The exchange association introduced in last month’s story about the children of Fukushima and America has continued to serve as a bright influence upon children. 先月号で紹介した福島とアメリカの子どもの交流会は、 その後も子どもたちに明るい影響を与えています。
T
his month’s story continues with Fukushima. After three and a half years, there’s a sense that the memories brought about by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, tsunami, and radiation disasters have slowly begun to fade. In reality, however, if one visits the affected areas, it is clear that emotions are much more complicated, and people remain mired in uncertainty and challenges. It’s almost as if time has stood still since the shock of March 11th, 2011. “How many years will it be until we can return to our former lives in the towns we originally lived in?” “What is the likelihood that we will develop terrible illnesses due to the effects of radiation as we grow older?” “When will we finally be able to give Father, who remains unaccounted for, a proper burial?” Children are agonizing over such issues, just as the adults are. Furthermore, these children have a tendency to become solitary and introverted at their new schools, and there are even reports of kids being bullied because they are “children from Fukushima.” Under these uncontrollable circumstances, what can be done so these children can hold hope in their hearts again? This was the central question for this visit to Fukushima. Yui Ouchi, a third-grader from Fukushima who participated in the exchange along with the middle and high school students from Irvine, posed a question to her father. “Why did they come all the way from America to Fukushima?” Once she learned about our objective, she replied, “It was so much fun playing games! I’m going to think of what I can do for other people too!” A change in her heart could already be seen. Several weeks later, upon hearing the news of the avalanche disaster in Hiroshima Prefecture brought about by the heavy rains,Yui vowed, “I have to do something to help the victims.” After discussion with her mother, she donated extra towels from home to help the relief efforts. The feelings that we had brought with our visit sparked hope in the hearts of these children, and grew further into consideration for others. Yui’s mother exclaimed with delight, “I received something precious as well,” and her joy lit up my heart as well.

月に引き続き福島のお話です。東日本大震災について、地 震、津波、放射能などの被害についての記憶は3年半とい う時間の経過とともに徐々に風化していく気配が感じられること もあります。ただ実際、被災地に行ってみると、未だに先が見えな いジレンマや不安感が心に陰を落としていたり、3月11日から時 間が止まったままのようなショックを持ち続けていたりと、人々の 気持ちは複雑です。 「あと何年で元々住んでいた村で以前の生活 に戻れるのか？」 「大人になって放射能の影響で恐ろしい病気にか からないだろうか？」 「 行方不明の父ちゃんはいつになったら埋葬 してあげられるだろうか」 というようなことは大人と同様、子どもた ちも考えています。 また、子どもたちの移転先の学校では孤立化し たり内向的になったりする傾向があり、”福島から来た子ども”とし ていじめに遭うケースも耳にしました。子どもたちだけではどうに もできないこの環境下、何をしたら明るい希望を心に抱かせてあ げることができるのかーー今回の福島訪問の第一の課題でした。 私と同行したアーバイン在住の中・高校生との交流会に参加した福 島の小学3年生、大内結衣さんは父親に疑問を投げかけました。 「な ぜ、 お兄ちゃんやお姉ちゃんがわざわざアメリカから福島に来てくれ たの？」 と。 そして私たちの目的を知ると 「楽しくゲームができてとって も楽しかった！ 私も人のために何ができるか考えることにする！」 と 言ってくれたのです。 心の変化は即、 行動に現れました。 数週間後、 広 島県で起こった豪雨による土石流災害のニュースを聞いた結衣さん は 「私が何かお手伝いをして被害を受けた人々を助けなくちゃ」 と言 い、 母親と相談して家で余っていたタオルを支援物資として送ったそ うです。 私たちが訪問して伝えた気持ちが子どもの心に小さな希望を もたらし、他人を思いやる心として芽吹いた瞬間でした。結衣さんの 母親は 「私も大切なものをもらいました」 と嬉しそうに話してくれ、私 の心まで明るくなりました。
