Put the cancer stick away

M

y father once told me “one is too many, a thousand never enough.” He was, of course, talking about the evils of smoking. Now, I don’t want to go off on a rant against smokers as everyone has his or her own vice – mine is eating, or maybe I should say, overeating – but for the life of me, I can never figure out why golfers would even contemplate smoking while on a course. There you are surrounded by beautiful Mother Nature, fresh air in abundance, tranquil lakes to calm your nerves, cool clouds passing by and birds and other cute furry animals to make you smile and yet, some golfers pollute the air by lighting up. What is even worse is that some puff away while on the greens. How disgusting is that? I know many are feeling the tension and pressure of trying to sink a putt due to a wager or two, but please, put the cancer stick away. The Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge has taken me to many clubs since the start of the year and I was certainly shocked when I first came across a smoker on the greens. At first I thought it was a rarity, but eventually, to my horror, it happened at almost every club I visited. Hopefully, clubs will act against these errant members before a careless flick of the wrist damages a course. Meanwhile, the Maybank Malaysian Open ended with yet another foreigner clinching victory. This time it was 18-year-old Noh Seung-yul, who stole the thunder with a brilliant birdie on the 18th to take home more than RM1 million in prize money. It was his second professional victory and before he is even out of his teens, Seung-yul has already achieved more than our seasoned professionals. Out of the 13 Malaysian golfers who started on Thursday, only two – M. Sasidaran and Danny Chia – survived the cut. Even then, they were never in contention for the title, finishing with a four-day total of three-over 291, 17 strokes behind Seung-yul. It is a crying shame that despite the added advantage of an unusually hot and humid weather, our boys fell by the wayside faster than James Cameron exiting the Kodak Theatre after ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow won the two biggest Oscar awards. Oh well, there’s always next year … as we have been saying for the last 49 years!

We love to hear from you As mentioned in our inaugural issue, MS3 Golf will look at ways to set ourselves apart from the rest of our competitors, who have established themselves as “must-reads”. It will take time but we are here for the long haul. We hope to strike a balance by running some humorous articles along with serious, hard core news and as you may have noticed, we are not just a golf magazine. We will dedicate three to four pages each month to other big sporting events happening in the country. We would also like to invite you to share some of your stories with us. Do tell us your best, worst, funniest or even most touching golfing tales. All emails should be sent to: gnunis@ms3golf.com.my or gnunis@gmail.com

The Big Interview with YB Datuk Youth and Sports Minister YB Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek took time out from his busy schedule to talk about golf, Sukan Malaysia and sports sponsorship. While he longs to see a Malaysian soaring up the world rankings, he will settle for a gold medal in next year’s SEA Games.

M

S3: How is your ministry supporting Sukan Malaysia XIII in Melaka?

YB Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek (SC): We are always supportive of each Sukan Malaysia hosts as we want the Games to run as smoothly as possible. A successful Sukan Malaysia is important to the nation and we will help Melaka in anyway possible be in by helping out on the technical side or getting enough officials to help out. We at the Ministry are delighted to say that Melaka have been actively promoting Sukan Malaysia

Malaysians must be thankful that unlike many other countries, where even the state or district sporting events are expensive affairs, Sukan Malaysia is free as we do not want to burden the Rakyat as we also use it to help develop sports.

They have made sure all aspects have been covered to make it the best ever Sukan Malaysia. They have even tried to accommodate every event even it they don’t benefit them. Their preparations are on course and future hosts can learn from them. MS3: How about funding for Sukan Malaysia? Are the Ministry supporting Melaka financially? SC: Most of the funding is handled Melaka. The National Sports Council (NSC) have given them RM1 million and we hope more corporate sponsors will step forward to help to pay for the Games as well.

time to be volunteers or helping out in other ways. MS3: Many states have lobbied for the inclusion of several new sports. What is your take on this? SC: Melaka have been very fair in this respect as they have agreed to allow several new sports (formula future, canoe, golf, 7s rugby, beach and indoor volleyball, kabaddi, judo, fencing and waterpolo), even though they are not that good in most of them. There were some sports which have been left out, not because Melaka didn’t want them but because there were not enough teams involved. As for golf, many questioned why it was left out in the first place as Melaka have many beautiful courses – I dare say among the most beautiful in the country. The Chief Minister himself was in favour of golf as Melaka is quite good in this sport. But he also agreed to the inclusion of sports such as beach volleyball and Formula Future, two events which Melaka are not known for as he wanted to be fair to everyone. MS3: How dependant is Sukan Malaysia on corporate sponsors? Do Melaka need them to make it a success?

Malaysians must be thankful that unlike many other countries, where even the state or district sporting events are expensive affairs, Sukan Malaysia is free as we do not want to burden the Rakyat as we also use it to help develop sports.

SC: Any sporting event needs corporate sponsors to be a success. Business must also realise how important sports can be to them. Helping to fund sporting events will make them more appreciated by the Rakyat as it shows they are willing to sacrifice some profits to organise healthy activities.

Even though its free, Malaysian can always contribute by donating their

will be all over the stadium – via billboards, A boards, buntings – and their name mentioned in news reports. Sport is one way to unite the country and it is not cheap to bring in world class fare to our Rakyat. The government can’t be burdening the tax payer and this is where the corporate sponsors can play a big role. MS3: There have been 12 previous Sukan Malaysia, do you think this is the best place to find future national athletes? SC: Sukan Malaysia is the best place to unearth new talent. While they are in school, the athletes have the MSSM programme but once they leave school, the only place for them to be spotted is at Sukan Malaysia. This is an important year as we have the Asian and Commonwealth Games while next year’s SEA Games is in the middle of the year, not at the end as it was in Laos. That means, we will only have one year after Sukan Malaysia XIII to prepare for it. We will certainly be on the lookout for new talent. MS3: Will the Ministry be sending more athletes for overseas training? Football for example. SC: Football is different as it is at a new stage after its tremendous result of winning a gold medal in Laos. There is renewed interest and we need to make sure the boys are exposed to top level competition or loaned to top clubs in Europe. This does not mean the Ministry will overlook the other sports. If there is an runner,

Golf has really taken off in the past 10 years. Before, we could never imagine people would sit in front of their television to watch a telecast for two, three, four days but now there is a dedicated golf channel. swimmer, jumper or any other athlete who shows the potential we will certainly encourage they be sent to overseas training.

billionaire would be a golfer? MS3: Datuk mentioned that we have 220 courses and great infrastructure in the country. So what are we lacking and where do we go from here?

MS3: What is your view golf in the country? SC: To me, Malaysia should already be in the forefront when it comes to golf as we have 220 courses around the country. That is more than Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines have, but unfortunately, none of our players are even ranked in the top 200.

SC: We have been left behind as there was no proper grassroots programmes for our players. There were many problems with the previous professional body which ran golf in the country. There was a lot of infighting in the association and as a results, the players’ welfare was neglected.

We have the infrastructure but our talent is not making use of it. China, Korea and Thailand are dominating the game in Asia while the Korean women are world beaters. Why not Malaysians? Do you know where are planeloads of Koreans who are using some of our country’s facilities as their academy? We are spectators in our own country. Golf has really taken off in the past 10 years. Before, we could never imagine people would sit in front of their television to watch a telecast for two, three, four days but now there is a dedicated golf channel. While before people wanted to watch action packed sports like football and boxing, golf now has a big following and the prize money is crazy. Who would have thought that the first sports

MS3: What are your thoughts on the new association (PGAM)?

This has been proven by our calendar where there is 13 events throughout the year, none offering less than RM100,000 in prize money. This is just the first stage and I’m confident it will get better in future.

