit rated SCQF level 6 Airless Spray Painting course. What makes this course so significant, is that it is the first of its kind, establishing a new benchmark for the industry.
The course is designed to help students, professionals or anyone interested in enhancing their painting skills. It is carried out over a five-day period and covers different topics from understanding how an airless machine works and builds pressure, to health and safety.
With this exciting new course now launched, Pro Paints have set their sights on delivering it as part of their new SQA Approved Training Academy.
Students carrying out their apprenticeships in colleges will be able to take this course as an advanced craft.
Pro Paints are delighted that the course has been credit rated by SQA, a huge achievement for the team. Students can rest easy in the knowledge that the course is to the very highest of standards. For more information on the course, please contact pro-paints-@outlook.com

High expenditure on labour costs, materials, overheads, energy and tax bills, combined with difficulties recruiting staff, have put a brutal squeeze on small and medium-sized businesses.
The challenging outlook is revealed in the Scottish Chambers of Commerce’s Quarterly Economic Indicator, in which half of all Ayrshire companies consulted said they would have to raise their prices this quarter.
Ayrshire Chamber CEO Claire Baird said:
“Companies in all sectors are facing massive cost pressures, and the message
‘Ayrshire businesses are not invincible’ says leader in call for support State-of-the-art renewables training centre opens
Ayrshire College opened its state-ofthe-art Renewables Training Centre of Excellence last month, dedicated to low-carbon heating technologies. This cutting-edge facility positions Ayrshire College at the forefront of sustainable energy education, equipping students with the skills and knowledge essential for the burgeoning green energy sector. It aligns with the Scottish Government’s New Build Heat Standards, which mandate that from 1st of April, new homes are not allowed to install direct emission heating systems.
This two-storey building provides a flexible learning space that can adapt to emerging technologies, allowing Ayrshire College to offer vocational training in sustainable and SMART technologies alongside traditional

Some 55 per cent of firms in the county reported increased concern from taxation, while 80 per cent of Ayrshire firms cited labour costs as a pressure on their business.
Companies surveyed for the report included an Ayrshire retail firm that said the public expectation for prices to remain the same, despite increased costs for businesses, meant “the cost of doing business and having sustainable growth in more deprived areas

Students can engage with real-world scenarios, ensuring they are job-ready for a sector experiencing rapid growth and innovation. This initiative aligns with national and global efforts to reduce carbon footprints, making Ayrshire College a pivotal player in the transition to a greener future.
Since the launch, the College has already added value to 29 plumbing apprentices in their final year by certifying them in Water Byelaws, Unvented Hot Water, and Heat Pumps.
By supporting employers wishing to upskill their workforce in renewable technologies, Ayrshire College promotes regional economic

Ferry doubts spur Auchrannie Resort to reassure visitors
In response to recent ferry disruptions, Auchrannie Resort has boldly introduced a new ‘BOOK WITH CONFIDENCE’ policy, designed to reassure potential visitors. The cornerstone of this initiative will offer free of charge accommodation to guests affected by homeward travel disruption.
Auchrannie, along with numerous Arran businesses, is facing significant and urgent financial challenges due to a lack of visitor confidence in the ferry service which is severely impacting forward bookings.
The business has resolved to implement measures, which may incur significant costs, to address the decreased demand. This policy aims to mitigate financial concerns for prospective guests affected by ferry disruptions when travelling to the resort from
Troon, Ardrossan, and Claonaig.
In a bid to boost forward demand, the customer-focused strategy will include offering guests FREE OF CHARGE accommodation, no fee cancellations and the timely return of any deposits paid should they experience delays or disruption to their journey to or from the island.
Linda Johnston, Co-Founder & Executive Chairperson added “Each year, over 750,000
journeys are made to and from the Isle of Arran by ferry, with the vast majority encountering no issues. However, occasional weather and technical problems can disrupt travel plans. Understanding the potential worry this causes, Auchrannie Resort has taken these proactive and robust measures to ensure that any undue stress and concern by their guests is minimised”.

