or one month, the stars align in Metro Phoenix — 15 professional baseball teams call the Phoenix Metro home. It’s a glorious time for locals and out-of-towners alike, who make it difficult to visit anywhere near Phoenix without catching a whiff of onion-covered hot dogs, the sounds of hundreds of peanuts being shelled and the urge to spend a string of sunny March days at the ballpark with thousands of cheering fans. Spring Training is a 67-year tradition in Arizona, since the Giants and Indians became the first two teams in the franchise in 1947. Those that have joined since run the gamut of talent. There are World Series champions as well as teams that have never contended for the Commissioner’s Trophy (see which on page 20). With 15 MLB teams playing at 10 parks all within a short drive of one another, the Cactus League offers the largest concentrated area of professional baseball facilities in the U.S. Unofficial fact: It’s also the leading cause of locals sneaking away for extended lunch breaks. Whether you’re a Phoenician or from Cincinnati, “Play Ball!” is a guide to making the most of spring training — from the entire league schedule on page 8 to guides on where to eat, play and stay near your stadium of choice. For the first time in three years, the Cactus League welcomes a new stadium. The Wrigleyville-inspired Cubs Park in Mesa will host its first Spring Training game on Feb. 27. The little piece of Chicago and its surrounding infrastructure is expected to have an economic impact of $137 million — that’s about 20 percent of the Cactus League’s last reported impact. Hohokam Stadium, the former home field of the Cubs, will undergo renovations through 2014 to open next season for the Oakland A’s. So, unpack your lucky jersey, grab your cap, slather on some sun screen and root, root, root for one of the 15 home teams!

Thank heaven for 1947 The groudbreaking year that gave baseball fans more than just the Cactus League
C
actus League baseball was born in 1947 when two teams — the Cleveland Indians and the New York Giants — traveled to Arizona to prepare for the long season ahead. Teams soon realized that the Grand Canyon state boasts the perfect climate and conditions for baseball. Today, 15 teams train in the Phoenix metropolitan area in the greatest concentration of professional baseball facilities found anywhere in the United States. Beyond being the beginning of the Cactus League, 1947 goes down as one of the most significant years in baseball history. Here are some of the highlights from that groundbreaking year:
April 15: Major League Baseball’s color line is officially broken when Jackie Robinson makes his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers against the Boston Braves at Ebbets Field. April 27: It is Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium. Despite having throat cancer, Ruth speaks to the packed house, proclaiming, “The only real game, I think, in the world is baseball.” July 5: Larry Doby makes his debut for the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first black baseball player in the American League, and fully integrating Major League Baseball.
July 19: Hall of Fame Negro League player Willard Brown makes his major league debut with the St. Louis Browns. Brown would only appear in 21 games for St. Louis in his only major league season, batting .179 with one home run and six runs batted in. July 20: With both Hank Thompson and Willard Brown in the starting line-up, the St. Louis Browns become the first major league club to field two black players at the same time. Both players play all nine innings of both games of a doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox. August 26: Brooklyn Dodgers’ Dan Bankhead became the first black pitcher in the majors. He homered in his first major league plate appearance, but didn’t fare well on the mound. In 3⅓ innings of relief, he gave up 10 hits and six earned runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates, who won the game, 16–3. October 6: The New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5-2, in Game 7 of the World Series to win their 11th world championship, four games to three. This was the first World Series involving a nonwhite player, as Dodgers 1B Jackie Robinson had racially integrated Major League Baseball at the beginning of the season. It was also the first Series to be shown on television although coverage was limited to New York City and surrounding environs. November 27: Triple Crown winner Ted Williams (.343 BA, 32 home runs, 114 RBI) is edged out by Joe DiMaggio (.315, 20, 97) for the American League MVP Award by one point. One BBWAA member fails to include Williams anywhere on his ballot.

When the White Sox moved from Florida in 1998, they helped christen Tucson Electric Park with the Diamondbacks, creating the league’s second shared facility. Their arrival also created a great crosstown spring training rivalry with the Cubs in Mesa. Games between the two teams continue to be among the league’s biggest draw. DID YOU KNOW: The fuzzy, green Chicago White Sox mascot is called “Southpaw,” a nickname for lefthanded pitchers.
Babbo Italian Eatery
Los Angeles Dodgers The Dodgers have provided two of the biggest surprises in baseball — both nationally and locally. First, they left Brooklyn in 1958 and moved to the West Coast. Then almost as surprising as their move from Brooklyn to L.A. was their departure from their long-time “Dodgertown” spring training home in Vero Beach, Fla., to Camelback Ranch in Glendale in 2008. DID YOU KNOW: The L.A. Dodgers were recently bought for $2 billion.