SC: I believe we have sorted out many of the problems and got a consensus as to who should run the association. For the next three years, my Ministry will be keeping a close watch on the new association. We will help to fund some of their programmes and the warring factions have agreed to set aside their differences for the sake of the game. This has been proven by our calendar where there is 13 events throughout the year, none offering less than RM100,000 in prize money. This is just the first stage and I’m confident it will get better in future. Our professional can now earn a

good living and there are many big events coming up. The biggest of all is the PGA event which offers US$6 million in prize money. There is no cut-off, meaning even the lastplaced golfer can earn as much as US$50,000. There will be at least one Malaysian in the maindraw MS3: What is your view on the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge? SC: I applaud the organisers of the event as it gives everyone a chance to showcase their talent. It certainly is a good programme for amateurs while the exposure for Sukan Malaysia is tremendous. Hopefully the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) can find some new stars from this tournament. We really need to start making our mark internationally, especially as golf will be back in the Olympics from 2016.Golf is not a contact sport. We don’t need to be taller than our opponent or physically stronger. Asian players have shown they can compete at a high level and I wish to see a Malaysia among the world’s elite. That, unfortunately, won’t happen overnight so my immediate target is to for us to win at least one gold medal in next year’s SEA Games. This is not an impossible target as our women won two bronze medals last year.

Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, the Chief Minister of Melaka launched the ‘Larian Baton Sukan Malaysia XIII, Melaka 2010’ to a rapturous welcome. Melaka will host their first-ever Sukan Malaysia this year from June 10-19. In a rousing speech, Dato Seri Mohd Ali said that there were only 102 days left to the start of the Sukan Malaysia XIII and the people of Melaka should get into the Sukan Malaysia mood as they might not have the chance to see it being hosts again for a long time. “Sports is one of the 13 promotional product of the state and with this being the first that Melaka is playing hosts to the biggest sporting event in the country, Melaka should set the standard in supporting the games,” said Datuk Seri Mohd Ali. “I’ve already instructed the promotions committee to double their efforts in promoting the games which will see a total of 33 sports being competed. “I hope that the various agencies – government on non-governmental – will get into the spirit of the Sukan Malaysia so that out athletes can also be successful in the medal

Radzi Shaari, the chief executive officer of Sukan Malaysia 2010, said that with the Melaka edition set to be the biggest ever, all preparations are geared towards the maximum possible. “There are Thirty three WAITING FOR THE START: Radzi confident Melaka will host sports will be competed in the best ever Sukan Malaysia Melaka. We do not expect it to be perfect, but we will try hard to come close,” he added. “And so as to avoid any controversies, we have also decided to appoint the Chief National Technical Delegates for all sports from outside the state of Melaka. This will ensure fairness in all the decision making in as far as the technical aspect of the games is concerned.”

Roselina’s magic formula

M

elaka State Sports Council director Roselina Idrus has been involved in sports for more than two decades but still gets a big thrill from seeing her charges climbing onto the top of the podium. Formerly with the Selangor and Federal Territories Sports Councils, Roselina has experienced many highs and lows in her time, but said helping Melaka finish among the leaders in this year’s Sukan Malaysia XIII could well be her biggest achievement. “It is not going to be easy as Melaka failed to win a single gold medal at the last Sukan Malaysian in Terengganu two years ago,” said the mother of seven, who was at the helm when Selangor ruled the Sukan Malaysia many years ago and who also helped transform the Federal Territories into a sporting powerhouse, “I was roped in after the Terengganu Games to help lift the standards of the Melaka athletes. I have tasted success with both Selangor and Federal Territories, but would consider it my biggest achievement if Melaka can finish among the top five states this year.

Roselina: “Being hosts also means extra pressure, but I believe the Rakyat will get behind us and give us a big boost as we challenge to bring glory to the state.”

“I can’t guarantee we will finish top of the pile but I am confident we will win some gold medals. This is no empty boast. Our athletes have been training very hard for the last 18 months and I believe we are ready for the challenge.” She explained that most of the Melaka athletes have been training together since November 2008 while many more are training with the various national teams. Also, as part of the state’s preparations, several foreign coaches were hired. Roselina added Melaka are also focusing on sports which offer multiple medals such as swimming, wushu, silat, archery, shooting and athletes. “Many of our athletes have been picked for national duty and so are away training with the various teams but we have not neglected those at home a we have been training for close to 18 months,” said Roselina, who said the foreign coaches have been assigned to sports such as wushu, weight lifting, table tennis, gymnastics and swimming. “Being hosts also means extra pressure, but I believe the Rakyat will get behind us and give us a big boost as we challenge to bring glory

to the state.” She added the state government have been very supportive of her programmes as they, too, want to see their athletes collect gold medals. In addition, the state government have approved several trips overseas where the athletes were exposed to rigorous training while some went to compete in high level tournaments. On the decision to include formula future, canoe, golf, 7s rugby, volleyball (beach and indoor), kabaddi, judo, fencing and waterpolo into Sukan Malaysia late last year, Roselina said, she is taking it all in her stride. The added sports means 33 sports will be contested in Melaka. “Although we are not good in some of the newly included sports, water polo is the exception. Melaka have won gold in three MSSM championships and I’m sure this experience will help us in June,” she said. “At the end of the day, my job is to prepare the athletes to the best of my ability. And if we can win some gold medals along the way, I can sleep easy.” With her proven track record, we are sure Melaka will prosper.

Hosts going all out to win most valuable gold medal Melaka have placed special emphasis on football to deliver the most sought-after gold medal at the Sukan Malaysia XIII which they will be playing hosts to for the first time ever this June. The historical state will entertain close to 11,000 athletes and officials in Malaysia’s biggest biennial games from June 10-19. Melaka State Sports Council director Roselina Idrus said that winning gold in football has always been regarded as the ultimate prize at the Sukan Malaysia, so it is no surprise that Melaka have decided to tread along the same lines. “There is no argument that football is a popular sport in the country and following Malaysia’s performance at the SEA Games last year, there has been renewed interest in the game – it is the same with Melaka,” said Roselina. “And it is because of that we have decided to give special emphasis on football where their focus this year is to win the gold for the first time ever at the Sukan Malaysia. “Since last year, the players have been training together quite regularly. This season; they have been divided between the President’s Cup team and also the Melaka team playing in the Premier League. “We have faith in the players and the team that we are moulding that they will be able to play at a high level and win the gold at the Main Stadium of the Hang Jebat which will give tremendous pride to the state.” The Melaka squad, which is made up of players under the age of 23, is under the guidance of Rahim Abdullah and Mahazir Taha. In the meantime, Roselina added that Melaka will organise centralised motivational camp in batches as the Sukan Malaysia approaches. “It is hard to have all the athletes together for the camp at the same time. So we will break them up into batches between those with similar discipline like contact sports and so on,” she added.

SHORT TAKES Sarawak ready to roar again

Sarawak’s Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom said he believes the state can make the Sukan Malaysia XIII a glorious one. “I believe in the state contingent and put a lot of hopes in them to achieve their goal of becoming champions once again,” he told the Borneo Post recently. The state will take part in tenpin bowling, petanque, shooting, taekwondo, silat, basketball, football, swimming, artistic gymnastic, gymrama, cycling, badminton, lawn bowls, archery, ping-pong, boxing, wushu, athletics, weightlifting and sepak takraw with 392 athletes, who will be accompanied by 115 officials. Mawan said Sarawak have the best sports development management system in the country and as such, is confident the east Malaysians can top the medal tally in June, despite not being able to six top athletes. The six – Bryan Nickson Lomas (diving), Pandelela Rinong (diving), Daniel Bego (swimming (pix), Diana Bong (wushu), Loh Jack Chang (wushu) and Mohd Jironi Riduan (athletics) – as they have already represented the country at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Sabah hold trials for off-roaders

Sabah Cycling Association have identified their off-road riders to compete in the Melaka Sukan Malaysia cross country and downhill events. Seasoned riders Jr Stanly and Nicklos Minol will lead the charge in the men events together with Jeoffrey Jerry Jemie, Laurel Lauridsen Adrian and Raijesh Ryner Anang while the women team will be spearheaded by Laura Avila Adrian followed by Lauretta Eva Adrian, Noor Azian Maslin Sazali, Natashya Soon and Brittney Adlynne R Anang. “We are optimistic that with the results shown during this trial, we have identified the bests and will now concentrate on the development of the athletes,” said chief coach Raijas Anang. “Niklos was the silver medallist in Cross Country event in Terengganu two years ago while Jeoffrey won the bronze for Malaysia in the Junior Cross Country event at the Asian Mountain Bike Championship 2009.” Another time trial for the road events will be held next month.

Penang share their expertise with other states

T

he term ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ best describes the junior kata (karate’s non-combat discipline) exponents who are currently training in Penang. Originally the Goshin-Ryu dojo (training centre) for Penang’s karate exponents, the centre at the Argyll Road in Georgetown, Penang is now the thriving heartbeat for kata in Malaysia. Besides the national kata squad who train there, it is also a National Sports Council recognised high performance training centre for budding kata exponents since 2008. These youngsters are being groomed to carry the nation’s challenge at the 2011 World Junior Karate Championships, which may be hosted by Melaka. Penang have dominated the domestic kata scene at senior and junior levels. They swept all the four gold medals at stake in the discipline at the last Sukma Games in Terengganu 2008. Seven out of the eight kata exponents who represented Malaysia at the recent SEA Games in Laos are Penangites, the exception being Sabahan Ricky Leong. Thus, it is not a surprise that the other states are looking to Penang to help lift the standard of their exponents. National kata chief coach Lim Chee Jin, who also oversees the development training programme, welcomed the influx of trainees from the other states. “The arrival of the young exponents from the other states to train here should not be misconstrued as a threat to Penang’s supremacy. I prefer to look at it positively. “By raising the overall standard of the Malaysian athletes, the quality of the competition also increases. If the Penang exponents wish to remain dominant, then they have no choice but to work doublly hard to stay ahead. “It benefits the sport as a whole in the long term, in particular the increase in the number of quality talents available for national assignments,” said Chee Jin. “It is not healthy for the sport for only one or two states to dominate. Eventually, those who have no chance of winning will

be driven away as they would find it difficult to secure funding. It is good to have a larger pool of talents from more states and we are happy to help mould them into champions.” Four gold medals would be at stake in kata in the Melaka – the Under-23 men’s and women’s individual and team events. The 2009 Asian Championships and SEA Games individual silver medallist Tan Chee Sheng of Penang will be the favourite to defend his individual and team kata gold medals. But the Penangites are expected to face stiff competition from the likes of Sabah, Pahang and Johor. Pahang exponent Emmanuel Leong, who settled for the individual silver medal in Terengganu after losing to Chee Sheng in the final, is excited about training with the best kata exponents in Malaysia. “Penang is the place to be as the state have constantly produced top talents for the national team. Karate is my passion and I hope to make full use of the facilities and expertise at the high performance centre to break into the national senior squad. “My short term goal is to go one step better than my silver medal finish in Terengganu. It will be a tall order to upstage Chee Sheng, but I am willing to give my best shot,”said the 18-year-old Kuantan lad. Mohd Azuhan Syah was a former junior level champion in kumite (combat), but made the decision to follow in the footsteps of his fellow Sabahan Ricky Leong in switching to kata. Chun Jin Wee, a female exponent from Segamat, Johor, is looking forward to producing a good show in Melaka. “It is important to put on a good show in Melaka not just to help our respective states, but also to earn boasting rights among our peers during training,” said the 18-year-old Jin Wee. The training and accommodation expenses for the exponents based in Penang are borne by the National Sports Council. Among the coaches who train the juniors at the centre in Penang are the country’s current top-ranked kata exponents Lim Lee Lee and Ku Jin Keat.

Johor confident of ending jinx BY RIZAL ABDULLAH

T

he number 13 is taboo to many, but Johor are hoping this mystical number will end their gold drought in Sukan Malaysia golf when the 13th edition of the biennial national games are held in Melaka from June 10-19. “Johor have never won a golf medal in the national games. This time around things do look good and I am confident that we will end our drought in Melaka,” said Johor Golf Association (JGA) secretary Majid Manjit Abdullah, who is also the team manager. Majid’s confidence stems from the fact the state have two of the most promising young golfers in the country – Kelly Tan and Abel Tam. The 16-year-old Kelly, who hails from Batu Pahat is on a hot streak and became the first Malaysian female to win the 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open girls’ overall title in August last year. In December, Kelly walked away with the individual bronze in Vientiane at the Laos Sea Games, apart from playing a significant role in helping Malaysia clinch the team bronze. Johor Baru lad Abel is the reigning National Junior match-play champion. The Johor golfers have been in training since January at the Royal Johor Country Club in Johor Bahru. The RJCC course is very similar to the Ayer Keroh Country Club (AKCC), the venue for the Sukan Malaysia golf competition. However, Johor are leaving no stones unturned in their bid to break the jinx. And to ensure that the players will be “ready to face the challenge” in Melaka, the Johor golfers have been attending several training camps at AKCC. “This is to make sure that our golfers get used to the AKCC course by the time the Games are held. We are not alone in this aspect. Kedah have also been sending their golfers there for the same reasons,” said Majid, who is also the general manager of RJCC. “The Ayer Keroh course has many similarities to RJCC. The courses are matured and the terrain similar with cow grass fairways. “My target is to win at least one gold. We have wasted no

effort to win at least one gold. All the players selected for Sukan Malaysia are products of our junior program.” Majid was referring to the JGA’s junior program set up five years ago with the cooperation of the Johor Sports Council. “Abel is the best bet for the boys’ individual gold while Kelly carries our hope in the girls’. Winning more than one gold medal is within our reach but we would rather set a low target so as not to put the pressure on the players. He is a consistent player who can par golf, depending on the course.” Abel, however, is likely to face stiff competition from Gavin Kyle Green, the reigning 100PLUS Malaysian Junior Open champion. Johor had set a high target at the last Sukan Malaysia in Terengganu in 2008 but their main hope Haziq Hamizan blew up against players like Akhmal Tarmizi who is now a professional golfer.

FT athletes to train abroad The Federal Territories Sports Council will send athletes abroad for training in preparation for the June 10-19 Sukan Malaysia in Melaka. Sports director Mohd Noor Azman Taib said at the moment, swimmers were training in Britain while track and field athletes would be off to China soon. He said other teams wanting to send their athletes for training could contact the council for consideration. Mohd Noor said the training would ensure that the contingent, comprising athletes from Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, would be able to achieve its target of finishing at least third among 15 competing teams. He added that the council would look at the athletes’ potential to win medals before sending them for training overseas. The team finished fifth in the Terengganu Games two years ago. Meanwhile, the Federal Territories (FT) Amateur Athletic Association (FTAAA) will use two upcoming championships in April and May to select their athletes for Sukan Malaysia. Athletics manager, Shamsul Bani Abdullah, said the two championships were the Federal Territories School Sports Council Championship in mid-April and the Federal Territories Athletics Open on May 29-30. “Both events will be held at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Some 50 FT athletes will be competing in both events,” he told reporters recently. He also said that the FT Sukan Malaysia, comprising athletes from Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, hope to win up to eight gold medals in June. In the 12th Sukma in Terengganu in 2008, athletics contributed two gold, seven silver and 10 bronze. He said athletes chosen for the biennial event would undergo a week of intensive training in May before heading to Malacca.

