SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, EVERY DAY Ten years after moving to Arizona from upstate New York, people still ask me what I like the most about living in the Grand Canyon state. My answer is always the same: “I haven’t had to shovel snow once since I moved here.” But if I lived a couple hours north, the yearly snowfall would give my home turf in upstate New York a run for its money. That is what makes Arizona great: Where else can you get a sunburn in Scottsdale and ski in Flagstaff on the same day? Arizona offers something for everyone, every day. From hiking and biking to shopping and spas, Arizona provides the opportunity for experiences that create memories that last a lifetime. That’s what Experience Arizona is all about. We want to guide you on the greatest adventures and experiences to make your visit to Arizona one that you will never forget. Based off feedback from readers and our staff’s personal experiences, we selected the five best dining experiences, tours, attractions, and places to visit in a variety of categories. Have you found a hidden Arizona gem that you’d like to tell others about? Do you disagree with some of our choices? Let your voice be heard by voting on the hotels, restaurants, tours and everything else that will be featured in the next issue of Experience Arizona. You can vote by visiting ExperienceAZonline.com. So get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. And use Experience Arizona to guide you to a visit or vacation that will make you want to come back time after time to keep crossing the must-see hot spots off your Top 5 lists.

Between the mega malls, unique boutiques, antique troves and specialty shops with one-of-a-kind buys, Glendale’s shopping destinations have a way of turning a day out on the town into a full-blown mission. Historic Downtown Glendale has been named one of the country’s 10 best places for shopping. In fact, Historic Downtown Glendale is actually two neighborhoods: Historic Catlin Court, with its white picket fences and mature shade trees, welcome visitors to the bungalows-turned-specialty shops; and Old Towne, boasting brick-trimmed sidewalks and glowing gaslights, which lead the way to the city's famous specialty stores and features the Glendale Visitor Center, a parking structure with free covered parking. The neighborhoods span 10 square blocks, which can easily be strolled in an afternoon. Shoppers can also delight at the beautifully designed Arrowhead Towne Center. Conveniently located just off the Loop 101 freeway, the mall features water fountains, a movie theater and more than 170 shops and restaurants. The Arrowhead Entertainment District and Glendale’s Northern Shopping Corridor offers boutique clothing shops, wine shops, nightclubs and an enviable collection of rave restaurants. The Westgate City Center Sports and Entertainment district, located at Glendale Avenue and Loop 101, redefines Glendale dining and nightlife. Often labeled the "Times Square of the Desert," visitors will enjoy an array of shops and restaurants. The outdoor enthusiast won’t want to miss Cabela's — the world’s foremost outfitter, located in the Zanjero District just north of the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

KINGMAN The City of Kingman and Kingman Powerhouse Visitor Center

Kingman Located at the Heart of Historic Route 66 and just 70 miles from the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, Kingman’s convenient location and affordable lodging — coupled with the historic downtown’s charming hospitality — makes this community a perfect launching point for family adventures. Kingman is home to nearly 1,000 miles of off-road, ATV, equestrian, biking and hiking trails that wind through the surrounding hills with elevations ranging from 3,000 to over 7,000 feet, offering nature enthusiasts a year-round scenic backdrop against which to set their outdoor explorations.

FAVORITE ROUTE 66 SIDE STOPS IN AND AROUND KINGMAN

The Kingman Powerhouse — a historic building that once supplied electrical power for the construction of Hoover Dam, area mines and the burgeoning town of Kingman — houses the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum, chronologically illustrating the life-cycle of the Mother Road through life-sized dioramas. The Mohave Museum of History & Arts is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Native American tribes, missionaries, miners, soldiers, railroaders, and ranchers who helped to settle what became Northwest Arizona. One can get a true feel for early western life touring the Bonelli House with unique Anglo-Territorial architecture, displays of family originals and period pieces. The home holds Kingman’s first clock and the safe used by cow-folk before any bank was established in town. A unique display of American war times is the Kingman Army Airfield Museum, which chronicles the unique history of the site where 36,000 gunnery students trained in WWII. Located in an original WWII hanger at the Kingman Airfield, volunteer vets man the front desk and give tours with real stories and firsthand accounts of the exhibits. Another real diamond just off scenic Route 66 at the Kingman Airport is Desert Diamond Distillery. This family owned and operated working distillery is one of the few in the U.S. that is open to the public with tours, a retail outlet and a tasting bar. The bar was rescued from a famous French restaurant on the old Las Vegas strip and known to be a favorite place of the Rat Pack.

SOME OTHER FANTASTIC DAY TRIPS: GRAND CANYON SKYWALK Drive Time: 1 hour, 45 minutes Views offering unspoiled natural beauty. Get personal with the canyon and stand at Guano Point or take a stroll 4,000 feet over the canyon floor on the Skywalk.

Powerhouse Visitor's Center

HUALAPAI MOUNTAIN PARK Drive Time: 20 minutes Picnic, backpack, mountain bike, pitch a tent or stay in an historic rustic cabin. With elevations ranging from 5,000 feet to 8,400 feet, Hualapai Mountain Park offers hundreds of miles of trail systems and abundant wildlife views. True adventurists can rent a horse from Hualapai Mountain Stables for a guided ride through the cool pines. KEEPERS OF THE WILD Drive Time: 40 minutes This exotic wildlife sanctuary has nearly 200 animals in a natural environment. Pace yourself or take a guided safari tour of lions, cougars, tigers, wolves, primates, birds and more.