Cubs Park After calling Hohokam Stadium in Mesa home away from home for 36 years, the Chicago Cubs will break in a new spring training facility with six home games starting on Feb. 27. The new Cubs Park in Mesa is fashioned after Wrigleyville in Chicago with amenities meant to remind fans of the homeland. The field, which cost more than $85 million, is expected to have an economic impact of $137 million for Arizona. As for Hohokam, the Oakland A’s are beginning renovations of the stadium with intent to play ball in it next year. The Cubs joined the Cactus League in 1952, when former owner Phillip K. Wrigley moved the team’s spring home from Catalina Island in California to Rendezvous Park, which is now downtown Mesa. Only the San Francisco/New York Giants have been a member of the Cactus League circuit for longer than the Cubs. DID YOU KNOW: The Chicago Cubs are still afflicted by the Curse of the Billy Goat. Rumor has it that when a fan wasn’t allowed to bring a goat into the stadium, he put a curse on the team that would never allow another World Series to be played at their home stadium, Wrigley Field. 14 | Play Ball Magazine

The Indians are the Cactus League’s prodigal son. They returned to Arizona in 2009 after a 16-year hiatus in Florida, moving to the West Valley city of Goodyear. Prior to their departure at the conclusion of the 1992 Cactus League season, the Indians spent 45 springs at historic Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. DID YOU KNOW: The 1998 season was all about brotherly love for the Reds. The Mariners are the fourth expansion team to begin play in the Cactus League before playing an official major league game. They called Tempe Diablo Stadium home before permanently moving into the Peoria Sports Complex in 1994. Sharing that facility with the San Diego Padres, the two started a trend by becoming the first pair to share a spring training facility. DID YOU KNOW: The only time two perfect games occurred at the same stadium during the same year was in 2012 at Seattle’s Safeco Field — a first in Mariners history. The Mariners are also one of two teams to never play in a World Series.

San Diego Padres One of four expansion teams to join Major League Baseball in 1969, the Padres set up spring training camp in Yuma. Oakland Athletics The Athletics are one of the Cactus League’s most nomadic teams. In 1969, one year after relocating from Kansas City (after starting out in Philadelphia), the Athletics moved their spring training operations from Bradenton, Fla., to Rendezvous Park in Mesa. The A’s left Rendezvous Park to move into a new Hohokam Park in 1977, played at Scottsdale Stadium in 1979, and in 1984 moved to their current facility, Phoenix Municipal Stadium. DID YOU KNOW: In 2002 the A’s set a MLB record with its 20-game winning streak.

The Diamondbacks enjoy the distinction of being the Cactus League’s only home team. They started spring training in the Old Pueblo in 1998, sharing Tucson Electric Park with the Chicago White Sox. They opened spring training in 2002 as World Series champs after beating the New York Yankees in a memorable 7-game series. DID YOU KNOW: According to a poll by teammarketing.com, the cheapest place, out of all the MLB teams’ fields, to buy beer and a hot dog is at the D-Backs’ Chase Field. This past season it cost $5.50.

Colorado Rockies As Major League Baseball continued to expand, it also fueled the Cactus League’s growth. The Rockies joined the National League and played at historic Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. In 2008, the Rockies opened spring training as World Series runners-up, after being swept by the Boston Red Sox. DID YOU KNOW: The idea for the Rockies mascot, a purple stegosaurus named Dinger, was spurred by a 66 million-year-old dinosaur bone found during the construction of Coors Field. 24 | Play Ball Magazine

DID YOU KNOW: The Kansas City Royals stadium features a baseballthemed mini golf course.
Texas Rangers After a five-year drought, the Cactus League expanded to 12 teams with the arrival of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals in 2003 to Surprise Stadium. The Rangers represented the A.L. in the fourth All-Cactus League World Series against the Giants in 2010. It marked their first appearance in the Fall Classic in the team’s 49-year history dating back to its origin as the 1961 Washington Senators. When the Angels joined the Cactus League prior to their inaugural season in 1961, they played their home games in Palm Springs, Calif. They were the only Cactus League member to hold spring camp outside of Arizona. This, of course, made for the longest road trip in the league for visiting teams. The Angels, now owned by Phoenix businessman Artie Moreno, opened the 2003 Cactus League season as World Series champions after beating the Giants in the 2002 Fall Classic.