Lightning does strike twice JUST AS GOOD SECOND TIME ROUND: Chan Soo Keong with his prize

C

han Soo Keong does not believe in the term lightning strikes twice but the 42-year-old businessman from Kedah had to grudgingly make an exception after bagging his second Sukan Malaysia XIII 2010 Melaka Golf Challenge win in as many months. On both occasions, he hit identical gross scores of one-over 73 in two different courses to clinch a ‘double’ qualification ticket to the semi-finals. He won his first Sukan Malaysia Challenge at the Cinta Sayang Golf and Country Club in Sungai Petani January, and followed it up the following month with another winning performance at the Permaipura Golf and country Resort in Bedong. “Does this mean I am allowed to play two rounds in the finals?,” asked Soo Keong cheekily. “I had aimed to be among the top five, but never imagined that I would win in both tournaments, and by the same scores too.” At the Permaipura course, Chan finished three strokes ahead of Mohamad Noorhakimi, with Mohamad Shukri a further stroke behind. “I’m a member of Cinta Sayang and Permaipura and enjoy playing socially at both courses.” “While Cinta Sayang is more upmarket and closer to the city, Permaipura has its advantages for its remote and tranquil location,” said the golfer. He is now looking forward to putting on a good show in the semi-finals to gain a spot in the Sukan Malaysia Grand Final in Melaka .“I am confident of making the grand finals as I have been putting consistently regardless of the course or greens conditions. Who knows, I might post another 73 in the semi-finals to make it to the final,” quipped Soo Keong.

A great way

to promote Sukan Malaysia

T

he Sukan Malaysian XIII secretariat were thinking of many innovative ways to help raise awareness and promotion of the Games. They realised the need to promote the Games to the masses and the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge was seen as the perfect platform to do so and was the first step of the secretariat’s promotion campaign. After months of planning, the tournament involving 60 golf clubs from 14 states, and one from Brunei, teed off in January with more than 2,800 amateur golfers. In the month of February, another 2,300 golfers competed for a place in the second round. The second round teed off in March while the semifinals will be held in Kedah, Johor, Terengganu, Selangor and Sabah from April to May. The Grand Final will be held just before the Official Opening of the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka on June 10, 2010. The total number of participation is expected to be 12,000, which should earn the tournament a place in the Malaysian Book of Record as the golf tournament with the most participants. The semi-finalist will receive a special limited shoe bag and 8’ Golf Stand Bag as part of their goodies. They will also receive one night full accommodation as golfers will have to play their semi-finals away from home. Prizes will be given to the top 10 gross and top 10 nett scores. The top 12 Gross and 12 Nett from each of the five semi-finals will qualify to the Grand Final where there will also be a lucky

draw with many attractive prizes. Among the goodies the finalists can expect are a limited edition 10’ Golf Bag, Adidas/Taylor Made T-shirt, Taylor Made Cap and Taylor Made Ball Marker. Full accommodation will be provided for the finalists and the top 15 gross and 15 nett scores will earn attractive prizes with the winners earning the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge Silver Claret trophy. Once again, there will be a lucky draw with many attractive prizes. “The clubs with the most number of participants since the event started are Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (Kuala Lumpur), Kota Permai Golf & Country Club (Selangor), Monterez Golf & Country Club (Selangor), Bukit Jawi Golf Resort (Penang), Kelantan Golf Club (Kelantan), The Legend Golf & Country Resort (Johor), Batu Pahat Golf Club (Johor), Tawau Golf Club (Sabah),Keningau Golf Club (Sabah)” said Terence Lee, Chief Operating Officer of MS3 Golf Sdn Bhd, the organisers of the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge. “We are using the clubs’ monthly medal tournaments as our qualifying rounds and this has benefited the clubs. Previously, many clubs had complained their members were not too interested in participating in the Monthly Medal events. “However, since we incorporated Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge into their Monthly Medal. We have seen an increase in the number of members taking part in the Monthly Medal.” Meanwhile, MS3 Golf Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Nor Afendi Mohd Razlan said: “We are grateful to the support from the clubs who have hosted the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge and we hope they will continue to support all our events in future. Our aim is to help make the Monthly Medal event a competition worth entering and to give the amateurs an avenue to test their skills against their fellow golfers.”

BIG DREAMS: Fadli hopes to don national colours

Copper Fadli eyes the big time Mohd Fadli Ramlan is a full time policeman with a penchant for golf but if it were up to him, he would be on the course seven days a week, playing to earn a living. The 27-year-old, who used to be a caddy in his younger days, has always dreamt of becoming a professional golfer, but a lack of opportunity derailed his promising career. “When I was younger, all I thought of was becoming a professional golf player. It was what I strived for,” said Fadli, who grew up in Bukit Jawa. “When I was younger I became a caddy just so I could be around the golf course and it was among my happiest memories. I played in a few district level competitions but unfortunately, never made the grade. But my love for the game has never diminished.” Fadli will, however, experience what it likes to play in a big tournament as he has already qualified for the second round of the Sukan Malaysia XIII Melaka 2010 Golf Challenge. The tournament, which is Malaysia’s biggest golf competition with participation from 60 golf clubs from all over country and one from Brunei, teed off in January when the first round of qualifiers were held alongside a club’s monthly medal event The second round is now underway while the semi-finals will be held at five different locations in April and May. The Grand Final is in Melaka in June. “I’m excited about this tournament as it gives me an opportunity to challenge not only my peers from this club (Bukit Unggul Country Club) but also to take on the best from the clubs should I reach the semi-finals and eventually the Grand Final in Melaka,” he said. “Who knows, I might be spotted by the national coaches and be given a chance to attend national training,” said the lance corporal. “That will certainly be a dream come true.”

The first lady of Bukit Unggul “T

here are some things a woman can do better than a man,” so said Bukit Unggul Country Club’s golf manager May Wong as we sat down for this interview. It was a reply to the question, how does it feel to be a woman in what is traditional seen as a man’s world? It may sound sexist but when one thinks of golf in Malaysia, women aren’t normally expected to hold pivotal positions. Most

men think of women as eye candy, the ones they would eagerly choose as caddies. – a pleasant distraction after missing an easy putt! May, who certainly has the looks – she showed up for the interview dressed in a grey dress with matching shoes, manicured hands, not a hair out of place and a big beaming smile – is eager to show she also has the brains to disprove the notion that a

woman can’t survive at the top level in a golf club. “Yes it is true there are not many women in my position. I consider myself lucky to be handed the responsibility and will give my best to show I deserve it,” said May, who hails from Georgetown. “I have been with this club since 2001 but never expected this promotion. Hole No. 1 Meter: 330 Par: 4 A 330m par 4, gives the player the option of playing short of, or attempting to carry, a stream bed which crosses the fairway. The reward for successfully negotiating this task is a shorter approach to a green flanked by both water and hollows. The punishment for failure is most probably a bogey, or even a double bogey if the second shot finds the adjacent lake.

Hole No. 10 Meter: 495 Par: 5 The opening hole at Bukit Unggul is a 495m dogleg left par 5. The tee shot plays dramatically downhill to a landing area granted on the left by a hollow bunker. The rolling fairway leads to a green located amongst dense vegetation and protected on the right by grassy hollow. The design of this hole is intended to facilitate a fast start. Hole no. 1

Hole No. 2 Meter: 150 Par: 3 Three bunkers front the green at hole #2, par 3 which measures 150m. To reach the left portion of putting surface, a forced carry over sand is necessary. However, for those who favour the bump and run, an opening has been left to access the right side of the green

I have been with this club since 2001 but never expected this promotion. My last post was Sales and Marketing Manager and it is a big step up for me. I have always given 100% in everything I do and perhaps that is one of the reasons the management asked me to take up this new position. big step up for me. I have always given 100% in everything I do and perhaps that is one of the reasons the management asked me to take up this new position. “Now that I have been entrusted with the responsibilities, I will go all out to show just what I’m capable of. My immediate target is to organise the Bukit Unggul Open. The last time we organised the Open was three years ago and I think the time is right to bring it

Hole No. 3 Meter: 445 Par: 5 Although the par 5 hole #3 is uphill and plays slightly longer than the official 445m, birdie is a realistic possibility. The tee shot must avoid a large lake on the right to permit a bold second shot over a nest of cavernous bunkers. If both these shots are successfully negotiated, eagle and birdie chances await. Hole No. 4 Meter: 365 Par: 4 A downhill drive provides an elegant beginning to this 365m par 4. From the tee, the player may attempt to fly a large expanse of sand strategically located at the corner of this dogleg right. The remaining downhill approach must avoid a bunker to successfully reach the putting surface. Left and right of fairway is out of bound. Hole No. 5 Meter: 270 Par: 4 Although hole #5 is the shortest par 4 on the course at 270m, it may also be the most interesting. From the tee, the gambling player may elect to drive the green through a narrow opening between fairway and greenside bunkers and the lake. Scores on this hole will range from birdie, and perhaps eagle, to bogey and worse. Right side of fairway is out of bound.

