His first book, Quantum City (Architectural Press, 2002) is a seminal work on urbanity now influencing urban design education and practice worldwide. Its follow-up, Quantum Environments: Architecture in the New Paradigm, is in the works, while two co-authored books, New Urbanism and Beyond (Rizzoli, 2008) and The Design Dictionary (Birkhauser, 2007), are forthcoming. Arida's research focuses on developing relational languages to analyze and design the urban realm. These frameworks are informed by the “new sciences” namely quantum theory, emergence and self-regulation, complexity and fuzzy logic. He has taught at the American University of Beirut, and lectured and published widely on urbanism, and the relationship between science and the city. He is the co-founder of the Centre for the Spatial Realm, aiming to raise public awareness of urban space through science and art. In addition to his formal training, Arida has been extensively involved in various projects and productions, from public relations campaigns, corporate identity and environment branding, to application development, multimedia and film.