10 years of better business water
Castle Water’s mission to provide quality and trusted water retail services to businesses in Scotland with an unwavering commitment to fairness and transparency is as true today as it was when they first launched in 2014.
In 2024, the team at Castle Water are celebrating 10 years of defining the business of water as the UK’s largest independent business water retailer. Their continued investment in superior technology and their customer-centric mind-set ensures they’ll keep that promise. 10 years of staying ahead of the curve

In the last 12 months alone, water market operator MOSL confirmed that Castle Water is outperforming other major water retailers on key meter reading tasks. Their 96% success rate in meter reading tasks surpasses all other major retailers, and MOSL’s “Holistic Reporting” score
And Castle Water aren’t stopping there. Exciting developments in the pipeline include consumption charting to help their customers improve their water efficiency, and online banking options.
The Castle Water team would like to thank their customers for choosing and trusting them, their partners for supporting and collaborating with them, and their colleagues at Castle Water for their commitment and valuable contributions.

Ayrshire Chamber represented at the House of Lords!
It isn't every day that you get invited for lunch at the House of Lords...
“It was a real privilege to be invited along to the British Chambers of Commerce lunch to represent Ayrshire” Craig, Vice President of Ayrshire Chamber commented after the event. Both he and President Alison Somerville were invited by British Chamber of Commerce President Baroness Martha Lane Fox and Director General Shevaun Haviland, to represent the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and our vibrant Ayrshire membership.
“There certainly was a strong international feel,” Alison said. “I was sitting next to the CCO of the British-Norwegian Chamber – a very interesting lady who was really keen to make connections. Alison and Craig also had the opportunity to meet investors from across the Middle East as well as colleagues closer to
home from Cambridge to Renfrew and discuss opportunities for collaboration.
“Craig shared a table with a representative Chamber representatives from the Netherlands, Hungary. The striking element was that many of the opportunities and challenges we have as chambers are shared internationally.”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a hot topic of conversation, delivered by guest speaker and EdTech Founder and ex-barrister Priya Lakhani OBE, who is something of an expert in the AI area. She explored how UK and global society is moving from a productivity and personalisation focus to one of automation and augmentation, saying: “For the business community the financial opportunities are exceptional but as business leaders we need to be seeking them”.
Thinking of going international? Get a mentor!
We live in an age where there is a never-ending stream of advice, opinions and expertise at our fingertips In truth trying to cut through the sheer volume of advice and information can be exhausting and confusing!
Not to mention the fact that we often don’t know whether we can trust the information that internet searches bring back.
So where can we turn for experienced advice that we can trust to help us achieve stronger performance? In business, the answer is increasingly, mentors.
Almost every well-known name who
has achieved business success credits at least one mentor. Think Richard Branson who was mentored by Sir Freddie Laker, and Mark Zuckerberg who was mentored by Steve Jobs. What we see is the refined version of a person who has had a long journey to their success. What we often don’t realise is that they will have had a number of helping hands along the way who helped pull them to success.
When it comes to considering making the leap to trading internationally, particularly post-Brexit, it can be a minefield, working out the best routes to market, navigating the complexities of exporting, and making sure you spot the best opportunities.
If you are considering making the move to international expansion why not start by getting the support of a mentor. Reach out via Membership@ayrshire-chamber.org or call 01292 678666

