AYRSHIRE BUSINESS AT ITS VERY BEST Wishing you all a warm and celebratory welcome to the Winter Edition of our Ayrshire Chamber’s magazine “Your Business”! Our theme is Celebration, to reflect on what we have to celebrate here in Ayrshire and across our membership and events. It’s hard to believe that we are in the run up to Christmas – it’s been a busy few months at the Chamber as I’m sure it’s been with you and your businesses too. Hopefully many of you were able to join in some of the Chamber events around Business Week back in October. The launch event marked the unveiling of Ayrshire’s Regional Economic Strategy Implementation Plan by Chair and Alastair Dobson (Taste of Arran) and attended by many businesses and local authority leaders. This launch marks a major milestone for the Regional Economic Strategy – a strategy launched in June of this year by the Ayrshire Economic Partnership Board.
The ambition of this Strategy is to build wealth for everyone in Ayrshire by creating opportunities for those who want to live, work, learn and invest in the region. Never has it been so important for the private and public sectors to work together and we, the Chamber, are looking for business leaders to get involved. Please reach out if want to be a part of turning this ambition into reality. The week ended with a touch of real magic, at the Awards Dinner hosted by TV personality Ben Hanlin and what a night it was! 16 worthy winners amongst 49 outstanding finalists, magic, music and a bit of dancing. Highlights are featured within the issue. Looking forward, we’ve very recently opened applications for our Business Excellence Awards. This is going to be another wonderful celebration at the Annual Dinner, on Friday 23rd February 2024 where finalists and winners will be celebrated, hosted at Lochside House Hotel in the heart of East Ayrshire.
Enjoy our winter issue, and best wishes for the coming weeks and the festive season.

LOCAL MUSIC FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF SUCCESS
YOUR BUSINESS | WINTER 2023
WinterStorm is perhaps one of Ayrshire's least known success stories yet it contributes up to half a million pounds to the local economy every November!
4
The annual rock festival takes place at Troon Concert Hall over the last weekend in November and this year will sell more than 3000 tickets for the first time with visitors from across the world - twelve countries this year - accounting for more than half of those sales and filling every hotel room in Troon and many more beyond with more than 2000 bednights estimated for 2023 alone. The event is promoted and operated by Ayrshire marketing business Plan B and combines thirty years of knowledge of the tourism and events markets to create one of the most popular classic rock events in the UK. With a mix of old and new the festival
blends old school heavy metal, with blues, AOR and has welcomed some of the world's most famous musicians through its seven year history. Founder and owner, Ian McCaig, explains, “What seemed like a crazy idea in 2016 has evolved into a major contributor to the off season tourism sector in Ayrshire and highlights just what can be done with niche
events. The WinterStorm audience comprises a wide demographic but they know how to spend money when they are visiting. In many ways WinterStorm is a case study in creating sustainable events in the most difficult climate and we are immensely proud of the various collaborations with local businesses and community groups developed along the way." www.winterstorm.co.uk
On 29th September Honeypot Children's Charity hosted their first respite break for young carers at Honeypot Dalleagles in New Cumnock. The 12 young carers from Edinburgh, 6 boys and 6 girls aged between 8 and 11, came for a fun packed weekend away from juggling school with their stressful responsibilities at home. Included in the Honeypot break experience was a visit to Head of Ayr Farm Park where the inner-city children’s imaginations soared while ‘driving’ the giant combine harvester they sat in, petting exotic animals including Wallabies and Llamas and coming face to face with scary Tarantulas and snapping reptiles. They also visited Dumfries House, where they negotiated the maze and had a marvellous time playing in the soft play area. The children fed back that the most fun had was free time chilling with other young carers, where shy and nervous children found their confidence and voice to take part in activities such as a talent show. The children relished the American Theme Night, where hot dogs and giant Spaghetti Bolognese was served to them. On Friday 6th October, a second group of young carers arrived at Honeypot Dalleagles. As they settled in, generous guests at Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce’s Business Awards raised a fantastic £4,975 for Honeypot in the charity raffle at Ayr Racecourse. The raffle proceeds will fund a full three-day respite break for 12 young carers at Honeypot Dalleagles, providing a much-needed break from their taxing responsibilities at home and the chance to create happy childhood memories. www.honeypot.org.uk

All three apprentices have hit the ground running, with one recent employee, Adam,
already winning Innovec’s internal employee of the month award. Adam commented; “It’s been a great few months and I already feel like I’m part of the team. 35 Business Bodies unite to call for rates freeze
Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce has a helpful business mentoring platform - Connect Me – available for Silver members and above, that is designed to support your business to reach it’s true potential. Access over 50 highly experienced, knowledgeable mentors who have the right skills to help solve your problems, share knowledge and pass on valuable experience. Hear from one of our previous Mentees, Carl MacDonald from Mactu Training, on their experience during the Mentoring process;
Thirty-five leading business representative groups and industry bodies have jointly written to the Scottish Government’s Deputy First Minister and Finance Secretary asking her to freeze the business rate in the coming financial year.
“I took advantage of the mentoring service offered by the Chamber. I was paired with Iain from IM training.
Scotland’s business rate is already at a 24-year high and a fifth higher than at the start of the previous decade. If increased in line with current CPI inflation this could see ratepayers across Scotland face an extra £205 million on their rates bills from next Spring. This would be at odds with the Scottish Government’s recently stated aim to use business rates to “boost business”.
“I am just entering my second year of business and Iain gave me some valuable pointers and suggestions which have helped me on my journey.
The joint letter from the business representative and trade bodies was submitted to Shona Robison MSP, the Scottish Government’s Finance Secretary, on 2 November. Read the full letter here: https://bit.ly/RatesFreezeLetter
“He provided me with some fantastic support, which included lots of advice, guidance and mentorship.
”I would recommend this program to anyone looking to build their business or learn more from those who walked a similar path previously.” If you are ready to take the next step and start your mentoring journey, please reach out to Lisa Stewart via lstewart@ayrshire-chamber.org or call 01292 678666.

IT’S BEEN A WINNING YEAR FOR THORNE TRAVEL
10 YEARS OF AYRSHIRE COLLEGE Ten years ago - on 1 August 2013 - Ayr College, Kilmarnock College, and the Kilwinning and Largs campuses of James Watt College merged to create Ayrshire College. The special milestone was celebrated by the College with an all-staff event at its impressive Kilmarnock Campus on 10 August 2023, when curriculum staff returned from their summer break. The 10th anniversary event allowed everyone to take stock of their achievements over the years and look forward to exciting plans outlined by the College’s Senior Leadership Team. These plans highlight the important role Ayrshire College plays in building a strong, vibrant and inclusive Ayrshire by improving employability, supporting economic development and widening access to education, skills and training. The Ayrshire Growth Deal will position Ayrshire as one of the UK’s leading centres of Aerospace and Space activity through an ambitious and transformational Aerospace and Space Programme – and Ayrshire College will be at the heart of it by meeting the skills needs of employers.
Ayrshire based travel agency, Thorne Travel, has had an outstanding year, receiving numerous awards and recognitions. Among them, they were voted Scotland's Top Travel Agency by the Travel Trade Gazette and won the Best Small Agency in Scotland at the Travel Weekly Agent Achievement Awards. Since Ayrshire College was established 10 years ago, it has been recognised locally, regionally and nationally as an organisation that makes a positive difference to the lives of students, the community, to Ayrshire’s economy and to Scotland. Throughout the past 10 years, there have been many highlights at the College, including the opening of a new Kilmarnock Campus in 2016 and the opening of the Willie Mackie Skills Hub in Kilwinning this year, which will provide students with an outstanding learning experience in sustainable and SMART technologies alongside traditional construction trades. This month, students from the Supported Learning department planted Daffodils, the 10th anniversary flower, at the College’s three main campuses to mark the milestone. ENERGY AGENCY'S ECO-FRIENDLY TRANSITION TO NEW OFFICES Known for its commitment to promoting energy efficiency and sustainability, the Energy Agency is excited to announce its recent move to new offices in Heathfield, Ayr. One of the most remarkable achievements of the move was their commitment to recycling and reusing office supplies and furniture. In partnership, with local charities and ethical organisations, over 94% of the office materials that were no longer needed for the new space have been successfully repurposed. This collaborative effort has prevented these items from ending up in landfill, aligning perfectly with their ethos to advocate for sustainable waste management practices. The new location offers more sustainable
travel options, making it easier for employees to reduce their own carbon footprints. With easier access to public transport routes, promoting cycling, and encouraging walking, they are demonstrating eco-friendly commuting for other businesses in the area. Director, Liz Marquis said “As we settle into our new headquarters, we reflect on our journey as an organisation dedicated to reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainability. Our efforts have been recognised with awards for Vulnerable Customer Support and Project Management, but our true reward lies in contributing to a greener, more sustainable future for all. We are excited to continue our vital work from our new premises and we invite everyone to join us in our mission to reduce carbon emissions, embrace renewable energy
solutions, and make a positive impact on the environment. Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future for our community and beyond.” You will find the Energy Agency at 2 Forbes Drive, Heathfield, Ayr KA8 9FG. Tel: 01292 521896 www.energyagency.org.uk

INTRODUCTION FROM REGIONAL LEAD With 2024 quickly approaching I would like to take this opportunity to thank my team and our local employers who continue to have such a passion to help develop our young people for the world of work. The theme of this magazine is Celebration and we are delighted to be able to share some winners of recent
awards. Congratulations go to James Frew for winning the DYW Award at the Ayrshire Business Awards. We’re also thrilled for GE Caledonian who won the Ayrshire Apprenticeship Challenge. As we plan for 2024 we continue to ask for support from our local and national employers to build on this great work and give young
people the chance to flourish in their future endeavours. Gillian Longmuir, Regional Lead at Developing the Young Workforce – Ayrshire
AYRSHIRE APPRENTICESHIP CHALLENGE Between April and September Apprentices from Ayrshire College, GE Caledonian and Collins Aerospace signed up for the opportunity to plan and complete a challenge that would be of benefit to their local community. The challenge gives apprentices the opportunity to develop new skills out with their everyday learning whilst allowing the chance to showcase their talents and learning in new ways. Prior to the finale apprentices took part in a presentation workshop led by Margorie Calder of Ocean Blue Consulting to help build confidence and skills for presenting to the panel of judges.
YOUR BUSINESS | WINTER SPRING 2021 2023
The teams challenges were:
28
GE: Engaged with YIP World during Science Week with engineering games and built a STEM station to provide young people with information about engineering careers. Collins: Built an outdoor learning space for pupils at Kincaidston Primary. Ayrshire College Hairdressing: Over a five-week period, apprentices ran a hair workshop for children aged 10-16 in Coylton.
The finale event allowed judges Angela Cox from Ayrshire College, Claire Baird from Ayrshire Chamber and Claire Tooze from Skills Development Scotland, the chance to hear directly from the apprentices about their challenge. While GE Caledonian emerged triumphant, securing both Best Presentation and Best Overall Project awards, it was evident that all teams had delivered exceptional projects that their communities will benefit for months to come.

AUCHRANNIE RESORT’S COMMITMENT TO THE YPG “Auchrannie Resort is committed to our ongoing support of the Young Person’s Guarantee and the work of DYW Ayrshire to offer job opportunities, workplace experiences and longterm career pathways for young people. We recognise the historic challenges to attract and retain young talent in the hospitality sector and continue to work to demonstrate that there are varied and meaningful career opportunities at Auchrannie and within the hospitality industry. We understand the importance of engaging with young people at a school age and have been lucky enough to be involved in a number of new, innovative careers events, industry tester sessions over the last 12 months and to see some of the DYW innovate schools projects in action, most recently at Arran High School. Our team enjoy the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences with young people and this is an area we hope to do even more of in the future. Our unique location and team accommodation availability offers young people (aged 18 and over for accommodation) the chance to gain independence, life skills and enable ongoing personal growth in addition to the skills and experiences they develop at work. We also have
flexible part time opportunities for young people living on Arran to fit around their education or other commitments. Auchrannie firmly believes in fair work practices and ensures that all team members aged 16 and over are paid the Real Living Wage. From day one we support, guide and empower our team members to develop both personally and professionally. We offer a huge number of bespoke hands on and online training courses inhouse and work with some amazing external partners like UHI and HIT Scotland to offer unique and certified learning opportunities. We have recently launched new Level 5 Apprenticeship opportunities within Food and Beverage and Housekeeping and are excited to develop our apprenticeship offer further over the coming months. Whether a young person has a desire to become our next Resort Director or Head Chef or chooses moves on to work in another hospitality business or different industry, we strongly believe that the skills and experiences the gain at Auchrannie help set them up for a successful future. AYRSHIRE BUSINESS WEEK Early October saw the return of Ayrshire Business Week and we were delighted to be involved in a programme of events. To join us during a week of prestigious events was S6 pupil Keira from Garnock Academy on her work placement. 4th October marked the B2B Exhibition Event at the Park Hotel with over 70 businesses in attendance. Each year, the DYW team aim to impress with a topical theme and this year we capitalised on the recent Mission Impossible movie. We asked employers to choose their mission and how they would like to support our local young people. If they accepted the mission, they were entered into a raffle for their chance to win a prize. Congratulations to winner Fiona from Craufurdland Estates.

4 Ayrshire schools interested in Travel and Tourism received a presentation from VisitArran's CEO Sheila Gilmore in October. Schools heard about VisitArran, the Arran Trust and Arran's ambition to become a UNESCO Global Geopark. Following the presentation, there was opportunity to ask questions about job opportunities, attractions, and visitor management.

