kingman Located at the Heart of Historic Route 66 and just 70 miles from the Skywalk at Grand Canyon West. Kingman’s convenient location and affordable lodging — coupled with the historic downtown’s charming hospitality — makes this community a perfect launching point for family adventures down Route 66 and to the Grand Canyon. Kingman is home to nearly 1,000 miles of off-road, ATV, equestrian, biking and hiking trails that wind through the surrounding hills with elevations ranging from 3,000 to over 7,000 feet, offering nature enthusiasts a year-round scenic backdrop against which to set their outdoor explorations.

Historic Downtown Kingman has more than 40 sights and buildings on the National Registry of Historic Places. While visiting the Museum, be sure to pick up a walking tour guide and get a behind the scenes look at the history of Northwestern Arizona. The Kingman Powerhouse — a historic building that once supplied electrical power for area mines and the burgeoning town of Kingman — houses the Powerhouse Route 66 Museum, chronologically illustrating the lifecycle of the Mother Road through life-sized dioramas. The Mohave Museum of History & Arts is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Native American tribes, missionaries, miners, soldiers, railroaders and ranchers who helped to settle what became Northwest Arizona. One can get a true feel for early western life touring the Bonelli House with unique Anglo-Territorial architecture, displays of family originals and period pieces. The home holds Kingman’s first clock and the safe used by cow-folk before any bank was established in town. Newly opened in 2012 is the Kingman Railroad Museum in the historic Train Depot. The Depot, which dates back to 1907, has been beautifully restored and is a great location from which to watch either model trains in the museum or the real thing up-close outside! A unique display of American war times is the Kingman Army Airfield Museum, which chronicles the unique history of the site where 36,000 gunnery students trained in WWII. Located in an original WWII hanger at the Kingman Airfield, volunteer vets give tours with real stories and first-hand accounts of the exhibits.

Hualapai Mountain park Drive Time: 20 minutes Picnic, backpack, mountain bike, pitch a tent or stay in a historic, rustic cabin. With elevations ranging from 5,000 feet to 8,400 feet, Hualapai Mountain Park offers hundreds of miles of trail systems and abundant wildlife views. drive route 66 weSt to oatMan Drive Time: 45 minutes West of Kingman, beyond the winding switchbacks of Sitgreaves Pass is Oatman, an authentic turn-of-the-century mining camp forgotten when this stretch of Route 66 was bypassed. Today, “wild” burros — descendants of pack animals brought into the area by miners — wander the streets, and “gunfighters” greet visitors.

drive route 66 eaSt to SeliGMan Drive Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes Your first stop is Desert Diamond Distillery (8 miles), just off scenic Route 66 at the Kingman Airport. This family owned and operated, working distillery is one of the few in the U.S. that is open to the public. Next stop, Keepers of the Wild (34 miles) is an exotic wildlife sanctuary with nearly 200 animals in natural habitats. Walk yourself or take a guided safari tour of lions, cougars, tigers, wolves, primates, birds and more. Stop at an original Route 66 attraction, Grand Canyon Caverns (62 miles) and descend by elevator 21 stories into the earth for a guided tour along 45 minutes of paved, lit trails through three-million-year-old, undersea fossils. Route 66 will take you all the way to Seligman (85 miles), which was bypassed by Interstate 40 in 1978 as the primary means of travel. This nearly killed the town and inspired the enthusiasm of Seligman’s townsfolk, who worked hard to preserve the route and kicked off America’s love affair with Historic Route 66.

In today’s one-size-fits-all, big-box society, it can be tough finding a unique, quality dining experience. Here is a sampling of some of the special eateries in and around Kingman, the Heart of Historic Route 66. Mr. D’z Diner, once a filling station, is a Route 66 favorite with a world-famous, homemade “Route” beer float. On Saturday mornings, you’ll find local gear-heads congregating for a classic car enthusiast’s breakfast. Redneck’s Southern Pit BBQ fills Historic Downtown with a hint of aromatic hickory. Stop in for ice cream and a slow-smoked brisket or pulled pork “sammich.” The Cellar Door Wine Bar entertains every Thursday through Saturday. This little wine bar is a nice street-side escape to relax, enjoy a glass of wine or beer and listen to music, or just escape from the world. The Dambar & Steakhouse is a throwback to the area’s Wild West and ranching roots. Originally built in the 1930s, it was a gas station in the ‘50s and a bar in the ‘60s. Legend has it that a prospective buyer’s wife argued against buying that “damn bar.” The name stuck!