Top tips to navigate export rules
It’s a big world out there, and it has become a bit more complicated –but having an experienced team of seasoned exporters in your corner could make all the difference.
Here are some essential pointers to help you effectively navigate the export rules and regulations:
Get registered
An Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI number) could be necessary if you’re exporting goods outside Great Britain. You’ll also need an EORI number if you’re going to apply for export licences using SPIRE.
Consider also getting signed up with the Chamber, if you haven’t already joined. About 10 per cent of British companies export, but among companies in the UK Chamber network, that figure is over 60 per cent.
Know your destination
Make sure you understand export regulations specifically for the market you’re targeting. If you need help with this, consider taking up the free or subsidised support available from Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Scottish Enterprise.
Classify your products
Classify your products according to Harmonised System (HS) codes, so you can correctly determine applicable export controls and duties, depending on your exports’ destination. Check if your goods need an export licence or certificate and check the VAT guidance.
Get processes in place
The complicated nature of customs processes means that most British businesses use intermediaries to complete these for them. Considder staff who could take on the
work, or whether you have the skills, expertise or experience to do this yourself.
Ayrshire Chamber’s international trade team can help you through every step of this, with tools such as the eCert system that greatly streamlines the process documentation.
Stay up to date
Export regulations are often updated or changed, so make sure you stay abreast of any changes that may impact on your international trading activities. Ayrshire Chamber’s team provides regular updates and holds seminars on export regulations and best practices, which can help you stay ahead of the curve on any upcoming changes.

Trump Turnberry hosts European journalists, showcasing Ayrshire as premier golf destination
Forbes Five Star Trump Turnberry Resort recently hosted an exceptional European Golf Press Trip consisting of twelve journalists from France, Germany, Holland, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden, with the addition of three UK-based Golf Content Creators.
The group indulged in the offerings throughout Ayrshire on the West Coast of Scotland, where they experienced Five Star Accommodation at Trump Turnberry Resort, bucket list golf, a tour of Culzean Castle, Turnberry Adventures outdoor pursuits and fine dining.
As the home of three Open Championship venues within a 40-minute drive of each other, it was important to showcase the region as the ideal destination for golf fanatics.
With a full itinerary, the Press Trip experienced a round of golf on the iconic Prestwick Old Course, well-known as the
birthplace of the Open Championship and rich in golfing history.
As well as a round on Trump Turnberry’s very own, world-renowned Ailsa Course (Four time Open Championship Venue). The Ailsa, as a true Links Golf Experience, carries through immaculate conditions, with outstanding views
of the iconic Ailsa Craig and the Irish Sea, which always exceeds expectations.
The Ailsa’s sister course, King Robert the Bruce also sparked great conversation among the group, as a challenging and must-play golf course.

AN INTERNATIONAL OVERVIEW
Hello, Bonjour, Guten Tag, Hola. Unfortunately for me that is about all I have in my repertoire of international languages but luckily for our young people in Ayrshire there are many of opportunities to expand their language skills and hear about global opportunities.
Our Education Team linked with the Franco-British Chamber for a 2nd year
running to provide engaging live online workshops with local schools. Recently we held 3 large scale career fairs for young people across Ayrshire with many international companies in attendance showcasing opportunities across the globe as well as those closer to home. With many counting down until their own international summer adventures I ask you to take a moment to think about how you could play a part
INNOVATIVE PROJECTS
In March 2024, Southcraig School successfully launched 3 new innovative school projects as part of their DYW activities within the Senior Phase department.
These included the Sunshine Café, Southcraig Market Garden and the Marvellous Makers. The launch was attended by the Lord Lieutenant plus other guests and was a morning full of joy and pride, allowing pupils
to show off their talents and hard work. Through DYW Ayrshire funding, we received a barista machine and a large polytunnel. Both items have not only benefitted the school community, but allowed pupils to further develop their knowledge, skills and experiences which they can use when they transition to post school destinations.

