"Growth that would once have produced a cityscape dominated by form instead produced one dominated by an unfamiliar and unexpected variant of urban space. In the megalopolis, urban space translated, not into collective space, but into a world of neglect, very nearly dropped from the consciousness of its inhabitants. This space was perceived then, as it is today, as being without qualities-unstructured and inert. As a result, space was not regarded according to the freedoms it afforded, but merely as the benign host of fractured forms-chaotic, uncontrolled, and ultimately sub-urban. These fractured forms produced an enormous residuum of space that we still loathe to call urban" From Form to Space Albert Pope