27

Hole No. 11 Meter: 405 Par: 4 Hole #11 is a 405m par 4 which plays through Hole no. 11 a jungle valley. Grass hollows dot the left side of the fairway and series of decks and ridges lead to the green. The putting surface is undulating and bunker awaits hooked approach shots on the left. Par is an excellent score on this hole. Hole No. 12 Meter: 335 Par: 4 Despite measuring only 335m, the par 4 hole #12 is an excellent test of golf. The fairway is perched on a ridge and both jungle and bunkers await errant shots. The green is flanked by pot bunkers on both sides, demanding a precise iron approach shot. Hole No. 13 Meter: 340 Par: 4 The 340m par 4 hole #13 doglegs to the left around the natural slope of the land. Mounding and hollows keep the golfer from cutting the corner, and a stream which fronts the right hand portion of the green meanders the length of the hole and crowds the tee shot’s landing area. Accuracy is the key to scoring well on this hole. Hole no. 13

Hole No. 14 Meter: 120 Par: 3 Hole #14 is a 120m par 3 which can be played in several fashions. With the pin in the front left portion of the green, alignment is the most important element of the golfer’s shot, as the extremely narrow target is paralleled by a creek. The right side pin position creates an entirely different shot which features a forced carry over the water. Hole no. 5

Hole No. 6 Meter: 366 Par: 4 Hole #6 is a difficult, moderate length (366m) par 4, which parallels water for its entire length. A lobe of fairway protrudes into the lake and the daring player may try to attain this alternate landing area. However, a carry of approximately 225m is needed to reach it safely. The undulating green is bordered by water and intricately contoured hollows, providing a fitting conclusion to this challenging hole. Hole No. 7 Meter: 168 Par: 3 Five tees help provide variety on this 168m par 3. A lone bunker protects the left side of the green and creates an extremely difficult pin position in the back left portion of the putting surface. Hole No. 8 Meter: 375 Par: 4 An optional landing area is provided on this 375m par 4 to create excitement and interest. If the player endevours to carry a subtantial distance over a series of bunkers, the reward is an open approach to a green located significantly uphill. For those who take the safe route, serpentine greenside traps are forcefully in play. Hole No. 9 Meter: 355 Par: 4 The 355m par 4 finishing hole is designed as a stern test of a player’s ability. An ominous bunker punctuates the left side of the fairway. The thinking Hole no. 9 golfer will want to place his tee shot close to this trap to help avoid a rugged bunker located to the right of the green. Ths putting surface is boldly undulated to ensure challenge through the final putt. Left side of fairway is out of bound.

Hole No. 15 Meter: 470 Par: 5 The tee shot on this 470m par 5 sets up the play for the remainder of the hole. A well-placed shot will allow the player to attempt to reach the green in two. A poor tee shot will force a lay-up and a treacherous pitch to an elongated green fronted by two pot bunkers. A beautiful waterfall awaits a bad hook on the left side of the green.

Hole no. 15

Hole No. 16 Meter: 329 Par: 4 Hole #16, a 329m par 4, features a complex of bunkers and a stream to create challenge. Sand and water narrow the landing area and the same elements protect the right side of the green. The conservative player will favour the left portion of this putting surface. Hole No. 17 Meter: 160 Par: 3 The 160m par 3 hole #17 requires a well struck mid-iron to reach the relative safety of the putting surface. A massive bunker stretches from the green back toward the tees and adds a significant intimidation factor to this hole. To play well here, the golfer must be in control of his emotions as well as his game. Hole No. 18 Meter: 380 Par: 4 A strong 380m par 4 returns to The Clubhouse. The corner of this dogleg right is guarded by an irregularly-shaped bunker which directs play to the left side of the fairway. From this angle, it is an uphill shot to a very tricky green. A par is an excellent score for this hole.

Kedah’s well kept secret

I

t is not easy keeping up with Mohamad Sukairi for this interview. The 50-year-old Permaipura Golf and Country Club golf operations manager was too busy to stay in one spot, resulting in this interview taking place in various locations around the club, including places like the clubhouse lobby, the administration office, restaurant and his office. In between ensuring the Sukan Malaysia XIII 2010 Melaka Golf Challenge competition went smoothly, checking on the lunch for the golfers, getting the prizes and the sound system ready, entertaining club members, completing paperwork in his office and giving away the prizes to the winners, the man still had time to sneak in a round of 18-holes. “So sorry to make you run around the place with me and to keep you waiting. The girls in the admin office didn’t come to work because it’s Sunday and I have to take care of everything here today,” he said apologetically. Sukairi’s hands-on approach in doing the nitty-gritty stuff himself best describes the distinctiveness of

Permaipura GCC. Tagged as a club that offers all golfing amenities without the unnecessary frills that serve to promote exorbitant membership fees, Permaipura retains the personal touch that make members feel they are part of the family. Access to the club is via a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ off road from the busy trunk road linking the towns of Sungai Petani and Bedong in Kedah.

If coming on the North-South Expressway, one should take the Sungai Petani Northern exit and head north about 5km towards Gurun. “Permaipura is like a well kept secret because it caters to a select local niche who prefer the quiet and solitude. At this club, we focus on providing a personal touch to the members. Our members love coming here because we are more service oriented than product focused,” he said. “If you noticed, there are not many other facilities here like swimming pool or other recreational activities. This place is strictly for golfing. Permaipura is a bit low profile when compared to the bigger golf clubs in the Sungai Petani vicinity like Cinta Sayang and Harvard. “We like to think of the club as complementing the big boys by providing an alternative course to a smaller number of members, who are mostly local Kedahans,” added Sukairi. The 50-year-old considers Permaipura his home now, and has spent the last 10 years as the club’s

DESCRIPTIONS OF PGCC’S 18 HOLES Hole #1 Par-4 Index-7 Blue-347m White-330m Red-309m A scenic view of your first round with majestic Gunung Jerai as the backdrop. Long hitters may try the tiger line to lift the ball past the water on the left beyond the drain that cuts the fairway. If not, it’s two easy shots to the green. Be careful however of the approach as bunkers guard the front and rear. Hole #2 Par-4 Index-5 Blue-356m White-335m Red-296m An elevated tee to a fairway that doglegs slightly to the right awaits your play off. Errant hits could land in watery graves on both sides of the fairway. Manage your tee shot past the fairway bunker and you should play regulation two-on. Hole #3 Par-3 Index-17 Blue-159m White-141m Red-120m This green slopes from back to front. With a bunker guarding the front right of the green, it’s fairly difficult Par 3 depending on the pin placement. Hole #4 Par-4 Index-15 Blue-300m White-282m Red-254m Hitting straight, the average player should discover the green in two. The long hitter, however, takes a risk, as the tee shot will not only have to negotiate two bunkers but also a drain crossing the fairway. Hole #5 Par-5 Index-3 Blue-450m White-427m Red-386m A fairly accurate drive should easily carry the drain traversing the fairway. Another good second shot and you will be close to the apron for the pitch-on. A lone bunker guards the left front of the green. By all counts, a Par 5 to score on. Hole #6 Par-3 Index-9 Blue-154m White-148m Red-124m A medium iron and you should reach the green. Take extra care as a fade or a draw played pin-high into the green could end up in the sand on either side of the green. Hole #7 Par-5 Index-1 Blue-465m White-445m Red-393m The signature hole of Permaipura characterized by a big tree situated approximately 70 meters slightly right of center. Here, a slight fade on tee off will do. A straight second shot from a short iron and you’re into the green. The contoured green will test your putting skills. Hole #8 Par-4 Index-13 Blue-308m White-287m Red-265m To the left, slightly dogleg. A straight, moderate drive should set you up for the approach to the green. Be careful on the tee shot as a hook or slice will be severely penalized. Hole #9 Par-4 Index-11 Blue-346m White-320m Red-273m A dogleg right. Cutting corners with your drive could land the ball in the pond to the right of the fairway. More errant hit and the ball is in the second pond guarding the green. From the middle of the fairway, it’s only middle to short iron into the green. Hole #10 Par-4 Index-6 Blue-357m White-339m Red-316m A straightforward drive and you’re in an ideal position short of the drain that crosses the fairway. Take heed of the bunkers on the right and left flanks with mid to short iron approach. There’s potential for a birdie hole here. Hole #11 Par-4 Index-4 Blue-278m White-254m Red-236m It’s a scoring spree for long hitters at this intriguing hole. High handicappers however could face a watery end if they try to cut the corner. The fairway here is narrow and treads dogleg right to a tricky green. Hole #12 Par-4 Index-8 Blue-304m White-279m Red-257m Here, it doglegs right with OB on the right. Attempts to take the tiger line on the right may result in close encounters with fairway bunkers. An accurate drive in the middle and mid to short iron should take you to the green in regulation. Two bunkers guard both sides of the green. Hole #13 Par-3 Index-14 Blue-148m White-127m Red-118m It’s an easy par 3 within a spacious green. Two bunkers play custodians on either side of the green. Hole #14 Par-4 Index-18 Blue-310m White-291m Red-273m The average player should score well here. Long hitters however, need to be gentle with their shots to avoid hitting the slope leading to the pond on the right. Be cautious of the fairway bunker on the left.