Vote and learn more at ExperienceAZonline.com

OATMAN Drive Time: 45 minutes Twenty-eight miles west of Kingman and passed the winding switchbacks of Sitgreaves Pass is Oatman, an authentic turn-of-the-century mining camp forgotten when this stretch of Route 66 was bypassed. Today, “wild” burros, descendants of pack animals brought into the area by miners, wander the streets, and “gunfighters” greet visitors. STETSON WINERY & CELLE WINES Drive Time: 25 minutes Try a wine tasting at one of Arizona’s two immerging vineyards, Stetson Winery and Celle Wines. The small vineyards are in Hualapai Valley just off of Route 66 with tasting rooms expected to open spring 2012.

DINING IN DOWNTOWN KINGMAN & ROUTE 66 Historic Route 66 has become something of a mecca for those looking to recall their youthful doo-wop days, as well as for nostalgic first-time travelers and international tourists yearning to experience a uniqueness hard to find in today’s one-size-fits-all, big-box society. We invite you to visit some of the special eateries in and around Kingman, the Heart of Historic Route 66. If you’re hankerin’ for a burger, blue plate special or a world famous “Route” beer float, Mr. D’z Diner, once a filling station, is a Route 66 favorite. On Saturday mornings, you’ll find local gear-heads congregating here with their cars for a classic car enthusiast’s breakfast. After your meal, take a stroll through the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum or climb aboard a 1928 steam engine stationed at Locomotive Park — both just across the street. A block away from the Mother Road on Beale Street is Redneck’s Southern Pit BBQ, which serves up a slow smoked pulled pork “sammach” and fills the whole downtown with an aromatic hickory smell. Inside, the decor is just as fun as the food. A few doors down the street is the Cellar Door, a relaxing wine bar that also pours specialty beers and hosts live entertainment every Friday and Saturday evening. A Kingman landmark, the Dambar & Steakhouse is a throw-back to the area’s Wild West and ranching roots. Local legend has it that when the original stone structure, once a saloon, was for sale, the prospective buyer’s wife argued against buying that “damn bar” and the name stuck. Historic Downtown Kingman has more than 60 buildings on the national register of historic places. Some other unique eats in Downtown Kingman include:

• Bangkok Thai Cuisine • Calico’s Restaurant • Dora’s Beale Street Deli • El Palacio Mexican Restaurant • Mattinas Italian Ristorante • Sirens’ Café

SMALL-TOWN VALUES MIX WITH RICH HERITAGE The Town of Queen Creek boasts a rich heritage based on small-town values and country friendliness. This growing community is proud of the many exceptional features that define the Town’s character. Queen Creek is located in the Phoenix metropolitan area and within minutes of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (PMGA), Arizona State University at the Polytechnic Campus and Chandler Gilbert Community College at the Williams Campus. Allegiant and Spirit Airlines offer service to multiple national destinations out of PMGA – visit phxmesagateway.org for a full list of destinations. Among the elements that create a unique experience for residents and visitors is a multi-use trails system that is designed to accommodate equestrian, pedestrian and bicycling uses and provide an alternate means of transportation throughout the Town. Planned to ultimately connect Queen Creek to San Tan Mountain Regional Park, these trails help preserve a rural atmosphere while providing recreational outlets and enhance the sustainability of the community. Visit maricopa.gov/parks/santan Queen Creek’s Horseshoe Park & Equestrian Centre (HPEC) provides a venue for a variety of equestrian and multi-purpose events. From national and regional equestrian competitions, rodeos and roping to family gymkhanas, HPEC provides is a state of the art facility with four lighted arenas (one covered), 300 barn stalls and vendor areas and multi-use space. The Town’s second annual Roots N’ Boots PRCA ProRodeo will be held March 30, 31 and April 1 in 2012. world, and with daily tours, visitors can learn how the mill produces fine extra virgin olive oil in the Tuscan style. Delicious breakfast and lunches are available to the public. Visit queencreekolivemill.com The community has seen vibrant development including more than one million square feet of retail in the Town Center. The Town Center offers both nationally recognized tenants and independently owned businesses and restaurants unique to Queen Creek. In the Town Center you will also find the Town’s municipal center, a state-of-the-art Gold LEED-certified library and the future Communiversity @ Queen Creek, a higher education center organized by Rio Salado College in partnership with the Town of Queen Creek, Maricopa County Community College District and other higher education institutions. This facility is scheduled to be complete by fall 2013. Queen Creek offers residents, businesses and visitors an exceptional experience that combines the community’s rich rural heritage and natural beauty with a wide variety of recreational and family activities, all within a short distance from one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States.

WELCOME TO QUEEN CREEK! Incorporated in 1989, Queen Creek is a growing community in Arizona’s East Valley, boasting a population today of nearly 25,000. Along with an explosion in residential housing and population growth during the turn of the 21st century, everything from major transportation projects (e.g. Ellsworth Loop Road) to infrastructure improvements (e.g. sewer, gas), to elite properties (e.g. Encanterra Country Club) have boomed. Importantly the character and direction of Queen Creek remain balanced: a friendly, courteous community focused on common decency and an appreciation for business. The Town of Queen Creek truly is a wonderful community in which to work, play and reside. We hope you’ll join us and experience Queen Creek for yourself soon! Respectfully, Chris Clark Chairman of the Board Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce
