RESEARCHMETHODOLOGIES FORHUMANENVIRONMENT

THESIS RESEARCH ORIENTATION TITLE: DIGITALLY ENHANCED MULTI-SENSORY ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH PROBLEM • In the modern ages, we forget the various disabilities that are a part of the human race. For those who belong to the autistic spectrum or are mentally unwell, there are a lot of challenges even in the digital age. How is it possible to make their wellbeing better through appropriate architectural interventions? And to what extent is this better than conventional buildings? PRECEDENT RESEARCH WORK • Research has been executed in the digital fabrication of multi-sensory environment. • Various architectural products are in the market that can be used in designing buildings to enhance the experience of special users’ group. ANALYSIS • Study of precedent Research Papers has helped in deriving a structured research methodology for this thesis topic. • The case studies have provided solid proof in terms of Post Occupancy Evaluation that the multi-sensory environments are better for the special users’ group. HYPOTHESIS • The multi-sensory environment can be able to accommodate wider range of users with the interference of digital fabrication and customization. The proof shall be the outcome of this research.

BACKGROUND STUDY PREVIEW INTO THETOPIC

SEARCHSTRATEDGY -Process based Design -Digital Fabrication -Personal Interest in Micro-environments

RESEARCHMETHODOLOGY An integrated design-research-based double-diamond method (Design Council 2015) the project team added a third feedback phase toassess impact, which included implementation and evaluation of possible solutions

TOPICSELECTIONCRITERIA For research regarding thesis topic: DIGITALFABRICATIONIN MULTI-SENSORYENVIRONMENT

RESEARCHMETHODS This research paper is a result of analyzing various case studies where timber shells are used, and also understanding the robotic CNC cutting methods.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY DIAGRAM

Design research methodology diagramand project timeline. The process supports a translation of insights to “define” the context of a problem, which informs the “design” as developed through iterative ideation and prototyping, translating the final design to “delivery” and evaluation. Key development moments for the sensory cocoon are markedwith colored dots along the iterative design timeline. (Credit: Melissa Hoelting, HKS)

DESIGN CRITERIA

. Design Guidelines for Translating Discrete Sensory Needs into a Built Solution

NODE PRODUCTION WORKFLOW Diagram for the computational workflow of the algorithmic design and parametric modelling script developed for node productions.

QUASIEXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH

DESIGN MODELS

Illustrations of structural analysis modelling for deflection (exaggerated) and fixity. PROTOTYPES were 3D printed using: Lulzbot Taz 6 (PLA and nylon) and MakerBot Replicator Generation 5 (PLA) Material Used: Polylactic Acid (PLA)

Final sensory hub design as installed, consisting of three zones (active, respite, and sensory cocoon) and two entryways (transition areas from the classroom)

DESIGN CRITERIA

Comparison of average median values of sound and light levels between the classroom and sensory cocoon