fruit kebabs.
Thank you to the staff at NHS, 2020 Opticians, Crosshouse Children’s Fund, Sainsburys and S6 pupils from Prestwick Academy for supporting the event. The primary school pupils had a great day.
STORM AVIATION
S6 student, Casia, from Prestwick Academy first arrived at the Storm Aviation hangar at Prestwick Airport at the end of January 2024.
That was day one of her planned fiveweek extended school work-experience programme with us. To say she was somewhat nervous and reserved on that day would probably be an understatement. Here was a shy young lady, absolutely determined to be a future aircraft engineer, experiencing her first daunting day in an aircraft hangar surrounded by licensed aircraft engineers and mechanics. We worried she would be overwhelmed by the situation. We needn’t have bothered. Casia was soon firmly out of her shell and getting involved in planning and document control functions before progressing on to numerous other tasks including shadowing of aircraft cabin work, engines, wing panel installs and engine runs. Casia has jumped at every opportunity we
GLOW HOMES
Glow Homes were thrilled to have Jared from St Matthew’s Academy attend our very busy head office in Saltcoats for work experience during the month of May.
Jared was meeting and greeting customers, carrying out general admin duties and even had the chance to go out to some of our properties along with one of our property consultants to viewings and inspections. Jared also proved to be quite handy around the office and even hung some boards etc for us. We even managed to squeeze in a few nice lunches this week during his visit. What a polite
have put in front of her in all areas of our business, and has excelled in everything she has been involved in. She is an inspirational young lady.
Casia has really enjoyed her time with Storm and is now focussed even harder on realising her dream of becoming a licensed aircraft engineer. Casia is hoping to secure an engineering apprenticeship position with us when she finishes school this year, and we would be very happy to have her.
Mike Stewart, Storm Aviationhelpful young man and we have no hesitations in welcoming this scheme next year.

Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero and Energy, Màiri McAllan said:

The steer for activity and shape of the hub during its initial phase was informed by communities and organisations in conversations that took place late last year and has been supported by the Scottish Communities Climate Action Network (SCCAN) ‘Investing in Regional Networks’ programme.

Poor waste management can cost more than you think
For UK businesses, the true cost of poor waste management can be as much as 4 to 10% of turnover. It is clear there are significant business and environmental benefits that can be secured from effective waste management and recycling.
More efficient approaches can reduce permanent costs and generate significant savings. Businesses can save money and be more efficient by focusing on how to reduce business waste and how to deal with the waste that remains. And it’s the law.
No matter the size or sector of a business, the requirement to manage and safely dispose of commercial waste is the same. All businesses can positively benefit from some simple choices and changes in behaviour. Effective waste management will save money and believe or not it can be relatively easy.
Reassessing packaging methods, going paperless and always using a licensed waste carrier are obvious and simple ways to save money and keep businesses legal. Undertaking a waste management audit sounds a nightmare, but it is a great way to find out areas that are causing more waste and costing money.
The Councils dedicated Commercial Waste Teams in Ayrshire can help to assess business needs and requirements. This comes with a guarantee that customers will be 100% compliant with all relevant legislation and regulations. Every business is required to dispose of their waste responsibly and legally.
For help, advice and services to tackle your business waste needs, contact your Commercial Waste Team.

Juniper Financial Planning help Ayrshire prepare for the unexpected
Having just launched Juniper Financial Planning, the directors are preparing for the unexpected now, to allow them to concentrate on looking after clients and growing the business in the future.
Managing Director Ross Hunter said, ‘It’s like the old story of the cobblers’ weans always having the worst shoes. If we advise clients to protect against the unexpected, Juniper should do the same’.
How are company debts to be repaid if a Director or critical employee die? Liabilities like this can be insured. What happens to shares in the company, if a shareholder dies? Do the beneficiaries want them and can the other shareholders buy them? This can be insured, benefitting everyone. Ross confirmed, ‘this is something Juniper needs to do as a priority’.
The Juniper Directors previously worked for abrdn and benefitted from a significant death-in-service package. Their families no longer have that protection. Small companies can set up Relevant Life Policies, to provide similar cover for staff. This is a legitimate business expense and is particularly tax efficient. Ross maintains, ‘for Directors like us, setting up a Relevant Life Policy is a no-brainer’.
The final consideration is covering the cost of replacing a business critical employee, in the event of their illness or death. Ross maintains;
“if you have critical staff, Key Person cover provides the funds to bring in support quickly without causing cash-flow problems.”