annually hosted a leg of the Genting Masters series. Since the tournament was stopped several years ago, the 18-hole 160 acre course has not been on the radar for national-level tournaments. At present, the jungle surrounding the golf course is being turned into a housing area by Asiatic Development. The massive development project involves building single and double storey terrace houses which are all fully booked, and bungalow plots right by the golf course. Sukairi said: “We are targeting club members and those who want to build dream retirement homes to take up the bungalow plots. There is no better way to display their passion for Permaipura than by living right beside the course.”

Hole #15 Par-3 Index-16 Blue-150m White-132m Red-120m With a medium to short iron, a good tee-off should easily reach the green. A number of bunkers stand guard over the green. Hole #16 Par-5 Index-2 Blue-448m White-423m Red-396m Extremely short par 5. Big hitters will have an excellent opportunity to go for two-on, even try their luck for an eagle. A good drive is enough to carry the sand trap on the fairway. Slicing your drive or hooking your second shot is disastrous here as watery nightmares abound. Strive for accuracy, not power. Hole #17 Par-4 Index-10 Blue-332m White-316m Red-300m A straight shot down the fairway and a medium to short iron should see you safely on the green in regulation. Hole #18 Par-5 Index-12 Blue-454m White-433m Red-412m A unique challenge is the climax to the finale of your game here. Running alongside the fairway on the right is a stream that also intersects at the turn. The 90 degree dogleg right fairway favors big hitters. Some players may have difficulty making gains on the Bermuda Tifdwarf greens if the pins a placed to the back.

MGA determined to end Buaya menace Former golfing great Bobby Nichols once said “Nothing goes down slower than a golfers’ handicap” and this is especially true in Malaysia where “Buaya” or sandbaggers, have long dominated the lucrative amateur tournaments in the country. In an attempt to curb this menace, the MGA have announced the establishment of the “Golf Clubs” under the purview of the National Handicapping System (NHS), USGA Handicap and Slope Rating which will be headed by Captain William van Geyzel The Golf Clubs offer proper handicapping for homeless golfers (golfers who are not a member of any golf clubs affiliated to MGA). Under this scheme, these golfers are now able to get the NHS Card at a fee of RM120.00 per annum (it is free for junior members registered with MGA). The MGA National Handicap System (NHS) will centrally process the USGA Handicaps for all of its members. Members must acquire a Proficiency Certificate from a Golf Professional or from any member of the MGA Committee or NHS subcommittee members. They also need to attend a golf seminar, conducted by MGA appointed members before

a handicap card is issued. Captain van Geyzel said: “The system makes it easier to monitor golfers’ handicap. For just RM10 per month, members will get their handicap maintained and adjusted legally. They will also be able to monitor their handicap via their own computer through the association’s website at www.mgaonline.com or from their own club as MGA will divert their handicaps there. “We know many clubs don’t take action against their members for fear of alienating them but I believe the NHS will help curb the Buaya menace as anyone can click on the MGA website to find out someone’s true handicap. Of course, there will be some golfers who submit wrong scores from time to time but under this system, we can trace their scores in tournament and adjust their handicap accordingly. “Also, we have been in talks with organisers of tournaments to insist participants submit their handicap before they are allowed to compete to ensure fairplay.”

National duty should come first The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) will look at ways to ensure amateur players make themselves available for the national team, including asking them to sign exclusive contracts with the body. MGA vice-president Low Teck San and secretary Zulkifli Ismail, both agreed the time is right for the association to look after their “investment”. The duo said that they do not want to stop any of their juniors from turning professional, but felt the players must first serve the country in major tournaments such as the SEA Games. “We have spent a lot of time and money on the juniors only for many of them to turn professional quite early in their career. This has deprived us of

the opportunity to do well in regional events such as the SEA Games which is only opened to amateur golfers,” lamented Teck San, who saw the boys’ team return empty handed from the Laos SEA Games in December. The girls’ team won two bronze medals. “I must stress that we have no right to force anyone to represent the country, but I feel too many of our golfers are turning professional before they are ready. Most have not even won any tournaments while no Malaysian has ever won the national amateur title. “Look at Tiger Woods. He progressed from winning several amateur Opens to the US Junior Amateur then the US Amateur Championships title before finally turning

professional. He gradually worked himself up the ladder before leaving behind his amateur status.” Zulkifli agreed with Teck San and added they have discussed ways and means to keep good players in their stable for as long as possible. “As our vice-president has said, the juniors benefit greatly from MGA so maybe it is time to ask them to sign contracts which binds them to play in at least one SEA Games before they turn professional,” said Zulkifli. “We have not made any decision as we want to be fair to all parties. But frankly, I feel the players must first earn the right to turn professional, otherwise they might have a hard time making ends meet.”

I must stress that we have no right to force Low Teck San anyone to represent the country, but I feel Zulkifli Ismail too many of our golfers are turning professional before they are ready. – Low Teck San

Noh stopping Seun-yul at KLGCC

K

orean teen sensation Noh Seung-yul secured a dramatic one-stroke victory over illustrious countryman K.J. Choi at the Maybank Malaysian Open after pulling off an audacious final-hole birdie. The 18-year-old Noh produced the unlikeliest of birdies at the par five 634-yard 18th hole to close out the US$2 million tournament in front of Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, with a final round fourunder 68 and a 14-under 274 winning aggregate. “This is more special than my first win,” said Noh, who won the 2008 Midea China Classic en route to becoming the Asian Tour’s Rookie of the Year that season. Standing on the 634-yard 18th tee with a one stroke advantage over Choi, Soren Hansen, Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Rhys Davies, Noh hooked his drive wildly onto the 10th fairway. With Choi and Hansen playing in front of him, and Aphibarnrat and Davies playing alongside him, Noh was under huge pressure as he fired his drive miles left off the tee. His three wood second shot also stayed well left, flying over the Maybank hospitality unit to the left of the 18th green and eventually coming to rest on the concrete cart path, some 30 yards from the green. As spectators flocked around his ball, Choi, a seven-time winner on the PGA Tour, tied Noh on 13-under with a five foot birdie putt and pile the pressure on Noh. After being granted relief from the cart path, the young Korean stayed cool under pressure and hit a sublime chip shot over the left-hand bunker to within 18 inches of the hole to send the crowd into rapturous applause before tapping in for his second Asian Tour and maiden European Tour success. “It was fun competing with the top players in the world and defeating someone I look up to. When K.J. birdied the last hole and became the co-leader, I thought that if I parred (18) I would get into the play-off. And if I lost in the play-off, it wouldn’t disappoint me too much because I was competing against K.J. And if he won, then I would also be happy because he is from the same country. “It was so hot and I wasn’t in

It was fun competing with the top players in the world and defeating someone I look up to... the right mind to think. I just kept it simple and I wanted to get it on the green on 18 and make par. The fact that K.J. made birdie and I was able to come out with a win is very special to me.” The experienced Choi, winner of the Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia last October, tipped his cap to his young compatriot, saying Noh was truly a star in the making. “I’m not disappointed at all,” said Choi, who

PM challenges athletes to aim high

D

atuk Seri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak has challenged the national athletes to think big or risk being left behind on the world

stage. The Primer Minister, who gave away the prizes at the Maybank Malaysian Open, was left disappointed no Malaysian golfer was in with a chance for the title, extending a drought which has gone on since the first Malaysian Open. Speaking to reporters after witnessing 18-year-old Noh Seung-yul clinch victory in the most dramatic of fashion – with a birdie on the 18th green – Dato’ Sri Najib, who is an avid golfer himself, voiced his appreciation for the South Korean talent. “This year’s Open is the most exciting I have seen for a long time. We have a very

young and worthy winner. He told me he is 18-years-old and turns 19 on May 20. It is good for golf to have a young winner,” said Datuk Seri Najib. “We can take heart that age is not a barrier to becoming a champion. The same goes for all Malaysians who aspire to become champions in the future.” M. Sasidaran and Danny Chia were the only two Malaysians – out of 13 who started on Thursday – to make the cut but finished well down the leaderboard with a four-day total of three-over 291, 17 strokes behind Seung-yul. Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Najib brought welcome news to the golf industry when he announced tax exemption for all golf machineries. He also announced a RM1 million allocation to the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA). “We are happy as the price for a buggy will now go down to about RM23,000 from RM34,000. Other golf machines like lawnmowers and green trimmers will be cheaper. MGA have also been given approval to issue certificates for the import of these machines,” said MGA president Datuk Robin Loh. “The money we save will be channelled into development as we want to be independent and not rely on handouts.”

THIRST QUENCHER: Members of the media also rushed for 100PLUS

100PLUS saves the day The scorching heat and humidity at the Maybank Malaysian Open took its toll on the professional golfers at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC). Lucky for the field, Malaysia’s leading isotonic drink – 100PLUS – was available at in and around the KLGGC course. 100PLUS is specially formulated to replenish body fluids, energy, and electrolytes lost during the course of an active lifestyle. 100PLUS has been developed from a proven isotonic formula with an optimal combination of thirst-busting and energy-replacing ingredients. 100PLUS is the only sports drinks in Malaysia to be recommended by the National Sports Council (NSC).

Jean eyes entry to US Women’s Open Dodt savours the winning feeling Australia’s Andrew Dodt savoured the winning feeling for the first time by lifting the inaugural Avantha Masters trophy after carding a final round four-under 68. Dodt’s winning total of 14-under 274 was enough for him to win his maiden Asian Tour title by a single shot ahead of England’s Richard Finch who closed with a 66 to take second place on 275. Japan’s Tetsuji Hiratsuka posted a 71 to take a share of fourth place alongside Scotland’s David Drysdale and England’s Barry Lane and Richard Bland on matching 276s at the DLF Golf and Country Club. “To win a professional golf tournament is absolutely huge. I’ve come close a few times and to actually pull it off is a dream come true,” said Dodt. Starting the day tied for eighth, Dodt birdied holes two, six and eight to reach the halfway turn in 33. He bogeyed the 11th hole but went back to take a share of the lead after firing another birdie on the par-three 16th. However, it was the all-important birdie on the 18th that gave Dodt the outright lead which he held on until the end. “It was a huge relief when I birdied the 18th. I had a pretty good lie in the rough and I was deciding between which clubs to use. I decided to be more aggressive and hit a pretty good shot but it just didn’t turn,” said Dodt of his second shot which fell into the bunker. ust over a year ago, Jean Chua returned to the Malaysian shores after completing her studies in Mass Communication in the United States. With high hopes of making it to the top bracket in the women’s world of golf, Jean competed in the Malaysian Amateur Open and did very well by finishing runner-up. Sensing her potential and natural talent, she moved her base to Bangkok to get guidance from swing coach Shane Wilding. That was the beginning of the road to see her wish come true. Two weeks after landing in Bangkok, Jane turned professional on the very first round of the Thailand LPGA Open last August and surprised the field by winning the title to pocket her first pay cheque of US$4,000. Since then, Jane has been using the money to extend her stay and pay bills in Bangkok. “I managed to earn more money after my big win by making cuts in a few more events in Thailand. I needed the money to participate in foreign tournaments to gain competitive exposure,” said 22-year-old from Kuala Lumpur. Beginning this year, Jean headed Down Under to compete in two tournaments – Royal Canberra and New South Wales Opens – and was proud to make the cut. “In fact, in the final round of the Canberra Open, I had the honour of playing in the same group with England’s Laura

Davies. I learned a lot from her in terms of course management and it has certainly helped me be a better player now,” Jean said. More importantly, Jean wants to be on the starting list of the US Women’s Open in June. But first she has to go through sectional qualifiers.

Another rookie strikes it rich in Bangkok Last year Malaysia’s Jean Chua claimed her maiden title on her professional debut when she won the Thailand LPGA Open in Bangkok. Lighting struck twice in the Thai capital as South Korea’s Lee Jun-min won the US$135,000 Thailand Ladies Open on her professional debut last month Having turned professional in January, Jung-min was an “outsider” when she arrived in Bangkok to play her first professional tournament, and after 54 holes she was crowned the 2010 champion after holing out for a par on the 18th green to beat Taiwan’s Hsien Yu-ling by two strokes. Jung-min pocketed US$20,250. The 19-year-old from Seoul, who went into the final round with a one-stroke lead, signed out with a one-under 71 for the three-round total of 211. Hsien finished the tournament two strokes adrift, while three players – Russamee Gulyanamitta, Pornanong Phatlun of Thailand and Korean Lee Chang-hee – finished with identical 214

totals to sit joint third. Jung-min was stunned when a group of other Korean players “baptised” her by pouring bottles of water over her just as she was pumping her fist in celebration. Her mother kissed her after she had received a great hug from “uncle caddy”. “My mum said ‘you did well daughter, I’m proud of you’. This is an unbelievable start to my professional career and I hope I’ll be able to do well on the Korean LPGA this season. Why not? I’m all fired up now,” said Jungmin who posted three birdies but dropped one each on the second and 15th holes.

The 24-year-old’s 72-hole tally of 10-under 278 was two shots better than Cristie Kerr, who finished alone in second at 8-under 280. With the victory, Miyazato becomes the first player since LPGA Founder Marilynn Smith in 1966, a span of 44 years, to win consecutive seasonopening events. “I feel honoured to be among those great winners,” Miyazato said of past HSBC winners Lorena Ochoa and Jiyai Shin. “This is obviously a great start for me, but the LPGA is

such a tough Tour, and it’s also very tough to keep winning.” Nine players were tied for the lead early in the day following bogies at one and two by co-leaders Miyazato and Juli Inkster. In the end, Miyazato’s greatest challenge came from 12-time winner Cristie Kerr, who was 6-under on the day through 16 holes with a share of the lead. Errant drives at 17 and 18 led to bogies for Kerr, who dropped back into second, allowing Miyazato to follow two groups behind with easy pars at 17 and 18 to claim her third LPGA title in the past six months. Miyazato came from six shots back to win last month’s Honda PTT LPGA Thailand with a final-round 63.

The new belt, destined to dynamic and ever – moving people, had to speed up the water” nor constitute the source of allergies, and finally it had to be respectful of the realisation materials are water – proof, antibacterial, anallergic and recyclable.

Spikeless Series

Innovation & Technology The source of this revolution rests on the idea of associating innovative materials – rubber and plastic – to an existing object, maintaining its original function. Tie Ups belts are made with elastomeric thermoplastic, with a buckle made of polycarbonate. Technological materials for a high quality product.

100% Italian Design

BUT EXCEEDING THEM technical area and the unique design by Baldovino Mattiazzo.”

Evolution, also in the spikeless product segment

Imagination and know how were the driving factors in developing our spikeless Airplay serie s even further. We have taken the highly successful Airplay I outsole to the next technical level, have heightened the heel slightly, and are now able to present Airplay III. As light as a feather and still providing a safe stance and superior comfort – the cross-over shoe of the future.

The Duca del Cosma world is ruled by very simple laws: they pay meticulous attention to detail and are fully committed to providing outstanding quality. During the past few months the team has developed a completely new advanced three component sole. At the same time, they have added new models to their spike shoe collection. And to top it all off, the advanced technology of the shoes combine perfectly with Italian joy of living. They have already received several awards for the unique design and excellent quality, the most recent being the “Plus X Award”** for High Quality.

Tie-ups belts are a cutting edge fashion object wholly conceived and realised in Italy. All the parts that form tie-ups, including the packaging, are perfect in the moulding and finished off with care, in order to create an exclusive and luxurious fashion accessory.

Safe & Resistant Materials

The construction materials used for tie – ups are, first of all, safe : the product is antibacterial and hypo - allergenic. It is resistant to torsion and traction, and is completely water - proof, all guarantees of a long lasting product. Finally, the materials are totally anti metal-detector, tspeed up the controls at the security check points of airport terminals.

An Ecological Product

Tie-ups are ecological, since they are not produced using materials of animal origin, such as leather. They are totally recyclable, does not produce pollution and does not leave residues in he environment.

BY RIZAL ABDULLAH

World No 1 Datuk Lee Chong Wei lifted his sixth Proton Malaysia Open with a smashing 21-13, 21-7 win over Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana in the final recently to put him two wins behind Wong Peng Soon, who won eight titles in the 1940s and 1950s. “As long as I am playing, I will compete in the Malaysia Open. I want to surpass Peng Soon’s record. That is my personal aim in the Malaysia Open,” said Chong Wei, who also announced that he will “pick and choose” his tournaments this year. The Penangite will remember his win for many reasons. For the first time, his parents watched him put up a smashing display to retain his title in only 34 minutes which made him US$15,000 richer. In last year’s final he beat Park Jung Swan of South Korea. It was also his first back-to-back win in an Open tournament after the winning the Korean Open – the 2010 season’s opening Super Series tournament – a week earlier. In the process, Chong Wei made badminton history as the first Malaysian to win the Korean Open. The Malaysian ace has set his sights on winning the badminton “Majors” this year. Apart from the All-England in March, Chong Wei wants help Malaysia regain the Thomas Cup which will be held at the Putra Stadium, the

World Championships in Paris, the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and the Asian Games in Guangzhou. Meanwhile, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong gave the home fans plenty to cheer when the pair nailed the men’s doubles title with a hard fought 21-15, 17-21, 21-16 win over China’s Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen. While the biggest turnout at Putra Stadium celebrated the two titles, it was China were the biggest winners by grabbing three crowns. China won the women’s singles through Wang Xin, who beat South Korean Bae Youn Joo 19-21, 21-17, 14-6 (rtd), the women’s doubles through Du Jing-Yu Yang who beat compatriots Ma Jin-Wang Xiaoli 2116, 21-12 and the mixed doubles when Tao Jiaming-Yang Yawen beat the Danish pair of Thomas LaybournKamilla Rytter 19-21, 21-18, 21-15.

WHAT A FEELING: Alisa Kleybanova savours winning her first ever WTA singles title

BRIGHT FUTURE: Alisa Kleybanova has the potential to break into the world’s top 10

E

lena Dementieva and Li Na may be highly paid tennis stars, but they still need to learn some courtesy, especially when dealing with the media. The two highly paid players disrespected the Malaysian and world media when they refused to attend press conferences following their losses in the WTA Malaysian Open last month. The duo, who were paid appearances fees to appear in the US$220,000 tournament, was all grace and charm prior to their defeats, but their decision not to face the media left a bitter taste in the mouth. Li Na, who broke into the world’s top 10 after her semi-final appearance at the Australian Open in January, was knocked out in the first round by unheralded German Tatjana Malek, losing 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Top seed and world No. 7 Dementieva reached the final where she was thrashed 6-2, 6-3 by her Russian compatriot Alisa Kleybanova. Perhaps Dementieva and Li Na were ashamed by of the manner of their defeats but that is no reason not to snub the press. In future, the organisers and the WTA must ensure the players turn up to meet the media or maybe no one cares, since it is only ‘Malaysia’? Meanwhile, Kleybanova claimed her first ever singles title with a magnificent show of power and composure, despite playing in her first ever WTA final. Once described as the new Monica Seles due to her aggressive play, Kleybanova certainly has the power to make her mark on the circuit after beating five top 10

t was a case of so close yet so far for MalaysiaQIMeritusMahara.com in the third round of the 2009-2010 GP2 Asia Series when Luca Filippi once again finished second in the main race. It was the second time this season the Italian finished runners-up – he was also second in the season opening race in Abu Dhabi in Noverber – but the result was enough to give the only truly Asian team on the grid eight valuable points and their highest ever total in three seasons of GP2 Asia. The Malaysian team earned 18th points in their first season which saw them finish ninth overall and nine points last season which placed them 10th. This year, with one more round and two races to go, MalaysiaQIMeritusMahara.com have 19 points and sit fourth in the Constructors’ Championship with the potential of finishing as high as second. Team iSport have an unassailable lead after a dominant season which has seen them amass 62 points, but the gap between Arden (28 points), DPR (26) and Meritus (19) means second place will only be decided when the GP2 Asia Series returns as a support race for the Bahrain F1 race in the middle of March. Filippi is also fourth in the Drivers’ Championships with 16 points, only three behind second-placed Giacomo Ricci of DPR. Oliver Turvey of iSport is third on 17 while his team mate Davide Valsecchi has 45 points. In the previous two seasons, no MalaysiaQI-MeritusMahara.com driver has ever finished inside the top five and Filippi is fired up to create history for the team. “It will be great if I can help the team to its best ever finish in the team standings and also finish inside the top three,” said the 24-year-old Italian. “We have a great car and

Lotus fighting to be ready for Bahrain

I CAN’T HEAR THE CRITICS: Kovalainen has mix feelings about the new Lotus car

Malaysia’s Lotus Racing are fighting to be ready for the start of the Formula1 season in the middle of March. Hard on the heels of their less than impressive performances at the pre-season tests in Barcelona – the Lotus Cosworth T127 car was nearly five seconds slower than the rest – was a damning verdict from Heikki Kovalainen who reckons the car is worse than the Minardi he drove six years ago. Auto123.com reported that the Finn told the Turun Sanomat newspaper immediately after testing: “It’s difficult because the tyres are so different. But the Lotus is probably missing more aerodynamically than the Minardi cars (were) when you compare them with the top (cars). I have never gone into a season with less testing.” Perhaps wary of the negative impact of his statement, the 28-year-old then told GPupdate: “I think we’re better than I was expecting, to be honest. I had my doubts

that we’d make it to testing – when I joined the team I thought we weren’t going to have enough time – but [the team] have been able to build and design the car, get it to the track and get it running quicker than I thought and that’s good.” Chief technical officer Mike Gascoyne is confident of the car will be able to shine once the season start. He told reporters: “In general, we had very good reliability (during the tests) and the team are in very good shape going to the first race. Considering the length of time we had to work on the project, it’s a fantastic effort from the whole team. “Everyone has worked exceptionally hard over the two tests and we now have to work on the pace of the car and improve that, but it’s been a tremendous effort from the whole team and I’m very proud of them.” The whole of Malaysia will certainly be cheering them on in Bahrain.
