ABSTRACT Haridrā (Curcuma longa Linn.) is considered to be one of the most easily available important herbal drug used as a home remedy, since ancients days. Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia recommends both external and internal applications of Haridrā for the management of different disease conditions. This review portrays the wide usages of Haridrā through internal administration, being comprised from 9 Saṁhitā (treatise), 17 Cikitsā grantha (compendia of Ayurveda) and 30 Rasagrantha (compendia related to Rasaśāstra). It is observed that about 948 formulations, having Haridrā as an ingredient, are used to combat almost 110 varied diseases. Among these diseased conditions, maximum are indicated for the management of Kuṣṭha (disease of skin), followed by Prameha (increased frequency and turbidity of urine) and Jvara (fever) etc. In these formulations, its rhizome has been reported as the most common part used. Present data may encourage researchers to think over this easily available and non controversial drug in pharmaceutical and clinical research. KEYWORDS: Ayurveda, Curcuma longa, Curcumin, Haridrā, Niśā, turmeric

Ramprasad, 2003) have been compiled. Formulations containing Haridrā or its parts as an ingredient, were critically studied and recorded in a specially designed information sheet. Various Ayurvedic technical terms were presented with equivalent English terms by referring well accepted dictionaries (Monier M, Williams A, 1961). English equivalent of various disease conditions were referred from Ayurvedic Formulary of India (AFI) (Anonymous, 2003) and commonly used English equivalent of dosage forms were provided. Indications of Haridrā, on various diseases, were categorized according their srotasa of origin and were presented accordingly (Singh Ramharsha, 2004). Number of the dosage forms found are noted, in parenthesis, in chronological order. Number of formulations indicated for the management of various disease conditions are presented, in parenthesis, in a chronological order. Abbreviations of each
refered classical text was presented in parenthesis, in material and method section, and the same abbriviations were presented in references column, in result section. RESULTS On keen observation, it is noted that in 1622 formulations delineated in Saṁhitā, Saṅgraha and Rasagrantha, Haridrā has been found to be an ingredient. While critically analyzing these formulations, it is observed that 680 formulations are repeated in more than one text, in the same disease condition. After excluding these repeated formulations 942 formulations are found to contain Haridrā as an ingredient being used for internal administration. DOSAGE FORMS It is observed that Haridrā containing formulations are administered in 26 dosage forms (Table 1 to 10). Among the dosage forms of the formulations, maximum (267) are Cūrṇa (powder) followed by 191 in Kvātha (decoction), 132 in Ghṛta (medicated ghee), 129 in Vaṭi (pills), 53 in Avleha (confection), 28 in Taila (oil), 26 in Guṭikā (pills), 19 in Guggulu, 18 in Arisṭa (medicated spirituous liquid), 13 in Kṣāra (alkaline preparations), 13 in Agada, 11 in Āsava (medicated alcohol) and Arka, seven in Kalka (paste) and Vaṭaka, five in Kāñjī (sour gruel) and Svarasa (juice), four in Modaka (bolus), two in Mantha (rice gruel), Khaṇḍapāka, Yavāgu (gruel) and one each in Sandhāna kalpanā (fermented liquids), Takra (butter milk), Phāṇṭa (infusions), Hima (cold infusions), and Saktu (coarsely ground meal) dosage forms. Indications 1. Annavaha-Puriṣavaha Srotasa

DISCUSSION: According to Ayurveda srotas plays a key role in physiological function and pathophysiology of disease condition. Understanding the concept of srotāṁsi and srotovaiguṇya (deformity in srotas) facilitates the physician to take decisions accurately with respect to treatment and prognosis. According to Ayurveda, human body is made from various macro and micro channels which carries various metabolites and substances (Dhātu) in it, for nourishment and excretion, called as srotas. Srotas are divided according to the substances (Dhātu) which they carry in it according to Ayurveda (Verma Vandana, 2014). Acārya Caraka has described thirteen major gross srotamsi simulating the major physiological systems of the body. In addition to these gross
material channels another important channel is Manovaha srotasa which carries impulses of thoughts and emotions (Dash B and Sharma R K, 2000). Due to vitiation in their mechanism, various pathology develops and symptoms or disease occurs. According to Ayurveda, Haridrā possesses Kaṭu (pungent), Tikta (bitter) rasa (taste), Rukṣa (dryness) guṇa, Uṣṇa (hot) vīrya, Kaṭu (pungent) vipāka and Kapha-pitta śāmaka properties (K C Chunekar, 2013). It is evident from the formulations noted in various classical texts of Ayurveda that Haridrā, due to its properties, is used in the treatment of various disease condition like Prameha (increased frequency and turbidity of urine), Kuṣṭha (skin disorder), Jvara (fever), Viṣa (poison), Pāṇḍu (anemia), Vātavyādhi (disease due to Vāta doṣa), Udara (disease of abdomen), Vātarakta (gout), Kāsa (cough), Kāmalā (jaundice), Śotha

(inflammation), Grahaṇī (sprue), Rājayakṣmā (tuberculosis), Arśa (piles), Mukharoga (disease of mouth), Gulma (abdominal lump), Śvāsa (asthma), Atisāra (diarrhea), Apasmāra (epilepsy), Kṛmi (worm), Unmāda (psychosis), Plīhāroga (splenic disease), Śūla (colic pain) and many diseases mentioned above along with Rasayanā properties in different srotasa.
Uterine fibroids (Dhiman K, 2014), Acute Tonsilitis (Tiwari Ranjana, 2014), Abhisayanda (C. Srinivas, 1989), Madhumeha (DM Type 2) (Bharati Sarvesh Kumar, 2016), Anemia (Pandya M., 2015), Bronchitis (Vd. Aklesh, 2016) which substantiate the traditional use of Haridrā for combating various disorders.
In recent past, Haridrā (Curcuma longa L.) has been extensive, studied through various scientific parameters and have been reported for its pharmacology activity like, Anti diabetic activity (Olatunde, A., 2014), Anti inflammatory (Yegnanarayan, 1976), Hepatoprotactive activity (Salama Suzy, 2013), Wound healing (Purohit S.K, 2013), Anti fertility (Garg S.K., 1974), Anti cancer activity (Hashim Farah, 2013), Antimicrobial activity (Gupta Ankur, 2015), Anti oxidant activity (Sahu Rajani kanta, 2011) and clinical study like: Peptic ulcer (Prucksunand C, 2001),
Haridrā finds a wide range of therapeutic importance in 942 formulations being indicated for internal applications in almost 110 disease conditions. Haridrā is used in 26 dosage forms among which maximum 267 formulations are Cūrṇa followed by 191 in Kvātha, 132 in Ghṛta, 129 in Vaṭi. Formulations containing Haridrā are used to treat 110 diseases among which maximum are prameha, Kuṣṭha and Jvara. The present review may helps to plan more thorough experimental and clinical studies to suffice the validation of these internal uses of Haridrā.