The session is just one of several that VisitArran has offered to students and young people. It was a pleasure to be asked to do this. Hopefully the schools found it beneficial, and it supported their studies. If even one young person is inspired to pursue a career within the tourism industry, that's a bonus. My thanks to the Emma and Jenna from the Chamber and to the teaching staff for the invitation. Sheila Gilmore, Visit Arran
FUSING ART AND SCIENCE - SCOTTISH MARITIME MUSEUM
In recent months we have been delighted to attend the launches of 3 new Innovative Projects: Fusing Art and Science included an exhibition tour and talk with local artist Keith Salmon and sound engineers Graham Byron and Drew Kirkland. The pupils explored how 2D art was combined with soundscapes in their ‘Painting with Sound’ exhibition and were invited to try out sound mixing during the session.
WORK EXPERIENCE
British Society of Scientific Glassblowers Chair Robert McLeod and Dr Ayako Tani gave live glassblowing demonstrations with a few pupils getting the chance to be handson and investigate the skills behind scientific glassblowing, which is sadly, today, on the Heritage Crafts Association’s Red List of Endangered Crafts. Finally, Glass artist and City of Glasgow College Lecturer Eilidh McKenzie was joined by award winning glass artist Steven Graham to demonstrate their process and talk careers in the creative sector and further education opportunities. 8 pupils from across South Ayrshire secondary schools attend a work experience week with 9 Local Law Firms. Pupils got the opportunity to meet each firm, sit in on a Trial and meet with 4 sheriffs to hear about their pathways into their careers.
Ayr is very lucky to be home to a Faculty of Solicitors which is increasingly active in supporting and developing younger people’s educational and professional journeys. This year, we were delighted to launch our Faculty Foundation (which offers financial assistance to students embarking on a law degree) as well as our Work Experience Week and soon, we hope to launch a mentoring scheme for students with an interest in working within the legal industry in Ayr.
Thank you to: Black Hay Solicitors, D.W. Shaw, Logans, The McKinstry Company, Elizabeth Welsh Family Law Practice, AC White & Sprang Terrace Solicitors. We would also like to thank Ayr Sheriff Court for hosting the pupils alongside the 4 sheriffs who took time out to meet with the pupils.

me was the “meet and greet” event at the end of the week with all four of our local Sheriffs, where the participating students were given the chance to speak with our Sheriffs to learn all about their careers, giving the students an invaluable experience which I hope they will remember in years to come. Law firms are no different to many other businesses in Ayrshire when it comes to facing challenges in succession planning and hopefully, running events like our Work Experience Week is something that other industries can draw on, to give local young people a flavour of the diverse, high quality work that is available to them right on their doorstep. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MANCINI’S Who would have thought 110 years later when Antonio Mancini left Atina near Cassino, Italy in 1892 as a 7-year-old boy looking for a better life, his company would still be trading today on the Ayrshire coast.
Antonio’s early life took him to London, Dundee, Glasgow and finally arrived in Ayr in 1910. 1913 he set up Mancini’s ice cream. After peddling the streets of Ayr for 10 years with his horse and cart selling ice cream 1925 saw the opening of the Royal café in New Road, Ayr. During the 30’s/40’s Mancini had ice cream kiosks on Ayr seafront. This café was a landmark in Ayr trading for 105 years. After coming through two world wars and many recessions. The company thrived through good and bad
times with son Michele at the helm for over 60 years.
Son Filippo took charge after Dad retired pushing the company forward with his involvement through the Ice Cream Alliance. Mancini’s were supplying wholesale Ice Cream through the west of Scotland for around thirty years, Early 2000’s saw Mancini’s enter the Wedding industry with ice cream carts and alco slush and this was a massive hit averaging around 100/ 130 weddings per year. Today, Filippo, 3-time national President of the Ice cream Alliance, four times UK national ice cream champions, 3-time winner of Scottish wedding awards. YOUR BUSINESS | WINTER 2023
Nicolson Digital Ltd is a specialist mapping company based in Largs. Many people associate them with the traditional folded paper street or tourist maps.

A significant part of their business is the supply of mapping data, production of Large Scale Ordnance Survey (OS) extracts for planning applications and land registration purposes. They even prepare the mapping for specific events throughout Scotland. (Including Santas’ annual Sleigh Tour of Largs.) At the end of July the Scottish Government, in the form of eDevelopment. Scot, invited companies to submit tenders to allow customers to access Large Scale Ordnance Survey Data to create their own plan for an application. Though it took a lot of time and effort, Nicolson Digital Ltd were delighted to be able to submit a tender.
Director Robin Nicolson said “Preparing the tender response was a big task and we are delighted to have been one of the successful applicants”. From the 1st of September Nicolson Digital Ltd are one of only two companies that have been approved for the supply of planning application maps on the eDevelopment.scot website. The eDevelopment.scot website directs anyone that requires a Large Scale Ordnance Survey extract towards https://nicolsondigital.com. Once here, the website allows clients to create their plan ready for submission to the relevant authority. The plan itself is accurate, current and meets all the technical and legal requirements for applications. Should customers have any issues in creating their plan, the team at Nicolson Digital is on hand to provide expert assistance.
